Week Four: Friends, Family, and Food
Tumblr media
The Capullana caves arch.
**Sorry for the late post, wifi access was minimal this weekend! I wrote most of this on Friday, so just pretend it’s Friday instead of Monday :) **
A month has flown by!! It was fun to see my mom this week and show her around Lobitos. The EcoSwell team made a number of new friends this week, including a couple of new volunteers. We are also now generating clean and drinkable distilled water! It’s been a busy week and there is lots to tell :)
The EcoHouse
Tumblr media
Our homemade vegan fruit crumble!! It was delicious :)
We have a couple of new people in the EcoHouse!! Jenny arrived on Tuesday afternoon, and she seems great! She is going into her final year at Humboldt State in energy resources engineering (a major I almost did too) and is from the bay area. It’s been really fun to have another girl in the house; she’s very outgoing and fun to talk to! Jenny is helping Joris and I with the solar distiller, so we’re hopefully going to make a lot of progress in the next few weeks!
Jack arrived yesterday (Thursday). He’s from London and just finished his first year at uni studying geography (with a Spanish component). I haven’t had much of a chance to talk to him yet, but he seems really friendly and eager to help out. He’s here for NGO management, so he’ll be able to help me out with social media (yay!). With Jack we have seven volunteers and we only have room in the house for six, so he’s staying at Nacho’s hostel until Isa leaves next Friday.
Other than our newbies, we’ve had a crazy good food week. During this week’s Talara trip, the guys that went bought a lot less food than normal, which I think has upped our creativity and thus upped the awesomeness of our home-cooked meals. We had Taco Tuesday (as always), but we didn’t have tortillas, so we whipped up some homemade tortillas that were pretty amazing!! Wednesday was veggie burger night again and we cooked up some amazing veggie burgers using our now tried and trusted recipe (minimalist baker’s sweet potato black bean burgers). We also made a strawberry, nectarine, and papaya crumble that hit the spot for dessert! Thursday night we went out to Tranqui’s because Jack had just arrived and Jenny hadn’t been there yet, but he was out of his yummy plantains and french fries :( Luckily, though, Isa and Jenny and I had made two AMAZING vegan carrot cakes earlier in the day (we had a bunch of carrots we needed to get rid of) and everybody chowed down on them both Thursday night and this morning. And tonight we have a vegan pot pie in the oven that looks delicious and I can’t wait to eat!!
We also watched a couple of cool movies this week, one was called Rushmore, a Wes Anderson film about a guy who wants to stay at his prep school forever, and Ex Machina, which I hadn’t seen before and was a little crazy but pretty well done, I thought.
There also was a pisco party one evening, and four of our new friends (two pairs of van-life couples staying at La Casona from Germany and Austria) joined us and learned about what we do at EcoSwell (they were very into it)!
Work
Tumblr media
Joris, Jenny, and I with our working distiller!
The distiller is officially up and running! It still needs quite a few improvements, but it can produce very pure distilled water. Right now we’re getting about three liters a day, but we think we can increase that quite a bit by making it more air-tight and making some other changes. We have spent quite a bit of time filtering seawater to get macro organisms out of the water (you don’t want stuff dying in the distiller and stinking up the water) and the distiller can take about 50 liters at a time, which it distills over about five days (right now). We’re on the way to making a really effective and sustainable source of clean drinking water for Lobitos!
Planting day was really fun this week, we had both of our new van life couples come help out, so we got a lot done pretty fast Wednesday morning! I helped germinate some oregano and cilantro and then mixed and poured dirt for the veggie garden/orchard. We also planted a bunch of vetiver (bug and odor repellant grass) on the path to the dry toilet. We took some group pictures and gave the van lifers EcoSwell shirts as thanks for their help! Then we made our classic big planting day breakfast and got working on the projects again.
On Friday, a few of us went in to Talara to look for materials for our projects (Jenny and I got some items that will improve the distiller), and I got to experience ProMart (the weirdly similar Peruvian version of Home Depot) and Plazavea, the grocery store. We went to lunch at Black Pepe, a local restaurant run out of a man’s living room, and had a delicious salad (I also tried a bite of a yummy classic seafood dish called mariscos) before heading home with our new materials.
Adventures
Tumblr media
Mom and I at the Capullana caves!
