who: aisha & @jordanxfields
where: state park
when: earth week (april, 2024)
With a pair of hiking boots she'd bought specifically for the occasion, Aisha waited by the entrance of the state park for Jordan. She could admit she hadn't been that into hiking, but when the other suggested it, she figured it couldn't hurt to give it another try. And there hadn't been a better time to visit the State Park than Earth Week when everyone was getting out to the trails. As she glanced to see the other approach, she gave a wave. "Ready to get your hike on?" she asked, with a grin.

The scorching California sun beat down on the sprawling expanse of the Los Angeles Stars' baseball stadium, casting long shadows across the meticulously groomed field. Amongst the buzz of anticipation, Bradley Bradshaw, the newly acquired star pitcher, stepped onto the hallowed ground of the pitcher's mound. His arrival, however, was not without its shadows of doubt and whispers of controversy.
Just months prior, in the heart of Philadelphia, Bradley had been embroiled in a notorious incident that had shattered his reputation. A game-ending brawl erupted after a heated exchange with an opposing batter, ending in a display of unbridled fury that left both dugouts emptied and headlines ablaze. It was a moment of weakness that cost Bradley not only his composure but his place in Philadelphia.
Not that it was entirely Bradley’s fault, of course.
Just hours before game time, he’d walked in on his considerably younger girlfriend, Brittney, and the opposing team’s star hitter, Jordan Kazansky in a compromising position behind the dugout. How else was Bradley supposed to react when he came out smirking at him with a devious grin, knowing exactly what he’d done?
Bradley knew that Brittney was nothing more than a cleat chaser, purely out for the money and her fifteen seconds of fame that would come with dating a professional athlete, and Kazansky had just signed a new deal that promised him an obscene amount to start, and gradual increases each following year.
It shouldn’t have come as a shock to see her getting fucked by another man, especially not one who was younger, paid better, and had a baseball dynasty behind him. And yet, despite all this, seeing her with Jordan Kazansky was enough to make his blood boil.
When Jordan was at bat, Bradley had already managed to strike out two of his teammates, leaving Jordan as New York’s last hope to get a player on base that inning. Bradley lobbed him two relatively easy pitches so far, and the tally sat at two balls, no strikes. A third lazily tossed pitch made it so that the next one could be an easy walk to first base without Kazansky needing to make contact with the ball. Bradley, now feeling a little overly confident about luring his rival into a false sense of security, lined up for the next pitch. Instead of the half-assed, half-hearted throws he’d been sending to the plate, this time, Bradley wound up and threw a fastball that easily clocked in at 95 miles per hour. If aimed differently, this pitch could have set Kazansky up with a home run, however, Bradley, whose temper was rising every second that he spent having to stare at the opposing player, aimed the ball squarely at Kazansky’s outer thigh.
Jordan Kazansky dropped to the ground in a matter of seconds, clutching at the spot where the ball made contact. Bradley took his glove off and threw it to the ground, storming over to where Kazansky was now kneeling in the dirt.
“That’s for fucking my girlfriend,” He spat, shaking his head as he loomed over Kazansky.
Bradley grinned down at the injured player by his feet, raising his eyebrow as Kazansky refused to retaliate. Bradley was seeing red, beyond any reasonable amount of anger, and as the umpire began to attempt to diffuse the situation unfolding, Bradley’s aggression worsened. Now, as other players began to emerge from the dugouts, arguing and brawling with one another, Kazansky stood up right, squaring off with Bradley. Bradley couldn’t help but laugh - at 6 ft 4 and weighing in at about 210lbs, he wasn’t small by any stretch of the imagination, and compared to Kazansky’s 5 ft 10in, 175lbs frame, he practically engulfed the player in his shadow. As Kazansky tried and failed to land a right hook to Bradley’s jaw, Bradley returned the punch with one of his own, making contact with Kazansky’s face.
Now, faced with a game ejection, a fine, and a disciplinary hearing, Bradley knew one thing was for certain - his career was fucked. At his early thirties, most players his age are facing retirement, and on the higher end of 32, at any point the season he’s playing could be his last. He knew it better than anyone - the threat of a forced retirement hanging over him like a guillotine, waiting to end his career. Sure, plenty of players end up doing sports commentary when they leave, but Bradley wasn’t a commentator. In fact, Bradley barely spoke when forced to take part in press conferences, and when he did speak, he read whatever the team’s reps had handed to him. The truth was, he didn’t give a shit about anything outside of the field.
Bradley’s one saving grace after this incident? Pete Mitchell, the general manager of the Los Angeles Stars, a relatively new team that was entering its third season in the league. Pete had begun as Bradley’s coach when Bradley was a rookie, and was one of the few members of the team personnel at the time who believed in his skill and ability, rather than fearing whatever outlashing might occur if someone made a bad call against him.
When Philadelphia put Bradley up for trade following the Kazansky incident, as the press dubbed it, Pete snatched his contract up faster than the ink could dry. Bradley, grateful for the last-chance effort from Pete, resolved to try his hardest to pull his shit together and play the game. That was, until Pete gave Bradley an ultimatum.
“I don’t need a babysitter,” Bradley huffed, shaking his head.
“The league says you do. The team owners say you do. And, most importantly, I say you do. Besides, she’s not a babysitter. She’s not here to make you lunch and wipe your ass, Bradley. She’s here to help you boost your image. Fix that reputation you’ve earned yourself. Maybe even get you traded to a team that can afford to pay you more for your last seasons.”
