131 // āWatercolor Cardsā
#jjba#jojo's bizarre adventure#steel ball run#sbr#johnny joestar#offerings#tools used:#watercolors#sharpie#// I found this paper with a watercolor wash on it in my room while packing. I don't even think it was me who made it. Probably a sibling?#Either way I thought it'd be nice to chop it up and draw on it.#This was a really relaxing way to unwind after a long day. Just do some mindless zen like doodles of my favorite guy (and his horse)#They're all freehand with no sketching beforehand so they're a bit wonky but I kinda like that.#It was fun staring at each blank card and seeing what shapes or ideas would come for each.#Doodles like this are nice because you get to explore ideas. Maybe the ideas are good enough that you want to make it a full piece later.#I'm tryin to get better at making art that has āmistakesā and making art that's quicker so I can get over my perfectionsim hurdle.#Life has been ramping up in how busy I am so I'm gonna have to learn to live with making offerings that don't take 3+ hours to make.#Do you have a favorite from this bunch? Curious to know!#These will be gifts for people who ordered from the Johnnydrop. So you might recieve one of these! ^_^

#station eleven#y'know that feeling when your understanding of a piece of art grows and changes with your understanding of yourself and the world. yeag#when youre slow to understand the key themes of this show but then they click the entire work seems to open up to#you and reveals 10000 hidden blades that all stab you at once every second of every scene#the show made me cry about a hundred different things and it was fantastic to analyze but i always felt i was missing something#i got it in the end. i just needed to grow a bit more before i could put words to it#and the show helped#literally miranda manifesting dr eleven as a tool that helps the ppl in the show reconcile with themselves#handshake emoji#station eleven the show as a tool to help me reconcile with myself#god alive this show is good. please someone talk to me about it have a document full of half deranged thematic+symbolic analysis and sobbin

Stitch from the elevator scene in episode 48 of G Gundam
The camera did not pan far enough to completely include Bolt Gundam, sadly.
#G Gundam#Shuffle Alliance#I did this to practice with my new toy/image editor#It uh. did NOT save me time because I figured out how to keep the full height of the frames#despite the pan not being perfectly horizontal#it's a pain in the ass to have to remember to switch back and forth between the move and select tools now that I have a real ass program#but that's the price of not wielding a piece of shit I guess#there might still be some seam fuckery because I had to figure out which brushes were which too.#poor Argo keeps getting the shaft XD#he's cropped half out of this shot#Everyone gets a theme song! Argo and Sai have to share though.#gotta share that final fight with Domon with Allenby as well too champ#and he is *never* the one Shuffle member that gets into any of the video games#(If SunBandai just axed ONE of the two sets of designs that the WHOLE ASS WING TEAM GETS we could have all the shuffles fuck you wing)#my edits

even though i feel like i can confidently tell when a piece of art is generative A/I, i really don't feel inclined or really even justified calling someone out for it due to the precedent it sets - especially when artists who DO make their own pieces get caught in the crossfire for being inexperienced or making the choice to be more free-form when it comes to character design / consistency...
#i can't even really put into words how I can Tell#other than like... random blurry details in areas that would not logically have those details blurred - for styles imitating digital art#what i mean by this is: you can kind of tell when and where a type of tool has been used when it comes to digital pieces#if it looks like an artist grabbed the smudge tool and used it in a small area surrounded by crisper details ... it seems like an arbitrary#- and thoughtless decision#especially when it comes to character design pieces#this blurriness is also present in a type of style that wouldn't see much reason to use the smudge tool at all .. such as a cell shaded -#- toon style with thick outlines#i think what bothers me about this whole debacle is how we're setting up an environment where people feel inclined to lie about using-#-generative tools... part of the problem is the foundation of a/i art to be using people's work without . permission. im sure a good amount#-of artists wouldnt have minded MAKING pieces to be used solely for these type of tools#since generative art has been used as an excuse to replace artists in an attempt to render their work unnecessary or obsolete ... it's -#- become politicized and viewed as anti-artist. which. fair enough. it was pitched and sold that way#but even if like... these initial problems were addressed i feel like there'd still be a lot of stigma associated with generative art#since a lot of people's beef with it is the fact that it feels soulless. and i feel like that has to do with how the generated works are -#- being passed off as completed full pieces and not have any transformative work done upon them#i always joke about like 'they should invent art that's easier to make' ... but i don't want the hard work on my end replaced#just some help really. or guidance on completing my own work. A/I could have -possibly- been used as another form of reference#(if it were more competent. i think it's sloppy as hell in its current state)#but before it was uh... hugely controversial and right when generative A/I got more competent? i actually saw it as a toy.#i wanted to play with it and see what would come out... im honestly just more-so frustrated that it's viewed as on-par or better than-#-work done by human beings. what makes something art to me is if it's been transformed by human intention and connection#and i don't get how it's snobby to dislike A/I art for that reason. why do y'all think artists love when people dissect and examine their-#-work ? art is about human connection. we have ancient monuments and abandoned cave paintings we know nothing about-#- but are captivated by because we want to know WHY they're there. WHO made them. and for what reason#and i think a/i art is a painful reminder for a lot of artists that to a lot of people art is only valued through aesthetic merit#no acknowledgement for an artist's hard work .. their life .. all the personal intention behind their work#it's the commodification being thrown back in our faces tenfold#another tag essay by me. shiloh

