audrey howard.    twenty nine years old.   only child ,   but has a very large extended family and relatively successful cousins to live up to.   has a tense relationship with her parents that is getting better.   struggles with substance abuse and eventually commits to getting clean after many failed attempts.   she meets chris while waitressing an event for the abby foundation.   the relationship starts off from a very honest ,   vulnerable place ,   but it doesn’t stay that way.    they’re not as good for each other as they thought.   they can never seem to be on the same page.    details under the cut. 

chris is honest with audrey about his drinking problem ,    and a month later ,    she’s honest with him about her drug habit.     it makes her want to quit using ,    this thing that they have ,    his honesty ,    his discipline.    and she does quit ,   for a while.    but it’s not that easy.    he tries to help her ,    all the while telling her that he can’t ,    not in the way that she really needs ,    so she tells him that he doesn’t have to.    she’s got it under control.    she won’t let something like that ruin this.    she promises. 

she helps him open up about a lot of things that she can tell he’s never talked to anyone before ,    not like this ,   and he presents her with challenges that no one else ever thought she could rise to.   it’s amazing how much he believed in her.    she doesn’t believe it ,   most of the time ,    and it makes her insecure.    but god ,   she wants to.    

he convinces her go back to school.    she studies for exams on one side of the bed while he writes emails on the other ,    and he quizzes her when she asks.    she thinks he likes to.   he works a lot ,   more than she thinks he even has to ,    and she hates that ,    but she likes the way he makes up all those missed dinner dates to her.    he’s more thoughtful than he pretends to be.    she likes being able to make him sway with her in the kitchen to her carole king cd.     she likes it when she can give him little pep talks to brave his testosterone shots every week ,    and being able to make him laugh.   especially after he says ,   my mother always told me the secret was never to settle for someone who can’t make you laugh.

audrey thinks they’ll be getting married ,   soon.    it’s only been a little over a year ,    but what a year it’s been.   after hale’s final term ,    she wants them to get a brownstone in new york ,    because chris loves new york ,    and she loves the idea of sneaking lipstick stains onto his collar before they head off to take the kids to school together.    which ,    they’ll have two of.    a boy and a girl ,   in that order.    she wants a nine to five.   something reliable ,    something she’s good at ,    something she never could’ve had until chris stepped into her life and everything became so perfectly clear.    so picturesque. 

she wants new york.    she wants that brownstone.    but chris is stubborn ,   and uncomfortable with how quickly things are moving ,   sometimes ,    and how he’s somehow always on a pedestal but always doing something wrong.    and suddenly she’s feels trapped at an impasse with a man who won’t even say the words i love you every time she knows he wants to.   

she messes up.   she relapses ,    and it’s not the first time she’s done that since she promised she’d stop ,    but it’s the first time she has sex with her dealer ,   daniel ,    since chris admitted that he hadn’t slept with anyone else since they met.    there’s a voicemail on her phone that she doesn’t see.   chris comes home from the campaign trail a day earlier than he said he would ,    and she’s never seen him look so devastated when he opens the bedroom door.    she’s worried he broke his hand across daniel’s face ,    but he won’t let her look at it ,   he won’t let her touch him ,    but he won’t even look at her.   he won’t come home from the office.   the voicemail from him ,    when she listens to it later ,    says:   wish you’d talk to me.    we’re no good when we get like this ,    when you don’t talk to me.    i don’t know if you’re mad at me or mad at yourself ,    or whatever.    but i’m on my way home now ,    so if it’s something i did ,   then we can figure it out when i get there ,    okay?   i love you.   i’ll see you when i get home.

it doesn’t occur to her how badly she messed up until she wakes up and chris is leaning over her on daniel’s couch and she doesn’t know what day it is  (   hi ,   baby.    she says.   he doesn’t look happy to see her.   she’s not happy that he sees her like this.    they haven’t been happy in a while.    can we go home ,   now ?    i wanna go home.   )     because apparently ,    she’s moving out.    there’s an apartment he has set up for her.    first and last months paid.   security deposit ,    too.   better than the place she was living before she moved in with him ,    all she has to do is sign the paperwork.    there’s a clinic she can go to ,    he says ,    to get the kind of help that he said he couldn’t give her ,   the kind of help he told her she needed when he found out about her problem.     he won’t force her to go ,    though.    he won’t be able to because he won’t be there.    he doesn’t want to see her anymore ,   ever again.    