“I don’t need her help, Pete. I’m fully capable.”
“It’s not up for discussion, Bradley. The team owners have decided you do this with Emily’s help, or you don’t play. And I don’t know about you, but something tells me after you knocked Kazansky out, there’s not a lot of teams interested in adding you to the roster at the moment.”
Bradley sighed and looked out the window of Pete’s office, staring down at the baseball diamond below. He shook his head before darting his eyes back to Pete, giving him a look of pure defeat.
“Fine. When do I meet her?”
“There’ll be a team meeting to introduce her at around 2 o’clock, ahead of tomorrow’s big game.”
“Great, fantastic, wonderful, can’t fucking wait,” Bradley quipped, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Bradley,” Pete sighed as he put a hand out, gesturing to Bradley to keep himself calm, “listen, she’s just here to help you make sure you don’t throw what’s left of your career away.”
Pitch after pitch, Bradley was in the zone, laser-focused on his performance in today’s game to distract himself from his first encounter with Emily earlier that afternoon.
She stood tall, her blonde hair cascading into a messy ponytail, wisps framing her face in a way that suggested effortless beauty. Her green eyes scanned the team with a confidence that Bradley sensed was a façade, a shield to protect her vulnerability.
As she began introducing herself, each mention of the team felt like a veiled criticism directed at him. Bradley couldn't help but scoff and roll his eyes, recognizing the subtle digs concealed within her words. He felt under attack with each thinly veiled criticism of his behaviour, his jaw clenching in frustration as he listened to her talk. With a silent challenge in his gaze, Bradley contemplated how he could make her job a living hell if he so chose.
Watching from the management box in the stadium, stood Emily, in her tailored khaki pants and her pale blue blouse, nervously biting at her fingernails as she watched Bradley’s game play. This afternoon’s introduction to the team she’d be overseeing could have gone better - in fact, there wasn’t many ways in which it could have gone worse.
Despite her outward appearance of confidence when she entered the locker room, Emily couldn't shake the nerves that fluttered in her stomach as she stood amidst the buzzing energy of the stadium. Assigned to handle Bradley Bradshaw's notorious temper, she had expected their first encounter to be tense, but the reality surpassed even her apprehensions. Each eye roll and scoff from Bradley felt like a personal affront, a reminder of the uphill battle she faced in gaining his cooperation. Yet, beneath her frustration simmered a determination born from years of hard work and perseverance.
Emily hadn't landed the position of PR rep for the Los Angeles Stars by chance. Graduating top of her class with a degree in communications, she had diligently climbed the ranks through internships and assistant positions, her eyes always fixed on her ultimate goal. When the opportunity to join the Stars' organization arose after a successful internship there the previous summer, Emily seized it with unwavering confidence, although she had no idea exactly what the position would involve.
She’d entered into her initial meeting with Pete and the rest of the team’s management with her head held high, feeling excited about her new role with the team. She’d been a baseball fan her entire life, and Pete Mitchell was at one time, one of the greats. The team’s roster was phenomenal, filled with rookies and a few veteran players with strong, solid careers. The task of making the team appear well managed was one that practically did itself for her. That was, until that morning, when the team’s newest trade acquisition was finalized.
“Bradley Bradshaw? The guy who drilled someone in the leg over, quote unquote, “fucking his girlfriend”?” She asked incredulously, blinking in disbelief.
“That’d be the one. Listen, we need a good pitcher. He’s one of the best. And we can afford him. He needs us as much as we need him. Your job, is to make sure he keeps his nose clean and doesn’t explode and throw a bat at someone for looking at him the wrong way.”
“Which will now be exponentially harder given his recent scandal. I mean, everyone in the league is commenting on it. On the subway in this morning I heard four different people discussing the Kazansky incident as if it’s the next Watergate scandal.”
“Exactly,” Pete nodded, pointing to Emily with his pen casually, “And you’re one of the best at what you do. Your resume was the most impressive out of all the ones we received. I’m confident you can handle this.”
Emily nodded once, trying not to audibly groan at the prospect of having to babysit a 30-something year old grown man who couldn’t keep his temper tantrums under control.
That night, she’d resorted to watching videos of Bradley in press junkets on the internet, trying to make notes of key points to work on. His uninterested answers, his unwillingness to maintain eye contact, his scowling glances and nonchalant posture, suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but there. A couple videos, dating back to when Bradley’s career was just taking off, showed a different side to him - a gentler man who genuinely just enjoyed playing baseball and wanted to be there.
As she watched Bradley's imposing figure on the mound, Emily couldn't help but wonder what had led him to this point. Rumors of his temper tantrums and locker room clashes had preceded him, painting a portrait of a man both fiercely talented and dangerously unpredictable. Emily knew that her success in taming Bradley's fiery spirit would not only define her career but also shape the trajectory of the team's season. She knew she had her work cut out for her when it came to Bradley - he was hard-headed, stubborn, volatile, and explosive - every public relations team’s worst nightmare.
Emily, however, had a plan.