This weekend was really fun because my mom was here from Friday to Tuesday and we got to go on some adventures and I got to show her around Lobitos! She arrived early Friday morning and knocked on the door just as I was leaving for a run. If you want to hear her wild travel story check out her facebook! Anyway, she made it after an exhausting night and crashed in my bed while she waited for the hostel to open. She moved into her room at lunch time and after work I went up to La Casona (the hostel up the hill where she stayed) and had a nice happy hour with her on the deck as we watched the sun set. She had already made friends with one of the van life couples (from Germany) and was talking up a storm in classic mom fashion. After sunset we decided to walk the beach down to a restaurant she had been recommended by some surfers, El Cuartel. It had amazing veggie burgers and sweet potato fries, along with quinoa and potato salads! After dinner we headed home and decided to watch The Martian with everyone, which ended up going until midnight and Mom found out that she had been locked out of her hostel. So, she came and slept in my twin-size bottom bunk bed with me and kept me up half the night with her snoring (haha..).
On Saturday we decided to head to Mancora (a touristy party town an hour and a half north) for the day as a little mother-daughter adventure. While we were waiting for the combie to take us to Talara from Lobitos, we met the other van-life couple (from Austria) and talked to them for a while as we all looked for a combie that would fit us. (We happened to meet both van-life couples at different times than the EcoSwell directors, but they both became friends with all of us! Funny how we all ran into each other one way or another.) Anyway, Mom and I successfully made it to Talara and then into a van going to Mancora, and as soon as we got to Mancora we walked the beach and wandered the vendor stalls (super touristy) and then had a yummy lunch at the Black Sheep, which had amazing vegan burgers and juices. We spent the next few hours hanging out on the beach reading, napping, and watching horses give people rides and rented ATVs zooming down the beach. After we had enjoyed the atmosphere for a while we went and had happy hour at one of the nearby restaurants, and I tried a Bolivian drink that mom had in Ecuador and mom tried a maracuya (passionfruit) sour. We wandered our way to the bus station and hopped on the Expo bus back to Talara with a French surfer dude we met in the bus station who was also headed to Lobitos. We made it into Talara after dark and barely caught the last Lobitos combie of the night, which we packed with sixteen people, a spare tire, a few bags of groceries, and a surfboard. It was a wild ride! We cooked up some pasta back at the EcoHouse, and that was the same night of the pisco party with the van-lifers that we’d met! Mom made it back before the hostel locked up, so I got my bed to myself again :)
Sunday morning I attempted to do laundry and mostly flooded the kitchen, but after a few hours my clothes were clean and the kitchen was once again dry. Mom and I went to the rocks at La Punta and tanned, read, and watched the surfers ride the big waves. We headed to lunch at Cora, a restaurant I’d heard a lot about but hadn’t yet been to, and had a yummy veggie stir fry while mom tried the fresh fish. That evening, Henry (our local surfer friend) offered to take us all to the Capullana caves up the coast a bit. A bunch of us hopped in his and his brother’s mototaxis with Henry’s two dogs and drove the dirt road to scramble around some cliffs and caves and watch the sunset. It was really beautiful, and climbing down and up the ropes was exciting! We saw little red crabs everywhere and a bunch of blue-footed boobies (famous birds that Darwin studied) that mom hadn’t even seen in the Galapagos. The caves were an incredible adventure, and I’m really glad mom was there to experience them too! We got home after dark and headed to Tranqui’s for our classic Sunday dinner.
On Monday after work, I went up to La Casona for happy hour and sunset with mom again, and the EcoTeam joined us a bit later! Mom challenged Andres, one of the directors, to a game of digital backgammon on her phone (he won but she was in the lead for most of the game) and we all headed to 420 for dinner after, where we had some yummy pizza and pasta and piña coladas for mom’s last night :)
Mom stopped by for lunch on Tuesday before she left for the airport, and I said goodbye and wished her good luck with the rest of her travels (from what I’ve heard it sounds like they’ve been going well!) and sent her off to the Talara airport with Julio, our neighbor.
There weren’t many adventures the rest of the week, but on Thursday night at Tranqui’s we made friends with a drunk British guy who was cycling South America, and he called us EcoWarriors, so that was fun!
Tumblr media
One of the fishing boats (still in use!) on the beach.
This was a great week; it was really fun to see mom and hear her stories of her travels alone in Latin America, which I’m really impressed with (especially because she doesn’t speak any Spanish) and I’m glad I got out to see more of this area of Peru! The cooking this week was really fun, I definitely want to eat in and cook more. I can’t believe I’ve been here a month already; only five more weeks until I head south to Patagonia! Stay tuned for more fun stories and adventures (I had a bit of a wild weekend, details will be included in the next post)!

