Canadian police have arrested members of an alleged hit squad investigators believe was tasked by the government of India with killing prominent Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., last June, CBC News has learned. Sources close to the investigation also told CBC News that police are actively investigating possible links to three additional murders in Canada, including the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton. Members of the hit squad are alleged to have played different roles as shooters, drivers and spotters on the day Nijjar was killed at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, according to the sources. Sources said investigators identified the alleged hit squad members in Canada some months ago and have been keeping them under tight surveillance. Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh and Karan Brar face first-degree murder and conspiracy charges in the Nijjar case, according to documents filed in a Surrey court Friday. The charges have not been tested in court, but they all appeared before a judge virtually on Friday. [...] Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, was shot dead on June 18, shortly after evening prayers at his Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., in what appeared to be a highly coordinated attack, according to video of the incident obtained by CBC's The Fifth Estate. Last August, Canadian officials told representatives of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in person that Canada had intelligence linking it to Nijjar's killing. A month later — on Sept. 18, 2023, not long after returning from a fraught visit to India for the G20 Summit — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rose in the House of Commons to state that "Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India" and Nijjar's killing. "Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty," he added. Modi's government has denied it ordered extrajudicial killings in the U.S. and Canada. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar initially decried the Canadian allegation as "absurd" and accused Canada of harbouring violent extremists.

Participating via video link, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a speech at the G20 leaders’ virtual summit, reports the Kremlin’s press service.
During his address, Putin responded to statements from other leaders who had expressed shock over the ongoing war in Ukraine. Putin attempted to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and repeated that Moscow is open to peace negotiations, blaming Kyiv for refusing to come to the table. He then shifted to talk about the war in the Middle East.
Some colleagues have already said in their addresses that they are shocked by Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine. Yes, of course, military actions are always a tragedy for individuals, specific families, and the country as a whole. And of course, we should think about how to end this tragedy.
By the way, Russia has never refused peace talks with Ukraine. It is not Russia, but Ukraine that publicly announced its withdrawal from the negotiation process. […]
I understand that this war, and the loss of life, cannot but shock. And is the bloody coup in Ukraine in 2014, followed by the Kyiv regime’s war against its people in Donbas, not shocking? And is the extermination of civilians in Palestine, in the Gaza Strip, not shocking?
U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping declined to participate in the G20 video summit. Putin did not attend the earlier in-person G20 summit in India, due to his “busy schedule,” sending Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to lead the Russian delegation in his stead.