Do not Touch the Glass
Matthias was not expecting his day to start like this. He was rudely awoken by his roommate Fred who promptly told him to pack his bags for a road trip. Matthias was a known push-over when it came to group activities, so he was soon in his roomate's truck along with three other "friends" of his. Natalie, Jordan, and Samantha were their names, and that was all Matthias really knew of them; they were Fred's friends, not his, so his knowledge was limited and he preferred it that way. At least it could net him some shut eye as the trip continued.
A few hours into the trip Matthias awoke to complaints from Natalie about being lost. He took the moment to look out the window and confirm that they were definitely not on their way to Yellowstone, in fact they were in someplace that could only be called Wilderness to a city boy like him. Evidence of past houses were passed by, but Matthias couldn't tell if this was a reassurance or a stressor.
Soon they parked the car and got out. What Matthias first saw was a field of thickets and dead grass, but after walking around the car to the others he saw it: The Calico Carnival. The entrance to a massive amusement park that had been burnt down a long time ago, but the entrance still stood up, looming ominously above the group, the wooden cat mascot mural leering down from its burnt view. Fred explained that he wanted to explore the place since it was abandoned, and that since he had the keys on him, they had no choice but to oblige.
As they approached the ticket counter, they were all surprised to see a woman, about age 67, working the till. With a croak in her voice she called out almost robotically, "5 per ticket." Natalie, a known prankster (at least from what Fred told Matthias), strolled up and handed a fake $25 bill, which the worker snatched and examined. After a tense moment she could be heard opening the register. "Submit bags for check. Entry ticket will be found attached to bag in your cubby to your immediate left." One by one the group submitted their backpacks and purses and entered; as Matthias was handing his over, the lady sharply grabbed his wrist. "Leave now young man, escape your fate while I am still here." Matthias faltered and the woman grumbled before takin his backpack. As Matthias entered he could hear the shutter of her til as it closed.
As Matthias fully stepped in he could see the park stutter to life. Lightbulbs flickered as the filament struggled to light, the wafting of carnival foods began to fill his nose, and the Ferris Wheel in the distance could be seen slowly starting up as the speakers groaned to life, playing discordant theme park music. His "friends" had already scattered, visiting the locals that interested them. Matthias found himself wandering around aimlessly, until he found the tank.
Off to the side of the park was a large glass tank, easily 8 ft by 8ft. The water was murky, and full of algae and moss. An old, tattered sign reading "See What Came From the Green Lagoon!" stood nearby, barely legible after going through the wringer of elements.
"Well look what the pussy found, an old tank. Of course you'd be wasting time looking in a mirror," came a sneering voice from behind. Matthias grimaced. Out of all of Fred's friends he loathed Jordan. Jordan was a piece of shit who knew how to manipulate people to get what he wanted, and Fred was oblivious to how he was consistently being taken advantage of by him. Jordan began tapping on the tank, and was about to crack off another joke.
"Sammy doesn't like being disturbed." The two men turned around to find a young male with white rabbit ears peering out from behind a stack of crates. "Please stop tapping on the glass."
"Oh yeah? Well I'm a paying customer," Jordan complained, eliciting a sigh from Matthias. "So I can do whatever the FUCK I want twerp. The rabbit-eared individual sighed before pulling his ears down to hide behind them.
"There's a latch at the top to stick your hand in," he mumbled. Jordan cheered before doing just that. As Matthias watched in disappointment, he heard the rabbit-guy speak up to him. "Did you know Tabitha poured a potion in Sammy's tank, and it restored his years? He stopped aging when he joined like all of us, but the potion gave him back the years, meaning I need to get a present for a 27-year-old... Do you know anything good?"
His question fell on deaf ears as Matthias stopped processing what he was asking or the nonsense said before. However, the age stuck with him. 27? But the guy on the poster looks barely in his young adulthood. Then the thing in the tank-
A scream from Jordan snapped him out of his thinking as Jordan began to scream that his fingers were gone. Then Jordan got pulled further, his whole arm stuck in the slot of the tank that the usagi talked about. Jordan screamed and shouted and cursed before managing to free himself and land on the ground, his left arm missing and spurting blood. Then the lid of the tank slammed open and he emerged.
A man, approximately of 27 years of age slowly climbed out. He had green, partially scaly skin covered in important areas by tattered clothing scraps. He was slightly hunched over but would have at least stood at an easy 6'5. His body radiated raw power, his muscles tensing and easing with each breath. His eyes practically glowed an eerie yet enchanting yellow, encapsulated by the kelp or algae stuck in his tangled hair. As he stepped forward with his webbed feet he snarled, revealing his sharp and bloodied mouth. Without giving Jordan a chance, he dove down and began to tear at his neck while his clawed hands tore into Jordan's chest, creating a cavity of gore.
Matthias stumbled before booking it, not wanting to see Sammy feast on someone he knew, even if the guy deserved it. Matthias ran back to the entrance just as the shutters began to finish lowering. "Thank you for purchasing your overnight stay tickets," the loudspeaker system crackled to life. "We hope you enjoy a happy and fun time with the other eleven who purchased their tickets prior." To add to this, the park's walls suddenly rose higher, making it near impossible to scale out. Matthias felt panic in his heart as he tried to think about what next. He came to the conclusion that maybe someone could help him out of here, like that bunny-eared guy! But of course, he didn't want to die like Jordan did. A quick scan of the trash near him allowed Matthias to fish out a moldy map of the park. Using the nearest street lamp he was able to make out a few locations to pick from.
Threat Level: Low Remaining Survivors: 15/16 Injuries: none Mental state: Disturbed.