Lavender Fields, Bouillabaisse, and Calanques: The 4-Day Weekend in Marseille
Tumblr media
You already have some understanding of Provence; it’s a fancy region in France, oui? Oui, that’s right. Provence is chic, since it includes the glitzy Riviera (think Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez). It’s not as wine-drenched as Bordeaux, Burgundy, or the Loire Valley, but in place of those vineyards are purple lavender fields that roll into oblivion. They also happen to be just a short drive from Marseille, Provence’s capital and largest city (and France’s second-largest after Paris). A vacation anchored in Marseille offers all sorts of sensory rewards: There’s the smell of lavender, outdone only by the savonneries—the famed soap makers. There’s the taste of tomato-fish bouillabaisse stew, swapped for ratatouille if you’re seafood-averse (or especially hungry), chased by French wines that may or may not be Provençal. There’s the blue Mediterranean expanse to savor as the sun warms your skin, though it’s best earned by hiking through the forested Calanques National Park. After your trek, you’ll settle into a walled-in calanque cove to soak up the natural beauty and isolation. ]] Inn-to-Inn by Bike in Southern France The city itself is restless, in a good way. It has the reputation of being grittier and more grounded than Paris—which is a compliment, really. There’s rarely a quiet moment in the Vieux Port, between the ferries to Count of Monte Cristo-inspired Chateau d’If, the aperitif crowd, and the late-night local revelers. It’s teeming with top-tier restaurants that don’t know how top-tier they are. The city is grounded and world-class, without the urge to show it off. Four days is not enough, in my opinion, given how much time you could spend exploring the region. But if that’s all the time you’ve got, here are the places to spend it.
Where to Stay in Marseille
]] Hotel Dieu—InterContinental Marseille: You really can’t miss seeing Hotel Dieu, just off the Vieux Port, acting like a palatial gateway to the old town. You might even mistake it for a royal palace, though it’s actually an 18th-century hospital that was operable until the early aughts. In 2013, it reopened as the InterContinental—Hotel Dieu, and is now one of the most luxurious homestays in Marseille. There’s the Michelin-starred Alcyone onsite, serving inventive Mediterranean fare, as well as the terraced cocktail bar Capian offering aerial views of Vieux Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde. As for the rooms, well, it’s an InterContinental after all; you get stately accommodations designed in mineral tones to match the city’s rocky coast. The icing on the cake is the onsite Clarins spa, fit with a warm indoor pool, experience showers, hammams, massage and spa treatments, and an adjacent fitness studio. Le Petit Nice Passedat: The 16-room Le Petit Nice Passedat offers 5-star luxury with views of the sea—and private terraces from which to take it all in. It’s connected to the 3-Michelin-star restaurant by the same name, serving eclectic regional seafood (get the Marseille favorite bouillabaisse fish stew multiple times in town, but order the deconstructed, reimagined version of it from the fixe prix menu). Both hotel and restaurant are passionate undertakings of noted chef Gérald Passédat. While you’re a couple miles from the city center, it’s no inconvenience given the day or two you’ll spend near the coast or daytripping from the city altogether.
Tumblr media
]]
What to Do in Marseille
If you plan to hit the city’s key tourist attractions and want unlimited public transit access (in particular its bold-and-bright orange metro), then consider purchasing a Marseille Tourism Pass for intervals of 24, 48, or 72 hours (for 27, 37, or 43 euros, respectively). You can purchase it at various spots in Marseille: the Tourist Office and Convention Centre, La Capitainerie des Docks, Vieux-Port and Saint Charles metro stations, or Airport Information Office. Hike the Calanques: See “Day Trips” below. Vieux Port (Old Port): Marseille’s central bustle seems to swirl around the Vieux Port, a hotel- and restaurant-lined marina that stays boisterous at all hours of the day and night. You can nestle in for aperitif or a late-night bar crawl, stock up on soaps and market souvenirs, catch the boat to Chateau D’If, or marvel at religious relics like Saint Victor’s Abbey (5th century), or Saint-Ferréol les Augustins (15th century). ]] Going on an Outback Helicopter Pub Crawl Outside Darwin Buy soap: Since the 17th century, Marseille has been known for soap-making, and the city is still famous for its 72-percent-oil recipe. And because it’s more of a tradition than a reliable global export these days, Marseille soap makes for a terrific gift or souvenir from your travels. Save some room in your suitcase, and never mind if you have yet to appreciate this craft: You’ll have a hard time narrowing down which scents and shapes to bring home—and for next to nothing. (At the very least, you’ve got to get some lavender soap, since it’s Provence.) Stock up at these stores and makers: La Savonnerie Marseille, La Maison du Savon, Soap Factory — Le Serail, or The Marseille Soap Museum. Unité d’Habitation/Corbusier’s Radiant City: Le Corbusier’s architecture is characterized by the marriage of colorful expressionism