sorry to fruits basket (2001) haters. sorry you don't like 2000s shoujo anime eyes and cringe and sweet music playing every 2 minutes but i'm different. you may have watched it as a kid and can no longer return to it due to your association with your past self but not me, i'm watching it for the first time and i'm enjoying myself greatly

rewatching the 2001 fruits basket anime that i haven't seen since i was probably. fourteen idk. the funimation sound effect took me way back. it's fucking wild how this anime literally opens with a schoolgirl emerging from a tent because that's where she lives ever since her mom died. how do you fall through the cracks of social services that hard
this style is so of its era but everyone looks just a little bit ridiculous bc this is when everyone was still drawing eyes WIDER rather than LONGER so you have to set them kind of ridiculously far apart to not look cross eyed

Anime Review: Fruits Basket (2019)
Before I start this review, I want to preface that this is MY PERSONAL OPINION . If you disagree or like a certain show that I do not like, that is fine :)
TW: Suicide, trauma, abuse
Genre: Romance
Seasons: 2001 version (1 season)
2019 version (3 seasons)
Mangas: 23 volumes
Anime Info:
Fruits Basket was first released in 2001 and ran for one season. In 2019 it got a revamped version with a more vibrant style but stayed with the original character designs. They stayed true to the original show, even using the same jokes, characters, and scenes.
So you , might be thinking, if you watched the original version, why bother rewatching it in the 2019 version? Well the original ended pretty short, barley getting into the depth and backgrounds of the story. The reboot continues the story, staying true to the manga and lets you get to know all the unique characters better, even meeting some new ones they never showed in the first version.
This isn’t just a soppy romance either. It shows some dark and serious issues such as neglect, abuse, regret, suicide, trauma, etc. In your opinion, they go a great way about this as well without it being pushed too much or being used as shock factor.
Storyline: Tohru Honda is a young high school student who works part time while going to school. Honda’s mom passed away, and due to other living difficulties, she feels she has no choice but to live in a tent out in the woods. Little to her knowledge, she camped out on the Soma’s property.
The Soma’s were a wealthy and mysterious family. Tohru went to school with the most popular boy in school, Yuki Soma. He was a very handsome, smart and popular boy that many classmates fawned over. Yuki and his older cousin, Shigure, discover Tohru’s tent and offer her a place to stay with them while her grandpas place is renovated.
While living there she is introduced to more Somas such as Kyo Soma, another main character. While there she discovers that they are all part of the zodiacs. If hugged by the opposite sex, they transform to their assigned zodiac animal. With this knowledge, she must keep the secret of the family.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
I loved this anime so much. It is true to the mangas and it is very emotional and beautiful. they know how to tug at your heart strings. I am not a romance anime person, but I fell in love with this anime. I didn’t give it a full 5 stars because some of the side plots seemed very corny at times, but I think that comes with most romance anime’s. I highly recommend this anime and look forward to reading the manga in the future.

Sorry if I confused you there’s anime ver of fruits basket the 2019 ver and 2001 but aslo if read the manga that great sorry for the confusion
No problem. I just wasn't sure if there was some Fullmetal Alchemist-style alternate universe between the manga and the anime(s) that I was completely unaware of.
I've seen the first anime, some of the second, and read all of the manga (including Another), so we're good.