INDIA HAS JOINED THE MOON CLUB LETS GOOOOO
Tumblr media
India has landed its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the moon, becoming only the fourth nation ever to accomplish such a feat. The mission could cement India’s status as a global superpower in space. Previously, only the United States, China and the former Soviet Union have completed soft landings on the lunar surface. Chandrayaan-3’s landing site is also closer to the moon’s south pole than any other spacecraft in history has ventured. The south pole region is considered an area of key scientific and strategic interest for spacefaring nations, as scientists believe the region to be home to water ice deposits. The water, frozen in shadowy craters, could be converted into rocket fuel or even drinking water for future crewed missions
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in South Africa for the BRICS Summit, watched the landing virtually and shared broadcasted remarks on the livestream. “On this joyous occasion…I would like to address all the people of the world,” he said. “India’s successful moon mission is not just India’s alone. This is a year in which the world is witnessing India’s G20 presidency. Our approach of one Earth, one family, one future is resonating across the globe. “This human-centric approach that we present and we represent has been welcome universally. Our moon mission is also based on the same human-centric approach,” Modi added. “Therefore, this success belongs to all of humanity, and it will help moon missions by other countries in the future.” India’s attempt to land its spacecraft near the lunar south pole comes just days after another nation’s failed attempt to do the same. Russia’s Luna 25 spacecraft crashed into the moon on August 19 after its engines misfired, ending the country’s first lunar landing attempt in 47 years.
Chandrayaan-3’s journey As Chandrayaan-3 approached the moon, its cameras captured photographs, including one taken on August 20 that India’s space agency shared Tuesday. The image offers a close-up of the moon’s dusty gray terrain. India’s lunar lander consists of three parts: a lander, rover and propulsion module, which provided the spacecraft all the thrust required to traverse the 384,400-kilometer (238,855-mile) void between the moon and Earth. The lander, called Vikram, completed the precision maneuvers required to make a soft touchdown on the lunar surface after it was ejected from the propulsion module. Tucked inside is Pragyan, a small, six-wheeled rover that will deploy from the lander by rolling down a ramp. Vikram used its on board thrusters to carefully orient itself as it approached the lunar surface, and it slowly throttled down its engines for a touchdown just after 6 p.m. IST (8:30 a.m. ET) as applause erupted from the mission control room. The Indian Space Research Organization, or ISRO, later confirmed it had established two-way communication with the spacecraft and shared the first images of the surface captured during the lander’s final descent. The lander, which weighs about 1,700 kilograms (3,748 pounds), and 26-kilogram (57.3-pound) rover are packed with scientific instruments, prepared to capture data to help researchers analyze the lunar surface and deliver fresh insights into its composition.
Dr. Angela Marusiak, an assistant research professor at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, said she’s particularly excited that the lunar lander includes a seismometer that will attempt to detect quakes within the moon’s interior. Studying how the moon’s inner layers move could be key information for future endeavors on the lunar surface, Marusiak said. “You want to make sure that any potential seismic activity wouldn’t endanger any astronauts,” Marusiak said. “Or, if we were to build structures on the moon, that they would be safe from any seismic activity.” The lander and rover are expected to function for about two weeks on the moon’s surface. The propulsion module will remain in orbit, serving as a relay point for beaming data back to Earth.

---internazionale/[email protected] (Web Info) Read the full article

India is poised to establish its position on Digital Assets in the coming months, following a comprehensive examination of the international consensus on Cryptocurrency regulations. A senior official from India’s Finance Ministry revealed this plan during discussions held on the sidelines of the recent G20 leaders’ summit.Ajay Seth, Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, provided insight into this impending decision, stating, “The G20 has laid the groundwork for a risk assessment framework. Now, we will assess our own stance in the context of the global agreement among leaders to standardize crypto regulations in the near future.”Seth’s remarks underscore the substantial progress made within the G20, with prominent organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Financial Stability Board (FSB), Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) collaborating to establish a comprehensive policy framework for evaluating Cryptocurrency-related Risks.Importantly, there has been an endorsement of previous initiatives aimed at regulating stablecoins and unbacked Crypto Assets. This endorsement encompasses the formulation of high-level principles and regulations tailored to this specific category of Digital Assets.Addressing the complexities associated with banning virtual currencies, Seth added, “If you want to ban it (crypto), go ahead and ban it. But if other nations are not implementing bans, it will be exceedingly challenging for one country to do so.” Instead, he stressed the need for a consensus among nations to at least adopt the “minimum” regulatory standards outlined in the IMF-FSB paper.G20 Leaders Embrace IMF-FSB Synthesis Paper on CryptocurrenciesEarlier this week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) released a policy paper at the request of India’s G20 Presidency. This News/Articles/2023/06/22/cf-interest-in-cb-digital-currencies-picks-up-in-latam-the-caribbean-while-crypto-use-varies">paper discouraged an outright ban on crypto-assets and suggested the implementation of a licensing system for crypto-asset platforms, subjecting them to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing standards.The G20 leaders have officially endorsed the IMF-FSB synthesis paper on cryptocurrencies, and member nations are set to engage in more extensive discussions during the upcoming World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meeting in October. These discussions aim to define specific parameters for a global regulatory framework.As India prepares to determine its course of action regarding Cryptocurrency regulation, the global crypto community closely watches. The forthcoming decision in the coming months carries significant implications for India’s role in the evolving landscape of Digital Assets.!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s) if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments); if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0'; n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window,document,'script', ' fbq('init', '887971145773722'); fbq('track', 'PageView');