with functional spaces, and this “Radiant City” apartment complex is one of the most famous structures. (It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and French National Monument.) This residential complex largely influenced the brutalist movement and redefined urban living for its residents, thanks to symmetrically designed apartments and thoughtfully executed public spaces. Most notable is Le Corbusier’s use of color, which you’ll see from inside and out. Book an English tour while in town for an eye-opening tour at the complex, including a preserved apartment room. (The others are now inhabited by some of Marseille’s upper class. A pre-booked Saturday 10 a.m. tour is requisite for viewing, unless you otherwise visit the onsite cafe or stay in the onsite hotel. ]] Coastal R&R: Head to the coast for aperitifs, sunbathing, long walks on the cliff, romantic dinner views, and more. Just note that sandy beaches are few and far between and rather small, hence why most residents are totally fine lying out on the rocks. If you crave sand, point yourself to Plages du Prado, Plage du Prophete, Plage Borely, Plage de L’Estaque. If you want to relax under the sun on a reserved beach lounger, drink in hand, with a ladder into the big drink, then call one or two days ahead to Le Bistrot Plage, a restaurant and public beach club that will have you feeling like you’re at the Riviera, minus any absurd prices. 15 Beaches That Are Better in the Fall Chateau d’If and Frioul Archipelago: You might know this 16th-century army fortress as a key setting in The Count of Monte Cristo. Chateau d’If on the smallest island of the Frioul Archipelago, just two miles west of the city. Book a roundtrip ferry to and from the Old Port to the Chateau for a 45-minute tour (plus ferry travel time), and you can even hop off at Ratonneau, one of the larger of the Frioul Islands, for lunch or leisure, before returning to Marseille’s port. (Walk to the cozy but sandy Plage de Saint Estève from the Frioul Port if you want some snacks and beach time away from the city.) MuCEM and Villa Méditerranée: If you fancy some art, history, or both, then check out MuCEM, or the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, as well as the neighboring exhibition hall Villa Méditerranée. At the very least, take a walk to the end of the harbor where they reside, to gawk at their marvelous facades. ]] Cathédrale La Major: In stark contrast to the neighboring and aforementioned art museums, this massive 19th-century Byzantine-Roman-Revival–style cathedral is all-imposing. Off the Beaten Path: 27 Epic Views Every Hiker Should See Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde: Marseille’s compass rose, if you will, this hilltop Catholic basilica can be seen from nearly everywhere in the city, and offers stunning panoramas for that same fact. Parc Borély: In a city not known for its parks, the 17-hectare Borély stands out as one of Marseille’s prettiest features. Catch some fresh air in its formal gardens, mosey across the promenade to the coast, or visit the neighboring botanic gardens. La Vieille Charité Cultural Center: History, culture, art, and performance come together at the 17th-century grounds of La Vieille, in the heart of Marseille’s old quarter, Panier. Orange Vélodrome: Be it rugby, soccer, or stadium concerts, the Orange Vélodrome is probably playing host to some event while you’re in town. You can also tour the century-old, ever modernized stadium, in case you can’t catch a game.
Tumblr media
]]
Where to Eat and Drink in Marseille
Pizzeria Chez Jeannot: It’s not just a pizzeria—really, get the steak or the catch of the day—but it’s very much a staple tucked inside the cozy port de Vallon des Auffes. It makes for a romantic date night, or a great group dinner. Book ahead. Chez Fonfon: A perfect place to slurp bouillabaisse and savor a bottle of wine. The fancy Fonfon resides next to the aforementioned Chez Jeannot inside port de Vallon des Auffes. Yes, it’s worth coming to this nook twice in one weekend. Carlotta With: Seasonal dishes, local ingredients, all done real nice and French-like. Come for any meal, or a respite between. How to Order a Pint of Beer in Some of Europe’s Biggest Beer Hotspots Le Café De L’Aabbaye: Plan at least one hours-long aperitif here, alongside Marseille’s hip and scene-y crowd. You might even see a few French A-listers enjoying the same vices. (We did, apparently, according to our sharp-eyed and starstruck hosts.) Le Four des Navettes: Marseille’s oldest bakery (dating back to 1781), and perhaps still its most notable. Get their famed orange blossom biscuits. ]] Le Carrousel: Come here for craft beer, with a dozen on tap and two dozen by the bottle. La Côte de Boeuf: This Vieux Port staple has every cut of meat you might want—not just beef—and 400 kinds of wine with which to chase it all. 18 of the Best Modern Cocktail Bars in Europe Le Miramar: Have your pick between the bouillabaisse or bourride stews, the fixed menu (with the likes of scorpion fish and truffle bass), or the shellfish platter for two. Le Café des Épices: A deep-dive into colorful Mediterranean flavors, with dishes like octopus-pan-fried chard and confit lemon boneless rabbit. Madame Jeanne: Natural wines paired with fresh, small-menu dinners—like confit rabbit-shizo squash. Where else can you get that?

