Okay, so I vividly remember when the news that a live-action Winx was coming, and everybody was soooooo stoked (including me), and there was the craziest surge of fancast tweets ever. Like, I literally fought with someone on Twitter who fancasted Madelaine Petsch as Bloom, and I was like...well, no! Either way, the role went to Abigail Cowen, who actually plays Dorcas in 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina', which is a part of the Riverdale universe that Madelaine Petsch is also in because, well, she's in Riverdale. And then K-pop stans were fighting over whether or not Twice's Momo or Blackpink's Lisa would be a better Musa; it was just a crazy day. Understandably so; it's always a big deal when beloved animated shows are adapted into something more real. I personally was jumping for joy.

And then the promo pics were released, and everybody very quickly went, "wtf?" (including me)

Good god, those outfits were so fucking awful. No, they weren't, actually, they were pretty normal, but when you take into account the source content, it was actually pretty fucking bad. That was only a part of the outrage, though; a lot of it came from the whitewashing of Flora's character, which actually wasn't whitewashing but a completely new character named "Terra." Which. Is so...! they ended up introducing Flora later, but I feel like that was due in part to the outrage because, similarly to Bratz, Winx was partially so popular due to its diverse range of characters and cutting out the Latina character to replace her with a white one with the EXACT SAME POWERS is absurd.

Also, they whitewashed Musa, a fully Chinese character. The actress that plays her is part Singaporean, which, yes, is Asian, but they're not interchangeable. Even crazier is she's mostly European and very white-passing, so it's like, uhhhhh.

I do love the dark-skin representation with Aisha, tho, like they ate that ONE thing.

Okay, so now for MY thoughts. I don't hate the show, not in the slightest. I only watched season 1, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the only reason I didn't watch s2 is because when it came out, I didn't have the steam to watch something entirely new, and I ended up just forgetting about it. I don't think the show is bad; I just think that when you remember the name it's attached to, it becomes very, very bleak in comparison to its source material.

There's been a very big trend within the past ten or so years where big media companies are "rebooting" childhood favorites but with darker and more mature plots, which was cool the first couple of times, like Riverdale s1, absolute gold (before it devolved into whatever tf it became) and the early seasons of chilling adventures of Sabrina. It was something new and fresh like Twin Peaks meets your beloved animated characters from when you were kids, but it very quickly started to feel like it was an easy way to gain an audience. Fate: The Winx Saga could've been something good had it not been attached to the Winx brand. But then it would've run the risk of failing (which it did anyway) instead of being an overnight smash hit solely because of the namesake. Even if people hate watched it, those are still views, and those company execs get their paychecks.

Like I said, I'd have no qualms about it if it was an original series, and oftentimes I forgot that it wasn't one. But that's the problem, it wasn't.

Making live-action versions of cartoons will always prove to be difficult because those cartoons aren't necessarily meant to translate into real life; that's the whole point. They're not real. They're different and original and have special powers, unrealistic proportions, and weird stances!! When those cartoons are made into life action shows, they try to make them as natural as possible bc, duh, a real person doing those things would look dumb as hell, but also, those shows were enjoyed because of all of those little things that don't translate well in real life. At least that's why I enjoyed them.

I feel like I'd be doing a disservice to even compare the shows because, in my head, they're not even remotely similar. Like it was beyond "making it darker," it really was just an entire show; there was even some continuity between the Archie comics and the bizarre acid trip that was Riverdale. I know I probably sound like a broken record saying how drastically different it was, but the laundry list of differences is so insanely long.

I've rewatched the original Winx many, many times. I know the pilot episode like the back of my hand and all of the major plot points of the first few seasons (bc I abandoned it once that 3d animation came into play). I supposed this is how people who watch movie adaptations of books feel, pointing out details that are "minor" but don't feel minor when you know the source material so well.

Here's a list of differences I can think of off the top of my head from the first season alone because I didn't watch the second in its entirety, so this is just from my understanding:

alfea is in Solaria, which...ughhh, don't piss me off. It's located in Magix in the OG series, along with the Cloud Tower (school for witches) and the Red Fountain (school for specialists), which, btw, were both axed as far as I know.

Witches are kinda sorta a thing? Instead of witches going to a whole different school and having their own unique powers, they live in hiding and are called blood witches because they blood bend.

There are no Trix, just Beatrix. Who is a fairy and an annoying evil one at that?

They are all British. Everyone is British. I don't understand why Bloom is the token American. I don't understand why she is the sole American to go to that school; it doesn't make sense to me in the slightest. Like, if it's a school for all fairies, then...why? And if it was only for British fairies, then...why?

Sky and Stella date, there is so Brandon; in fact, most of the specialists have been axed. (Helia plz come back to me, bae. I took you for granted last time)

Obviously, there's no flora until season 2...which. Don't pmo.

Ummm, the whole "the burned plot"? Which is interesting, I'll admit.

No transformations except that weak ass one they had in s2 that I saw on Twitter and closed the app in a fit of rage

Stella is a bitch?????? She's literally the definition of a girl's best friend, fashion icon, willing to die for the people she loves, and big golden retriever energy. And they just. They made her so awful. She does have a redemption arc, but it's just so...

I can't think of any more off the top of my head, but those are the ones that really stuck with me well over a year after I've seen it.

so what does this mean? This means...well, idk what this means. Like I said previously, the show, if it was standalone, would be absolutely fire i think, but the moment they attached the Winx name to it, it suddenly had really big shoes to fill, and it just couldn't do it, not with those major changes. So many beloved aspects of the original show were taken out for a bunch of new things to be added in, making it feel like something completely new.

