Kakavasha is born a single grain of sand. A sliver of chromium quartzite among infinite others. Small, but no less important in the grander design of the desert. A piece of a whole.

He is born into love.

A shattering tears hearth from home. A grain becomes a grit becomes an irritation. He struggles and struggles and struggles until time and effort wear him down into something shining. Into something with edges. Anything deemed unnecessary, dispensable, is whittled away. He is left a remnant of carved facets and mirrored surfaces. What remains is worth showing off. Worth selling.

Whoever he once was dies with a number and a brand. A single bet leaves a corpse’s mouth, and something else takes his place. Wrath drapes his skin like a coat. Spite props the skeleton upright. Grief keeps the blood pumping.

Aventurine wins the bet, of course. He always does. Blood stained rags make way for bespoke suits. Calloused hands are protected in ink dyed lamb leather. He adorns himself in gold bands and bright colors.

(With great irony, he covers himself in peacock feathers. He means it as a warning, as an omen, but the intent is lost on his marks entirely. They mistake it for opulence or charm. Anyone who would have remembered the significance is no longer watching.)

Observers call it ‘indulgence’, but he knows better. Only the nature of his chains have changed.

In games of chance, there is no tolerance for error. He learns to hide the tremor. He is trained to suppress the flinch. The ever growing familiarity of sneering faces is met with a radiant smile.

He hates that it becomes second nature to him.

He hates the rot he lets fester inside himself.

He hates the way you look at him even more.

I feel like it’s obvious where this is gonna go to anyway…

Ratio has literally never met someone so dense and slow in his entire life

You can imagine his reaction when he heard you’re also a scholar despite your slowness

Tbh, the moment he heard you say “The Earth is flat” he already knew he was going to combust by the end of the day

Not only was your logic stupid to him, but so were your questions…

There was literally this one time you asked if chocolate milk actually comes from brown cows with a dead serious look, completely oblivious to the look of absolute disbelief Ratio was sending you.

“You really think chocolate milk comes from brown cows…?”

“It doesn’t?!”

“…”

He lost all hope for you (he never had any in the first place)

It’s like you can be smart at times, but you’re just too lazy…

Yeah, that had to be it…Or how else were you even capable of becoming a scholar? One that was a little less famous than him however, but he wasn’t surprised

There was this one time he tried to tutor you, and it ended with him storming out of the room while you watched cluelessly, confused on what you did wrong

Not even his strictness was enough, you were just flat-out dense. He nearly ripped his own hair out once

You also tended to get pretty distracted, always randomly halting to a stop when you’re with Ratio to watch a butterfly fly past you in awe

Ratio usually had to storm back over and drag you away by your collar. It’s happened more than once, he’s used to it by now, but it’s still annoying when he looks back and you’re not even there

When he notices you’re not behind him anymore is when you go oddly quiet, and your stupid questions suddenly stopped

You’re like a troublemaking child and he’s the stressed parent, except he’s this close to disowning you

Sometimes he doesn’t even know why he bothers to stay around you, but there was just something about how you slowly turn to face him when someone explains something with big words, needing him to clarify it a little less complicated

Aeons…He wouldn’t even be able to stand still if he saw you going up to some other dimwit for their help…He’s practically the only one you’ve got!

But of course, you were oblivious to this, too fixated in your own odd thoughts to notice Ratio’s change in behavior

You had him slowly warming up to you, and you didn’t even have the slightest clue…!

Sorry if Ratio seemed OOC! This idea randomly came to mind, and I just threw in anything I thought of 😭 I might try to make a Jing Yuan story next or just these platonic Ratio hc’s. I might not do the Ratio one tho