Day Trips From Marseille
Calanques Hiking: The rocky coastline of Marseille leads to the Calanques National Park, a 200-sq. mile grade-changing wonder with an equally rugged shore. It’s most spectacular from its various inlets, the actual calanques, which are walled in by dolomite or limestone and collect the crystal-blue waters in their public basin. You’ve got to earn this reward though, by parking your car and hiking through the national park itself—some of them are reachable under half an hour, others twice or triple the distance. It can be unpredictable, but think of this as a beautiful hike with a relaxing reward at the end (on rough, rock-covered beaches), rather than framing it as a beach day preceded by a hike. I think that mentality will better suit the experience—and will inform the necessary footwear you must wear for the walk. Rent a car; pack water, sunscreen, lunch, and a backup phone charger; and head to the Calanques for at least one full day of your visit—and budget the day, starting early to maximize water time. And yes, you can also boat into some calanques from nearby Cassis or other small towns. But that’s kind of cheating. Oh, and during the hottest months of the year, namely July and August, the park is susceptible to fires, and oftentimes closes for entire days. So check the park calendar the day before you go, to see the forecast and clearance for the following day. The Best Budget-friendly European Cities For Travelers ]] Avignon or Aix-en-Provence: Provence provides plenty in lieu of humbler urban day trips. The medieval, walled-in historic center of Avignon makes for a charming and humbling day trip, just one hour by car and half that by train. Or opt for Cézanne’s birthplace, Aix-en-Provence, which is buzzing with academic energy. It’s a half-hour from Marseille by train or car. Lavender fields near Luberon and Verdon: Want to see Provence’s trippy purple lavender fields? Rent a car and point it to the various farmlands between Luberon and Verdon. Do this in late spring through mid-July, and you’ll feel like you’re on another planet, with sprawling rows of purple—not to mention the soothing scent lingering in the winds. As a landmark, you can route yourself to the picturesque town of Valensole for dinner or lunch—you won’t miss the lavender fields on this drive, so long as you’re in season. What's on the Navy's dinner menu?
Updated May 27, 2019 23:20:24
Tumblr media
Photo: Fifty loaves of bread per day, two weeks worth of fruit and veg and 10kg of croc build up the bulk of LS Luke Bodner's shopping list. (Supplied: Defence Force Recruiting ) When you picture a defence force dining hall, do you imagine sterile metal trays being spooned mass-produced slop for dinner? You are not alone. During the Territory Taste Festival, Navy, Army and Airforce chefs showcased the reality of cooking for the troops, and the menu did not disappoint. The team behind the stovetops served up a selection of territory favourites like buffalo, crocodile and lamb with local bush tucker flavours. Leading Seaman Luke Bodnar said life as a chef at sea came with interesting challenges but had provided him with a lifetime of experience. "I do recommend being a chef for the defence force, yeah you are first up and last to bed, but it's a job I can take anywhere," he said. "You get to use the world's best ingredients, every new port is an opportunity to grow your culinary skills." A peek in the pantry LS Bodnar has been a chef with the Navy for 13 years and visited 16 countries across multiple deployments. He said it was his dad who inspired him to join the defence force. "My dad did 20 years in the navy as a combat systems operator," he said. "I have always loved cooking and food, so I wanted to combine my dad's history and my love of food together that's why I became a chef with the navy."
Tumblr media
Photo: LS Bodnar explained depending on the size of the vessel, there can be up to 30 cooks in the ship's kitchen. (ABC News: Gabrielle Lyons) When walking onto his first vessel as a new recruit, LS Bodnar admitted he had low expectations of the kitchen he would be working with. "My initial assumption of the sort of kitchen I would walk into on a Navy ship was an oven and a deep fryer, but that's just not the case," he said. "The kitchens are large and have spaces for prep, multiple fridges, up to four hot plates, even eight on larger vessels, deep fryers, and every bit of equipment you could imagine." Although LS Bodnar agreed many meals must be produced in mass quantities to feed anywhere between 30 and 100 crew members, he said there's no slop on metal plates. "We bake fresh bread onboard. We are much more than just chefs, definitely gets the crew pretty excited when they can smell fresh bread coming out of that galley," he said. "The quality of food on board is fantastic, from sirloin steaks, spaghetti bolognaise, lamb shanks, lasagne and theme nights too just to avoid the feeling of groundhog day on the boat. "Pizza night is a real favourite. I suppose it's all about comfort food and meals that make the crew feel closer to home."