she puts up a fight.     she’s talked him down from this sort of thing before and if there was ever a time to try ,    it’s right now.    but he’s made up his mind.    he must think he’s too good for her ,    now ,    or something.     she says some things she shouldn’t have ,   but to be fair ,   so does he ,    and when she hit him in the face she really didn’t mean it.    maybe they could’ve sorted this out if she hadn’t hit him.   she’ll never know.    she was just done letting him make her feel bad for the way she’s forced to act just to get something from of him.    the neighbors are watching in the hallway as she kicks and punches at the front door after he slammed it in her face.    she’s tired of everyone leaving her ,   or throwing her away.    she never thought chris would do that even though he never said that he wouldn’t ,    not in those exact words.  audrey doesn’t move into the apartment he arranged for her.    she doesn’t even pick up the keys.    she tries to call him ,    but he won’t pick up the phone.   she tries to see him at his place ,    but he’s changed the locks.    the last time they ever speak a word to each other ,    he still won’t look at her directly in the eye.   she must have hurt him really bad.   no ,    she can tell she did ,    the bruise was still there.    it’s outside the white house where he threatens her with a restraining order.

she moves back in with her parents ,    a half hour out of the city ,    instead.    they’re disappointed.    they liked chris ,    even with him being the godless democrat that he was.    she’s honest with them for the first time in almost a decade ,    and so they’re disappointed in her ,   too.    then they’re there for her when she decides maybe she’ll go to that clinic after all.    it helps a lot more than she thought it would ,    and it’s hard to admit that.   it’s hard to admit to a lot of things to herself ,    but she does.    not immediately.     over time.   she does better in group therapy than she does in the one on one sessions ,    but her counselor isn’t a bad person ,   and by the time she’s out of the clinic she thinks she might want to be a counselor herself.    

it keeps her busy ,   and it keeps her straight ,    the work does.    sobriety sticks because this time she’s doing it for herself ,    so that she can help other people do it too ,    and she’s better at it than she ever thought she would be.     she’s sad that she couldn’t do it for her parents ,    or for chris ,    or for the ones that came before him ,    but she’s happy to be able to do it at all. 

she wants to tell him that when she notices him in a restaurant in columbia heights ,    three years since she got sober.   she should ,   she thinks ,    because he deserves to know that she got there and that he helped her do that and that she’s sorry ,    even if he wouldn’t be comfortable with her saying that out loud.    but he doesn’t see her across the room ,    and he doesn’t want to ,    and she respects that.     she knows how much he loves his grudges.   besides.    he’s with someone ,    and he looks happy ,   too.