If the show wasn't advertised as a Winx show and someone approached me saying, "Hey, ro, if you like Winx, you'll like this show because it's like a darker, more mature version of it." I'd be interested. But the moment it became "Hey, ro, have you seen the new winx show?" it became something else, something with expectations, which often doesn't fare well for live adaptations.

Sorry, this got so long, and sorry I took so long to post it. I hope this jargon made sense, I got carried away.

Kind of so my mom named me something completely different but my Grandma changed my name when she came to get me from the hospital. My first name was originally Jasmine but my Grandma changed it to Joyce cause it sounded like my Grandpa's name George. My middle name is a disaster cause my aunt chose it, its horrible and i hate and i want to change it to Jasmine. I do think Joyce fits me as a first name better though

Happy Ending. I just want everything to be like a Barbie movie and it works out perfectly. I didn't like the craft's ending because Nancy, Rochelle and Bonnie Deserved better. Like they didn't even do anything wrong, they were no where too taken over by power.. In this power point I will explain how Sarah was the actual problem.

I collect dolls and I sew. the amount of clothes I've taken apart and sew into completely different things. I turned a long sleeve top into a spaghetti strap top and im really proud of it. I just never wear long sleeve tops unless its off the shoulder and cause it had a velvet cheetah print heart that said Bratz and cheetah print neckline I couldn't so I changed it and was able to keep the neckline intact also had to take it in cause it was pretty big in the waist.

Do you have any pets??

Yes, I have a sister. She's a good pet and I love her.

What sports do you/have you played??

I was a cheerleader and also did dance through middle and high school. Random story no one asked for I only learned to do a split out of spite because the head cheerleader while the coach was out went down the line to ask who could do a split and skipped me cause I was the biggest cheerleader. But I am unnecessarily flexible so every night I practiced doing a split and it took me like a week to do it. And I heard some of the other cheerleaders say I was only on the team to be a base. First of all I was the only bitch there with rhythm and who was good a choreography because I was also in dance. Like Just because I'm fat it doesn't mean anything. One thing about me, being fat has never stopped me from doing anything. The way other people treated me for being fat hurt as a child and was the sole reason I fell into depression and self harm. But I stopped caring what other people think a long time ago, like fuck everyone who has a problem with fat people that has nothing to with us. Their just fucking little bitches. I may have went on a tangent there.

Legally 5'7 but I can't accept it so in my mind 5'8. Yes, an inch matters, my whole life was a lie.

What was your favorite subject in school??

Art and Dance, in 12th grade I had like almost all electives beside English and math and I didn't have PE! Like it was the best thing ever.

See You In Hell, Bratz Passion 4 Fashion: Diamondz!

Contrary to the opinions of many of my peers, I think weeding is awesome and I love it. There’s little I find more satisfying than an item of obviously low quality with no demand whatsoever coming into my attention and having the privilege of removing it from circulation.

Just to be entirely clear, we’re not talking about “extreme” or “controversial” content. I’ve had that conversation done to death a thousand classroom-polarizing times before. We’re talking about cheap. We’re talking about cash-grab. We’re talking about no artistic, cultural, spiritual, or even material value.

We’re talking about Bratz Passion 4 Fashion; Diamondz.

Some personal history first: I’m old enough that my last big toy phase before I reached the special level of adolescence where you have to openly condemn everything you once held dear as a child was Bionicles. I had the black bionicle from every generation up until that point, as well as a complete set of those little rolly-polly guys with the stretchy necks. I don’t know what they were called and I couldn’t be bothered to look it up for this lil micro-essay here.

What’s important is that they were cool. They did action-y stuff, I felt smart putting them together.

Waaaay Cooler, Smarter, Action-y, and REAL than my sister’s interests! Polly Pocket? Dumb! Pre-bronification MLP? Barf! Bratz? How fake can you get? Those were just shallow pieces of plastic made by toy companies. Not like my precious bionicles. So cool. So adult. So smart.

Then I watched the first Bionicle movie when it was on TV and realized I too was a cog in an elaborate toy commercial scheme. Something clicked in my horny mushy pre-teen brain, and I put away all my old favorite toys forever. It was now time to be shitty and elitist about intangible concepts instead, a hobby I’d keep until my early 20′s. But in addition to a change in hobbies, I also started to be a little bit less shit to my sister about her toys.

This confession out of the way, I don’t think my sister would have stopped me from throwing this DVD directly into the trash. My sister didn’t become a high-fallutin’ working-class intelligentsia asshole like her big brother, and we have nothing comparable in terms of media taste, but I think she would support me 100% if I told her I sent this DVD straight to hell. In fact I might call her later just to confirm. This disk was bad, is the moral of my story.

It took six paragraphs, but let’s talk about Day 3 on the job!

It was just me and Lisa today. I’ve upgraded from liking Lisa to absolutely loving working with Lisa. We talked everything from how her kids are doing to politics (she brought up Tr#mps latest satire-destroying phone call) to video-gaming to the history of animation. I genuinely like talking to her and it’s a shame she’s just filling in. If a job opens up at her branch, I’d apply for it, no question.

My boss Wallace, “Yer dad”-level queerphobe and Ron Swanson-esque libertarian, was putting out a metaphorical fire at another branch and I didn’t have to deal with him at all.

I did my opening routine. Checking the drop box, collecting the pull list, putting together holds, refiling returned materials, preparing ILL material, checking my work email, and the like. I was done with it all in about 90 minutes, with 4 hours left to go on my shift.

Wallace had told me to fill the time with anything I can qualify as “professional development” the week before, so I spent some time reading articles on the ALA website and googling “anarcho-librarianism” just to see what would happen. I found an abandoned blog and a twitter.

