the orange peel theory * fem!driver
how many men in her life would stop to peel an orange for her if she asks randomly?
pairings: f1 grid x fem!driver
warnings: -
notes: juSt a random idea i got when i dreadfully peeled oranges for myself ugh i hate being single sometimes
guys this is the last vr update today i swear i’ve got too much times on my hands actually
(series masterlist) | (📂 the rookie season)
Tumblr media
-> max verstappen, #1
would be in the middle of an interview after quali when she comes up to him with a mandarin orange in hand
max stops mid sentence to look down at her in confusion but will take the orange into his hands as she asks him to peel it for her politely
he would cover the mic and whisper “can this wait? i’m in the middle of something” and she shows him her hands, perfectly manicured white nails with a frown and says “i’ll stain my nails”
and he just does it, peeling the orange as he carries on with the interview after she walks away without him knowing
when he finishes, he turns to give it to her but she’s no longer there and ends up eating the orange during his interview lol
-> logan sargeant, #2
he’d be sitting in his garage minding his own business when she comes and sits next to him with a bag of mandarin oranges in hand
he doesn’t even need to be told
he immediately reaches out and starts peeling the oranges for her, even tearing away the white strands because he knows she hates those
totally nothing to do with the fact that he’s had a crush on her forever
everything to do with the fact that they grew up together and he’s too lazy to fight
-> daniel ricciardo, #3
he’s literally just walked into the paddocks for race day
he feels all cool with all the cameras
suddenly she runs over to him with an orange in her hands and a hopeful smile
“peel this for me please?”
he does it without question
he walks the paddocks with her while peeling her orange and even sparks up conversation with her
-> lando norris, #4
literally walks away when he sees her approaching him with an orange
she’s been doing it all weekend and he refuses to be a victim
also because he’s not that fond of peeling oranges
or oranges, for that matter
she tries chasing after him but when she finally catches up, he simply ignores the request to peel the orange for her
-> pierre gasly, #10
he’ll be literally walking over to the grid for the driver’s parade
looking pretty cool in his cool fits
an orange is presented to him without question
he grins at her and thanks her for the orange
walks away and eats the orange himself
-> sergio perez, #11
would also be in the middle of an interview when she comes up with an orange
would peel it because he’s a mega dad and he’s really taken a liking to her
excuses himself from the interview to do it for her real quick
would take one piece of the orange for himself
claims it’s the taxes for making him do it instead of doing it herself
-> fernando alonso, #14
takes the orange without her saying anything
he’s always seen with seb on race weekends and is very used to her antics
literally gives her the orange peel and one piece of orange
eats the orange without her saying anything
she’s in damn near tears because she really expected fernando to peel it for her without question
-> charles lerclerc, #16
is sad that she didn’t bring him an orange too
still peels it for her though
even though he was in the middle of some paddock game with carlos
asks for a piece and because she loves him and her crush is still very much present, she simply gives him the whole orange
-> lance stroll, #18
he’d have been coming out of his racing home minding his own business
they don’t interact often because she scares him
is almost scared to say no to the orange peeling and actually says no
mutters “i always knew you hated me” as she walks away
which then makes him chase her to peel the orange for her and apologise profusely
because lance and her literally never talk and it took up all her courage to approach him with this orange, she gives him half of the orange
-> kevin magnussen, #20
asks her if she's got an extra orange for his baby girl
she literally came prepared and gives one to cute baby laura
so now kevin has to peel two oranges for two babies
outrageous, if u ask him
-> nyck de vries, #21
has unfortunately departed by the time she decided to be a menace about the orange peel theory
she thinks about him often though
they're texting buddies actually
-> yuki tsunoda, #22
literally came prepared
he's got a packet of candy he bought when he flew back to japan for a visit
she gives him the whole orange
she literally peels the orange for him in exchange for the candy
-> alex albon, #23
was literally walking to the grid for the opening ceremony of the race weekend
says no immediately
but he does change his mind and asks if he can have half if he peels it for her
peels it and takes more than half of the share
-> zhou guanyu, #24
is delighted to even see her because they don't come across one another often
is kinda touched that she asked him to peel an orange but then is disappointed to find out that he's not the first victim and that this is all a tiktok trend for her
peels it anyway
asks her to bring an extra orange if there's a next time as payment
-> niko hulkenberg, #27
she literally cannot find him
doesn't get to participate in the trend
she only saw him once that weekend and it was at the opening ceremony and she only had 1 orange for alex to peel
and on the grid in his race car
-> esteban ocon, #31
absolutely ADORES her
peels it without question
peeks around her shoulder to ask if she's brought another one for him
she says yes and that he's the only one who gets one for himself because she loves him back
-> lewis hamilton, #44
this psycho literally approaches lewis when he's on an interview panel
but that's because he asked her to do it at that time so he has a excuse to escape the panel
he's just so tired of the panel interviews
giggling with her like demons as he peels the orange
-> carlos sainz, #55
peels it for her without question
the only one to ask her why she's got so many oranges to eat and hand out
also the only one to ask her if oranges have been the only thing she's eaten all weekend
inhumanly impossible to eat this many oranges in one weekend perhaps
-> george russell, #63
is literally tearing up because she came to him to ask to peel the orange
he heard from alex what she's been doing
he's been waiting all weekend for her and was sad that it seemed like she had no intentions on letting him participate in her tiktok
she feels so bad for him that she joins him in peeling an orange as well
-> valtteri bottas, #77
is confused because he's just minding his own business using his phone during the driver's briefing
peels the orange for her anyway
asks if oranges are her favourite fruit
suggests eating something less acidic to avoid a tummyache
-> oscar piastri, #81
if anyone's tired of her being a menace with all these oranges, it's going to be him
but because he knows she'll pick a fight if he says no
he will peel the orange reluctantly
takes a picture with the orange because it's the same shade as the mclaren shirt he is wearing
— bonus
-> liam lawson, #30
asks her to fuck off
only ask him to peel an orange when she's lost all the ability to peel one for herself
asks her if he can have one from her orange stash
she says no in tears because he cussed at her
shrugs and walks away
-> sebastian vettel, #5
this clinically insane woman has got this 4 time world champion peeling oranges on the pit wall during qualifying
has him throw her a peeled orange in between laps during qualifying
eats it in the car for a racing 'buff' before she drives out for a lap
she's got too many oranges so he helps her eat some of them
eating oranges = beating mclaren = beating oscar because they're all the same colour and have a correlation obviously