Edna's Apprentice AU One-shot first draft
Somehow Kari, Violet, and Jordan are all on a small plane (luckily a tricycle style) and the auto pilot goes off. Jordan as the only one with even a sum total of thirty minutes flying a plane is the one who is now piloting. Kari is getting ahold of Mrs. Parr, so maybe she can help Jordan. Violet is busy focusing on how to time making a forcefield to protect the bottom of the plan during landing without it affecting aerodynamics while Jordan tries to land.
“You can't fly a plane! you only have a half hour of experience!”
“You think I don't know that, Kari? but at the moment that's a half hour more experience than anyone else on the plane. Violet your mom can fly right? can you try to call her?”
“What? oh, yeah, yeah I can call my mom.”
*there's a pause as the phone rings and Violet's mom picks up*
“Violet, what's up, you don't usually call in the middle of the day?” Violet freezes up for a moment, how do you explain to your mom that you're about to crash a plane?
“put her on speaker,” Violet does, “Hi Mrs. Parr, this is Jordan, I was wondering if you could walk me through landing a plane. I sorta know how to in theory, but also I'm kinda freaking out a bit.”
“I'm sorry? you're trying to do what?!”
“Land a plane, long story, tell you later, but I do kinda need to know now, I'm in a five passenger high wing with fixed tricycle landing gear. We're at ________ ft, and descending to the runway in a minute, I've managed to contact ATC, Kari is taking care of the pilot, and we're landing on Edna's strip. What do I do?”
Mrs. Parr takes a deep breath, she can freak out about this later.
“Okay. Here's what you do.” She talks Jordan through the landing. She is informed that Kari is keeping the cargo and pilot stable. She hears the moment that Violet takes a breath mimicking hers and Violet's next words are steady and determined. (That's the moment that she's sure they're coming home) She hears the whoops after they land, and she's happy she's recorded this whole call when she hears Jordan yell,
“Thank you Mrs. Parr!” with joyous disbelief.
The second they hang up Helen is in the car and driving to Edna's. She couldn't risk being that distracted on the road or being distracted on that call. She makes it to Edna's house in ten minutes, which is apparently just enough time for the kids to manage to get out of the plane.
As expected the landing gear is just completely gone, but Violet's force fields held, so there isn't much damage to the fuselage. Without landing gear the plane did gently tip to the side when it landed, so they all have to awkwardly climb out of the door on the other side at an angle.
All of the kids were leaning on each other as they left the plane (Helen decides not to comment on it, its probably the only reason that they're all still standing despite the fact that they all look unharmed.) There were the authorities and first responders there for the actual pilot, and someone gets the cargo that was what the whole (rather impromptu) mission was about.
The kids are laughing, but they're also shaking, and Helen knows they're just riding out the adrenaline, and this is one of those times where you can laugh or cry and they're all still there, so they're laughing. She gives them a moment and then walks over.
“Are you kids all okay? I know you landed fine, but you still should get looked over.”
“Mom!” “Mrs. Parr!” “Mrs. Parr!” All three kids yell greetings over each other as they notice her for the first time.
Violet is the first to break away, and all but tackle her mother. Kari is quick to join the group hug, but Jordan holds back a bit. Helen supposes that makes sense as Jordan hasn't known her as long. She waves them over, and they join the group hug too.
“I crashed a plane, holy shit I crashed an actual plane, and we're all still alive.” Helen isn't totally sure that Jordan knows they're mumbling into her shoulder, but there are certainly worse ways to process this.
“You landed a fucking plane with no experience,” Kari's voice leaves no room for argument.
“Violet kept us from actually blowing up. By the way, you pulled that off marvelously.”
“Thanks,” Violet mumbles into Helen's shoulder. She lets them all just stay in the hug for a minute.
“Alright, do you think you all can make it inside. I'll make you all some tea, and you can tell me all about what happened today, or not. How does that sound?” Helen offers.
She gets general noises of assent from the teenagers, so she starts to move towards Edna's building. It's definitely a bit of a walk, but all of the kids seem to be far more emotionally drained than physically exhausted, and they'd do well with well with a little bit of a walk to help shake off all the adrenaline.
They all make it inside, and the teens start making tea before Helen can. Edna has joined them all in the kitchen, but lets the kids be.
They are on autopilot, calming down with their usual routine. Kari putting water on while Jordan puts sugar and honey in the cups according to who likes what as Violet pulls out three tea bags. Kari gets orange tea with a lot of honey, Violet likes chamomile lavender with a little bit of sugar, and Jordan gets mint with the slightest bit of honey.
It strikes Helen that the three of them have definitely done this before. They move like this is something they do anytime there are things too big to talk about. She wonders if they do this to help each other with the stress of school tests as well as the stresses of being involved in the crazy world of crime fighting.
It doesn't matter either way, she muses, not if they are taking care of each other so well.
“So, are you three able to talk about it right now?” Helen asks. She keeps her voice soft, so they know they have a choice.
“It all started at the fashion convention.” Jordan begins, “We were attending, and everything was normal, and Violet and Kari were letting me drag them all over and look at everything.”
Jordan takes a sip of the now brewed tea.
“And then I recognized the logo for Bomboyage. I told Violet, and we all went to lunch to make a plan.” Jordan gives Kari and Violet a look silently asking one of them to take over. Kari keeps the story going.
“We did a little bit of digging, and figured that he was probably trying to target Extraordinary's vault. They are one of the other big companies that does tech for supers. They manufacture it all though, so nothing is as high quality as what happens here.
'All of their designs are known for having weak spots, so the plan was to get the blueprints, and destroy every super using their stuff.” Kari and Violet share a glance. Honestly only really Violet knows what happens next.
“I went invisible and followed him to the vault. I was able to stop him and turn him over to the authorities, but he wasn't the only villain at the event.
'__________ was selling some high quality crystals that would be useful for the buyer, __________. The swatches could be used to further the engineering of the lasers that they use frequently.” Violet takes a sip of her tea as well. Honestly Helen wishes she was surprised that they all managed to find so much trouble.
“We managed to secure the crystals, but the longer we stayed the more likely it was that something could go wrong.” Violet continues, “So we made some calls, and Mr. Dicker was able to get us in touch with Jake, our pilot. Mr. Dicker said that we needed to make it back here as soon as possible, so we got to the airport quickly, and met Jake there.”
“Everything was fine, the flight was going great, no one had tried to stop us, and then Jake started shaking. He seemed to seize or something, we don't really know. Jordan told Violet to see if she could get him out of the pilot's seat.” Kari continued.
“I was already in one of the front seats, so I could mostly keep us on course and in the air, but it would be much easier with another conscious person up front with me.” Jordan adds.
“Right, so Violet managed to get him into the back and move up while I checked him over. I think he seized. He was conscious fairly quickly, but wasn't super coherent, I don't know what happened.”
“I got Violet to figure out what heading I needed to maintain, and which frequency to use to call emergency ATC. We contacted them, explained what was happening, and set course for Edna's landing strip. After we had that sorted, I asked Violet to call you, so I could ask what to do, and well, you know the rest from there.” Jordan finishes the story.
Helen glances at Edna. She honestly isn't sure what to make of the whole thing. Edna looks like she's calculating what the best response is. Edna's face settles on quietly proud.
“Well, I'm glad you're alright.” Helen ends up saying. She is actually quite concerned about a good many things, but the kids don't need her to freak out on them right now. That can wait until she's home with Bob and all of the teenagers are asleep.
“I think some rest is in order, you all have had a stressful couple of days.”