CHARACTER DESIRED Aaron Khan DESCRIBE THE CHARACTER IN YOUR OWN WORDS If you told Aaron to turn out his pockets and show what he’s accomplished in life, you might see it as just empty hands, but to him, being a dealer is the only thing he’s ever been really good at. He’s got learning disabilities, dyslexia and ADHD, that prevented him from ever really settling into a normal life or doing well in school, but when it comes to weed, he’s a fucking prodigy. He can tell the weight of a bag just by looking at it or holding it, he can tell from the smell if product is good or not, and he knows how to spot an undercover cop at 100 yards. His greatest skill is in being able to read his customers. He can tell from the moment you approach him what strain you’re going to need, how much, and what you’re willing to pay. He’s friendly, never tries to force you to be his friend, and always stands by his product. If weed were legal, he might be paying taxes and living the good life at a cannabis dispensary. As it is, he’s the guy on everyone’s cell phone under “Aaron Green”. People usually assume when you say your home life was bad that someone was smacking you around or there was no food, maybe your parents were junkies or crackheads. But it doesn’t have to be that dramatic to be bad. Sometimes your family can just forget you exist. Aaron was one of eight kids and none of them ever really had a chance. He disappeared in among his siblings so that no one ever noticed when he never came home at night. His home was loud, but there was never any real love in it. His parents were immigrants who’d come to America as children and never gotten out of the ghetto neighbourhoods of Detroit. They never had enough money and worked all the time, and when they came home, they would just stare blankly at their children, as if to say, “are you still here?” Aaron doesn’t think they were ever even in love; certainly the photographs never show people who looked happy to be together. Sometimes he lets himself wonder if they were like him, with dreams that they could never achieve and a burning need to do something, and if they just got beaten down by life, but it’s not like he can ask anymore. Chicago was the farthest Aaron could get from Detroit on the money he’d saved up, and it seemed like a town that still had hope, while Detroit was just dying slowly around him. He had a cousin there whose couch he crashed on (Aaron has cousins everywhere, they come out of the woodwork whenever one of them needs somewhere to crash), and a few job possibilities lined up, but he’d get itchy if he got stuck working behind a counter or washing dishes or shifting mail around, needing more stimulation than entry-level jobs provided. If he’d had the money to do training in a trade or something, maybe he could’ve done something with his hands that kept him occupied, or trained to be a tech expert, since he loves video games and can play them for hours if need be. Instead, he asked his dealer if the guy could hook him up with a gig, and one thing led to another. Working for the Costellos is mildly terrifying at times, but it feeds that part of him that needs to move and stay active. He doesn’t deal anything too hard, just weed and some party drugs, and he’s a favourite of club kids and college students for the quality of his product and his innovations when it comes to packaging and branding. He’ll wake up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea about a new line of edibles like peppermint chocolates for the on-the-go buyer who doesn’t want to overindulge, or flavoured strains of CBD oil laced with hash to give a smooth high without any paranoia, or making their own line of e-liquids for vapes (something he’s very into, do not get him started on the unfair legislation around vaping rights), and spend the next three days making it happen only to crash once his latest masterpiece is complete. He could probably survive without a roommate at this point (though he’d have to live somewhere shady to do so and he’s become a little too comfortable to move back to the hood), but he used the excuse of needing one to let Corinna into his life. She’s the first person he’s lived with that he doesn’t feel anything but uncomplicated affection for, and the idea of having friends that you’re not either also selling to or working for is new and interesting for him. He’s a genuinely nice person (more so when baked but also overall), and he’s always happy to share his groceries or just sit up with her and listen to her talk. He may even someday tell her about his family, though that remains a subject he doesn’t address.   WRITING SAMPLE “Hey, man-bun!” Aaron turned around by reflex, even though someone yelling anything at you out of the blue was, at best, 50/50 gonna be a shitty situation. “That’s what your mom called me last night. At least I think that’s what she was saying, there was a lotta moaning going o-” Aaron didn’t get to finish his sentence, the punch catching him straight in the jaw. He looked like he could handle himself in a fight, but his muscles were all for show. Staggering back, he checked to see if all his teeth were still there. That was one thing that hadn’t gone wrong yet. “You sold me bad shit, motherfucker! Gimme my money back, or I’m gonna end you!” If this had been back in Detroit, Aaron might have taken this conversation more seriously, especially because he’d just gotten punched in the face, but this was Chicago, and he worked for the Costellos. Some little trust fund baby wasn’t gonna roll up on him and try and get a fucking refund. “That’s a shame. You still got the stuff? I’ll trade it in for new shit.” They were outside a bar in Costello territory, and the guy squaring up at him looked like he rowed every day and ate ivy for a living. Sure, he was dressed like he was living that thug life, but c'mon, no one’s teeth were that straight in Chiraq. That was the problem with cities like this, everyone thought they could front. Nobody in the suburbs would’ve even bothered, they’d have probably said please and thank you, but out here, people watched too many movies and thought you had to act like an OG. His friend, cuz of course he had a friend, punks like this never tried anything when it was a fair fight, just stood slightly off to the side and switched between grinning and sneering. “Are you fucking stupid? Did you hear me? Gimme my fucking money now! You’re lucky I don’t call my boys down and fuck your shit up for giving me lousy stuff!” It had gotten to the point where Aaron wasn’t really a street dealer primarily anymore, he was the guy you called when you needed something. He did deliveries and hung out at parties and clubs. When you were selling a product people wanted, you didn’t have to pound the pavement to sell it. But he was doing another favour for Holden. Aaron always did favours for Holden, no matter how many times the other man asked. He couldn’t help it. And normally he could spot an asshole a mile off and choose to refuse service, but Holden needed his quota to stay up, so Aaron had been a little too liberal with his sales tonight. Figures he’d get punched on his night off. “Like I said, I can do a trade if you’re unhappy with the product, but this isn’t a Target, man. We don’t do refunds. So hand over the shit, and I’ll give you some primo Afghani Kush. I’ll even top up the bag free of charge, cuz I wanna preserve our relationship.” The kid wasn’t having any of it. “I already smoked it and it did jackshit! I’m not even high! We even mixed it with some coke and it did fucking nothing!” Oh boy. So on top of assholes, they were idiots too. “You can’t mix it with coke, man. That just ruins both highs. If you’d said you’d wanted something to blend with uppers, I coulda-” Aaron was prevented in continuing with his sales pitch when the kid pulled out a gun. The fucking sikik seemed to think he could draw down in public. Granted, it was a shit neighbourhood, but it was still a Neighbourhood. “C'mon guy, this is a bad move. You really wanna think this one through, you know?” This whole evening was really turning into a bummer. If he got shot by this at hırsızı, he’d never live it down. And he didn’t have health insurance. The kid’s gun didn’t waver, and his friend had pulled a piece too. Awesome. “You coulda just given me the money, now I’m gonna take everything, and I’m gonna kick your ass too, you piece of shit fag-” The conversation ended abruptly with a squealing of tires and bright lights. Aaron jumped out of the way, rolling across the sidewalk and dragging himself up when there wasn’t immediate gunfire. The kid and his friend were now lying in the road groaning in front of a red Ford pickup. The door opened and Holden got out, looking at Aaron with bewilderment. “What the hell happened?” Stumbling forward, Aaron had the sense to kick the guns away from the two kids as he limped over to the truck’s passenger side. “Just a difference of opinion, don’t worry about it. But I’m thinking we talk about moving you to somewhere a little more high-class. This neighbourhood is going to shit.” As Holden slammed into the car and peeled away, the neighbourhood returned to normal, like it had never happened. It was Chicago, weirder things happened every day. Aaron leaned his head against the glass and dug a joint out of his pocket, inserting it between his lips and expertly lighting it with his lucky Zippo. “Don’t smoke that in the car, you’ll make it reek in here.” Laughing, Aaron rolled down the window. “You’re the weirdest dealer I know, man. C'mon, night’s still young, let’s hit Lake Forest and make some money off the preps out there.” Holden, shaking his head, took the turnoff and headed for the suburb. “You ever take anything seriously, cabron?” Aaron winked. “Not unless I can’t avoid it, kaşar.”