Then I remembered oh shit. I have to make a twitter don’t I

I don’t like twitter. I’ve tried to use it. I don’t get it. I’m too old to learn a new app. It’s impossible.

And yet I must. That’s where The Discourse is happening. That’s where the minds in my field are saying things. If I’m taking my career seriously, if I want to get a grip on the currents in my profession, I have to bite that checkmarked bullet. Stand by for updates on my professional twitter.

I got bored of being on the ALA site and ran out of productive things to google, and decided to look around the building for abandoned projects and mysteries to solve. It didn’t take long to find one, when I found a cart in the work room with a pile of DVDs in paper sleeves.

“Scratched” a post-it note on top said.

I asked Lisa if she knew how long these had been here, and she confirmed that they were in fact a hold-over from the previous staff that had left in a mass exodus some months before.

Well cool, I thought. I’ll see if these are too fucked up to play.

Commence with an hour of consuming children’s media, a few seconds of a minute at a time. I was fortunate that the work computers both had CD drives AND VLC media player! Thank you, past cool supervisor who put VLC on the work machines! Good call!

So I “watched” a few Dora The Explorers, a Care Bears film, that Trolls movie, Hotel Transylvania, and a Barbie horse adventure film, watching a few seconds before skipping a minute ahead to see if it would choke and skip.

See here’s the thing about scratched CDs. They’re weird. You can have a CD that’s fucked up completely (looking at you, my copy of Rollercoaster Tycoon 1) that still somehow plays fine like it just came out of the box. Sometimes scratches will seem totally superficial but goof up just enough microscopic binary that no machine will touch it. All these DVDs were ugly as sin, but that didn’t mean they were broken did it?

And it turns out a lot of them worked fine. That’s how I ended up watching Bratz Passion 4 Fashion: Diamondz which, unfortunately, played fine.

As I put the disk into the drive I remembered my sister’s participation in the Bratz toy craze. As an adult, a real one not the one I told myself I was at 13, I told myself that I might have a bias against this content, to just check the disk and not get judgy about what might be a kids favorite movie.

I uh... I failed to do that. BUT IT’S OK BECAUSE MY BIAS IS TOTALLY JUSTIFIED AND MY JUSTIFICATION IS RIGHT HERE

If you didn’t or don’t want to click the link, it’s a scene where the Bratz Diamonds are about to head out on some sort of fashion trucking marathon/race. Like any proper racer, the blonde at the wheel has a white-knuckle grip on the wheel, has just put their rig in gear, and in proper high-octane fashion, puts on a knowing smirk.

Except the smirk is, well... the animators just stretched the lips across the face further. I can’t do it justice, you just have to watch it, but I’ve done better animating just by pan-and-scanning around Windows Movie Maker.

This... isn’t content anybody needs. But I’m a librarian. I’m sworn to access. So the question becomes, does anyone want it?

I had to know, I had to know, how much circulation has this gotten? When was the last time this disk was in the hands of anybody at all besides me?

I popped it into Evergreen and behold: 15 check-outs since 2006 when it was released. No checkouts in the last 2 years.

I asked Lisa the proper procedure for removing something from the catalog, and in only a moment the deed was done. The case was repurposed, the disk trashed, the DVD cover recycled. It was time to go. I’d spent my remaining hours quasi-consuming children’s media.

I placed most of what I’d watched in a new pile, which I labeled “SCRATCHED BUT WORK FINE.” I placed one lone Barbie horse movie in a different pile labeled “SCRATCHED AND DOES NOT WORK.”

I felt like I’d accomplished something. I turned off the lights and I went home.

Glow-in-the-dark sausage party?

St. Patrick’s day isn’t usually very visible in Finland, unless you want to go to an Irish pub during this time of year, and if it wasn’t for GMM and all the baking accounts I follow on Instagram, I wouldn’t know what’s up. But, I’ve been expecting to see Chase dressed up as a leprechaun, talking in his brilliant Irish accent...well, since last year, to be honest. I admit, I’m not an expert in English dialects, but I think he’s doing a great job. And most certainly, a better job than either Rhett or Link. But Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone! Now, let’s turn things green and glowy!

This year, GMM’s St. Patrick’s Day is a bit more subtle shade of green than in the previous years, as the guys return to their “Shelf Where They Leave Things On”, and see, what happens to things when left in glow stick fluid for a month.

I have an opinion on Bratz dolls which I decided not to say at this point, because they are dolls, and it would be absurd to have strong feelings about a doll. Let’s just say, if someone needs to have their face melt down in a jar of neon green fluid, it’s the doll, not the cute kitty. In fact, that cat is adorable, and I want one. Please don’t drown it in a jar of toxic fluids, please!

Oh crap, too late. The cat is definately lost. I should have known that it takes more than a soak in glow stick juices to remove a Bratz make-up. But seeing that cat...compared to how I felt seeing a Furby get decapitated, this is breaking my heart. Poor kitty.

I don’t have the slightest maternal instinct in my body, but I have to say, seeing Rhett lift that pig uterus with the tongs made my ovaries flinch. In my neverending thirst for knowledge, I decided to try to google what the interwebs say about pig uteruses (uteri?), and ended up finding a recipe for a uterus wok, some scientific articles about creating a pig-monkey hybrid, and a place that sells pig uterus by the pound. Big mistake on my part. I suggest you not google that. At this point, I’m as eager to get rid of the pig parts as the guys are. I don’t care who turned white. I think my face turned green. Which kinda fits the theme, I guess.

Not gonna lie, I love the writers at Mythical for coming up with the descriptions to all these games. In the round of grapes and eggs injected with glow stick fluid, they really went for it: “Which one will glow bright, like Link that one time he “accidentally” sat on a lava lamp.” Link’s face after he figures out what he just read is priceless. This might have changed the way he sees lava lamps for good.