Hours-long Power Outage Affects Over 1000 South Jordan Residents
Power outages happen for various reasons, such as severe weather like storms or strong winds that damage power lines or equipment. Sometimes, accidents like car crashes or construction work can also cause outages. To prevent power outages, power companies work hard to maintain and upgrade their equipment regularly. They trim trees near power lines to prevent branches from causing damage during storms. Installing backup systems, like generators, in critical places such as hospitals and emergency services helps minimize disruptions. Communities can also prepare by having emergency kits with flashlights, batteries, and canned food. By being proactive and maintaining infrastructure, we can reduce the chances of power outages and be better prepared when they occur.

Episode 182 : The People's Music
"I never did a dance for a dollar..."
- Buckshot
This month we don't shift into high gear in terms of tempo at any point, topping out at around 90, so those of you experiencing actual summer don't overheat! We've got some absolutely fire new releases in the mix alongside some versions that you might never have heard, plus some deep album cuts. We start things off with just such a track - if you don't own the album, I'd be willing to bet you've never heard it...never let it be said this is a show that leans on the obvious records!
Still a few tickets left to see Phat Kat at The Hip Hop Chip Shop on August 4th, plus me playing a special Detroit warmup set!

Playlist/Notes
Above The Law ft. Kokane : Rain Be For Rain Bo
RIP KMG, who passed away twelve years ago this month. In a season where we maybe haven't had the sunshine we expected, this seemed like an appropriate choice - a downtempo but funky piece from the well-respected LP "Uncle Sam's Curse", Above The Law's third. Cold 187um not only produced the track but also provides the scene-setting first verse, while his cousin Kokane is on the hook, and KMG's second verse builds on the perfect setup. A lot of people were not ready to digest this LP fully when it came out, but if you have time to take a front-to-back listen, especially if you appreciate the West Coast sound, then do - you'll be rewarded.
Tavaras Jordan : Change, Pt. 2 (The Last Thing)
A beautifully smooth instrumental from this talented Hip-Hop and R&B producer out of North Carolina, taken from his short - but very sweet - 2019 "Manifest Destiny" album. Anything with this man's name on is worth a listen!
GZA : Animal Planet
The streets are a jungle, and nature is gangster. Another in GZA's series of themed tracks that started with "Labels" on "Liquid Swords", this grand-sounding Bink and Tyquan Walker-produced cut from "Legend Of The Liquid Sword" allows the Genius to demonstrate once again how he can build a concept track like few others.
Jay-Z ft. Damian Marley : Bam
One of my good friends always plays this track before job interviews, because these people have to "know who they F'in with", to quote Jay-Z! This collaboration with Damian Marley from the "4:44" LP is one of my personal highlights of that release, and the producer No I.D. goes straight to a reggae classic to provide the raw material, the mighty "Bam Bam" by Sister Nancy.
Black Moon : General Feva
The "Rise Of Da Moon" album, Black Moon's first after a sixteen-year layoff, seemed to go under-appreciated by many, but I for one was very pleased to see the Brooklyn legends release that LP in 2019. Da Beatminerz on production of course, for some slow, loping boom-bap that is a little dark for summer perhaps, but perfect for this slide towards some sandpaper-type roughness.
Cut Beetlez x Bronx Slang : I'm Not Chillin
If the last track was raw, this is the cow still wandering around in the field! Finland's Cut Beetlez production team linked up with the always-NY Bronx Slang for a brand new EP, from which this is the title cut. As soon as Jerry Beeks told me it was out I had it in my headphones and even after repeated listens, I knew this was the track to go with right here! The sonics snarl, thump, and grind, and yet you can hear every word from the MCs, who just seem to keep getting better with time and can give you the business regardless of the pace of the track.
[J-Zone] Al-Shid : Fight Club (Instrumental)
He may be a full-time and high-quality drummer now, but I'll always remember the originality J-Zone brought to Hip-Hop production for so many years. There's no-one who sounded quite like him, and this instrumental of a track from Al-Shid's debut single is a great example - some might say quirky, but in terms of quality, very serious.
Conductor Williams & Boldy James : Flying Trapeze Act
Too many people think that street rap and lyrical creativity can't go together, but this song from the "Across The Tracks" LP by Kansas City producer Conductor Williams and Detroit's Boldy James, thankfully still with us after a serious accident, have both in spades. The Conductor's track clearly treats its original sample in a pretty extreme fashion (you can hear the warbling which the processing likely introduced) but then adds the subtlest of kick-snare to quietly drive it along, and the vocals left in just add extra soulful flavour beneath Boldy's voice. As he moves between straight description, metaphor, and simile - especially the last punchy one in the hook that gives the track its title - Boldy James puts in excellent work.
El Michels Affair ft. Raekwon : The PJs (Instrumental/Vocal)
I needed to lead with the instrumental just to provide a nice bridge in, but it's always a pleasure to hear the brilliant El Michels Affair play! This is a re-recording of the track "The PJs" from Pete Rock's 2008 LP "NY's Finest" - no Masta Killa this time, but Raekwon returns to do his verses over with some small changes. El Michels Affair, in turn, base their instrumental performance around the way Pete Rock worked the original sample, but with some subtle flourishes. "The PJs...From Afar" is a 12" single well worth adding to your collection.
Da Beatminerz ft. Black Moon : Anti
Black Moon again, because why not? This time we go with their appearance on the new Da Beatminerz project "Stifled Creativity" (bearing in mind that Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz is also an actual member of the group) for one of the highlights of the LP. Over a slow, reflective, almost funereal take on the groove best known from Souls of Mischief's "93 'Til Infinity", Buckshot speaks on his journey as an independent artist and label owner (Duck Down) in a straightforward manner while maintaining that trademark flow. To maintain a thirty-plus year independent career through the changes in the industry is quite a feat - salute.
O.C. : This Is Me
This is a track I've always enjoyed, but which I think escaped a lot of people's notice. A selection from the overlooked "Smoke And Mirrors" LP, O.C.'s fifth, it's a track where he speaks on his career-long determination to follow his own path and ignore the trends - in fact, it's spiritually very close to the Beatminerz/Black Moon track that precedes it here. Mike Loe takes a late-70s soul sample, turns the speed up a touch and provides an excellent musical backdrop for the lyrics.
MF DOOM : Dead Bent (Original 12" Instrumental)
If you know the "Operation Doomsday" LP but not this, it would sound like an overstatement to say that the version of "Dead Bent" on the album is a "refined" version of anything, as rough-and-ready as the whole release is, but you can hear that this original is even more beautifully unpolished. Self-produced by the late great DOOM, you can find this not only on the original 12" mentioned in the title, but also on some later reissued versions of the album, containing alternate versions, B-sides, and instrumentals - essential for the DOOM fan.
Dubbul O & Cutterz : Stay Gold
Stellar new release out of Manchester, with this familiar duo (and half of Voodoo Black) headlining their new "Stay Gold" EP with this title track. If you've lost someone close, this one will hit you hard, with Dubbul O's deeply personal lyrics coming through strong over Cutterz' production which is somehow both optimistic and moody at the same time. Definitely check for that five-track EP.
Mecca:83, Phat Kat, and Guilty Simpson : Don't Stop
Exclusive! *Sounds airhorn* Manchester's own Mecca:83 blessed me with a copy of this as-yet unreleased track, with his warm and bumping production backing up two giants of the Detroit scene, Phat Kat and Guilty Simpson. Two cities famous for their industries come together for a great musical union!
Dilated People : The Main Event
I'll be honest - of the three tracks on the classic underground "Work The Angles" 12" single, this is the one I play the least, but the Alchemist-produced middle track on the release (also on 2000's "The Platform" LP) definitely deserves respect. Rakaa Iriscience steps all the way back here and makes space for Evidence to get busy on both verses. The samples of some of the Hip-Hop greats for the hook rounds off the whole package nicely.
Nas & Statik Selektah : Dead Presidence
(That's not my spelling, it's what they printed on the labels of "The Prophecy EP"!) Jay-Z and Ski famously sampled the "presidents that represent me" line from Nas' "The World Is Yours" for "Dead Presidents" on the classic "Reasonable Doubt", but on this track Statik Selektah reverses the game and blends the vocals from the Nas track with Ski's instrumental, and while the original is a flawless cut, these two pieces do fit together beautifully as well.
Marco Polo : Ps & Qs (Remix Instrumental)
MPC magic from Marco Polo, from his entry in the "Baker's Dozen" producer series, with clean drums, a live-sounding bass, and guitar licks placed to perfection.
Camp Lo ft. Jungle Brown : Hold On
I've always loved the way this track ends, and as such thought it needed to be played in a position where that portion can be heard uninterrupted. It's not just the closing track here but also the finisher on the 2009 "Stone And Rob : Caught On Tape" album. Jungle Brown is one of the few MCs to make repeated features with the Lo, and he does his thing alongside the legendary Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede while also co-producing it with Apple Juice Kid. If you're a fan of the group, definitely seek out this release as there are some absolute heaters on there, including the back-to-back of "On Smash" and "89 of Crime".
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