Anime Update V2 20
Noragami Aragoto - New arc started with the reveal that Yato made a promise to Tenjin that he’d sever ties with Hiyori, but he does not want to keep that promise since it’d violate the wish Hiyori made to him. Then this Ebisu guy, clearly some dude impersonating a god of the same name, wants to literally buy Yukine off of Yato, but of course Yato ends up declining the offer. Yato being given his own miniature shrine at the end, and his sincere, tearful reaction, was incredibly touching and reminded me of why I love these characters and the bond that they share. Also, in that one part where Bishamon met with a council of unseen gods...was one of them f**king Beerus?
Hunter x Hunter - This part of the plot where Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio are climbing the mountain to reach the Zoldyck Family home honestly isn’t all that much to write about, creepiness of the family butler aside. The real fun will start when they reach where Killua is.
Fruits Basket - This might be the first time where both the 2001 anime and the 2019 anime had virtually identical episodes! While both had their own respective styles and played out some of the scenes a little differently, they both covered the exact same ground of our meeting Hatsuharu Sohma and learning about his past with Yuki after watching him fight with Kyo until Yuki falls ill. Justin Cook voices both sides of Haru’s persona very well in both dubs (he’s basically like Kagura but more in control of his wilder side when it comes out, making him more dangerous). Key dub differences was that his aggressive persona is called “Black Haru” in the first dub but “Dark Haru” in the second, and his Zodiac animal is “the cow” in the first dub but “the ox” in the second. Also, the voice acting for young Haru “exploding” at Yuki was noticably a lot better in the latter dub.
Rozen Maiden - Basically just a calm before the storm of the two-part season finale. Just more cute fun times with the Rozen Maidens, including the visiting Suiseiseki and Souseiseki, while Shinku goes quiet due to the wager she accepted from Suigintou, also getting more backstory on Rozen and his dolls, and why Shinku has come to believe that "to live means to fight". The episode ends with Shinku bidding farewell before departing for a battle that could cost her life.
Fate/Stay Night - Kirei has brought his totally shocking, not at all obvious true sociopathic villainous nature out into the open, revealing that he’s been in control of Lancer (who I legit forgot even existed, it’s been that long since he showed up) this whole time and is also in a pact with Gilgamesh that dates back to the end of the last Grail War. Kirei tries to kill Shirou but Saber comes to his rescue and heals his wounds. Lancer also turned against Gilgamesh due to having been in the dark about him but he got overwhelmed and slain by the Golden Hero. With Ilya falling ill, Saber having a new resolve to live, and Shirou learning the full truth about his father, it’s endgame time!
Revolutionary Girl Utena - This time one of Nanami’s “insect” friends who it turns out always had feelings for her big brother Touga but could never act on them due to the promise of total fealty to Nanami that she and the two others made. When she does get a moment with Touga and as consequence expelled from Nanami’s cliche by a cruel and vengeful Nanami, it makes her ideal prey for Mikage to corrupt into a Black Rose Duelist, leading to a duel that gets a fantastic punchline of Utena having no idea who this girl even is and what her deal was, she’s so secondary. And why do these episodes always end on snap-backs? Is it ever getting explained?
Love Live! Nijigasaki School Idol Club S2 - A lesser episode than the previous three (largely due to a severe lack of Lanzhu in it) but still of a notably higher quality than the usual fare of the first season. It actually brings in a very interesting dilemma - is it okay for a school idol like Ai to live it up to her fullest and have fun when her older normie friend who was such an inspiration to her is now much less active and can barely proccess fun anymore due to her illness? And as Ai’s friendly rival, where does Karin fit in? It was really nice to see play out. Ai and Karin have now formed the next subunit as a pair.
MAR - First round of the War Games concluded with Ginta fighting the big, stony Chesspiece who is also the father of the previous two Chesspieces on his team that got fought by Alviss and Jack. Ginta’s righteous fury over how repugnant the Chesspieces are in their crimes against humanity helped him win the fight, but I also liked how these Chesspieces were humanized in that they’re a family that loves each other. The dad even got so strong with so many powerful ARMs specifically to protect his two kids from harm, which inspires the kids to put more dedication into training and pulling their own weight so that they can help their dad and he won’t have to shoulder it all alone anymore. It was real sweet. Hope to see them again some time.
AMC: Bakugan Battle Brawlers - Watched both episodes 9 and 10. Episode 9 was mostly centered on Alice, who despite not engaging in any Bakugan brawls herself, knows more about the game and all of its rules, stratetgies, and intricacies than anyone else. She, Runo, and Marucho faced off against a pair of boys wanting to help a girl they’re friends with but in a misguided way that Masquerade gave them, all while Dan and Drago are lost in the airport. Alice clearly worries that her grandfather might be the “Michael” who colluded with Naga (and he is), and also might be harboring more secrets that not even she’s aware of. Episode 10 then takes a detour to the outback where Julie lives, in an episode where Julie spends the midsection of it whining about not needing a talking Bakugran and then only gets one when she admits that she really does want one. That one is kind of weird because Masquerade doesn’t show up in it at all. We got so used to his presence as the bad guy and suddenly he’s MIA? Well it does make sense, he can’t leave Japan that easily ‘cause... reasons.
AND
Happy Sugar Life - I just........uh....OK? Wow. As deeply unsettling and uncomfortable as this show has been so far, Satou’s auntie has to be the most fucking terrifying thing to come out of it yet. I mean, no fucking wonder Satou is as messed up as she is - she was raised by this person who is a thousand times MORE messed up! Like, at first she’s kind of cute and funny in how lovey-dovey and in perpetual good spirits she is, but that exact personality fast turns into a living nightmare when she bears down on the policeman and gets all touchy-feely while psycho-analyzing him and his secret yearning to be loved, loving that she’d happily give such a “good boy!” Eeeugh, it was just so appalling to watch! But while she’s erratic crazy, Satou is calculating crazy. She went to her Aunt’s apartment on purpose not just to throw Shouko off and not expose her living with Shio, but she also knew that creeper teacher was stalking them and had called an investigation team into the matter. The kicker here is not just that she again makes the teacher piss himself in fright and get him to know his place, but she makes Shouko think that she’s been the one who’s acted like a selfish, incompatible friend to her who’d pryed into her private life (which isn’t even her private life anymore and has not been for some time!) - the magnificent bitch! Can anything stop her?
...Maybe Asahi? I mean, he can try if he were to just, y’know, show up more. I demand lots more Asahi for the next 5 episodes, stat!
AND
Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie - My overall impression is basically this. I fucking love the titular not-just-a-cutie Shikimori herself, and the friends she’s got nice chemistry with like Neko, Hachimitsu, and “Nice Bakugo” are fun as well. But this all ought to be in service to Shikimori to make her stand on her own as a character other than just Izumi’s cute and cool girlfriend who props up his character in his plots. I wanna watch this for the badass bae, not some dweeby guy!