Walking out behind Bryce in the fitting room “is that a better size for him?” the store assistant asked, grabbing his arm so he can stand in front of the long mirror “yes it is, it fits better” crouching down to him “we finna get your haircut and then you going to look just as fly as me, you like this?” Bryce is a very shy kid, he walked into me hiding “I think it will be fine for him” my family decided to go and see family in Idaho, so they been staying there which is a blessing to me, it only leaves me and Josiah. But then that left Bryce with nowhere to go because Celine is a whore, I felt bad and said to Josiah we splitting duties. At the end of the day he’s my nephew and I want him to grow up right, I am over it now. Celine straight up dropped him off and said she is going to Maimi for a week, Josiah answered the door because if I did, I would have dragged her ass but she thinks she can drop this child off when she wants. We have a family wedding coming up soon so I am buying him some clothes “shall we get them off now?” getting up from my position “come” he held my hand, I don’t think this child talks at all “is this your child?” the store assistant asked and I was quick to say “no, hell no. I mean he’s my nephew, he’s very quiet” walking back into the fitting room, I was actually thinking. Knowing Celine, she probably drank and had drugs with this child. I mean he is normal looking but I don’t think he is right in the mind or he hasn’t had guidance or even love, maybe it’s love. He’s going to be two and he doesn’t speak, he says maybe hi at time and some random shit but that is it “that’s a good boy, you can undress yourself” least he can do it.