Soo, I have an idea, bear with me, it‘s pretty specific (and slightly self-indulgent) but I think it could be nice
Basically, reader has been with Lando for a while already. She played piano as a child but for whatever reason stopped but when Charles releases his piano songs it inspires her to get back to it and Charles ends up helping her practise and they become really good friends (but honestly purely platonic, maybe even siblings vibes) over it. Cue a little bit of angst when Lando gets worried about his girl spending so much time with another guy. But ta-dah, happy end, it turns out that Charles helped her write a song for Lando as a birthday or anniversary present
I absolutely understand if you don‘t want to write this, I just had a little daydream about it and thought you‘d be the perfect person to write it!
Lots of love for you and your works <3
I made the reader Jules Bianchi's little sister
F1 Masterlist
Tumblr media
Ever since Jules' tragic passing, Charles had felt a certain sense of protectiveness over his little sister. Everybody thought they were going to start dating, that Y/N Bianchi and Charles Leclerc were destined to be together.
Just like her brother, her life was motorsport. She wasn't a driver, that had never been her desire, but she knew everything there was to know about Formula One. She followed Charles around the world like she wanted to with her brother, supporting him like she would have Jules.
She found love at the race track, but not with Charles.
It was 2019, his rookie season when they met. She had been walking through the paddock, making her way to the Ferrari garage, when she bumped into him. In his McLaren shirt and orange hat, nineteen year old Lando Norris was adorable. It took maybe two years before he finally asked her out. They had been happy together ever since.
Something that most people forget when talking about Y/N Bianchi was her love for music. She had been playing since she was a child and it was something she had used to get through her brothers passing.
She could play several different instruments. While Jules was karting, she was practicing violin, piano, and more. But piano was her favourite of them all.
She still practiced regularly, but it was at the back of her mind as life went on.
But then lockdown happened. She and Lando had just started dating, so she was stuck at home in France, left to call him regularly. She called Charles, too, since he was like an older brother to her. As they talked he walked her around his apartment, setting her up against different surfaces as he did something.
"Charles, is that a piano?" She asked as she looked past him.
He took her closer to it, showing her the new piano he had bought over lockdown.
That was what sparked her playing again.
They didn't have much of a chance to practice together after the season started up again. They still showed each other videos they had taken of themselves playing, but they never played together.
Not until just before Lando's 24th birthday.
Actually, it was the summer break, several months before. But she liked being prepared. Lando had been so fucking excited to spend summer break with her, but she had to blow him off, told him to have fun without her.
Instead she was in Monaco with Charles. They were spending a few weeks in his apartment, writing together until they had a song. Charles had booked a studio, where they recorded together.
***
On the day of Lando's birthday he was woken up with a kiss, breakfast, and a good ol' shag.
"I got you something really special this year," she said as she walked in from the bathroom, using a towel to dry her hair. "Do you remember over summer break, when I stayed in Monaco with Charles?"
Lando's expression darkened. "Yeah, I remember," he grumbled. He knew the nature of her relationship with Charles, but he'd also seen what had been said about the two of them.
Sitting beside him, Y/N ran her hands through his hair. "C'mon, Lan, what's up?" She asked, pouting at him.
Lando threw his head back, exposing his throat as he groaned. "I get sent the articles of you and Charles back from before we started dating at least three times a week. And then you spent summer with him in Monaco and-"
Suddenly she put her hand over his mouth, and Lando softly bit her palm. "I was putting together your birthday present in Monaco. That's why I spent the entire summer with him," she said and pulled up her phone.
Lando sat patiently as she pulled out the song she had written for him. He listened to the piano notes she had put together, to the lyrics she had written. It was, to put it simply, beautiful. He could listen to it on repeat for the rest of his life.
"I... holy shit," he said when the song finished. "I fucking love you," He said. "That was incredible."

The Rookie Prodigy - Carlos Sainz x Driver! Reader Part 5
Plot: You are a rookie coming into the 2022 season of Formula One into Alfa Romeo with team member Zhou Guanyu, being in a mid tier team can you help them rise up the ranks. What pressures occur for the only rookies within the 2022 line up!
Credit to macrazylive for the GIF
Tumblr media
As said in your interviews you did spend the time in the break working on your fitness. You and Zhou stayed in Switzerland the whole time, you both were in the gym pretty much everyday.
You guys watched as your team made core improvements to the car, using lots from the Ferrari currently on the grid. You knew the car would be quicker for Italy and you were excited to race there as it was a track your car would do well in.
You didn't think much about what happened with Carlos either, because why would you. It was a heat of the moment thing where there was an obvious attraction to Carlos, he had the hair, the puppy dog eyes, those soft muscles and the accent. The accent was the thing that really got you.
You'd worked too hard to get to where you are now and you weren't going to risk neither your job, nor your reputation for a guy. Regardless of how insanely attractive you found him.
The break between your last race in Australia until IMOLA felt very short despite it being a two weekend gap. Your mind was extremely clear and you were ready for this weekend.
You and Zhou flew to Italy from Switzerland and went right to the track. You both messed around for the whole of media day to the point where people couldn't actually find you both.
You were causing chaos round the paddock, running up and down the strip seeing who could do it the quickest or seeing who could sneak into a different teams hospitality and take a snack.
When media did find you, both you and Zhou couldn't stop laughing at everything the both of you were saying. Sometime's you'd say a joke to him in Chinese which obviously had the two of you screaming of laughter while the team and presenters awkwardly tried to work out what was so funny.
You eventually answered the racing related questions which everyone especially your PR managers were happy for even though you couldn't tell them about any of the improvements on the car. Just that you felt like this would be an more interesting race putting you into the higher mid field than you were right now.
Race day came so soon, and after being told to attempt to sand bag a little in FP1 coming 11 overall. You ended up qualifying 8th overall, which wasn't what you or you team were looking for but after running into some last minute car issues you just weren't there.
Saturday was awful, because of those car issues you didn't actually manage to get out for FP2 and went straight into the Sprint race. Luckily you were in points position coming in P7.
When it came to the race your car was fully ready and so were you. Zhou however had the opposite of you, where he had to have work done on his car when in Parc-Ferme conditions so he had to start from the pit lane.
You'd managed some immense overtakes throughout the race and you managed to come P4. It was your highest position yet and your race engineer couldn't be happier with you.
"Amazing race Y/N, guessing you had changes to the car after Australia and well, we really got to see your driving abilities up there today. You know considering that was a mid-field car, you really really showed us what you are made off!" the interviewer offers.
"Yeah it was a fantastic drive, just shy of a podium. Lando, was driving extremely well and defended from me until the end and I cant congratulate him more for that podium. Is it okay if i call this short, I want to be there to support my friend!" you smile, looking at the time next to the clock by the interviewing knowing the podium would be soon.
"Yes, yes of course!" she shoos you away, making comments on how you have some of the purest and kindest relationships on the grid.
You ran up to where all the Mclaren and Red Bull workers stood. You waited off to the back waiting for Max, Sergio and Lando to come out.
"Hey, we haven't spoken for a while" a voice says behind you making you jump a little.
"Lewis?" you ask in shock, looking around to see if anyone else was here from Mercedes but he seemed to be alone.
"Yes, Y/N?" he asks looking directly at you.
"What are, what are you doing here?" you ask.
"Just watching the celebrations. Well done on the race today, you did amazing!" he compliments making a light blush come across your cheeks.
"Thank you, I er, would say the same for you but today was a kind of shit show for you!" you smile softly.
"Yeah, the car had no pace at all. I'll come back next week in Miami!" he smiles rubbing your shoulder. After a minute of silence he starts the conversation up again.
"I haven't really spoken to you for a while, what's been going on?" he asks titling his head to the side.
"I've just been focused on getting better, I-" you say about to mention Carlos but decide against it.
"You what?" he pushes looking over at you.
"Ceremony is starting, shhhhh!" you smile putting a finger up to your lip and cheer loudly as Lando comes out onto stage. Your jumping up and down, making him laugh and shake his head. All the McLaren workers turn to look at whoever was celebrating more than them, laughing when they see you.
"Of course it's her!" one of them jokes, before turning back as Sergio walks out shortly followed making the whole of the Red Bull Team go wild.
You stand there respectfully as the Deutsch National Anthem starts to play. Once it ends and everyone starts to leave where they are you turn to Lewis.
"Did you want to go out in Miami, I know this amazing Vegan restaurant and I think your personal trainer will be happy with what they serve there" he offers and you think about it for a few seconds.
I mean, Carlos literally cornered you and kissed you, but Lewis he was just asking you to dinner as friends before the next race.
"Yeah sure, I'd like that. I don't have any friends in Florida. So having one will be nice!" you smile, before your PR manager comes up to you explaining that you need to go to the race debriefing.
You and Lewis had of course been photographed in the paddock together and loads of media accounts had gotten a hold of it.
Tumblr media
Carlos had seen these posts, some of them particularly the tweets suggesting that you were both flirting and other posts suggesting that you watched the podium together.
He was shocked at first, he was angry that you would reject him the way you did and then say yes to Lewis.
But after he had some time to cool down and realize what had actually occurred, he came to the conclusion that these posts were the exact reason you couldn't be in a relationship with him. Everyone was always up in your business and it meant that whatever you were doing outside of driving they would use to critique your skills.
You probably had just bumped into Lewis at the podium ceremony and that picture was taken at the perfect time for the media to stir ridiculous stories about Lewis asking you out on a date in Miami to a Vegan restaurant.
He understood why you said what you said, now seeing how easily picked apart your life was. But he wanted to change that, he wanted to be able to be with you without all this animosity.
But how the Miami weekend would change things Carlos or yourself wasn't prepared for.