i reeeeeallllyyyyy wish I fell in love with digital art the way I love traditional art.
my life would be so much better with an undo button. but nooooo. my brain decided that digital art which is like 1 stylus + 1 art app/program and then little to no payment is one of my least favorite mediums that I've tried
I dropped twenty dollars last weekend on one thing of lead and one eraser and one pack of blending sticks
whyyyy couldn't I have picked the cheaper and easier option
(not saying it's not difficult!!! Just think that it's easier with undo an button)
#okay I'm exaggerating when I say it's one of my least favorite mediums because I do enjoy using it time to time but I almost always do it to#improve tradition drawing because it's a good tool for that#but I've literally only once ever thought I wanted to make a full piece digitally and I didn't end up finishing it#it was a Darius background for my phone btw#wow these are long tags#digital art#traditional art#traditional sketch

still annoyed about that time someone went "idkkkk it seems kinda ooc for bill" when i mentioned that there was an interview saying bill probably wouldve immedately incinerated ford in part 3 the moment he got what he wanted and that alex didnt see him as someone romantic and instead only sees others as toys
#like what do you mean ooc???? thats literally the creator saying that!!!#(kinda why im annoyed at people going 'teehee he doesnt mean that' when we got bill saying he saw ford as a tool)#(like why is that the only piece of info youre being skeptical about when the book itself is full of contradictions :////)#anyway something something its a piece of text that purposefully is open to interpretation#(however. many of you are wrong. ajdgkgfkkh)#rantings rambles

Look Back VS AI Art
This is a real frame from Look Back (2024).
You might assume this made it into the final movie because of its director Kiyotaka Oshiyama (ę¼å±±ęø
é«) doing HALF the key animation for the film and only fully finishing it A WEEK before it's festival debut.
And well, you might be partially right about that. But more importantly, this is the movie embodying its themes through its unconventional production process and the very lines on the screen!
In an age of digital tools, CGI, AI, and other combinations of letters ending in I, Look Back is an ode to art and the labor that goes into it, no matter how tedious or imperfect.
Every thought, every little decision, every stroke made by a person puts a little piece of that person onto the screen, and the imperfections that come from that process can be beautiful in the sense that they're evidence of the thoughts and process that went into creating an image. So in keeping with the plot of the movie itself, Oshiyama made a point of leaving those remnants - lines that are scratchy, overlapping, or half-erased, and normally would have been cleaned up in 2nd key animation (第äŗåē»).
Ayumu Fujino has a tight grip on how she expresses herself, having this image to uphold as the perfect prodigy girl. She's afraid to let people see too much of her, lest that perfect image be shattered.
But at times the mask does slip, like this moment of sheer panic after she accidentally drops what is really an extremely rude manga strip under her rival's door by accident.
And it's these moments when that rough imperfection shines through the most! So this breakdown of polish in the art functions simultaneously as both a connection to the human labor that went into creating it, AND an impressionistic representation of Fujino's mental state within the world of the movie.
Not only are the edges of her backpack visible through her arm, her face even disappears completely, replaced by just the roughly sketched dividing lines that indicate the position of her eyes. At least personally, I never would have noticed this fully unfinished frame at full speed because the shot is just so well-executed! The framing is dramatic with Fujino surrounded by these mountains of sketchbooks in the foreground, and the motion is so believable, her posture - hunched over to the side to support the weight of the bag while maneuvering around the books, and the way her legs twirl around each other frantically, rotating this way and that.
But more importantly, this is a frame that an AI program would never draw, because it has no REASON to. There's no thought process, no decisions being made about how to express a feeling. Even if you did train an AI specifically to mimic these human imperfections, in Oshiyama's words, "It would just be a design. It would be a fake. The lines have meaning because they were drawn by humans. [ā¦] There's value in that." (MANTANWEB)
This is an adapted excerpt from this video! Go watch it or I'll dox you.