I bought him a few more things, I am trying to be a better person. Picking Bryce up and placing him on the counter as the lady tallied the total up “that’s all for you nephew” the lady smiled at Bryce “he is so adorable” Bryce smiled and looked away “he must like you, he don’t smile at many people. I think he already knows beautiful women” the store assistant gasped with the biggest smile on her face “erm, thank you?” she didn’t know what to say “no problem” she looked back at the till “erm that is hundred and thirty six dollars and seventy two cents” digging into my pocket “he’s lucky to have you as an uncle” I chuckled “you think? First time bringing him out, I think he cost too much” passing the assistant the cash “he’s a cutie” taking the bags from the counter “you ever hear that saying? A guy with a child is more of a turn on?” I couldn’t help but laugh “you saying having a child with me I can pull women?” grabbing Bryce to get him down “there is one thing though, I don’t need a child to pull any woman. Pulling Bryce up onto my lap as we sat down just outside the H&M store we went too, looking at the receipt before I placed it in the bag “you happy now?” he rested his head on my shoulder, I am guessing yes then. I wish my mom was here now, I swear when Josiah walked into the home with this child and said we have him for a week, I wanted to kill him. I was like we have the house to ourselves and we can relax, but no “shall we go and get you some toys now or you want food?” I forgot when he ate now, he ate when I did so I am currently hungry “eat” Bryce said “that’s what I am saying boy! You need to speak to me” I am tired as shit actually. Sofia is childish as shit, she ain’t speaking to me. Her form of punishment but yet texts me goodnight, I don’t understand her at all “you know at first I was like that can’t be him and then I look closer, and it is” looking away from Bryce and up at the person speaking to me “are you stalking me?” the first thing that came out from my mouth “not exactly, I came shopping with my brother. He needs some school shoes” so this is Sofia’ brother, he looks like a pain in the ass but I won’t say that. Looking back at Sofia “how is life treating you? I am her work colleague” I lied “you look like a drug dealer” I opened my mouth and then closed it “wow, is that what you teach him? What does a drug dealer look like exactly?” he’s cheeky “my sister works in a office, you got Rolex and big chains and stuff. I’m right Sofia aren’t I?” looking up at Sofia “is he?” I said to her “Leyton, don’t be cheeky” she didn’t agree with him “it’s like fate brings us together even when you are not speaking to me” she’s just stubborn “how you finding it without me?” I smiled at her “fun” I have to annoy her “I don’t have to deal with your snoring, your constant annoyance. It’s great” she put a finger up at me “well I am glad you’re playing daddy day care” she pointed at me “you mean I am being a good human, you think I am a bad person but I’m not” I wish she would stop being like this with me “Sofia, can I go there and get a cookie? I will be back?” her brother said “erm yeah, hurry up” she made herself comfortable and sat next to me.

“How come you have Celine’ son with you?” Sofia asked “because, I’ve been keeping this away from you, but he’s really my child” Sofia hit my arm “I will kill you” my eyes widened “and your brother calls me the drug dealer, when you want to kill me? Just admit you miss and we can go back to the regular schedule, my parents have gone. The house is mine, ok Celine decided to bring him along but if you don’t stop being hard headed you could be with me” Sofia rolled her eyes “what exactly is going to make you change?” I sighed out “we have spoke on this, I have changed some of it for you. You making me feel I am stuck again, I hate feeling like this. I am sorry I am not normal ok, that is what you want. You can stop speaking to me for a month but nothing will change more, if you love me then love me. You don’t have to love what I do but love me, I did choose you. You know what, this is on you. You can decide on what you want to do” moving Bryce off of my lap “I know what I want but you can’t accept what I am, your friends have the perfect life. I don’t” picking up the bags from the floor, I will let her decide.

