The snaps on this SS1999 Margiela top actually have two purposes. First one is to attach the partial seamlining on the outside. The second was to attach capped sleeves. This was shown in the FW1993 collection video where models were fitting clothes and the staff attached the sleeves. As this top is from 1999, then why am I talking about fall 1993? Because spring 1999 was the 10 year celebratory collection from Martin. That season key items of his past 20 previous collections were reproduced, often in different forms. For example: there were other dresses with snaps, but placed differently, on which trompe-l'oeil printed shoulderpads could be placed. That specific grey dress is found on the website in grey, albeit sold, and the accompanying shoulder pads are on the site too and still for sale. The trompe-l'oeil print from the shoulder pads stems from the SS1996 collection where basic garments were printed with textures and dimensions. I also did sell some of them, so browse through the 'sold archives' and you'll discover a huge collection of old Margiela. Should I have kept it all, I could've opened a small museum 😂 But then I would probably have to eat instant noodles for the rest of my life. Actually, that doesn't sound so bad at all 🤷🏻♀️ #margiela #maisonmartinmargiela #margielaarchives #archivemargiela #vintagemargiela https://www.instagram.com/p/CJopp2MAsB-/?igshid=1kk8lg1pbl008