gonna show u guys a little opalescent highlight hack i threw together today
rainbow gradient above your main figure (i usually have all my main figure folders/layers in one big folder, so i can clip gradient maps + adjustments to it!). liquify tool to push the colors around a bit. STAY WITH ME I KNOW IT LOOKS STUPID RN I'M GOING SOMEWHERE WITH THIS
THEN: set it to add/glow (or the equivalent in ur drawing program), lower the opacity a bit, and apply a layer mask. then u can edit the mask with whatever tools you like to create rainbow highlights!!
in this case i'm mostly using the lasso fill tool to chip out little facets, but i've also done some soft airbrushing to bring in larger rainbow swirls in some areas. it's pretty subtle here, but you can see it better when i remove the gradient map that's above everything, since below i'm working in greyscale:
more granular rambling beneath the cut!
u could also just do this with a brush that has color jitter, but what i like about using layer masks for highlight/shading layers is how simple and reversible it makes everything. i can use whatever brushes i want, and erasing/redoing things is super low stakes, which is great when i often approach this stuff with a super trial-and-error approach.
example: have u ever thrown a gradient w multiple colors over an entire piece, set it to multiply etc, and then tried to erase it away to carve out shadows/highlights? it's super frustrating, bc it looks really good, but if u erase something and then change ur mind later, u basically would have to like. recreate the gradient in the area u want to cover up again. that's how i used to do things before figuring out layer masks!! but masking basically creates a version of this with INFINITE undo bc u can erase/re-place the base layer whenever u want.
anyway, back to rambling about this specific method:
i actually have TWO of these layers on this piece (one with the liquified swirls shown above, and another that's just a normal concentric circle gradient with much broader stripes) so i can vary the highlights easily as needed.
since i've basically hidden the rainbow pattern from myself, the colors in each brushstroke i make will kind of be a surprise, which isn't always great -- but easily fixable! for example, if i carve out a highlight and it turns out the rainbow pattern in that area is way too stripey, i can just switch from editing the mask to editing the main layer and blur that spot a bit.
also, this isn't a full explanation of the overall transparency effect in these screencaps! there's other layer stuff happening below the rainbow highlights, but the short version is i have all this character's body parts in different folders, each with their own lineart and background fill, and then the fill opacity is lowered and there's multiply layers clipped to that -- blah blah it's a whole thing. maybe i'll have a whole rundown on this on patreon later. uhhh i think that's it tho! i hope u get something useful out of this extremely specific thing i did lmao

During the 2008 recession, my aunt lost her job. Her, her partner, and my three cousins moved across the country to stay with us while they got back on their feet. My house turned from a family of four to a family of nine overnight, complete with three dogs and five cats between us.
It took a few years for them to get a place of their own, but after a few rentals and apartments, they now own a split level ranch in a town nearby. Iāve lost track of how many coworkers and friends have stayed with them when they were in a tight spot. A mother and son getting out of an abusive relationship, a divorcee trying to stay local for his kids while they work out a custody agreement, you name it. My aunt and uncle knew first hand what that kindness meant, and always find space for someone who needed it, the way my parents had for them.
That same aunt and uncle visited me in [redacted] city last year. They are prolific drinkers, so we spent most of the day bar hopping. As we wandered the city, any time we passed a homeless person, my uncle would pull out a fresh cigarette and ask them if they had a light. Regardless of if they had a lighter on hand or not, he offered them a few bucks in exchange, which he explained to me after was because he felt it would be easier for them to accept in exchange for a service, no matter how small.
I work for a company that produces a lot of fabric waste. Every few weeks, I bring two big black trash bags full of discarded material over to a woman who works down the hall. She distributes them to local churches, quilting clubs, and teachers who can use them for crafts. Sheās currently in the process of working with our building to set up a recycling program for the smaller pieces of fabric that are harder to find use for.
One of my best friends gives monthly donations to four or five local organizations. Sheās fortunate enough to have a tech job that gives her a good salary, and she knows that a recurring donation is more valuable to a non-profit because they can rely on that money month after month, and can plan ways to stretch that dollar for maximum impact. One of those organizations is a native plant trust, and once sheās out of her apartment complex and in a home with a yard, she has plans to convert it into a haven of local flora.
My partner works for a company that is working to help regulate crypto and hold the current bad actors in the space accountable for their actions. We unfortunately live in a time where technology develops far too fast for bureaucracy to keep up with, but just because people use a technology for ill gain doesnāt mean the technology itself is bad. The blockchain is something that she finds fascinating and powerful, and she is using her degree and her expertise to turn it into a tool for good.
I knew someone who always had a bag of treats in their purse, on the odd chance they came across a stray cat or dog, they had something to offer them.
I follow artists who post about every local election they know of, because they know their platform gives them more reach than the average person, and that they can leverage that platform to encourage people to vote in elections that get less attention, but in many ways have more impact on the direction our country is going to go.
All of this to say, thereās more than one way to do good in the world. Social media leads us to believe that the loudest, the most vocal, the most prolific poster is the most virtuous, but they are only a piece of the puzzle. (And if virtue for virtues sake is your end goal, youāve already lost, but thatās a different post). Community is built of people leveraging their privileges to help those without them. We need people doing all of those things and more, because no individual can or should do all of it. You would be stretched too thin, your efforts valiant, but less effective in your ambition.
None of this is to encourage inaction. Identify your unique strengths, skills, and privileges, and put them to use. Determine what causes are important to you, and commit to doing what you can to help them. Collective action is how change is made, but donāt forget that we need diversity in actions taken.