Cassius is so silly, he thinks I want him perfect. It was never that, I just want him to be safe, I want a future with him. I love him so much, it’s crazy how in love I am with him. He said his parents are gone so it should be only Josiah here, it’s weird because both of his cars are here, he did say his old car was in repair. I thought I would come and see him myself, show him what I want and that is him. We just need to speak on what we both want, I need to probably be fair to him but I do have something for him, well an idea. Locking my car door behind me, it’s a little late and I have been contemplating on not walking in because what if his parents are here, I don’t want them to attack me but the home looks pretty dead so let me test this. Walking up the path, I will actually kill Cassius if his parents are here. I can deal with Josiah, not his sister though but I will tell her to shut up if she tried to disrespect me. Pressing the doorbell, these are the only black family I know of that their doorbell works, I mean most of the time they don’t. I hope he is home, knowing him he is probably asleep “I wonder who is at the door” hearing Josiah say, stepping back a little as he opened the door “oh” he said “is Cassius here?” seeing Celine’ child here “erm, he isn’t. He went out, he did say he would be back though” it’s late already so where is he “erm, you can come in?” this is what I mean about Josiah he is the sweet twin.

Sitting down slowly, this is weird for me. I mean his parents would’ve probably kicked me out “how have you been?” Josiah finally sat with me, he has been hiding away from me “good, I was just feeding Bryce, that is why I was not here” I judged him too early “how come you and your brother are watching him?” Bryce is very shy “we wasn’t supposed too, Celine just popped up. I did tell my mom and she said if we good then leave us to it, he’s a good kid. He chills with us” he’s actually my cousin “that’s good” I hope Cassius isn’t too long “so how long have you been dating Cassius?” I paused not saying a word “who told you I was dating him? I mean we could be friends?” Josiah laughed “Celine came to the home and sang like a bird, my parents know now and then Cassius admitted to it. I didn’t ever agree to how my twin treated you” I swallowed hard “I chose the wrong twin” Josiah laughed “it’s weird how Jordan never got this calm trait from you guys, Jasmine is a little like Jordan though. I know that” hearing the front door open “you ain’t wrong and that must be him” I hope it is “C!?” Bryce actually speaks “yeah, uncle C is here. Go and get him” he ran off “have you ever though of taking him off my cousin? The child would be better off without her, it looks like she has already destroyed him a little” it’s sad “why ain’t you asleep young one?” that is Cassius “Josiah, wasn’t you supposed to feed and put him to sleep ages ago” Cassius walked in with his nephew in hand “I was busy doing other things but Sofia is here” Cassius stared at me “someone got some balls coming here” Cassius put Bryce down “come” he waved me over to him.

Following him up the stairs “where have you been?” I asked, I had to ask “you want the truth?” I sighed out “I was giving money out to the workers” rolling my eyes “right” I want to hit him, in the face too “so you’re the first girl to enter this room, I didn’t bring any girl home either so it’s a first” he opened the bedroom door “it’s a little messy, don’t touch any of the balled up tissues” pulling a face at him “seriously? At your age, that is nasty” he closed the door behind me, and then quickly ran by me and picked something off of the side table. His bedroom is cute actually “what was that you just picked up?” walking closer inside “oh wow, Cassius” I said in shock “uhm yeah, my graduation picture” he looks so cute “you graduated?” I don’t remember him saying that “yeah, I didn’t get accounting randomly. It was something I wanted to do” he has so many pictures “what about this?” I pointed “that was when my mom made me take professional pictures with our dog, she died now but I miss her. I was like eighteen here” he is so sentimental and he doesn’t even notice it “you look like your dad, a lot actually, feature wise. I didn’t expect this from your room actually. And these boys who are they?” I pointed “Myles and Kyle, my best friends. We was in High School. We started our empire in that place” turning around “Oh right, what did you just move though?” he did move something “just something” he shrugged moving back “you like the Brooklyn Nets then? But show me” he laughed “it’s dumb but yeah I do” he is being annoying “shit is just cheesy, like you know. I like things” he makes no sense, he bought the thing he was hiding forward “I just keep it on the side table, you know. Peyton x Blaine, post-“Some Like It Hot Mess.” Part angsty fix-it-fic, part smut, with just a dash of songfic along the way for flavor. A plot bunny that would not be denied, this was heavily inspired by Lorde’s Melodrama, especially “Sober.” 