BEYOND THE GRID: Lando Norris on driving McLarens revival and the responsibility of being the teams senior driver
Lando Norris has had one of his most challenging Formula 1 seasons in 2023, but his impressive P4 at the Austrian Grand Prix could be a sign of better things to come. In this latest episode of Beyond The Grid – presented by Salesforce – the McLaren man speaks candidly to host Tom Clarkson and it’s clear to see how committed he is to the cause. Throughout 2023, McLaren have simply not had the race pace to challenge their rivals for podiums. While that has understandably been difficult for Norris and the team, there is no doubting how much dedication there is from the British driver to win with McLaren in the future. BEYOND THE GRID: James Vowles on his time as Williams Team Principal, Alex Albon, Lewis Hamilton and much more His exploits in Austria point to some vital progress in that regard, but there’s also a great deal of responsibility on his shoulders as the senior driver in the team alongside rookie Oscar Piastri. Throughout this episode, Norris talks about that extra pressure and responsibility within the team and how the fans make a huge difference to his performance at the British Grand Prix. He also discusses coping with the fame that comes with being a Formula 1 driver, and how he deals with criticism. He even considers what kind of dad he hopes to be one day in the future. Norris also goes on to talk about his new team mate Piastri and how compares to his predecessor, and compatriot, Daniel Ricciardo as McLaren continue to strive for improvements going forward. BEYOND THE GRID: Giancarlo Fisichella on driving with Ferrari, Force India and helping Fernando Alonso become a champion To hear Norris's Beyond The Grid interview, hit go in the player above, or head here to catch it on your preferred platform. The only reason I’d want Daniel back at RB is because I love the friendship between him and Max… but even they kinda hinted they wouldn’t be as good friends if they were both still in RB. So AT might be a good fit since they film things together
I’d also like to say people are so sure that Dan will retire after Mclaren because no one would want him , but literally everyone knows that the Mclaren car set is weird and difficult to adapt to… Carlos confirmed this and said he had difficulties at first. I feel like people are forgetting Dan has been driving in f1 and developing his own driving style for over a decade, it’s not going to be super quick to adapt it to a car that fits only to be driven a certain way and is very different to how he drives it. I actually saw someone post about the mechanics of the car itself and why it wouldn’t fit his driving style but I can’t find it now 🤦🏻‍♀️. Other teams will know this and I’m sure some will potentially want him because of his experience, as that is super appealing to teams. They don’t want their whole team to be made up of drivers who are either brand new or have only like 2-3 seasons experience at most because they still make loads of mistakes (look at some of the current grid who have been there for that long and mistakes they make)🤷🏻‍♀️ This is also compared to a driver who has spent his entire (albeit short) f1 career with the same team and was part of their young drivers program so was trained using their set up… I’m not saying Lando isn’t a good driver cause he is, but I’m just saying their situations are very different and shouldn’t really be judged completely against each other
Honestly I think Daniel moving teams did help their friendship, I don’t know if Daniel stayed they really would have been as close because I really don’t think Daniel liked the idea of being second to Max because at the end of the day that’s the direction Red Bull we’re heading with who was the better driver.
As a driver if we are looking at paper Daniel is the ideal driver, poles and wins, amazing overtakes and an all round amazing person but I think teams if they look at his performances last year and now present I really don’t know if teams would go for him especially when they have their rookies gunning for a seat. Daniel has to perform this year and next year especially to get a seat. Like k do understand the car is different from the Renault and the Red Bull but when we look at Checo who did kinda struggle last season but is finding his feet Daniel does need to get a grip of the car sooner rather than later.
And I do get that throwing a rookie in would be tough, they would make mistakes but that’s how they learn. Red Bull gave Max an opportunity at 17 and look at him, Charles got a chance from Ferrari. I think a balance is what teams are looking for and they want drivers who are growing in their programs.
Look I do think Daniel will be here next season but after that I really think it’s just up to how he performs….

2023 Bahrain Grand Prix - Race Report
First of all, hello again, everyone from the 2023 Formula 1 season for which we have been awaiting and even counted the days for over 160 days after a looooooooooong winter break. The Bahrain Grand Prix has been good for all of us motorsports fans, as we have missed the action. It was a great race, despite some unexpected events taking place. So what happened during this race for which we have counted the days? Let's take a look together.
Raining Penalties For Alpine and Esteban Ocon!
As you would remember from the last season, everyone was annoyed by the FIA's decisions: from Red Bull fans to Mercedes Fans, Ferrari fans to Haas fans. Unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed for the 2023 season. As the French driver Esteban Ocon made a millimetric mistake on his grid spot, he was quickly faced with a 5-second time penalty as the FIA cited the reason as ''incorrect starting position''. Alpine and their young driver Esteban Ocon opted to serve the given time during their pitstop; they were shocked by a 10-second penalty. This time the reason cited by the FIA was ''penalty served improperly''. As the young Frenchman served this penalty during his 2nd pitstop, he was hit with another 10 seconds, this time for ''speeding in the pit lane''. As a result, despite having a reasonably lovely qualifying, Ocon couldn't have a lasting advantage. We are extending our support to the young driver.
None Can Stop Super Max!
Red Bull & Max Verstappen's well-known team-driver compatibility continues to elicit admiration and jealousy from fans & opponents. As he is the ''defending champion'' for the 2nd time in 2023, Max Verstappen seems to have his eyes on the 3rd championship in a row. As confidence in himself and his car and aggressive driving style continues to elicit admiration and hate from others, the young champion seems to have vowed to show the same mesmerizing performance. Max opened the season with a victory as he was 12 seconds ahead of his teammate in 2nd place. We congratulate him and wish for the continuation of his success.
What Happened To McLaren?
McLaren, a team loved by many racing fans, made an unlucky start to the season. The team that added the 2021 Formula 2 Champion, young Australian rookie Oscar Piastri to their lineup next to the young Briton Lando Norris; had to pull their rookie out of the race with a steering wheel issue while they saw the chequered flag in only 17th place with Norris also having similar troubles. We hope that these troubles are soon gone for McLaren. Looks like the new technical regulations caused a prominent disadvantage for some of the teams. As we mentioned are affected by the new directories, it would be a shame on our end to not have mentioned Mercedes, one of the most successful teams in the history of our sport. As Mercedes made an unexpected start to the last season (2022) but later developed great for the 2nd half, they made an unlucky start for the 2023 season. While they are experiencing some aerodynamic issues currently, we are sure they will handle it as soon as possible and return to the front of the grid as they should. We wish them the best of luck.
Aston Martin, Alonso, and an F1 Fairy Tale!
Undoubtedly, the surprise of the race and the season is Fernando Alonso in Aston Martin. Aston Martin made an AMAZING start to the season, giving the fans a fairy tale. After adding Dan Fellows, trained by Red Bull's Adrian Newey, to their lineup of engineers, the team appears to have made a strong car. The ''sly old fox'', 42-year-old Fernando Alonso, opened the season with a podium in 3rd place.
Get Well Soon & Congratulations Lance Stroll!
We continue our report with Aston Martin. The young Canadian driver of the team, Lance Stroll, had a horrific accident on his bicycle before the race. Despite having platinum plates placed in his hand with a surgical operation, Stroll was present at the race and saw the chequered flag with points. We hope that he gets well soon, and we also extend our congratulations to him. Let's see what he does with Aston Martin's strong car.
Ferrari & Frustration, AGAIN!
We talked a lot about Ferrari's unfortunate mistakes throughout last season. Unfortunately, the Red team made an unlucky start to the season again. Young Monegasque Charles Leclerc had guaranteed 2nd place throughout the race when on the 41st lap, his engine lost power, and he came to a halt. Since Leclerc is deeply frustrated, strong rumors of a team change for him are circulated on social media. We are curiously following him and wishing him the best of luck.
Red Bull Opens The Season with Bıg Victory!
The successful team Red Bull, having secured a constructor's championship after 9 years in 2022, opened the 2023 season with a double victory after Ferrari's young Monegasque stopped on the track and Sergio Perez snatched the 2nd place. Red Bull is cited as a favorite to take 1st and 2nd places frequently. We congratulate the team and the 2 drivers.
In summary, while raining penalties marked the race, Red Bull drivers saw the chequered flag in 1st and 2nd place. On the other hand, Aston Martin completed the podium with Fernando Alonso in 3rd place and made a surprise start to the season.
With that, we say goodbye for now, and looking forward to seeing you in Jeddah :)))