Nowitzki Dallas Mavericks' No. 1 contributor
Nowitzki Dallas Mavericks' No. 1 contributor
Tumblr media
In the 2006-07 season, which was the MVP season, the number of under-the-goal shots was 260 and the number of short field shots of about 3 to 10 feet was 116, while the number of 10 to 16 ft mid-range shots was 363 and the number of long 2 field shots inside the 16 ft to 3 point line was 504. The number of three-point attempts is 192 times, which is more than the number of short field attempts. If you look at the Yatu Sido chart, it is not a power forward but a shooting guard.
What is the success rate of under-the-goal shots in the 2006–07 season? It is quite sluggish compared to Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, who shot around 70% of the monsters like LeBron James at 603, as well as mid-60% to 70%. The short field throw success rate was .409, which was a failure for a power forward. But the medium-range success rate.500! Long 2 success rate. The success rate of 504 and 3-point shots is .416, which shows threatening shooting performance as the distance from the rim increases. Nobitsky's fieldwork success rate in the 2010-11 season, the winning season, was 51.7%, a career-high record, 54.9% before taking nine games off due to injury in December. Considering that he is not just an insider, but a player who uses mid- and long-range shots as his main weapon, it is an amazing record. In addition, Nobitsky is a player who has once joined 180 clubs, a sacred place for elite shooters.
If you look at the analysis by ESPN Sport Science, you will understand why this is a fraud. What should I do with a shot that cannot be blocked even if a player with Yao's height jumps as much as Derek Rose? It's a bonus to defend with your knees when you shoot fade away.
It's already a high RBI that's hard to prevent, but he even uses Faderway. Usually, the shooting distance is long for a player, but it's only two points if you go in, so it's enough to say that there was no luck. But it keeps going in. From the opposing team's point of view, they have no choice but to be upset. Even if Markman does a contest half-heartedly, he chews everything and goes in. The nickname Sagatsky comes from this fraudulent shooting ability. However, if you enter a double team, you can keep your view and spray the ball to your open-chance teammate. In addition, at an important moment when such a shot is cornered, even in a clutch situation where a reversal or a tie is at stake, it is inevitable that it is a fraud.
On top of that, even free throws are good. Of course, the number of free throws he gets is small for a big man, but he has several seasons exceeding 90 percent and has a career success rate of 87 percent, ranking seventh in career free throws. Therefore, it cannot be cut off by foul.
We can't leave out the story of Nobitsky's signature technology, ONE LEGGED FADEAWAY, which is a featherway shot that shoots with one leg raised while taking steps while hitting face-up or post-up. In Korea, the form of shooting a shot is somewhat similar to a crane, so it is usually called Hakdari Way. Technically, Michael Jordan's turnaround Faderway saved the ridiculously high physical strength that gave him the nickname "Air Jordan," and Nowitzki's Faderway showed off his big height and arm length. In addition, it is difficult to prevent it because it also serves as a defense in case of attack with raised legs, and it is virtually impossible to prevent it even if you know it. Maybe that's why Nowitzki himself says this technology is a white version of Skyhook. Aside from the considerable power of the technology, other players tend to use it a lot. The most famous players are Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.
His shooting ability stands out in clutch situations. In fact, there are many highlights made only by Novitzki's reversal shot on YouTube.
The reason why Nobitsky is strong in a clutch situation is the same reason why Long 2 is consistently used even though it is an inefficient shot. In terms of defense concentration and field pitching rate, Long 2 is the least difficult place to try to shoot on the basketball court. Outside the three-point line, the defense concentration is the lowest and the score is the highest, but the success rate is low, and the atu rate is high in the net, but it is difficult to penetrate the defense. Of course, as the hand-checking rules were revised and the players' three-point shooting ability developed, expectations for under-the-goal scores and three-point shots increased, and Long 2 decreased its position as it became more inefficient shooting. However, it is different in clutch situations. Even if it does not go to the last-minute one-shot play, if the opposing team sticks to its defense, it is difficult to create a three-point opportunity with team tactics or go under the net in a playoff situation where fouls are more salty than usual. For this reason, a team without a clear ace who can squeeze points with individual abilities is weaker in the playoffs than the team's performance.
However, Long 2, which has a low defensive density, is an important option in a situation where every single clear score is disappointing. Not to mention a last-minute one-shot play. In this situation, most of the shots are tough shots that are kept in check because there are few open shots or chances to break through under the net. Therefore, the three clutch points are difficult to try and the success rate is even lower. Long 2 is the best option in situations when the score is urgently squeezed with the ace's ability without having time to devise team tactics.
High-screen completeness is close to perfection. In addition, in the early days of his debut, he continued to be pointed out for defense, but after repeated efforts, he did not become a hole in one-on-one defense.
He has scored 25.4 points and 10.2 rebounds in 140 playoff games, with Bob Pettitte, Elgin Baylor, Hakeem Olajuwon and Nowitzki the only retired players to average more than 25 points and 10 rebounds in their playoff careers. In addition, he is tied for first place with Michael Jordan with 36 times of 30 points and 0 turnovers.
Looking at Nobitsky's slow performance in his later years, he can be considered a typical slow and good white big man, but compared to his height of 213cm, he has good speed and excellent dribbling ability. For this reason, they use a shot as a fake and then score through a breakthrough. Strangely, it is sometimes misunderstood that the athletic ability is not good, but in fact, among the players of the time, he was the highest-speed player compared to his class height.

Back in 1996, Martin was playing with the Los Angeles Clippers and shot an abysmal 0-8 from the field. Looking further back in history, the man that might have had the most impressive scoring performance without making a single field goal was Darrick Martin. Most recently it was Josh Okogie who shot 0-2 from the field but 10-11 from the FT line to help the Wolves win a game 114-112 against the Blazers on March 14 th, 2021.

Dozens of players of the years have put up 10+ points in an NBA game while making nothing but free throws. While not common in the NBA, it is also not unheard of for a player to score double-digit points without ever making a field goal. He was also a contestant on an episode of the game show series Wanna Bet?. Hamilton explained the topic "moving without the ball" to shake off your defender. In the 2006–07 NBA season Hamilton appeared in the NBA Fundamentals series, hosted by TNT, where basketball players showcase certain aspects of the game. On February 26, 2015, Hamilton officially announced his retirement from the NBA on ESPN program His & Hers. The Wizards improved but failed to make the playoffs with a 37-45 record, and Hamilton averaged 20 points a game for the season while finishing second in the league in free throw percentage, shooting 89 percent from the free throw line. Despite a successful start to the season, injuries limited Jordan to just 60 games, while Hamilton also played in just 63 games but solidified his role as the team's starting shooting guard. In the offseason, Michael Jordan announced that he would return to the court for the Wizards, while also hiring Doug Collins to coach the team. The Wizards could not improve however, and won just 19 games for the season. The following year proved to be a breakout season for Hamilton, as he played more at the small forward position and started in 42 of 78 games and doubled his scoring average to 18.1 points a game. The season also marked the addition of Michael Jordan to the franchise, who took over as part owner and President of Basketball Operations The Wizards only managed to win 29 games however and failed to make the playoffs. In his rookie season, he played in 71 games with 12 starts and averaged 9 points a game backing up veteran shooting guard Mitch Richmond. Hamilton was selected with the 7th pick in the 1999 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards.

Before the full Lay of Leithian cast is announced and I can go "haha I knew it" here's my prediction for Finrod (in case it's not Alexander Rychkov. I'm not ready for someone else in the role yet): Konstantin Skripalev.
Tumblr media
This was the cast announcement for the 28 April show (which ended up being cancelled), and he's played Namo/Mandos before. The silhouette displayed on their VK page fits his appearance, I think.