Summary: What happens when you and your ex both decide to drown your feelings rather than facing them...on the same weekend, in the same small town? “Most of the time she appreciates being able to drink just about anybody under the table, but when all she wants is to forget her own name until morning, her high threshold is a pain in the ass.”

Peyton is spacing out at work, lost behind her efficient mask. She’s so angry at Blaine for lying, even more furious at herself for falling for it–for wanting to believe it, queen of denial–and she feels so guilty for the part she played in Blaine, well, playing them all.

It’s too much at once. She’s drowning.

The worst part is not being able to lean on her friends. How much she misses Blaine is the last thing they would want to hear about right now.

Maybe that’s the worst part, actually: how much she does miss him, even while she completely hates him, too.

So she is exhausted and more than ready for a vacation when her cousin invites her down the coast to use his beach house for the weekend. It isn’t like her to actually take time off, but Baracus practically shoves her out the door, wanting her refreshed for his campaign.

Dylan left the key under the mat along with a note that just says ‘Hey. The Sand Dollar is good. Love.’ That’s his code for “Hello. There’s not much fun to be had around here, but The Sand Dollar is your best bet if you need it. Love ya, cousin.”

Sneaking away without inviting anybody else along had seemed like a good idea at the time, but as soon as Peyton drops her bag on the couch and listens to the windy silence, she knows she'll go crazy just lying around for two days. She’ll spend all her time thinking about what she came to escape.

Who, her treacherous brain corrects her, which she ruthlessly ignores.

She heads for The Sand Dollar, which turns out to be a seedy bar just off the beach, full of handsy, stoned locals and drunk kids on spring break.

Obviously it isn’t her scene–not the kind of place you’d ever expect to find Peyton Charles, Assistant DA to the aspiring mayor of Seattle. But it is dark, and secluded, and has plenty of alcohol…which tonight, she decides, will be just fine.

She takes a seat at the bar with Lyft at the ready–in this day and age, who needs friends when an app can send you a designated driver?–and signals to the bartender.

“Tequila,” Peyton tells him. Ready for that escape, she lets the flashbacks hit her the way the liquid hits the shot glass, slow and warm. They’ll be washed away soon enough.

Shot #1.

Reckless normally didn’t suit her, and even the people who knew her best–especially them–would’ve been shocked by her behavior, but she didn’t care. Aching lately, intrigued by this man who had confounded her expectations from the moment they met, and loosened up by the whiskey, Peyton deliberately turned off the critical-thinking side of her brain and gave in to the sensation of his body pressing hers into the couch.

Her office couch, where she spent so many late nights stressing over the Mr. Boss case as potential CIs declined her offers; the place where she’d sunk down, shaking and pretending she wasn’t scared, after Mr. Boss himself had threatened her and waltzed out unnoticed. A place her hyper-professional self would never have invited over anyone she was dating for drinks, let alone started making out with them.

Let alone…dear lord, he had amazing hands. It had been too long since she was touched, such a long time since she let herself be open to it, vulnerable. But Peyton trusted him, a former lowlife drug dealer of all people, because he’d given her no reason not to. Instead he came to soothe her nerves and held back when she gave him every flirtatious opening.

“You’re sure?” he paused to ask when things got more heated, his own speech a little slurred. Her nod seemed to be enough for him, as he searched her eyes for consent and got her hand pulling him back toward her by the nape of his neck.

Shot #2.

His fingers stroked down her back while he murmured in her ear, more words about how gorgeous she was, how much he wanted her, how he’d been drawn to her from the moment they met. She lifted up her own shirt, wanting to ask him to hurry, please, to just keep going, but she couldn’t find the ability to speak.

The pressure building inside her normally would’ve alarmed her, so intense so quickly, with someone she didn’t know that well. It was that charming, self-aware grin and those insanely blue eyes that made her stomach muscles twitch, contrasted with his trying-too-hard hair and slightly hesitant moves. The combination made him seem more sweet than cocky, someone who she believed when he said he wanted to atone.