Tumblr media
Photo: LS Bodnar says his specialties are derivative of his German-Hungarian background, but he's also a dab hand at satay. (ABC News: Gabrielle Lyons) Surprise produce at international ports LS Bodnar said, with each international port he had pulled into, he had learnt to adapt his menus to suit unusual new produce. "When I was on the Gulf deployment in Iraq we received a crate filled with milk cartons that had a picture of a camel on it, the crew were really concerned we would be serving them camel milk for breakfast," he said. "Luckily it was cows' milk just bad labelling. "The hardest ingredient I have had to work with is lambs' brains. Trying to sell lambs brains on the servery line is near impossible so we called them 'lamb nuggets' didn't last for long before we were caught out." Similarly, LS Bodnar said trying to accommodate cultural expectations into an onboard menu had left him high and dry. "When I was deployed to East Timor, no-one told me that the crocodile was their national animal. I didn't know this when I prepared 10kg of crocodile meat for the trip," he said. "I felt like Bubba Gump [American seafood restaurant chain] trying to use croc for just about every meal for the crew croc tacos, boiled croc, croc burgers. "They were pretty sick of it by the time we got back to Australia."
Tumblr media
Photo: Forget mass-made slop in a stainless steal vat. Each of his chefs learn to be bakers as well. (Supplied: Defence Force Recruiting) Christmas dinner and birthdays call for extra special menu editions. "Of course we change up the menu for special events, if it's your birthday and you want pulled pork burgers I'll say 'sweet, let's do it'," he said. "The only downside, as a chef people tend to forget your birthday. One year I made myself a solo cupcake, took it up to the deck with a candle and sung happy birthday to myself." The forgotten sectors of Defence LS Bodnar said he felt lucky to have had his dad give him inside knowledge of the defence force, and positions on offer outside of frontline combat. "I don't think too many people recognise just how many sectors of defence there are," he said. "Being a chef is a great way to see the world and walk out with a trade, which would allow me to work anywhere in the world." Flight Lieutenant Brendon Knopke has focused on the recruiting aspect of defence and agrees there's more than meets the eye working in the defence force. "There are over 300 roles throughout the defence force, most people don't know that the hospitality sector exists," he said. "We want to educate the wider public about how many options there are and show that it's not mush on a plate. "Our chefs are fantastic. It's an exciting sector within our team."
Tumblr media
Photo: After 13 years with the Australian Royal Navy, LS Bodnar has travelled to 16 countries. Australia
G’Day, Mates! We were happy to find that people in Australia really do use the word ‘mate’ all the time. When we were in the planning stages of this trip, Australia was hands down one of the most challenging pieces to plan. Knowing we only had a week, and Australia is almost the same size as the US, we relied heavily on advice from friends who had been to Australia or had lived in Australia. It seemed like each person we asked for advice had a different opinion than the last person. Some pieces of advice included: “Go to Sydney, it’s amazing.” “Skip Sydney. It’s touristy…so go to Melbourne instead.” “You can’t miss the Great Barrier Reef. “ “The Great Barrier Reef takes a really, really long time to get to.” “Go to Darwin- it’s the most authentic city in Australia.”
While the advice was all beyond helpful, informative, and detailed, given our time frame, you can see why it was challenging to plan. We quickly came to the realization that we clearly couldn’t see all we wanted to see in a single week. We knew we would love whatever we decided because...it’s Australia. After an overnight flight from Bali, our first stop brought us to Sydney where the weather was sunny, yet much cooler than the warm weather we experienced everywhere else on this trip. We were happy to finally use the winter weather clothes we packed. We had an amazing AirBnB host who let us check in early and gave us a brief overview of the neighborhood where we were staying. We set out for brunch at a small local restaurant called Yellow, where Nicole Kidman (!!) dines when she is in Australia. We spent the rest of the day wandering the must see areas of Sydney. When we turned the corner to see the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House it was one of those ‘knock your socks off’ views. Similar to seeing the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty. You just don’t forget the feeling when you see something so iconic. It’s also impossible not to think about Finding Nemo and continuously say, “P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney.” Which I obviously did the whole time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on a recommendation from our AirBnB host, we hopped aboard a ferry to Manly Beach. We had an afternoon snack, coupled with a beer called Jet Lag, which was exactly what we needed to fight off the jet lag from our flight. The ferry ride gave amazing views of the Sydney Harbor. On the way back, we saw the Opera House lit up at night, which was equally as stunning as seeing it in the sunshine.