fruits basket
you know what's extremely amazing about fruits basket 2001 episode 26??? like a lot of things, like omg the mood, the rain, the drama, the trauma
but also - tohru looks completely and utterly defeated when she confronts kyo, she's covered in mud, she can't look at him, she looks like she's already lost. she's crying, she's a mess. i could totally imagine another anime/manga where she's at her most determined and defiant, but it just means soooo much that she's so disheartened and about to break. she's so scared, but even so, that's her friend and she has to try...
ummmm gosh every time i rewatch fruits basket 2001, i'm more impressed. it's got style, fluid animation, incredible comedic timing ugh i love it so much.

I decided to look into anime and manga art styles this past week, focusing on Fruits Basket. I started watching Fruits Basket in 2021, and after finishing the first two seasons, season three was released later that year. While I waited for season three to release, I watched the 2001 version and started to read the mangas. I noticed how different each of the art styles is from the other. The newest one was obviously my favorite, because it somewhat stuck to the style, while upgrading it in other ways.
Own thing that the original illustrator or Artist, Natsuki Takaya, did was make the eyes larger than normal animes and give them softer features with longer bodies. When the anime was created in 2001, they took those pictures and did great at copying her style for the animation, and her color schemes. She used a lot of pastel colors. When the 2019 version was released, it was a little duller, with more of the trauma being met.
I want to see that happen in my own artwork