I said this the last time, and I’m saying this now: Rhett feeding Link boiled eggs is not quite as delightful as Link feeding Rhett strawberries. I was very fond of the strawberries, and I personally think Link liked feeding them to Rhett, much more than he likes eating eggs fed to him. But enough about that. The glow-in-the-dark eggs were amazing. I wonder what would happen, if you gave them a vigorous shake?

Well, the guys officially lost the game at this point, and therefore have to spray some JLO Glow in the air as punishment, and to remove the stank of pig’s feet from the set.

In the final round, Leprechaun Chase appears, asking the guys a riddle: “I always have to work, with something in my eye. What am I?” Whoever guesses the right answer to this riddle, gets a special prize and the power of choice, when the guys must either squirt toothpaste or pour blood in to a jar with glow stick fluid, and supposedly, create a reaction.

I’m absolutely impressed with Chase’s accent. I didn’t read any of the comments on the video, but he nailed it, right? I actually recently listened to an audiobook which was based in Ireland, and as much as the reader tried, her accent was nowhere near as good as Chase’s.

Link guesses the right answer to the riddle (I did too, I’m so proud of myself!), and wins the power of choice. He chooses to pour blood in his jar, and there definately is an awesome reaction. Chase also has a special prize of...another bottle of Glow for him. I wonder if there was a 2-for-1 discount on them at Walmart.

In GMMore, the party and glow-in-the-dark them continue, when the guys try making balloon animals with glow-in-the-dark balloons. Rhett manages to create a somewhat animal-like thing he calls a monkey with a problem, and Link’s creation, according to him, is an ant-eater who is trying to copulate with some sort of a blue sausage accumulation - and once combined, the two creations turn into something Link refers to as a sausage party. Let’s hope these two aren’t invited to a kids birthday anytime soon.

STANDSTILL [Freak Week: DAY 3]

Shawn was a happy man. He’d successfully survived his 30′s, had a stable income, and a large, happy family. However, one day, he noticed something slightly out of place that would change his life forever.

— A/N: Here’s another sad one lol!! I wish I could say this is the last imagine with this concept im gonna write (this is #3 lol) but i can’t promise anything. This imagine is based on a TRUE STORY(!) called Awoken By a Lamp, and it breaks my heart every time I read it, so naturally, I had to write about it. I hope you’re enjoying Freak Week thus far!

For once, all was still in the Mendes household.

The chirping of crickets and the rustling of sheets was all to be heard, everyone fast asleep. Shawn's arm subconsciously dragged his wife closer to his body as they slept and she responded, pushing herself further back into his embrace.

Nights like these were the parents' favorites as they were hard to come by what with their two children, but they didn't happen often, and when they did, they were almost always short-lived.

That night was no different.

"Daddy?"

Shawn's eyes instinctively shot open at the sound of his three year old's voice at the side of the bed, his body forcing itself to sit up despite his exhaustion. He rubbed his eyes at peered down at the little girl who was hugging herself through her t-shirt, her big eyes staring up at him.

"Yeah, Mia? What is it?" He grumbled lowly, his words coming out meaner than he wanted them to. He compensated for this by leaning down and scooping Mia up into his arms, holding her tightly against him.

"Liam keeps making noises, I can hear them. I can't sleep." She mumbled tiredly, her pout far too cute to ignore.

Shawn sighed heavily, looking back at Y/N who was still fast asleep. He allowed himself to grin the tiniest bit at this fact and cleared his throat, standing up from the bed and propping Mia up onto his hip.

"Alright, let's go, kid." He whispered, taking quiet steps out of the room and down the hall to Mia's, which was adjacent to Liam's. Shawn set Mia down on her big girl bed as she liked to call it, pulled the covers over her body, and leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead.

"I'll take care of Liam." He promised, granting Mia a warm smile. "Sleep tight, hun, you have school tomorrow."

Mia responded in her normal soft-spoken manner with a small "Okay", smiling as she flipped over in her bed to face the wall. Shawn then stood and walked out of the room, taking one last look at her before partially shutting her door. Then, he was off to his son's room.

The door was wide open and as soon as he entered he could see the little boy sitting in the corner of his crib, hand in his mouth as he babbled nonsense. Liam's eyes were automatically drawn to Shawn as he approached, his big arms reaching towards the boy and pulling him out.

"Oookay, so why are you awake, little man?" Shawn grumbled, taking a seat on the armchair in the corner of the room. And as he looked down at his one-year-old for the millionth time, his heart burst with love just as it always did. He loved his daughter just the same, but with Liam, there was a certain special bond there that he felt every time he held him. Of course, Mia was more of a momma's girl.

Liam only knew a few simple words at this point, so naturally, he said nothing; just continued to make random, pointless noises that somehow resonated deeply within Shawn. He bit his lip as he continued to stare at his son, his look of concern dissipating into that of a grin.

"You just wanted to get my attention, huh?" Shawn teased, slender fingers going to tickle Liam's stomach. The small boy erupted in a fit of giggles, eventually getting to be too loud, so Shawn held a finger to his lips, making that shushing noise Liam always seemed to be fascinated by. "Shh, you don't want to wake up mommy, do you?"

As if the boy actually understood Shawn he stopped making noise, settling for a measly yawn that shook his entire body. Shawn laughed at this and rolled his eyes- Kids are always tired but never want to sleep, he thought, standing and going to set Liam back in the crib.

"Go to sleep, for me, alright?" Shawn uttered, rubbing Liam's belly gently. And just as his father had instructed, Liam's eyes closed slowly despite his efforts to keep them awake.