A Double Life
Chapter 3
A self-indulgent Daniel Ricciardo fic.
Summary: Returning to old passions results in the start of chaos and living a double life. We say we hate chaos, but the thrill is unlike anything else.
Words: 1,575 (short im sorry - its a filler really)
Masterlist / Part 1/ Part 2
Tumblr media
The reception to your hot lap was incredible. The reception to season one of your show was even wilder. You couldn’t quite believe that people actually wanted to watch you live your life. It was a weird life, you’d give them that, but you wanted to drive, and you also didn’t want to let your supervisors down, so this life was the one you would live. You were lucky enough, and you knew there was a lot of luck (and money) involved, to have the most supportive driving teams, drivers’ academy and university. If even one of them decided it wasn’t worth it, or that it was too much hassle, all of your dreams would come crashing down around you.
People pleasing was very much the name of the game.
Your following on social media also increased significantly – which you expected considering there’s more TV coverage for F2 than F3, but this seemed more than normal for an F2 driver. People wanting immediate update on what was going on in your life, wanting to follow on from what was seen on the show.
In an attempt to keep driving life from your uni life, you had been posting more and more on your ‘drivers instagram’ which you had started when you got the opportunity to go testing. What had started as a space for you to spam your ‘omg im back in a racing suit yay’ posts, soon became full of official team and racing pictures and slowly but surely has become your main professional ‘driver Rachel’ instagram. It also meant that you neglected your old account and so many of your friends didn’t technically follow you anymore. Not helpful in them knowing what you were up to.
You had rarely tweeted (you didn’t know what to tweet about and honestly it felt weird) but you had gained tens of thousands of followers almost overnight. Your friends thought it was hilarious. Lewis was right there to help you freak out about and learn to ignore the negativity such a platform brings in. A surprising amount of people had an issue with you coming back to racing and not having been driving for your entire life.
Life at home was as busy as normal, you were in the routine of 5am starts and 16hour days but you honestly couldn’t wait for the race weekends – the small respite that it allowed. For most drivers, race weekends meant early mornings and an intense schedule. For you it was relief. You considered the 7am wakeup calls a glorious lie-in, and if you were truly honest, you were almost bored in the evenings with nothing to do. Although you had taken to writing papers and collating notes in the emptier evenings.
You were growing into a real adult you thought. You might only be 22 but you could hold your own in a corporate setting. You’d done enough presentations to your research group, as well as at the occasional conference to deal with hard, complicated and irrelevant questions. A skill Lewis often claimed he wished he’d learned earlier in his career. The two of you were different than other drivers. He was the first black driver in formula one and you had hopes of being the first female driver in formula one for years. My god and if you could score points, you’d be the first women to do so in over 40 years. If you even made it into formula one.
You’d been approached by a couple of people about testing or going for ‘a chat’. Not all of them followed up with you, and you had a feeling it would be purely miraculous if you even got to test an F1 car. Maybe if you could jump up to third in the standings, you’d be within a shot. After all there had been three rookie drivers only a year ago.
You were currently sat in fourth place in the F2 standings. Frustrating with how close you had been to improving that score even further in a few races, but still incredibly strong for a rookie year. The rookie luck seemed to be following you everywhere, not that you minded. Some people claimed it was purely ‘beginners' luck’ and that you would crash and burn soon enough, others had a far more favourable explanation. You were lucky enough to have people supporting your racing and a fair few of them, who had seen your show, were adamant that your dedication to a strict and somewhat extreme lifestyle, was the reason for your success. You read these uplifting comments, shunning the trolls, saying that you committed to both a stressful academic course and a stressful motorsport career, you arguably worked harder than half the drivers on the grid. You agreed that you worked hard and were perpetually stressed about your to do list, but you could never say you worked harder than other drivers. You merely worked at different times, weirder times.
As the season progressed you reaped the rewards of your hard work, with the odd experience bringing you back to reality. A few race wins combined with a DNF brought you into 3rd place as the season end drew near.
You were feeling great, fighting fit and looking to finish the season on a high. Abu Dhabi was new tracks for you so you wanted to make your penultimate race in Sochi count as much as possible, not wanting the unfamiliarity of Abu Dhabi to throw you off. You’d sat with the team management and your engineers, done the math and you knew what you needed to do to maintain your third place standings. You calculated whether a second place finish was possible, which although unlikely, it was doable with some outstanding results.
By now your camera crew were your biggest cheerleaders trackside, beside your parents of course, perhaps a side effect of the amount of time spent together. Upon discovering a second place finish was technically possible, had lost the majority of their decorum and were hyping you up no end about it. Secretly you loved it, though it also added to the pressure you felt.
People often thought you were exaggerating how close you were to your team, but you honestly loved them all. You spent every day with them, from walking into university with them, to travelling to test days and Grand Prix's with them.
The off-weeks before the end of season, had been planned with an abundance of lab time and note taking, allowing for the final weeks of the season to be nearly fully focused on racing. Well as close as was possible for you to allow full focus on racing. As you were far too aware of now, plans are rarely stuck to, and you found yourself on a mid week road trip from university to Woking. You’d had a series of calls and were subsequently invited down for discussion surrounding a drivers spot with McLaren. Apparently Carlos’ contract was up and he had accepted an external offer.
Excitement would never be the right word, but it was as close as you could convey.
Lando Norris was everything you expected him to be and more. McLaren had the whole teammate situation under control and the ‘perks’ of working for them were more than your entire life had been previously working towards. Your manager okayed the contract and your formula 2 team were stoked to see you progress once more. Your presence in motorsport was sudden and it was making waves.
---
The announcement of your confirmed contract with McLaren for the next season came as you were busy getting dolled up for the end of season gala. All the drivers, from both F1 and F2, would get together at the end of the season to go all out, have fun and hopefully repair a few friendships the competitiveness may have ruined within the season. It was also one of the first opportunities to get black out drunk for a while. So there was that too.
With both the F1 and F2 seasons ending at the same time, it was handy for you to say goodbye to your team mate for the year, as well as the rest of the drivers you’d been competing against. It wasn’t that you wouldn’t see them again, you just wouldn’t be seeing them so constantly next year. The gala also gave you the opportunity to spend some time with your new team mate, Lando Norris, and suss out some of the other drivers.
Lewis had obviously been teasing you about seeing Ricciardo again, having successfully avoided him since your hot lap. Though he did randomly follow you on instagram a couple weeks back. Weird. You weren’t sure what to make of him now. He had always come across well in the media, perfectly charming and unfairly attractive; a fact you didn’t dare say out loud. However, when you had met him that day, he’d seemed almost arrogant and well, you didn’t stay to find out what else.
You felt a little guilty. He had made assumptions about you based on his experiences at races, and you had in turn made assumptions about him. Should you have tried to get to know him better? He did compliment your drive in the end. Perhaps the gala was an opportunity to set things straight; he can see you as a driver and you can see what he is really like.