Fruits Basket Hiatus - Day 97
Questions by @immaanimationnerd
Question #97: What is your favorite art style/version of Furuba? I’d say the options are: Beginning of the manga (chapters 1-45ish?), Middle of the manga (chapters 45-90ish), End of the manga (90-end), the 2001 anime, 2019 anime, and Natsuki Takaya’s current style (you can check it out on her twitter!)
For me, personally, I love Takaya’s latest style the most, and also that if the 2019 anime. Don’t get me wrong, I love her original work from the very beginning, but it’s like every great artist; you start out one way, get lots more practice, and you get better and better after each time.
The same goes for the 2001 anime; I love that style! It has some of the funniest animation I’ve ever seen, but I think what turns me away from it in the end is some of the inaccuracies that it gave us, such as Tohru having blue eyes instead of brown. Even so, I love it for the nostalgia it gives me! The 2019 anime is just so beautiful in its style! I think it has some of the prettiest and smoothest animation I’ve seen compared to other animes I love.

Anime Recommendations!
Hi everyone, I hope y’all are safe and happy! With quarantine still in place (at least in my country), I’m gonna keep the random rec lists coming! I’ve been watching a lotttt of animes and rewatching favourites, so I thought I’d share some of my favourites of all time! A lot of them are pretty mainstream, but for my friends who aren’t really into anime, these will get you hooked! In no particular order, let’s get started!
1. Snow White with the Red Hair, 24 episodes
Tumblr media
This is hands down my favourite anime of all time. This shoujo anime make me feel so happy and it’s so wholesome, honestly such a feel good anime. Without spoiling too much, it’s about a herbalist named Shirayuki who ends up having to flee her home country and ends up meeting Prince Zen and goes to live in his country. The cast of characters in the anime is so good, there’s not a character to dislike. The genuine build up of friendship and eventual romance is just so sweet please watch.
2. Demon slayer (26 episodes)
Tumblr media
One of the best anime I’ve watched this past year. This anime has amazing plot, awesome animation and a great cast of characters. This anime follows Tanjiro as he becomes a demon slayer after a demon killed his family. Tanjiro and his sister, Nezuko were the only survivors but Nezuko was turned in a demon and now Tanjiro is on a journey to change he back into a human. If you are into anime with amazing fight scenes, I highly recommend.
3. Hunter x Hunter (148 episodes)
Tumblr media
I am currently watching this anime and it honestly made it onto my lists of favourite anime super quickly. The series starts with Gon and his quest to become a pro hunter and find his dad and goes on from there. With so many episodes and arcs, you can’t stop watching. The characters immediately hooked me on this show, Killua and Gon’s friendship is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen in anime, I literally want to adopt both of them. This anime is so heartwarming but also kinda dark and action packed.
4. Haikyuu!! (73 episodes, on-going)
Tumblr media
My favourite sports anime my god. Haikyuu follows a high school volleyball team as they try to make it to nationals. This series made me so much more emotional than I thought it would, but you get so involved with the team and characters and want them to succeed. All of the characters from all of the teams are also fantastic and hilarious. If you need a fun but exciting anime, please please please watch Haikyuu!!
5. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (64 episodes)
Tumblr media
Where to even begin. I would say this is one of the most popular anime and for good freaking reason. Without giving too much away, this anime follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric as they go on a quest to get their bodies back. Honestly this is one of my fav animes, if you like awesome fight scenes and really intriguing plot, you will love this anime.
6. Yona of the Dawn (24 episodes)
Tumblr media
Another amazing anime but sadly, unfinished. I think this anime is best to watch w/o knowing very much. Just know that there is really good characters and character development and a very attractive love interest :))))
7. Soul eater (51 episodes)
Tumblr media
One of the first animes I ever watched and as I remember it’s hella awesome, if you like halloween then the whole atmosphere of this anime will intrigue you. The fight scenes in this are really fun and so are the characters. If you need a fun medium length anime, I would recommend this one!
8. Inuyasha (193 episodes)
Tumblr media
This anime is worth all the hype in my opinion. The plot was great, the characters are fantastic and romance is so freaking cute I can’t. I’m also a sucker for asshole characters who are secretly really sweet.
9. Fruits Basket (2019) (25 episodes (S1), S2 on-going)
Tumblr media
This is the cutest anime. The whole cast characters is amazing and you get so attached so fast. The protagonist is so sweet and optimistic and I really just wanna protect her. I went into this knowing next nothing and I think that’s the best way to do it. The 2001 version is good too but 2019 has better animation and is closer to managa (and has more episodes!).
10. My Hero Academia (88 episodes, on-going)
Tumblr media
I love this anime with my whole heart. There is an adorable cast of characters and amazing fight scenes, I love this sm. It’s set in a world where like 95% of the population has ‘quirks’ which are basically super powers but not all of them are super powerful. Super heroes protect cities and the anime follows a high school where the students are training to become heroes. The main character is born without a quirk but through some crazy circumstances he ends up acquiring one. In my opinion this anime is worth the hype.
11. Ouran Highschool Host Club (26 episodes)
Tumblr media
This one is wild. Ouran Highschool Host club is so iconic and it’s hilarious, I laughed out loud watching this one so much. Honestly I went into this knowing nothing and I think its funnier that way.
12. Yuri!!! On Ice (13 episodes)
Tumblr media
THIS ANIME. The first sports anime w/ canon LGBTQ+ romance and its beautiful. I love the style, the skating, the music, the characters, just everything about it. This follows Yuri Katsuki, a professional figure skater from Japan and his skating career. After messing up a major championship, Yuri is lost and doesn’t know what to do w/ his career. After seeing a video of Yuri skate, his idol Victor, a skating legend, shows up to be his coach. Please watch this anime.
13. Attack on Titan (62 episodes, on-going)
Tumblr media
If you are looking for a badass action anime this is the one for you. Humanity has fallen to the mercy of giant man-eating titans, and the people that survived live within a walled city to keep the titans out. This anime is a little disturbing and violent but it is so badass. Also Levi, the most badass character ever, makes this entire anime worth watching.
14. Ao Haru Ride (12 episodes)
Tumblr media
Hands down my favourite romance anime. This anime is so freaking cute and it gave me so many fuzzy feelings. The animation is also super nice so that is always a plus. It follows Futaba and Kou who liked each other in middle school but were separated. They meet again in high school but they have both changed so much. If you want a romance anime I really recommend this one.
15. Naruto (720 episodes)
Tumblr media
This is a freaking classic and really long. Almost everyone and their mother has heard of this anime or watched some of it before. Basically it’s about ninjas and follows mainly Naruto Uzumaki who want to eventually be the leader of his village but his ninja skills need a lot of work. I honestly didn’t think I would love this anime as much as I did but its just so good. It is a very big commitment to finish though so be prepared.
16. Your Lie in April (22 episodes)
Tumblr media
Well this anime is literally beautiful. It is centered around 2 teens w/ major musical talent. It gets deep very fast but its also light hearted and wholesome. This anime made me cry like a baby so get your tissues ready.

