What's the bed/mattress situation at the GPDA strike sleepover?

George: wants to share with Alex but feels he needs to stay alone as a Director or go with the rookies. Has his personal pillow of course.

Alex: will take George's hand and tug him towards his mattress.

Lewis: special orthotic mattress, doesn't share.

Lando - Oscar - Carlos: Lando is cold. Puts three mattresses together, grabs Oscar and Carlos, and puts himself in the middle.

Pierre and Esteban: go on opposite sides of the room but can't help but look at each other (when the other is not looking)

Franco: goes from one mattress to the other.

Yuki: shares with Pierre.

Zhou and Val: share because they are good teammates.

Nico and Kevin: don't share but put their mattresses next to each other.

Charles and Max: surreptitiously get their mattress closer and closer to each other. Will wake up cuddling in between the two mattresses

Checo: alone on his mattress. snores

Fernando: alone on his mattress, snores louder.

Ollie and Kimi: try to understand why they are here but are happy to share.

Jack: in the middle of the room, in both Pierre and Esteban's lines of sight.

Liam: keep Jack company. Complains that Checo and Fernando are snoring.

Edit : sorry, I forgot Lance!

Lance : full bed provided by Dad with silk sheets. Would have invited Fernando over but he snores!

well i'm going to speak and hopefully not regret it lol (we will see..). but the fact that charles has known guanyu for ten years and still can't seem to find the effort to remember and say his surname correctly, then trying to laugh it off and be all uwu about it just pmo lol. like this isn't cute or funny especially since 'zhou' is not a hard name to pronounce either....

#idk lol this isn't the first time i have spoken about the whole zhou/zoo pronunciation. and i stupidly thought that we would be done w it #after last year since guanyu isn't on the grid full time anymore. guess i was wrong 🙃#like i would fully understand if it's something that's hard to pronounce in english #like the way people pronounce the 'yu' part in guanyu's name is wrong lol but idc about that bc that sound literally doesn't #exist in english and even i struggle w it a little (it's more like 'yree' than 'you' btw)#but like people can pronounce the name 'joe/jo' quite easily so it's like. c'mon now lol. when does it become weaponized incompetence #rather than genuine incompetence ykwim

Ok but what is the GPDA strike sleepover? I’ve heard people speak about it and all the time I’m so confused lol 😂

So... this needs a bit of a history lesson ;-)

The GPDA is the association of the drivers.

It's in fact quite an old thing as it was created in 1961.

The strike sleepover is a reference to what happened at the South African GP in 1982.

Before the race, there was a strike led by the GPDA and in particular Niki Lauda and Didier Pironi. They were protesting against the new superlicence rules imposed by the FIA.

The protestation meant that most of the drivers retreated to a meeting room in their hotel and went on a strike until a compromise was reached with the FIA. (a few drivers didn't take part).

That's when the sleepover part happened with the drivers sleeping over mattresses provided by the hotel in the meeting room.

I need to mention the most famous quote linked to this: Patrick Tambay said, about Gilles Villeneuve and Alain Prost sharing a mattress: “If those two have kids after this tonight I might as well retire now.”"

In the end, an compromise was reached with the FIA but the GPDA was dismantled (and re-created in 1994 after the awful Imola weekend).

So, we are now imagining that the GPDA could organise a strike/sleepover again :-)