Shawn released a breath of relief knowing that, once again, all was still in the Mendes household; he just hoped it would stay that way through the night.

He flopped down into his own bed and returned to his former position, draping his arm over his wife and pulling her flush against himself once more, knowing that in the morning, everything would be just as hectic as usual.

"Shawn, where's Mia's book bag?" Y/N asked, making quick work of throwing the girl's lunch together. Shawn's eyes went wide and he paused, toothbrush sticking out of his mouth as he went searching around the house for the Bratz bag that he was swore he saw in the living room. Liam sat in his high-chair, laughing at the scene of his dad running like a madman.

Eventually the bag was found underneath Mia's bed and Shawn rushed back out to the living room where he found the door wide open, Y/N helping Mia into her car seat in the driveway. He rushed forwards and once Y/N was sure she was strapped in Shawn placed the bag into Mia's lap, leaning down to place a kiss to her forehead.

"Have a great day at school, honey, I love you."

"I love you tew!" Mia geeked, her legs swinging back and forth excitedly, ready to get back to her pre-school friends.

Y/N shut the backseat door and walked up to Shawn, placing her hands on his shoulders and leaning up to give him a peck on his lips, "I'll see you later, babe. I'm going to the store later, you need anything?"

Shawn hummed to say no, bringing a hand down to her butt to give it a gentle squeeze. Y/N rolled her eyes and gave him one last peck before jumping into the driver's seat, waving as she pulled off.

Then, it was just Shawn and Liam.

First thing on the long to-do list was to let Liam out of his high-chair and keep him entertained whilst he cleaned the house. Shawn did just that, putting on some stupid kids' show and setting Liam down in his playpen while he ran to the closet to grab the vacuum cleaner.

Liam stayed unbothered whilst Shawn vacuumed the entire downstairs area, only getting fussy when Shawn reached the living room, the loud noise distracting him from the show.

"I know, I know, bud." Shawn sighed, wrapping his hand around the cord and continuing to run the machine over the hardwood floors. "Just a little bit more, and I'll be done."

He was done within the next five minutes which Liam was surely happy about, eyes trained on the screen once again. Shawn chuckled and returned the vacuum to the closet, grabbing the duster next. Naturally, he began to wipe down every surface, carefully stepping around the playpen when he dusted off the T.V. stand and came to the table in the corner of the room.

He raised his arm to dust, but something caught his attention.

The lamp.

Something was off about the lamp, and he couldn't put his finger on it. It was in 3D, of course, yet if he were to turn his head a certain way, it seemed to stretch. He raised his arm again to dust the object and did so with ease, but something about the lamp captivated him; fascinated him.

He wasn't sure why, but his body ran on auto-pilot, sitting his body down on the couch as his eyes stayed glued to the lamp. The obnoxious noise coming from the T.V. show drowned out, replaced by pure white noise.

This went on for what Shawn presumed to be a few more minutes before Y/N was making her way through the door again, struggling to hold all of the groceries she'd brought in. She set them all on the kitchen island and walked into the living room, anger evident on her face.

"Shawn, what the hell are you doing?" She barked, leaning down to grab Liam whose face was streaked with tears. Her voice seemed to galvanize Shawn and he snapped his eyes upwards, realization overcoming him as she continued, "I called you like ten times, I had to carry everything myself."

"I-I'm sorry, I just.. Spaced out." He shook his head, glancing back at the lamp. However, when he heard Mia's boisterous voice coming down the hallway, the confusion began to settle in. "Wait, what time is it?"

"It's 3:30?" Y/N gave him an odd look from the kitchen, laying some animal crackers down on the high-chair tray for Liam. "Dinner will be ready soon; Oh, can you set the table, please?"

3:30? Shawn pondered to himself, eyebrows furrowing ever so deeply, it was 10:00 in the morning when I'd started looking, there's no way I've been staring at it for so long. Right?

"Y-Yeah." Shawn agreed, rubbing the back of his neck and going to get the plates and utensils. "Sure."

As the family sat at the dinner table and Mia went on about her day at pre-school, Shawn's focus was elsewhere. Thanks to the open floor plan, he had a front row seat to the living room; more over, that damn lamp.

It still fascinated him for reasons he couldn't explain. Something wasn't right with it, and Y/N definitely noticed his strange staring, but she let it go, not willing to cause a scene at the table in front of the kids.

At night when it was time to wrap up, Y/N did all of the heavy-lifting of getting the kids to bed while Shawn slumped into the couch once again, nibbling on his nail as he tried over and over again to figure out why the object looked so strange. His hand came up to scratch at the balding spot on top of his head, unmoving when he heard Y/N's footsteps getting closer, concern evident in her quietness.

"Shawn." She simply stated, "Why are you acting so weird today? You need to come to bed, baby."

"I will." Shawn replied, nodding slowly, not even bothering to take his gaze off the lamp to look at his wife. "I will, I just need some time to myself right now. Have a good night sleep."

"Hard to do that when you're not next to me."

Shawn said nothing to this, making Y/N huff angrily and stomp off. She'd had enough of his strange behavior and this was clear as she slammed her door, not loud enough to wake the kids, but certainly loud enough for Shawn to get the message.

The lamp was intoxicating; Addicting, even. Every time he found himself studying the strange shape, he memorized its ridges and curves and tiniest details.

God, what was wrong with it?

In the morning, Y/N found Shawn right where she'd left him. His eyes hosted dark circles underneath and his fingers twitched in agony, his body fighting to keep his eyes open. She huffed out, and now, there was no denying that there was something seriously wrong.