why you should watch fruits basket
I love this show and I think more people should see it. Not just because it's brilliant, but because it will give you good feelings. I've needed good feelings lately.
Fruits Basket is an anime that got rebooted in 2019. (The 2001 version is all right, but it's incomplete and does some weird stuff with the story because there wasn't enough of the manga published at the time to show more. The 2019 version is much better, so watch that one.) I don't know a ton about anime, but Fruits Basket is really something special. It's way more than a high school slice-of-life show with a wide-eyed protagonist.
Fruits Basket is emotional as fuck, but in a good way. In that, "I want to experience feelings and catharsis but not be flattened" kind of way. And the majority of the feelings are good ones.
Many of the characters have tragic backstories, and the mains are under a curse, but that's just a brilliant plot setup for a story that's about trust, connection and friendship. Relationships. Personal growth. Found family. Healing. Kindness.
The main character is kind in a way that, as an American viewer, led to fascinating conversations about how kind we could be vs how kind we should be, and Buddhist values vs the American emphasis on personal boundaries...great food for thought all around. (If you're not American, I'd especially like to hear what you think of her!)
The animation is gorgeous. All of the main characters are very attractive. And fascinating: each one of them are motivated by very different things, and yet kind of all the same thing, too. There isn't a one that couldn't have a ton of fanfic written about them.
The story focuses on the female main character and the two boys closest to her, but it's not a love triangle. The boys do both want her affection, however, the competition between them is about much more than that. I love this about the show! In some anime it would be all love triangle all the time, but this is instead a very complex and fascinating connection between three people that changes all of their lives.
The English voice acting is spectacular. I almost never say this, but: watch it in English. (Laura Bailey plays the main character, and one of the behind-the-scenes interviews said that her work on the 2001 Fruits Basket was so amazing that it inspired other voice actors to imitate her style, causing a shift in the whole industry.)
Despite the manga having begun in 1998, the show is quite progressive. For example, while nothing is stated explicitly -- because nothing was, back then -- it's clear there are bisexual characters, and more than one person we might now call genderfluid. Yes, there are a few things the author could have handled better, but I consider them cultural artifacts from that time. The author writes with such emotional intelligence that, if she were writing today, I know she'd do even better with these characters.
And the ending? The ending pays everything off, exactly how you'd want to see it. It's a fantastic journey, start to finish. It gives me such warm feelings and enjoyment. Even the stuff that makes me cry (in a good way -- we do not stan shows that leave us devastated, not in the year of our grog 2022).
If you watch it, I will watch it with you, or squee with you after every episode, speculate, discuss, and analyze. And even if you don't include me, I encourage you to do it anyway. Happy viewing!