Tumblr media
sm: it started off work friendly with honest attempts … truly, but who could really blame you.
ft: mute, lion, jager, thermite
a/n: it started off with finally seeing lion’s face and spiraled to this. im sorry. (signed a spiteful lion main in ranked)
Tumblr media
MUTE never liked you at first. you were too socially inclined, too friendly, too loud. sure you knew when to shut up during an operation, but off the field? he knew more than he wanted about your personal life.
where you vacationed as a kid.
your favorite color.
the name of the family cat who bit you-
actually what was its name again?
a rough, but firm hold takes grip of your hair, fisting you away from the sheets you’d ruined with your sobbing. the room was once again brought to life by the sounds of you. a beautiful symphony to the orchestra of his hips smacking against the back of your thighs and the bed creaking beneath your combined weight.
“that stupid cat you hated, what was his name again?”
your brow pinched, eyes barely visible between tight lids as you grit your teeth against the onslaught of his undulations.
poor thing.
a sharp hiss broke through your warbled cries as he jerked your head back again, lips heating your ear as he repeated the question. it was the most sensitive, sensual interrogation you’d ever experienced.
the worst part is, he knew how difficult of a task it was for you when you got so deliriously drunk on the feel of him. shame that such a trained operative could be reduced to such a mess.
the worse than that, was that you weren’t even sure what awaited you on the other side of his question.
would he reward you or was this just a taste of another game ?
the next thrust was so deep that it kissed your sanity.
“samson!”
who knew that damned cat would still haunt you in the afterlife.
mark released you and you fell back against the damp sheets. his hips slowed to an almost inquisitive pace as his calloused thumb caressed your back. his hardness remained uncaring to the sensitive stretch of your walls.
“you told me about the time you got lost in monaco once, remind me again. ”
if you’d known then how those mindless attempts to bridge the gap would have brought you to this head-
maybe you would have told simpler stories.
THERMITE had to have thought long and hard about this prior. practically planned the whole trip around this moment. you’d been to distracted to notice the signs, consumed with impressions and meeting his family. for what it was worth, jordan was an exceptional actor and organizer.
he disarmed your tension with light touches, slowly unraveled your nerves by guiding you from one conversation to the next.
at the end of the night, you were too grateful to notice the way he eagerly lead you to his childhood room after the talking settled. too wrapped up in kisses to acknowledge the way he had you stripped and bare before you’d even got his shirt off.
“fuck… been dreaming about this.”
jordan was a man possessed and drunk off the sight of you splayed out on his sheets. his parents had since transformed his old room into guest quarters. gone was the old furniture but the memorability and ambiance remained the same. he’d gotten you here and that was all that mattered.
he regretted that he couldn’t paint the walls with your cries of pleasure, but the visual of you twisting the sheets with both your mouth and fist- desperate not to ruin the moment by getting you caught.
well that would just have to be his prize.
what a settlement.
his thumbs eased circles onto the roundness of your hips, a loving caress before those same blotched fingers pinched and pulled against the fat to draw you back harder into his thrusts. your quiet whimpers really were nothing compared to the creaking bed and lewd smacks.
but jordan really couldn’t give a shit. he was home and he was going to enjoy it.
LION didn’t want to like you. he had enough on his plate, plenty of the past to still work out. so much of himself to evaluate and improve. and his son.
his mother may have moved on, introduced a new figure into their child’s life but that didn’t mean olivier was ready.
and neither were you to be honest.
you both lived lives that weren’t promised. today could be monday, but that didn’t mean you were guaranteed a tuesday. it was even harder to enjoy the ones that you did, or at least the parts that weren’t gunfire and claymores.
this wasn’t about love or it settling down.
it was a means to end to cut through the carnage.
so you don’t think about wedding bells and nights in front of the fireplace what the flat of his palm presses you down between your shoulder blades. the man knows he’s big, which is why he takes you this way, always leaning back to watch your thighs spasm and shake. you’ve caught him on more then one occasion watching entranced as he slowly slides into your sex.
it’s not emotional sex but there are a lot of print up ‘emotions’ driving the heat of it. you’ve convinced yourself that it’s completely normal to seek each other out blindly after a mission, utilizing any empty room or surface. despite denying the underlying whatever it was building, it was surprisingly easy to ignore the commonplace forming between you.
evident in the way the two of you stand comfortably side by side. shoulders brushing without acknowledgment. a few brows raise but no one says anything.
especially him when he holds you close in the early threads of the morning, sweat slicked and sticky with come. you’re drowsy and in no position to get up and leave. he slips his softening cock nestled within you, if only to remind himself of why he’s here.
JAGER believes in all or nothing. he lacks to social grace to risk tiptoeing through fragile ‘labels’. he’d make a terrible ballerina anyway. it’s not as if he’s looking to settle per say, but he’s old enough to appreciate living this long in his career. when he accepts you into his bed, only you know it’s warmth and the way one pillow is noticeably flatter than the others.
marius is a tentatively tender lover at first. learning where to touch and how to grab. he’s throughout, though, leaving you sated with just his fingers and cock.
but he’s a thinker, inquisitive on all the ways something can be improved and you’re no exception. the first time he puts his mouth on you? marius nearly had to tap out against your thighs as they constricted around him.
his tongue had no business being that good. and that boyish, knowing grin … he would be your premature death. he makes quite an effort to get you to be the one to tap out. waist squirming against his hold as he alternated between kitten licks and swipes of his thumb against your sensitive hole. the man had mapped you out entirely, aware of the slightest edge needed to make you crumble.
he isn’t a very vocal lover, but he grunts appreciatively whenever you tug his hair or meeting him just right on on a downward thrust. thoroughly enjoys kissing you, sliding his mouth from your lips to your neck and back again. never seems to lose breath despite his pace as he imprints his taste against your tongue.
for someone who holds his words, the man is very good with his mouth.

The Azoff Family: A Case Study on one of the Music Industry’s Most Connected Families
(ft. a breakdown of the Grammy voting process and problems)
This is very long so I will try and split it up into categories for everyone (sorry I got carried away- I spent like 2 hours writing this) but enjoy!
*Disclaimer: I want to preface while the majority of this is based in research, some parts may be speculation. I don’t know the family personally so I can’t tell you what goes on behind closed doors but I can tell you how parts of the entertainment/music industry work. I’ve had 5 internships in the industry (one in marketing at one of the big record labels) and the rest of my work is publicity (what I enjoy) and events and a former advisor used to run in the same circles as Irving Azoff (and he spilled some tea last year) I’m not out here to diminish the hard work of any artists or their teams, I’m simply here to showcase parts of the industry that aren’t always shown.*

IRVING AZOFF: NEVER STOP THE GRIND
Let’s begin with the great business man himself Mr. Irving Azoff Irving Azoff is the literal posture child for connections and power in the music industry (he was also inducted into the 2020 rock and roll hall of fame class which is like a huge fucking deal for a manager to be inducted so you know he's the real deal)
In conclusion, I love Irving Azoff and his drive.
Irving Azoff: Early Years Run Down:
He came up middle class (dad was a pharmacist, mom a bookkeeper) in Danville, Illinois
He dropped out of college to run a small Midwestern concert-booking empire and managed local acts in the era
Opportunity came knocking and he got the chance to manage the Eagles and the rest is history
He's one of the best negotiators and has negotiated business on behalf of stars like Stevie Nicks, the Eagles, and Jimmy Buffet
Azoff has been an incredible manager and his drive to always advocate for his clients while basically not giving two sh*ts about what people think of him has gotten him the incredible reputation he has today.
All of Irving Azoff’s Major Job Positions:
Former President MCA (major label)
Former CEO of Ticketmaster and executive chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, the behemoth formed from Ticketmaster’s merger with Live Nation.
In 2013 he and Cablevision Systems Corp. CEO and New York Knicks owner James Dolan formed a partnership, Azoff MSG Entertainment (Currently still CEO)
----> Azoff also ran the Forum in Inglewood under Azoff MSG Entertainment after MSG purchased it in 2012 (it was sold in 2020 to the owner of the Clippers) — why do you think Harry played the forum for the Fine Line show? Azoff connection
Azoff MSG Entertainment encompasses all of the other companies including Full Stop Management, Global Music Rights (performance-rights org), and the Oak View Group (arena developing company)
He also is the co-founder and manager of the lobbying group Music Artists Coalition, a group that helps lobby for artists-rights issues such as royalty rates, copyright issue and healthcare insurance (see he's not all bad)
Essentially what I'm getting at is this man knows anybody who's anybody. He's the man you want on your team to help promote your music, plan your tour, and get you on that Grammy nom list.