She'd called his name, she tapped him, she'd even resorted to slapping him, but not once did he remove his eyes from the lamp. Not once did he speak, and not once did he so much as blink.

And the next morning, when she was sure that there was no helping Shawn despite all of her efforts, Y/N piled her kids into the truck and brought them to their grandparent's home.

Even through all of this, Shawn didn't move. For once, during the daytime, the house was completely silent and lifeless, the only sound to be heard being his shallow breathing.

The lamp.

And suddenly, finally, it clicked.

The lamp wasn't real. None of it was real.

At this epiphany, the lamp began to shift even more. It seemed to grow, expanding until it took up Shawn's entire vision, and then, everything went red.

He couldn't see, but he could hear, and the sounds of shouting all around him scared him to no end. The voices sounded panicked and he could feel hands encompassing his very being, grabbing at him from every angle. He couldn't move, couldn't make out anything, stuck in the weird state of wherever this was.

And, when his vision returned to normal, he was hit with an immense amount of pain shooting through his entire body. People were crowded around him, concern evident on everyone's faces as they helped Shawn sit up, the boy only then noticing the amount of blood gushing from somewhere on his face.

It covered his clothes and his skin and the hot pavement below him as he looked around at the street he was suddenly next to, seeing a large, buff man being pulled away by police. Before Shawn even had the chance to ask what was happening, he was being grabbed at again and put onto a stretcher, the pounding in his head only growing by the second.

Eventually, he gave up trying to make sense of everything, eyes falling shut as the emotions overwhelmed him, his body falling limp, mind going blank, and vision going dark.

The ticking of the metronome on the coffee table caught Shawn's attention, his eyes following the pendulum as it rocked side to side in a calming manner. His limbs relaxed and he found it easier to breathe along with the constant sound, allowing his eyes to rest for a few seconds before his name was being called.

"Shawn?" The woman across from him asked gently so as not to frighten him, leaning backwards in her seat and getting her clipboard ready. "How are you feeling today?"

The man bit his lip and laughed bitterly at the question. "What do you think?"

She was tempted to reply but could tell there was something at the tip of his tongue, so she remained silent, allowing him to speak when ready.

"I um.. I saw Liam last night." Shawn sniffed, looking up at the ceiling and stifling his incoming tears. "I was watching T.V., and I saw him in his little playpen out of the corner of my eye. When I looked, he was gone, and I just.. Broke down. I know it's stupid, I know none of it was real, but.."

"It's not stupid, Shawn." His therapist assured him, leaning forward and giving him a stern yet strangely comforting glare. "You lived out an entirely different life for 10 years in your mind in a matter of seconds; Surely that has to be overwhelming. You're grieving the loss of your family, and nobody understands this, because nobody knew them like you did."

Shawn gulped down the lump in his throat, and even after nearly a year now of hearing practically the same thing every session, he was always surprised by her ability to understand him. He nodded slowly and brought his eyes back down to meet her gaze as he spoke softly, "Sometimes I wish the asshole that knocked me out would have just finished me off."

"Why is that?"

Shawn became tight-lipped and his fingers began to tap relentlessly against the leather chair's arms; an action that'd become his new coping mechanism. "Because then, I wouldn't have to go through all of this. If he just killed me then and there, I wouldn't always be thinking about some family who never even fucking existed. 10 years, 10 fucking years-”

He choked on his words, letting out a sort of grunt and shutting his eyes tightly. Even after so much time had passed, he still found it hard to admit these things to himself. He suffered grief like none other all because of an asshole on the street and a nearly fatal head injury, and he would never forgive the man that had done this to him.

"..You always mention that you see your son sometimes." The woman asked, her own nose beginning to sting with the promise of tears. "Do you ever see your wife? Your daughter?"

Shawn wiped his face free of tears and shook his head sadly, now staring down at his lap. "No, I don't. Sometimes before I go to sleep I pray that I'll get to see them again in my dreams, just one last time. Just to see Y/N laugh again, or to spoon her while we sleep, or to even hear her complain about the smallest things again. And I want to help Mia get ready for school again, even though I almost always messed something up. My girls."

The room was silent for a long while before a ringing echoed throughout it, signifying the end of the session. At that, Shawn made it appoint to grab a handful of tissues and attempted to make himself look presentable once more, wiping himself down and tossing the remnants of his breakdown into the bin next to the door.

Before he could walk out without saying anything further, his therapist's voice caused him to still, hand on the knob as he listened intently.

"Shawn?" She muttered, giving him a curt nod. "I'm proud of you. You're making great progress."

Shawn only sniffed and gave her a small grin, not truly absorbing the words before he walked out of the office and out of the building.

He finally felt as if he could breathe again, the fresh air hitting his lungs and calming him down. Out of all of the sessions he'd had over the last months, this one proved to be one of the most difficult.

He ducked into his car and tapped his steering wheel, sucking on his teeth before letting down the sun visor down and looking at himself in the mirror.

Along the right side of his head was the scar that had started it all and that would follow him for the rest of his life. He frowned at this but chose to let go just this once, examining the rest of his features.

No matter how many times he looked at himself like this, it was always weird seeing himself so young again. He was used to seeing his nearly 40-year-old face dead tired with the wrinkles settled deeply into his skin, but 20 year old Shawn could still pass for a teenager.

This made him chuckle to himself. I'm so stupid, he thought for no reason in particular, letting up the visor and sticking his key into the ignition. The car revved for a few seconds before starting up and he sighed deeply, nibbling on his bottom lip.

On days like this, he didn't want to be bothered with anyone or anything, but he knew that he had to get out of the depression he'd been in for so long. And if there was one thing that kept him going, it was this:

His family would want him to rebuild his life. They would want him to live again, to be happy, so he would. Eventually.