She bit back a moan when he shifted, his lips against the bare skin of her throat. “God, don’t stop,” she said, and then his hands were stroking over her black satin bra, cupping her as she arched against him.

Tugging his shirt off and trailing her fingers down his chest, she enjoyed the way he shivered. Their skin was slick where it met, her bare legs entwined with his, everything too hot and bright and slow.

“Oh, God.” His tongue was circling her nipple even as his hands traveled lower. Eyes shut to the sensations, her breathing hitched when he slid a hand down her leg, then under her skirt and across the sensitive skin of her inner thigh.

She unbuttoned him with her eyes still shut. His mouth was teasing against hers as he stroked his fingertips along the lace edges of her underwear.

She was wet and ready by the time she tugged his pants down. Balanced precariously against the cushions, he slid into her, the two of them shuddering in unison. Then they were moving together, faster and faster, the tension building, until he came on top of her while she was still shaking from her own climax.

Wondering to herself if they’d just permanently dented her fancy office furniture, she started giggling in her post-coital glow. With his face buried in her hair, he didn’t even ask why she was laughing.

Shot #3.

“Can’t we just stay here all day?” Blaine was idly curling her hair around one of his fingers while the sun streamed through the gauzy curtains. Seattle had a terrible reputation for rain and general gloom, but every once in a while its residents caught a perfect spring morning.

How long had it been since she felt so utterly relaxed? Just being around new-and-improved-Blaine made it easier for her to take a mental step back from all the apocalyptic drama, so after their second night together as a sort-of-couple, Peyton knew just how he felt.

“Mm, I wish,” she replied, arching back a little against his chest. “Gotta get up, though. Brush my teeth…eat…do people stuff.”

“Ah. Yeah, that stuff.” He pressed a kiss to her shoulder, then just rested his nose in the curve of it and lingered there.

“Blaine.”

“Hmm?”

“Getting up. Remember?”

“Right.” He moved his lips up the line of her neck, grinning when she hummed in approval. “You sure?”

“Yeah. Breakfast time,” she informed him. “I’m starving.”

“Okay,” he agreed with a yawn. “Who’s cooking?”

Catching her look, Blaine raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t think I know how?”

“Well, not to cast aspersions on your boarding school upbringing, but the only thing I know you used to know how to cook was brains. Anyway, this is my apartment. I didn’t expect you to offer.”

Sitting up, he watched her slide out of bed. “It seems only fair. Tell you what: you cook today, and I’ll be up next time. Who knows, maybe I’ll surprise you.”

She ended it. Both times, she got to hold onto at least that little bit of control. Or pride. For whatever good it did.

The first time, as enraged and disgusted as she was, she couldn’t quite keep eye contact. He was a literal monster and yet there was real hurt in his expression. Disappointment, too. She couldn’t believe in it, but that didn’t mean she didn’t see it.

The second time was worse.

Now, she knew him. His family history and why he seemed so fragile sometimes, his ability to be truly sweet and selfless and silly. So the second time, when she left him there in his office, looking as lost and stunned as she felt, Peyton knew she was breaking his heart. What he had of one, anyway.

Because that was what happened when you really put your trust in someone, especially when it was messy and difficult and they were maybe the last person you should trust, and then they made you regret it.

They broke your heart…and you owed them the same.

She’s not drunk yet, though she’s finally starting to head in that direction. Most of the time Peyton appreciates being able to drink just about anybody under the table, but when all she wants is to forget her own name until morning, her high threshold is a pain in the ass.

So she’s about to signal to the bartender to pour again, or maybe just leave the bottle, when she catches something through the chatter of the crowd that makes her freeze in place, head tilting to hear it better over the flirting and dancing and rousing arguments that surround her.

Damn it, she would recognize that silky, melancholy voice anywhere.

Of all the bars on all the beachfronts, Blaine had to walk into hers.

I was recently in a car accident. The other driver T boned me and he's at fault. I have my car towed to a certified BMW repair shop. The insurance adjuster assessed my car and approve the repairs.I later found out that they are going to repair my car with piece meal parts from used car from a junk yard.