Tumblr media
Our next day in Sydney was spent exploring smaller neighborhoods. We took a train across the Harbor Bridge and found a tiny park called Wendy’s Secret Garden. A woman named Wendy built this entire park in front of her house for the public to use in memory of her late husband.
Tumblr media
We walked back across the Harbor Bridge to an area of Sydney called The Rocks. It was filled with pubs and cobblestoned streets. At this point, it started to downpour, so we popped into the Hyde Park Barracks museum. Second to visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, this museum was one of my favorites. It took me 30 years, but I’ve finally realized I truly value museums that let you experience something the way that it was actually experienced. In this museum, which gives a glimpse into how and why convicts were transported to Australia during the 1800′s, it meant taking a rest in replica hammocks where the convicts slept.
Tumblr media
After exploring neighborhoods in Sydney such as Surry Hills and Woolloomooloo, we boarded our flight to Melbourne. Melbourne greeted us with cloudy skies and another very friendly AirBnB host who immediately gave us recommendations. His suggestions set us off to the Queen Victoria Market, just a couple of blocks away. The massive market had us oogling at fresh produce, meat, seafood, and cheese. We then walked through the central business district to Chinatown to grab some delicious dumplings. The picture below is actually from a restaurant in Manly beach, but I loved the meaning behind it and it just fit better in this spot.
Tumblr media
Our next morning in Melbourne took us to our rental car company, where we cautiously rented a car to drive on the other side of the road. Props to Nick who drove us safely out of Melbourne, which meant tackling a right “hook” turn, tram tracks, and roundabouts- within the first 2 blocks of renting the car.
Tumblr media
We rented a car to be able to drive the Great Ocean Road (GOR) along the Southern Coast, also known as the Surf Coast. We stopped at absolutely amazing sights such as Bells Beach, The Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, The Arch, London Bridge, and The Grotto…to name a few. We stayed 2 nights along the GOR. One night in a youth hostel (admittedly, I booked this thinking it was a great way to save money…let’s just say that cinder block walls don’t give off a very cozy vibe on a cold night) and one night in an adorable AirBnB (I also booked this and redeemed myself for the youth hostel). We enjoyed traveling the GOR at our own pace, eating PB and J while driving through amazing scenery, and experiencing a very popular spot during the low season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We arrived back in Melbourne for two more nights of city exploring. Melbourne is very trendy and hip and we made every attempt possible at making the few pieces of clothing we packed come across as mildly trendy (obviously, this was unsuccessful). Nonetheless, we loved this city. Alleyways filled with street art, graffiti artists painting as you walk by, damn good food, a free tram in the middle of the city, really good coffee, and adorable stores to lazily wander in and out of…what’s not to love?! [shoutout to Nancy in the 3rd picture below]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are continuing our way hopping across the globe and are now on the South Island of New Zealand (Gasp! We didn’t go to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia…we know…as I said, it was a very hard decision). It’s been almost exactly 10 years since I was on the South Island studying abroad in college and I couldn’t be more excited to be back here to show Nick why I love this country. Completely unrelated, but I’ll leave you with this adorable pic of my third favorite FaceTimer, Sam. He’s so chatty…I can barely get a word in….

How to have a good time in Australia, from budget ranger to luxury bunny
Whether you pamper yourself to the fullest or couch-surf your way across the world, the one thing we all have in common is our love for travel. When it comes to countries that can fit both end of the spectrum, we have it on good authority that Australia is one of those rare destination where everyone can have a really awesome time, regardless of their budget. To help you get started, here’s a list of activities that’d show you how to get the most from a holiday Down Under, your way.
The Budget Ranger (Budget Range: Low-Mid)

Elizabeth Quay Bridge, Perth, WA. Image: Tourism Australia
Some of the best vacations are the ones that don’t burn a hole in the wallet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an occasional luxurious treat to put the wind back in your sails. Put your savviness to the test and join fellow backpackers and budgeteers in Australia's hippest urban precincts to eat, sleep and have fun without breaking the bank.
Sydney

Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, NSW. Image: Tourism Australia
Spend an entire day at Bondi Beach for a relaxing (and free!) time under the sun, where you can check out the surfers hitting the waves, great vibes and even art installation.
Or, do a 1-2 hour coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee.
Roam around one of the largest and most important public gallery in Sydney, Art Gallery of NSW, for an impressive collection of contemporary artworks. Admission is free for most exhibitions and on Wednesday, the gallery opens till 10pm with free performances by musicians and more.
Cook up a storm and bring your own food to the Royal Botanic Gardens, where you can have a picnic amidst tranquil surroundings.
For cheap eats, pubs like the Norfolk and the Shakespeare in Surry Hills, or the North Bondi RSL for a cheap burger with a million-dollar view.