Charles Leclerc: The Light Of Ferrari Amid The Dark Night!
The 2019 Belgian Grand Prix was the 1010th FORMULA 1 race. But September 1, 2019, would be remembered for one big reason, not 1010. It was a Red-Letter day for Ferrari, not a silvery outing for Mercedes. It was a day where the horse was seen finally prancing having been severed by the lion on the race-track for several consecutive occasions.
Mercedes, until such time, had won eight successive races, with Red Bull halting their charge at Austria, immediately after which there began a ‘you -miss-I-hit’ series starting from Great Britain and ending at Hungary wherein the two teams took turns to win. But Mercedes held the upper hand even in that mini-battle losing to Red Bull only once in Germany.
At all this time, the sport’s arguably most famous outfit watched from the sidelines, as if having been drugged or rendered powerless. Never before the woes of Ferrari fans seemed as abundantly clear as in the first half of the 2019 season where they went winless in all twelve rounds.
But when Charles Leclerc blitzed around the sport’s most famous racing venue at a lap time of 1:42:519, you felt that the dark clouds confronting Ferrari were finally making way for light. Anything could’ve happened the following day but for now, you felt, being in August company, Charles taking a dominant career pole right on the last day of the month.
One day later, he’d hold off Lewis Hamilton-Ferrari basher, Mercedes Master, undaunted achiever, now set for a seventh driver title- to collect the first win of his career.
On Sunday, as he encountered and bettered ‘Hammertime’ in a liberating experience of sheer race-pace, there stood no chance of Mercedes in front of a Ferrari that was flying, and finally.
Statistically-speaking, the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix earned Ferrari a collective of 38 points, Vettel‘s P4+ Fastest Lap earning him 13 in comparison to his young teammate’s 25. But factually speaking, the outcome at the dazzling Spa-Francorchamps truly presented the world a fighter, not some rookie from Sauber (now Alfa Romeo) whose first big news headlines in Formula 1 was when he was confirmed to replace Ferrari’s last world champion, Kimi Raikkonen.
Not that Leclerc’s big moment was some flash-in-the-pan occurrence.
He would win the very next event, this one even bigger than the former, crossing the start/finish line in front of 200,000 attendees at the Italian Grand Prix. Amid herds of fans were the Tifosi, whose bloodshot eyes that had seen more frustration than relief in 2019, was finally witnessing the rise of a young force.
His victory, a pain relief balm of sorts that eased up all that pent-up angst, truth be told.
Then that this was Ferrari‘s first home win since 2010 made Charles Leclerc victory even more special. But truth be told, in order to understand the young man at the Scuderia, and to take stock of his true spirit, you’d have to visit what the Monegasque endured twelve races before, over half a year back in time, before he came to experience the divinity of victory from the top step of the podium.
Do you know why?
Source: YouTube (How Leclerc’s dream weekend turned to agony, official F1 channel)
Because no great thing was ever achieved before heartbreak; the antecedent that often comes across with painful lessons, only so one can relish the true meaning of victory.
In March 2019, Charles Leclerc became the 99th FORMULA 1 driver to take pole, the first of his career, the venue being the Bahrain Grand Prix. Amid massive expectations of seeing sparks flying, hopefully from the simmering red Ferrari, what Sakhir actually had in store was anything one would’ve guessed, not in the least, Charles Leclerc.
Not only did Charles lose the race-lead to his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, but he was also left to fend against an attacking duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
In a sport known for its changing vagaries, this was a real-life exhibition of one albeit at electrifying speeds that Leclerc simply had no control over. But on the big night where he was expected to win, his terribly taxing run in that SF 90 saw him slip from being the track leader into being a tiny ping-pong ball waiting to be booted by the two Mercedes.
You can counter one driver, but how do you contest with a trinity? Within seconds from the start, the shiny pole-sitter was struggling for grip everywhere.
Having gone down into third, he’d soon make the most of Bottas locking up and would lunge ahead to take second, now trailing Vettel, the race-leader.
Soon, the four-time world champion would see Leclerc snatch what was his from the start. Needless to say, this was another big moment that would soon turn into a disaster and inarguably speaking, Charles’ greatest mishap of the evening for no fault of his own.
Right when it seemed Leclerc had done the damage control and was going to script his maiden win, he suffered a mechanical malfunction, his team reporting, “no H-recovery,” over the radio.
Charles had exclaimed, “there’s something strange with the engine,” moments ago.
It soon went from being a Ferrari 1-2 into a Mercedes 1-2.
But that is where Charles demonstrated grace under pressure, defending brilliantly his third until the end, a position he was not willing to concede. Not even as further trouble arrived with Max Verstappen hunting down the Ferrari driver in the closing stages.
There were 9 more laps to go, the Ferrari limping, the gap to Bottas, in second over 30 seconds. Could anything have been worse?
But amid heartbreak, as he drove past the checkered flag to collect his maiden podium in FORMULA 1, not his maiden race-win, a thought went out to how he conducted himself in the post-race presentation:
“Sometimes it’s just not your day and today was not ours. They gave me an amazing car all weekend long. But we come back stronger.”
And this, this final line explains us why Charles Leclerc is so highly rated, why his is the heart of a champion; one who is yet to become one and shall soon- hopefully- win having already shown he can contest just about anyone.
There’s , therefore, less of a surprise and more of gladness to see that in the exact same car in the same season where a mighty fine world champion driver Sebastian Vettel is struggling, Charles is holding Ferrari’s fort.
His 63 points to Vettel’s 17 suggesting why the current blue-eyed Ferrari boy is already their go-to man. Someone who has already tasted both victory and defeat, and at a time where the hopes are dwindling for a team that once gave so many plenty of it.
And maybe that is why at a time where the future of the sport seems promising- in that there’s Max, with Lando, George, Albon, and Pierre rising- even as FORMULA 1 faces an existential challenge to reinvent itself, Leclerc’s presence adds more excitement than ever.
And with that, it raises newfound reason to hope that the ailing team confronting many a dark night- having lost to Mercedes in every single season of the turbo-hybrid era- may finally have found the one ready to take up the fight!
Happy 23rd, Charles Leclerc!