JEFFREY AZOFF: THE CHILD OF NEPOTISM
So for those of you that don't know, Jeffery Azoff is Harry's current manager and the son of Irving Azoff (the third of four kids). He's currently a partner at Full Stop Management, the company owned by Irving and the one artists such as Harry, Haim, the Eagles, Kings of Leon, and Meghan Trainer are signed to.
Jeffrey graduated from the University of Colorado's Leeds School of Business and started working fresh out of college at his father's old Management company (Frontline Management) working under Maroon 5's manager Jordan Feldstein (the only way you get that kind of internship/job as a 21 year old fresh out of college is if your family or family friends gives it to you). He worked here for 5 years.
Direct Quote from Irving Azoff to Jeffrey (really tells you a lot): "Listen carefully, because I’m going to say this one time. You have a phone and you have my last name. If you can’t figure it out, you’re not my son."
After working for his father, Jeffrey moved on to the talent agency CAA (Creative Artist Agency) where he worked for roughly 3 and half years before joining his dad in forming Full Stop Management in 2016.
While he was at CAA, Irving moved over clients like Christina Aguilera and the Eagles to the talent agency to help with tour booking instead of doing it internally through LiveNation (he was CEO).
Even though I'm sure Jeff has had to work somewhat hard to get to where he is (or at least to mess up his dad's work as he doesn't seem like the type to take laziness well), the door into the industry and every job was basically handed to him on a silver platter.
Not to mention if you watch episodes of keeping up with the  kardashians (like myself) you can actually see Jeff hanging out with kendall and the rest of the fam at their Palm Springs house (you know you're a nepotism kid if you have an in with the Kardashian crew). Invite me next time Jeffrey!!!
Think of the Azoff's as the mafia family of the music industry, you don't mess with the mafia

THE GRAMMY AWARDS: STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS ON STEROIDS
Ok so here's where we’re going to get into a bit more of the speculation/grey area. I don't need to tell you that award shows are corrupt (See the Golden Globes Emily in Paris scandal) and the Grammys are not an exception. Think of the Grammys as one big student council/government elections where despite the fact the teachers tell you six times to vote for the best candidate, you're still going to vote for your friends even if they aren't the best.
A simplified break-down of Grammy voting:
1) Recording Academy voting members (artists, producers, musicians- anyone involved first hand with the creation of music; All voting members must have been producers, performers or engineers on six or more tracks of a commercially released album (or 12 or more digital tracks) and record labels will submit nominations in various categories to the grammys (songs need to be released commercially between October 1 of the previous year and September 30th of this year). You can also become a voting member by either winning a grammy or being endorsed by a current voting member (hint hint)
2) Once received, the recording academy with have the academy of trustees and its reviewers organize them and approve any changes to the 30 categories/fields (aka they can add new categories or remove old ones; so no best ukulele album of the year -- this is where things get funky)
There's speculation that during this stage when these special groups of 8-10 people are organizing genres, there's an "unwritten rule" that you need to be careful what album you green light (especially for famous artists) if you don't want them to win) (Rob Kenner said this- he used to be on one of these committees). Famous people tend to get more votes from clueless or lay Academy members that don't know the specialized categories or don't care enough to listen to songs that aren't radio trending.
3) After the nominations occur, Voting members begin their first voting. Members can vote for the four general categories of record of the year, album of the year, song of the year and best new artist and a maximum of 15 categories, all within their areas of expertise. Now the interesting thing is that while these are the guidelines there is literally nothing stopping them from voting in whatever categories they want (i.g. a rapper voting in the opera category despite not listening to opera). Theses ballots are all tallied and the top 20 entries are determined in each category (funky moment #2)
In 12 of the 84 categories those top 20 go to the ballot and it's done; for the rest it’s not like that. 59 categories including the big four go to a "nomination review committees" (identities are protected so they can't get lobbied... sure) who take a look at the top 20 and narrow it down to 7 or 8. (these are the special committees the Weekend talked about when he was snubbed). They're supposed to choose the nominees "based solely on the artistic and technical merits of the eligible recordings" which lets be real if that was the case Watermelon Sugar (along with most of the others in the category) I don't think would have been nomimated as they are very generic pop (none of them are special... sorry to the WM lovers out there).
This committee is basically held to THE HONOR CODE SYSTEM... I mean tell me when the last time the honor code system worked in literally any scenario (literally wtf). Don't take my word for it though the former CEO of the Academy Deborah Dugan (a queen) filed a complaint against the Recording Academy basically claiming that the nomination review process was rigged (she was fired after 5 months on the job).
Quote from Deborah Dugan "Members of the board [of trustees] and the secret committees chose artists with whom they have personal or business relationships... It is not unusual for artists who have relationships with Board members and who ranked at the bottom of the initial 20-artist list to end up receiving nominations."
These review committees can also exploit there power by adding up to two nominees that don't appear on the top 20 list to the final voting ballot (except in the 4 big categories - which watermelon sugar that one wasn't nominated for)
They also have craft committees for like non performance stuff (like album notes, engineering and arranging) that don't even get voted on by the academy voting members
4) After all of that fucked up mess, the grammy's decided is ok, the ballots go back to the voting members for the final vote. Deloitte (an accounting firm) then counts all of them, seals them in envelopes, and delivers them to the Grammy award show.
** The Grammy's just announced this year they're removing the "secret committees" so let's see how things shift in the next couple of years**
So obviously I'm not saying this to discredit Harry's nomination or his win as Fine Line was in the US top 20 albums for the majority of 2020, however, we must acknowledge privilege. Harry has a big name to him and a huge following, and while all of that shouldn't be taken into account, it does. He also has the Azoffs, a very well connected family with friends in lots of places that would be able to put in a good word here and there to get support behind Harry. Harry won best pop solo performance for Watermelon Sugar in a category with Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa. Look at the names there, the songs (ya'll can try and remember them cause I'm too lazy to write it out) and tell me that those top names with all of the music produced didn't get there through some connections.
Do with all this information what you will and if you are interested in learning more about the entertainment industry on your own Endeavor (owners of WME, a big talent agency like CAA) is hosting a free online program called the Excellence Program to help guide the future generation of industry executives. The program is a-synchronous and starts on July 12th. Highly recommend giving it a go if you're interested!!!
Alright ya'll that's it. Feel free to message me with your thoughts!