Brisbane

A little red ferry called “the city hopper” runs completely free every half an hour, seven days a week, from Sydney Street to North Quay.
With 16,000 works packed inside this eclectic building, you’ll definitely spend a lot of time at the Gallery of Modern Art (free).
Fridays at Brisbane’s Powerhouse are heaps of fun. Lunch in the vicinity will set you back around AUD$10-20 max, but it will be so worth it. The highlight is dubbed Knockoff Fridays, where you’ll find free (good) comedy with views over the river. Booze sold separately.
Melbourne
Tumblr media
Brighton Bathing Boxes, Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria. Image: Visit Melbourne
Unless you’re heading outside of the Free Tram Zone (which will be clearly identified by signs at tram stops), travelling around Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands is free!
Be an urban explorer by wandering around Melbourne’s maze of laneways to reveal quirky storefronts with anything from food, fashion to arts!

As many Boston restaurants pivot to different takeout and/or delivery options, we thought that it would be important to keep track of them all. You can’t eat at restaurants, but you can still support them by ordering their food. This directory is organized by neighborhood, and outlines the status of each restaurant, what they’re offering (delivery, takeout, etc.), and what platforms they’re on. If the restaurant is marked as closed, please consider visiting their website and purchasing merchandise or gift cards from them.
Right now, this isn’t a directory of every restaurant in every neighborhood, but we want to get as close as possible. We’ll be updating this guide daily - so if you don’t see your neighborhood spot, or if you’ve got a restaurant takeout or delivery tip, let us know at [email protected].

FoMu $$$$ 617 Centre St
There’s no better time to order a whole ice-cream cake for yourself, especially since it means it can serve as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight snack. If that’s not reason enough, then you should also know FoMu is also offering delivery on GrubHub.
The Dogwood $$$$ 3712 Washington St
The Dogwood is open 4-9pm, Tues-Sat, and 10am-2pm on Sundays for brunch. They have typical bar food - think pizzas, burgers, and fish and chips - but they’re also doing family dinners for 4-6 people at this time. Visit their website for the full menu, and call (617) 522-7997 to order.

Welcome to The Paleo Diet Blog!
The Paleo Diet--the world’s healthiest diet--is based on the simple understanding that the best human diet is the one to which we are best genetically adapted. It is supported by documented scientific evidence and by real-life improvements, even triumphs, of people winning their personal health battles.
The Paleo Diet is based upon the life work of Dr. Loren Cordain. Dr. Cordain is widely acknowledged as a leading expert on the diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. In numerous publications in the world's best scientific journals, he has documented the dramatic health benefits of eating a diet consistent with human genetic evolution and our ancestral, Paleolithic diet. Learn how a diet based on lean meats, seafood, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables can lead to ideal body weight, optimum health, and peak athletic performance.
This concept represents the "unified field theory" of nutrition that has until now been lacking. The discipline of human nutrition previously had no orienting paradigm to guide research and inquiry, and as such was an immature science. In contrast, cosmology has the big bang theory, which orients all thought regarding the origins of the universe, and geology has continental drift and plate tectonics, which universally guide research into the origins of earth's land mass. In biology, the fundamental, guiding principle is Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, which provides a template for the creation of life on earth.
It has only been in the last two decades that a few enlightened scientists have realized that this principle also represents the basic biological principle which determines the nutritional requirements of any organism - including humans. Our genes were shaped by our ancestors' environment, including our nutrtional requirements. Because what we eat today is so far removed from the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, a discordance exists between our genes and our diet, and this factor represents the underlying reason why we are so sick and overweight as a society.
Dr. Cordain has authored three pioneering books that provide specific applications of The Paleo Diet for general health and nutrition, specifically for athletes, and for curing acne.
The Paleo Diet provides the background and basis for the optimally healthful diet. It has been highly praised by researchers, scientists, and readers from all over the world.
The Paleo Diet for Athletes, written by Dr. Loren Cordain and world-class fitness trainer Joe Friel, provides detailed information on how endurance athletes can improve performance, recovery, and health by eating a slightly modified version of the Paleo Diet.
The Dietary Cure for Acne represents the first real cure--not a treatment--a real solution to this pervasive skin disease. It is a natural acne diet program, based on recent research.
We also offer numerous programs designed to help people address particular nutritional and health needs. These programs can enable you to achieve your health goals whether you seek to:
permanently free yourself from acne
improve your athletic performance
enjoy a longer, healthier, more active life
lose weight without dieting and exercise,
reduce or eliminate your risk of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and the vast majority of all chronic degenerative diseases that affect humanity