F1 HALF TERM REPORT: All 20 drivers ranked!! 🌏🏁 8. Lando Norris - It's fair to say that Lando Norris has surpassed most people's expectations of him in his rookie season. Along with Carlos Sainz, the 19 year-old Englishman has energised McLaren to its strongest season in years, with the team established as the 4th strongest team of 2019 and Norris well on track for a top 10 finish in the overall standings, should he keep up his present form. In terms of raw pace, Norris has shown that he's pretty much dead level with Sainz; on any given day, one is capable of beating the other, which is an impressive level for Lando to instantly come in and operate at, especially when taking into account that he came in off the back of a 2018 F2 campaign which didn't quite pan out as he'd anticipated, failing to win a race after the opener despite taking 2nd in the standings. Issues with the car, such as in Germany and more notably Canada, where the rear suspension spectacularly melted and broke, have prevented Norris from being nearer to Sainz in the standings, but 10th place overall and 5 points paying positions are a fantastic base upon which to build the rest of the season. In addition, he has a higher average qualifying position than Sainz and his press conference and team radio antics have already cemented Lando as a firm fan favourite. 🏁🏁 | CREDITS: @fastf1 OC | #F1 #FormulaOne #F12019 #F1News #F1Memes #F1Pics #Motorsport #BelgianGP #SpaFrancorchamps #McLaren #McLarenRenault #LandoNorris #Norris #LN4 #L4ndo #Sainz #CS55 #TeamLH #LH44 #JensonButton #MV33 #CL16 #Ocon #VB77 #SV5 #DR3 #KR7 #ScuderiaFerrari #MercedesAMGPetronas #FernandoAlonso https://www.instagram.com/p/B1T_Suoh9p5/?igshid=2zp3i4bzvhp5

David Beckham waves checkered flag – THINGS YOU MISSED from Bahrain GP
The Bahrain Grand Prix was packed with action and full of drama from start to finish.
Ferrari was left to rue motor problems as Charles Leclerc, who has been so dominant throughout the weekend, could not make his pole position in the qualifying count when he settled for third with Lewis Hamilton benefit.
If you missed the non-fear action, Sportsmail is here – to take a look at some of the things you have missed from Bahrain …

Wherever David Beckham goes, cameras & # 39; s and usually many other people follow.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and the Los Angeles Galaxy player were present in the desert to take a racing action and were n kept busy by the organizers. Beckham wrote visits to the Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari garage before sharing a hug with Lewis Hamilton to wish him good luck before the race began.
The English couple had to turn around when Beckham was convinced that he was waving the checkered flag when, surprisingly, Hamilton won the race and the Ferrari rolled into a problem with their engine.
Get it in your garage every week, Lewis!

Marshals have a dance …
[1945900] 2] The season is still in its infancy and when F1 enters the city, there is always the carnival atmosphere.
That was certainly the case for the race marshals during the parade of the drivers, because they all showed their dance movements while someone was clapping in a horse mask.
It was wrong then and still does not work now.
Still very nice.
Respect your elders, Lando!
What a performance by McLaren and Lando Norris – the young driver on the starting field – while he held the 39-year-old Kimi Raikkonen to finish sixth.
It turned out to be an intriguing battle from start to finish, but the youngest driver overcame the oldest driver to the delight of those in orange overalls in the McLaren garage.
I produced great catch-up maneuvers when needed and showed that I was just as adept as I was defending, while finishing his first points as he drove from F1 to F1 this year.

Apart from Norris experienced teammates.
Alexander Albon, just 23, finished ninth and assured his first point finish since he stepped up this season, leaving teammate Daniil Kyvat in his wake with the other Toro Rosso who could not come home until July 12.
What George Russell joined As far as Williams is concerned, it is still a mountain to climb in the points to ever finish, but all he can do in his first F1 campaign remains Robert Kubica teammate out-performing.
It was close, but the driver of King & # 39; s Lynn kept his guts.
Renault rue freak retirements
What happened to Renault probably won't be repeated long, long time. It was a strange moment that I can't remember if I've seen something like that before.
With just three laps left of the season, both Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg were stunned when their cars lost power.
They were in the points at the time and it will have an adverse effect on both driving behavior and the designer table.
A technical problem is a technical problem, the driver had no fault whatsoever, but it was really a miserable end to what seemed like a rather positive day for the French team. With the race descending to an expected finish there was late drama from the Renault retired "

Carlos Sainz still has a weekend to perish 9007]
Life at McLaren has not been going to plan the ambitious Spaniard since he left the scene kiss registered.
Early contact with Max Verstappen's Red Bull saw sparks fly from the orange McLaren and in reality, Sainz was never fully recovered.
With the problems that were going on at Renault, it was decided to remove the car during the closing moments. Bitter disappointing.
It was another DNF for Carlos Sainz of McLaren, because he had to forget a race in Bahrain <img id = "i-29946baded4e5185" src = "https: / /i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/03/31/19/11692728-6870603-image-a-8_1554057050534.jpg "height =" 426 "width =" 634 "alt =" <img id = "i -29946baded4e5185 "src =" https://ift.tt/2OCaFQh "height =" 426 "width =" 634 " alt = "[Het was weer een DNF voor Carlos Sainz van McLaren, want hij had een race te vergeten in Bahrein] Certainly no love was lost between Ferrari and former Mercedes world champion Nico

The two teams enjoy (I think) fierce rivalry with their drivers in the fight every year for the world championship and Sebastian Vettel spun away while he fought with Lewis Hamilton, Rosberg could not hide his wild thoughts.
& # 39; Vettel continues what he was doing last year, screwing it up again, turning around in a fight again, & # 39; he said during the race commentary.
Safe to say that Mercedes fans loved that.

The Rookie Prodigy - Carlos Sainz x Driver! Reader Part 6
Plot: You are a rookie coming into the 2022 season of Formula One into Alfa Romeo with team member Zhou Guanyu, being in a mid tier team can you help them rise up the ranks. What pressures occur for the only rookies within the 2022 line up!