Honestly the problem with wanting an anime reboot of Skip Beat a la Fruits Basket 2019 is that SB's anime still kind of holds up. Not that FB 2001 is bad or anything, but it's noticably more dated and the anime original ending that didn't go over well was more incentive to give it another go around.
SB's, meanwhile, doesn't look as dated (if we ignore the characters' fashion sense). Plus the anime was ridiculously faithful to the source material in a way that not a lot of popular anime at the time could match, meaning they wouldn't really be changing much if they decided to reboot it. And, well, unlike FB, Skip Beat isn't finished yet and it doesn't look to be ending any time soon. It'd either be another instance of 2008's version where they cut the anime off in the middle of an arc, or they wait for it to be finished.
Still though, it would be so nice to see SB with a more modern art style and animation. And honestly I'd be perfectly fine with it not completely finishing the story. A big hurdle for people getting into SB is the art style, and even just adapting to the Box R arc would catch people up enough to see the noticable improvement in the art. Ideally though, it would go all the way to the Heel siblings.
But for real, now that FB's anime is in it's final episodes and the two titans don't have to fight each other for attention (the obvious reason that SB hasn't gotten a reboot yet), it is now the perfect time to reveal a teaser trailer where a faceless, nameless woman narrates about how everyone is born with a box and that box is about to open [COMING SOON IN 2022]

fruits basket hiatus day 97
question #97: what is your favorite art style/version of furuba? i’d say the options are: beginning of the manga (chapters 1-45ish?), middle of the manga (chapters 45-90ish), end of the manga (90-end), the 2001 anime, 2019 anime, and natsuki takaya’s current style (you can check it out on her twitter!)
i love pretty much all styles of furuba, but one of my favorites has to be the 2019 style of course, because that’s the style of furuba i was introduced to and when i think of the characters, i think of them in that art style. it’s also just beautifully drawn and they all look so pretty🤧
my other favorite would be natsuki’s art style from the end of the manga. i’m not a manga reader, but the glimpses i have seen from the end of the manga are SO PRETTY like,, aaaaa. i posted a small little thing that’s drawn in the later art style under the 2019 art style. i’m not sure when it takes place but i loveee the way kyo and tohru are drawn here. they’re just too precious T^T
the last favorite i have is natsuki’s current art style, the one she posts on her twitter (i would post it, but i want to respect her wishes of not reposting her art). it’s just so soft and so sweet and the kyoru art she posts makes me want to cry jdhdhsh. it’s also super similar to the remake art style which i love a lot!