This was all the fuel he needed to move his hand to the gear shift, taking one last glance at the therapist office.

Until next time, he thought, pulling away from the building and riding off.

A/N: So as I mentioned before, this is a true story, and I encourage you to look into it if it interested you. The story is called Awoken by a lamp, and this is something that people actually experience wherein if someone experiences a life-threatening situation, their brain might go into “override mode” for lack of better wording, and create something entirely new. 31 Day Character Development Writing Challenge

(days 11- 31)

DAY 11: When does your celebrity feel their best? Are they the type that does best with time off, hanging out at home with the family or the dog on the couch, or do they find themselves feeling the most at ease while working?

She feels her best when enjoying some time off to work on herself. This is typically during hiatus for her, where she can start off her day feeling like a badass post workout, hang at the beach with her girls, then be lazy for the rest of the day on the couch with Kleo and a bag of chips. Everybody needs time to just chill out, and it’s a time for her to be her best self that doesn’t involve waking up at 5am for hair and makeup as most other times in her life.

DAY 12: Why did your celebrity choose the house that they’re currently living in? Was there something that drew them to the space, or a price point that it fell under, or some special reason that they decided to take the plunge?

Janel loves any excuse to be near the water, so settling over in the Retreats was a natural choice especially in comparison to the home she was just moving out of blocks from the beach. She’s used to a smaller, simpler living. It was a perfect compromise considering other options she’d seen in town.

DAY 13: Describe the contents of your celebrity’s night stand. Is it full of naughty secrets? Do they keep precious family mementos? What about the surface, do they have things thrown about, is it organized?

Her night stand is fairly organized, though she does tend to collect things like water bottles on top. Inside of the drawer is mostly miscellaneous things like packs of tissues and a handy bottle of painkillers. Books occasionally make their way on and off of the table, as now most reading she does isn’t from from a physical book. Always found are always pens, pencils, and highlighters as well as she tends to read her scripts while in bed. Anything else, might need to be cleaned out but it isn’t messy by any means.

DAY 14: Winter can be a bit dark and bleak, and sometimes that leads to down days. How does your celebrity handle those? Is there someone they talk to, something they do to feel better, or do they end up keeping it to themselves and dwelling?

Janel talks to her mom and sister every day, even if for just a few minutes. If she needs to talk to anyone, they are her go-to. However, as someone who is prone to feeling everything hard, if she can’t talk things out with family she immediately turns to locking herself in her music room to write. Writing and the occasional composition is her personal form of therapy. If she didn’t write, she’d end up keeping it in until she blew up, so in order to avoid that music and wine is her go-to to feeling better. Maybe even a good cry.

DAY 15: What kind of lover is your celebrity? Are they the sweet, giving kind or more in it for themselves; openly affectionate in public or more reserved?

Janel falls fast and loves hard. She’s always one to sacrifice for love, or what she thinks is love, even work. Her priority is typically her man, though at the end of the day even without her realizing it, her relationships often suffer because she has difficulty waiting to jump into the next. Affectionate does not begin to describe her. She wants everyone to know who her boo is, constantly posting pictures, without any ability to keep her hands.. or mouth to herself. She is always one to start throwing around “I love you” quicker than most would think appropriate but at the end of the day, she can’t help it when she feels she’s in love.

DAY 16: The world stops on a certain day of the year, and stays that way forever – what day would your celebrity choose to stop the clocks on? (Month and day.)

Any of the last few times she’d been reunited with her entire family, particularly her grandparents. Since her grandfather’s alzheimers diagnosis, it’s been tough on the family not being able to get together often to see him. So, maybe her sister’s wedding being the last time everyone was together.

DAY 17: How does your celebrity handle being sick or hurt? Are they the type of person to obey the doctor’s orders and stay in bed? Or are they the kind that’s up and doing things far before they should?

Being sick and being injured are two completely different stories for Janel. If she is sick, she will refuse to see a doctor and revert back to being a needy child. Sick days require home remedies, soup, and cuddling with either another human or Kleo or her stuffed bear. Maybe even all three. Being injured however, she’ll keep quiet for as long as possible. With a pretty high pain tolerence, it takes quite a lot of pain for her to cry. If she’s in enough pain to shed tears, she knows it’s serious enough to get professionally checked out. And although she does her best to follow doctors orders, she may decide to ignore them if they interfere with work.

DAY 18: Pick three things that your celebrity owns or possesses that are important to them, and explain why they care about them so much. Please exclude animals or people!

Her final wrap gifts from Liars, the ring and jacket, in remembrance of a chapter as a family for the group who survived seven years together creating something they’re truly proud of. She also has priceless jewelry given to her by her grandmother back home which is important for that very reason.

DAY 19: Does your celebrity have a lot of friends, or do they tend to rely on a smaller group of friends?

Janel truthfully has a small circle that are her true friends, but often times calls acquaintances her friends, and her friends her best friends. She has a specific handful who have stuck with her through thick and thin who were truly her best friends and those she has made more recently who are on their way to join that position in her life.

DAY 20: What’s your celebrity’s relationship history like? A lot of hook-ups, many long-term relationships? Have they ever gotten very serious with someone before?

Back to back long term relationships over the past decade, with the occasional fling in between. She is a serial monogamist who does not know how to be single for very long. Most of these men are people she has worked with, at one time or another. However, her two most publicly speculated relationships are both unconfirmed flings that she refuses to speak on as they occurred back to back and interfered with her job. Of all of these relationships, only one has ended close to marriage.

DAY 21: Travel time! Where in the world would your celebrity like to go if they were given the opportunity to take an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere in the entire world? The catch is… it’s a solo trip that they’re taking alone.