'Where is Y/N Y/L/N' was the talk of the paddock on the coastline of Miami after you missed media day on Thursday. Zhou was there alone trying his best to make funny content but clearly the lack of you there was affecting him.
The presenters for Sky Sports also could tell there was a lack of you in the paddock. Obviously it was still loud thanks to Lando and those kinds of energies.
But where it was media day people didn't think too much of it, maybe you slept in and was too embarrassed to rock up late, or maybe you missed your Wednesday flight ... or maybe you'd been asked by your PR team not to show up because of everything with you and Lewis in the media right now.
There was a lot of noise around Lewis and you. A lot of it wasn't kind either, the worst being that people assumed you slept your way into your seat as the only woman in F1. This started a spiral of hate towards you, people had somehow doxed you and death threats had been sent to your home and you couldn't even log into your socials because it was so bad.
When you didn't arrive for the first free practice that's when more attention was brought to your absence.
"Have you guys seen Y/N?" Carlos asks the little group he was stood with, concerned he hadn't seen you.
"No, she wasn't here yesterday for media day and she didn't come out in FP1, her side of the garage was actually so slow and empty. Their main focus was on getting Zhou out!" Lando admitted having seen with his own eyes what your absence had done to the team.
"As a rookie it's risky missing free practice, maybe they'll announce a replacement for her tonight?" Charles offers sipping on his drink that he'd taken with him from their hospitality.
"I can't believe it, I wonder what's going on!" Daniel nods, wondering why the paddock princess wasn't here.
Things got stranger when you also didn't turn up for FP2 on the same day.
You also weren't there the next morning and everyone was thinking Alpha Romeo were going to have their first DNS of the season where you still weren't around.
It was around 20 minutes until qualifying was supposed to start when someone noticed your paddock pass had been scanned in. They sent someone from the FIA to search and see if it was a mistake or if you had in fact come in.
By the time someone reached the garage to ask you were already in your car waiting to come out for qualifying. You were nervous as hell, you'd missed out on all the free practices and never driven the Miami circuit.
You drove out and ended Q3 in P14, one away from the cut off and it was on a lap where you'd only just managed to get passed the flag in time to get that vital last lap in. Zhou despite having been around the whole weekend and participating in all the free practice sessions didn't have as great a run as you coming P17 and being eliminated for Q2.
Come Q2 and the commentators were in shock with how quickly you were coming to grips with the track. You were only a few tenths of a second off Lando's time coming in P6, a drastic change from your previous result.
You stayed sat in the car in Q3, everyone in the garage knew you didn't really want to talk right now. So it was only you engineer talking to you every now and then telling you stats and times.
Q3 again was pretty good and you were managing to start P5. And considering the week you've had you felt really good about that result.
The rest of the weekend just had awkward vibes, you could tell in your post race interviews how much you didn't want to be there.
"Y/N, it's great to see you back around here and what a great result for you despite being absent for all your free practice sessions!" the interviewer says and you just nod, it wasn't a question. It was a statement so you didn't have to answer.
"How do you feel about that result?" they ask.
"Yeah, good. I think I got as much as I could out the car as I could!" you reply and the interviewer sighs knowing this would be a hard interviewer seeing as this was the first time they were experiencing icy and cold Y/N.
You ended up the interviews quickly, your PR apologizing to the last few saying you wouldn't be doing any more of them.
You went back to the hotel exhausted, just wanting to sleep and get this weekend over.
Twitter was going crazy over how you had been acting in your interviews, your fans specifically were really concerned and of course because it was brought up online all the other drivers saw their reactions and had to go look for themselves.
Tumblr media
The ones who hadn't really interacted with you just put it down to an off day, which did happen with drivers particularly rookies who were being too hard on themselves which wasn't uncommon in the newbies.
But for those who did know you and had made the effort to welcome you to the sport, like Zhou, like Carlos, like Lewis, like Charles and Lando and George and Alex ...
They all could tell something was seriously wrong, but it seemed impossible for anyone to get hold of you.
Even the next day on race day, you showed up in the paddock for the national anthem of America, and were ushered straight to your car by your PR team, all the other drivers sharing a look of confusion.
You looked so exhausted and worn out, but they didn't know why.
The race wasnt good, as well as being tired from a severe lack of sleep, there was also your mental state affecting your drive. So you went from P5 down to P7, still in the points but it just didn't really feel ... good enough and you went back to the hotel disappointed.
Your PR team had refused you do any media after the shit show you caused with your bluntness yesterday and thoughts it's best to send you on your way to Switzerland to sort everything out that had been happening and get ready for Spain.
"Charles, she wont answer me..." Carlos had complained to Charles worried about the young driver.
"I don't know Carlos, we're all routing for her and hoping she's okay but maybe she just needs some time alone because of all the pressure. She the first in years to be here, as a woman you know... i cant imagine the pressure she's been feeling" Charles explains with a sigh.
"Mmmmm Toto have you heard anything about Y/N... she's well I don't think she's okay!" Lewis asked his boss in the Mercedes garage.
"Mmmm nothing, but i'll reach into my contacts. I knew her since she was 13 because she was the frist female Mercedes Development Driver/ Young Driver we sponsored. It's a shame really she isn't driving for one of our teams" Toto sighs, knowing Lewis wanted answers starting to tap away on his phone.
You knew these people cared about you, but right now... what you were dealing with and experiencing, you didn't want to drag any of them into.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen said Vettel “had an amazing career” and is “a great ambassador for the sport”, while long-time rival Lewis Hamilton said he was convinced that “whatever he does, it’s going to be great if he applies himself the way he has here.” Lance Stroll, Vettel’s current team mate, said he was “a great team player and someone that that’s been really easy to work alongside”. Lando Norris praised how approachable the multiple champion had been, describing how Vettel was “always open for a chat, which is always something you admire and have a lot of respect for, when you are also such big competitors at the same time.” Carlos Sainz Jnr, a former Red Bull junior driver, said Vettel had been “a great role model” before his debut in Formula 1. “Everyone in the paddock loves him,” Sainz said. “You will not hear someone speaking bad about Seb.” Verstappen wants 16-race calendar on just “the good tracks” Max Verstappen says he would like to have fewer races on the F1 calendar. Asked what one rule he would like to see changed in the sport, the world champion replied “less races.” The 2022 season will feature a record-equalling 22 rounds after being originally planned to include 23 before the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix. Asked what the ideal number of rounds in the calendar would be, Verstappen said “I think, like, 16. Just pick all the good tracks. Leave all the others out.” The 2023 F1 calendar is tipped to feature a record-breaking 24 rounds with the addition of races in Las Vegas and Qatar. Illott signs “long term” extension with Juncos Hollinger Ilott is extending his stay in IndyCar IndyCar rookie Callum Ilott has signed a “long term” contract extension that will see him remain in the series with the Juncos Hollinger team for the “foreseeable future”. Ilott is competing in his first full IndyCar season with the team after racing at three rounds with the team at the end of 2021. Ilott currently sits 21st in the standings with 150 points with a best finish of eighth in the Indianapolis Grand Prix. “The potential that we have shown as a one car team can only get better as we grow and expand this programme,” said Ilott. “I am super happy to continue working with all the team members at JHR, we have created a great foundation together this season.” Newgarden cleared to take part in practice Penske driver Josef Newgarden has been evaluated by IndyCar’s medical director Dr Geoffrey Billows and cleared to take part in Friday’s practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. A further evaluation will be conducted afterwards to determine whether the driver who lies third in the championship can continue to compete in its 13th round. Ramblings: Converted Touchdowns for Stars and Islanders, an Avalanche of Wins (Jan 21)
Converted Touchdowns for Stars and Islanders, an Avalanche of Wins
What can you say about John Klingberg, who added another three assists on Saturday to give him 40 assists and 46 points, which leads all NHL blueliners. In just 48 games, Klingberg has nearly equaled his point total from all of last season (49 points in 2016-17), while his 40 assists leads all defensemen and is top 5 among all skaters. His eight-game point streak ended on Thursday, but he still has 19 points in his last 14 games.
But it wasn’t all Klingberg for the Stars in a 7-1 rout over Buffalo. Klingberg usually provides most of the Stars’ offense from the blueline, but Esa Lindell chipped in with a goal and two assists of his own to go with a plus-4. When I watched the Stars play live last season, something that caught my eye was how much icetime Lindell receives, as he is Klingberg’s regular defense partner. Lindell has averaged nearly 22 minutes of icetime over the last two seasons, although he usually defers to the second power-play unit. I know Julius Honka has been more appealing to keeper owners over the last few seasons, but I’d keep an eye on Lindell, who a much more established NHL defender at this point.
The Stars’ scoring attack usually falls off a cliff after Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Alexander Radulov, and Klingberg, but they did receive scoring help from another forward on Saturday. Mattias Janmark scored two goals and added an assist with a plus-2. The points were Janmark’s first in five games. Janmark lined up with the previously scratched Jason Spezza, who added two assists of his own to give him four points in his last three games. I discussed Spezza in more detail a few days ago in the Ramblings.
With a goal and an assist, Jamie Benn was able to extend his point streak to seven games. How does Benn stack up against a player like Brad Marchand? This week’s Cage Match featured a comparison of the two.
*
Don’t look now, but Michal Neuvirth has back-to-back wins over the past three days. Neuvirth stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced in the Flyers’ 3-1 win over New Jersey. The Flyers are back in action today against Washington, so expect that Brian Elliott will be back for that game. Elliott has played more than he’s probably used to over the first half, so don’t be surprised if we see more of Neuvirth beyond just back-to-back games during the second half. A lot will depend on Neuvirth staying healthy, though.

When I played minor hockey many years ago, there were three medals given out for each team at the end of the season: most valuable player, most sportsmanlike player, and most improved player. If these were handed out to NHL teams, the most improved medal should be handed to the Colorado Avalanche, who have already exceeded last season’s point total in half the games.
We know Nathan MacKinnon has evolved into one of the top value picks this season, and he did his part by adding a goal and an assist. But there are two other Avalanche who had strong performances on Saturday.
In stopping 27 of 28 shots, Jonathan Bernier has now won eight consecutive games, just one fewer than his team’s present win streak. During his personal win streak he has a 1.47 GAA and .958 SV%. I know the general rule is that a starter isn’t supposed to lose his job because of an injury, but this recent run could mean that Bernier factors into the Colorado goaltending equation more even when Semyon Varlamov returns. I know the Avs have faith in Varlamov, given the fact that they didn’t protect Calvin Pickard during the expansion draft. But Varlamov has not posted a GAA below 2.80 or a SV% above .915% over the last three seasons.
Erik Johnson scored a goal and added an assist in this game. He has never stood out offensively in his career, never reaching the magic 40-point mark that seems to mean universal ownership for a defenseman in fantasy leagues. But this is at least worth pointing out:
Erik Johnson has 17 points in 32 games since the start of Nov when the Lando-Mac-Ranta line was put together.
— Stephen Laidlaw (@SteveLaidlaw) January 20, 2018
Maybe I should have acquired Johnson when someone offered him to me in mid-December for a player that I eventually had to drop. But at the time I couldn’t have forecasted Tyson Barrie’s injury just before Christmas. Here’s another stat for you: since Barrie’s injury, Johnson has seven points over his last ten games (all even strength). In addition, EJ’s icetime is up nearly two minutes per game in January, some of which is power-play time. So with Barrie possibly returning next week, Johnson could be back to his old role next week, which isn’t as fantasy friendly.
*
The hottest line in hockey might be the Bruins’ top line of Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, and Patrice Bergeron. This trio has combined for 56 points (25g-31a) in their past 16 games. The leader for this line on Saturday against Montreal was Pastrnak, who filled the multicategory stat sheet with two goals and added an assist with a plus-3 and eight shots on goal.
While the Bruins are on their 16-game team point streak which started on December 16, Tuukka Rask has nine wins, a 1.80 GAA and a .933 SV%. He is also 13-0-2 in his last 15 decisions. After a rough start, he’s playing like one of the league’s top goalies while the Bruins have been playing like one of the league’s top teams.
With his goal against Boston on Saturday, Max Pacioretty now has seven goals in his last seven games. Your window to buy low on him should officially be closed. At the same time, this should be a lesson that we shouldn’t just give up suddenly on consistent, proven performers.
*
Morgan Rielly was not in the lineup for the Leafs on Saturday with an upper-body injury. As a result, Jake Gardiner moved up to top D pair with Ron Hainsey. Gardiner took full advantage of the opportunity, recording three assists. The move didn’t affect Gardiner’s overall icetime, though, as he has been averaging around 25 minutes per game in January and logged 24 minutes in this game. Gardiner is now on pace for his second consecutive 40-point season and has five points in eight games with the increased icetime.
*
You could say that the Islanders have been shooting the lights out this season.
{youtube}2jIQUlDykss{/youtube}
With Ryan Pulock scoring five points in the Isles’ seven-goal explosion, an Islanders’ rookie has recorded five points in a game three times this season (Mathew Barzal has the other two instances).
Pulock’s line ended up as a goal, four assists with a plus-3 and four shots on goal. He has the offensive upside to be a fantasy contributor, but getting onto the NHL team prior to this season has been a challenge. Now that he’s on the team, icetime has been a challenge, as he has averaged just 16 minutes and change. But his situation has improved recently with the injuries to Johnny Boychuk and Calvin de Haan. He’s also been receiving second-unit power-play time, for what it’s worth.
Brock Nelson hasn’t exactly gotten in on the Islanders’ scoring jackpot this season, but he did score a goal and added two assists leading all Isles’ forwards in scoring. Nelson had not scored a goal in his previous four games and had not scored a goal in his previous 17 games, which shouldn’t be that surprising considering that he’s played outside of the top-6 for much of the season. But what happens to his fantasy value if John Tavares leaves?
*
I’ve been leaving Antti Raanta on my bench for much of the season, but maybe I can roll the dice and start him now. Raanta has a 1.91 GAA and .933 SV% this month, even though he has just two wins in six games.
With two goals on Saturday, Christian Dvorak snapped a 10-game goalless drought.
*
The Kevin Fiala/Nick Bonino/Calle Jarnkrok line was on fire on Saturday, combining for eight points. Fiala scored his first multigoal game of the season, which was a feat that he couldn’t manage when he was on the red-hot line earlier this season with Kyle Turris and Craig Smith.
Turris recorded an assist in this game, but I’ve moved him to my bench because he’s been ice cold. Turris has just three points over his last 13 games, which of course is the inevitable cool down after his hot streak (17 points in 17 games) when he first joined the Preds.
*
Opportunity knocks for Elias Lindholm. He replaced the injured Sebastian Aho on the Hurricanes’ first line and on the first-unit power play and took full advantage, scoring two power-play goals and taking five shots on goal. With Aho’s status uncertain after suffering a concussion and lower-body injury after a nasty hit from Mark Giordano, Lindholm will need to be leaned on while the Canes’ leading scorer is out of the lineup. We’ve been waiting for some kind of breakout, and we may get something at least in the short term.
*
Brent Burns is doing his thing again. With a pair of assists on Saturday, he now has at least one point in 16 of his last 19 games.
*
Want to know who the fantasy MVP is? According to Yahoo, it’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is owned in 45 percent of the top 500 Yahoo Public League teams. No one else is owned in more than 25 percent of this collection of teams, so this is a remarkable number.
Unfortunately, with the Bolts’ recent three-game losing streak, Vasilevskiy has been sputtering. Going back to the last five games (two weeks) Vasilevskiy has posted a horrific 4.64 GAA and .850 SV%. He’s been fantasy’s most valuable goalie up to that point, so you’re obviously best to be patient unless you can acquire a proven stud in return. But this slide has to be at least somewhat concerning. The Bolts’ next two games are back-to-backs on Monday and Tuesday, so expect to see Louis Domingue for one of those games. Vasilevskiy is second in the NHL in minutes played, so it might be time for a little rest.
*
Jesse Puljujarvi didn’t look like a player that had been held without a point in his previous eight games, scoring a goal and added two assists with a plus-3 and six shots on goal. The Oilers have moved Puljujarvi off Connor McDavid’s line, but one constant linemate since his AHL recall has been Milan Lucic while he appeared to connect with Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers haven’t been happy with their scoring from the wing since trading away Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, so expect Puljujarvi to figure significantly in their plans going forward.
Paul Coffey has joined the Oilers in some capacity, with a formal announcement coming today. It will be interesting to see how this affects the Oilers, particularly their defense, in their latest attempt to get things right.
McLellan says Coffey’s focus will be on skill development, at all levels of organization, and with a focus on D in particular. Will work with prospects and with their NHL dmen as well. More to come tomorrow.
— Ryan Rishaug (@TSNRyanRishaug) January 21, 2018
Alex Edler might not move the needle much in fantasy. But with an assist on Saturday, he currently has a five-game point streak with six points over that stretch. He's also been shooting the puck a ton recently. With six shots on goal on Saturday, Edler now has 33 shots in seven games this month. Only Brent Burns, who leads all players by a wide margin in shots (44), has more shots on goal among defensemen than Edler this month.