Anywhere where she can drink from sun up to sun down while lying out on the beach. It might be nice to visit Turks and Caicos again, as last time she took her sister she had purely jumped at the opportunity as a means to get the hell out of LA and away from the drama overwhelming her life at the time. So, it would be nice to return to what was one of her favorite vacation spots, without having to feel doomed about returning home.

DAY 22: Whether they’re into acting, music, a sport… what has been the project that your celebrity is the most proud of?

Her two biggest projects thus far. Liars established her career as a real actress and taught her about the business. It’s given her career the opportunity to expand in ways she never even considered, all stemming from the show. Luckily, the spin off gives her a chance to continue that journey and testing her limits in acting. Of everything else she’s done over the years, Dancing had the most impact on her personally. The journey challenged her not only physically but emotionally and mentally to a degree she never expected, and it was all worth it for the experience in the end. She grew up a lot in the aftermath as well. Both shows shaped an extensive part of her life from which she grew up, and looking back, is the proudest accomplishments of her career.

DAY 23: And on the opposite side of the spectrum, is there a project that your celebrity has worked on that they absolutely regret, for one reason or another?

She doesn’t regret any projects because they have all taught her about life and led her to where she is now. But let’s be real, Bratz is a little embarrassing to watch back. It was her first major film, and it bombed, and watching back is cringe-worthy. However, it gave her her best friends to this day and taught her lessons she needed before reaching the level she would a few short years later.

DAY 24: How does your celebrity handle the holiday season? Are they the kind that’s very excited and upbeat? Do they tend to get somber around the holidays? Are they religious at all, or more in it for the traditions they create on their own?

Christmas is her favorite time of year. Christmas music makes her happy to the point she’ll be told to shut up several times throughout the month. The holidays always come up far to quick, in her opinion, and leave even quicker. She didn’t grow up particularly religious but her family does celebrate Christmas with early morning presents and brunch. Typically, because her extended family is so far away, it’s a quiet and comfortable day spent relaxing and enjoying family time.

DAY 25: What is your celebrity’s Christmas (or other/no holiday, if they don’t celebrate) routine like? Do they travel out of town, have family over? Wake up early, or take advantage of the holiday and sleep in? What do they do with the day? How has it changed since they were younger and at home?

Most years, her sister flies in and they both spend it with their parents and dogs. By that point, Janel has typically moved back in with her parents for a few days already, staying with them upwards of a week beforehand and a few days after. Christmas day is typically an early morning, breakfast mimosas and presents type of deal. A games of Chinese checkers while laying on the living room floor leads to Janel’s solo tradition of watching RENT or the Sound of Music or any other musical she’s deemed Christmas appropriate while her folks rest. The day is just to relax and enjoy family time, typically ending with some wine and a book in hand to end the night. Back in Hawai'i, it would be a day spent at grandmas with the whole family and Janel was the one singing for the family after presents. Since moving to LA, it’s been her and her parents and sister. That list now includes her brother in law and the family dogs.

DAY 26: When the holidays end, is your celebrity the type that wants to undecorate and move on immediately to get back to normal, or do they keep things up and keep the spirit going longer?

Janel is lazy and will keep things up until her mom comes over to help take everything down. She loves Christmas and wishes it lasted longer, so as long as the decor is socially acceptable is good with her. New Years is often time the cut off for her to bring everything down.

DAY 27: Is your celebrity more of a city-dweller, or a farm person? Do you think that where they grew up had a big impact on that? And how do they do when they’re living in the opposite situation?

She refuses to live downtown, the suburbs are more her scene. Growing up in Honolulu, she enjoyed her time when the family lived a ways away toward the mountains and spent her days on the beach. The house she owns in LA is a relatively small home in quiet neighborhood in North Hollywood. She was previously living in Long Beach, blocks away from a small beach. Now she’s out by the water yet again in town. If she were to go back to living in a place like DTLA she would probably rip her hair out, it’s too much. Living out far in farm country also may not work, she relies too much on food delivery.

DAY 28: Growing up, was there one person that your celebrity looked up to more than any other, whether it be family, friend, or just someone else in their life? How do they feel about that person today?

Her mom, older sister, actresses like Lucy Liu and Ming Na Wen or Lea Salonga, and as she got older her cousin actress Kelly Hu when she began making it big. Each woman had a big impact on her life in different ways, mostly teaching her to believe in herself and that she was capable of anything no matter who she was, where she came from, or how she looked.

DAY 29: Imagine if your celebrity had never come to Bayview… where would they be right this moment? Who would they be with, and what would they be doing?

She would still be in Toronto working, but in her previous relationship heading for the alter. Without Bayview, she’d be caught up in work to distract from everything else happening in life, and balancing that with wedding planning instead and in need of some time off. However, work prospects would still be the same, as she signed on for them over a year ago.

DAY 30: It’s the year 2022, and your celebrity is still living in Bayview. Describe what you think their life is going to be like in five years; are they still in the same house, doing the same work? With the same person and social circle? Or has their life changed astronomically? Do you think the reality of where they are is where they would have wanted to be back in 2017?

Probably in a bigger place in the suburbs, married, maybe have a kid but she’s still got plenty of time. All her time is spent between town and on location filming, her music career has also taken off. The same consistent people around her keeping her grounded. It’s a good life. Life has started to fall together, so the next five years are expected to continue the trend.

DAY 31: If there was one wish that your celebrity could have come true for the upcoming year, what would it be and why?

To finally settle down and be happy, while work continues to be steady. So in other words, to be living comfortably. Other years have not been so nice. It would also be nice to get a little more credit and recognition for her work, which oftentimes goes unnoticed.
