ok lemme see where the Gainax property rights are, and where they’ll probably go

Hideaki Anno safely has the rights to both Evangelion and Nadia at khara, and has for over a decade now. He & his company will be working on giving the rights to what Gainax still owned to their original creators (probably including himself at least partially)

Hiroyuki Imaishi has both Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking’s rights at Trigger, since they’re currently working on a second season for the latter (it’ll probably be the next project after Delicious in Dungeon finishes, but there could still be a surprise release in between)

I’m gonna talk about FLCL and Aim for the Top! next, but their situations are a bit of a mess, so I’ll put that and everything else under a cut

Kazuya Tsurumaki moved over to khara alongside Anno. At one point in the mid-2010s - in exchange for getting Gainax out of its worsening financial troubles - khara attempted to buy the rights to both FLCL (which Tsurumaki directed) and Aim for the Top! (Anno directed Gunbuster while Tsurumaki directed its second season, Gunbuster 2: Diebuster). Gainax decided that the amount of money on offer wasn’t enough, and moved their IPs to shell companies, including Gaina (which has since been bought out by Kinoshita Group and become an actual anime production studio). Gainax later sold the rights to the former series to co-production studio Production I.G., who would go on to create 4 additional seasons for the North American market without Tsurumaki’s involvement.

Production I.G. will probably keep the rights to FLCL as a whole, considering they did co-create it, but I can see Anno trying to get the rights to at least Season 1 to also be under khara’s name

Eventually Gainax sold part of the rights to Aim for the Top! to Bandai Visual, as their name appears on the series copyright alongside Gainax’s own and FlyingDog’s (the soundtrack owners: Madhouse’s Trigun 98 also has FlyingDog copyright). Again, Gainax notably did this without the consent of either Anno nor Tsurumaki.

After being bought out by Kinoshita, Gaina had allegedly started work on a theatrical sequel to the OVAs in 2018. That means that there could be a maximum of 4 different companies owning Aim for the Top!, unless khara both buy out Bandai Visual’s part of the rights and move production of the movie from Gaina to in-house, which might be for the best if it’s in development hell…

Speaking of development hell and Gaina, they’re also working on a reworked version of the film Uru in Blue, which had started life at Gainax proper in 2017 before moving studios, and is currently at least 2 years behind schedule (whoa). This movie is intended to be the indirect sequel of Gainax’s first work - Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise - both projects directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga. Yamaga hasn’t founded any anime studios since Gainax in 1984, nor is he tied to any one studio like Tsurumaki, so either he’ll become the sole rights holder to the series, or Gaina will get the rights to the first movie from Anno.

I don’t know much about Yamaga’s Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, but the rights for it will most likely go to him and/or co-production studio Madhouse, if the latter isn’t already the sole rights holder to the series.

For something more straigtforward: Takami Akai’s Ninelives will probably get sole rights to the Princess Maker game series, and dual ownership of the anime Petite Princess Yucie alongside co-production company AIC.

Don’t ask me about Wish Upon the Pleiades, it’s probably fully owned by Subaru (the car company) anyway.

Gainax’s stake in their adaptations are probably going to go to each series’ director (i.e. His and Her Circumstances’ anime will probably have khara copyright from now on)

Speaking of adaptations, I’m unsure about Re: Cutie Honey. There are so many rights holders looking into it, I’m surprised it ended up getting an English dub last year (but that’s probably the reason why said dub only got a US release, and why said dub took 19 years). Most likely scenario is that Gainax’s rights go to khara, even if Anno wasn’t fighting for rights to this like he was Aim for the Top!.

does he get residuals from Warner Bros. for the live-action adaptation this OVA is based on? Does original mangaka Go Nagai still get residuals for either?!

to be clear: Gainax was always going to fail. from its early days, the company was a group of people who had no idea what they were doing. it was friends connected through passion and creation... but passion creation can't run a company on their own

Gainax's issues stretch back to their very start. Gunbuster and Honneamise both had Gainax make terrible deals that would haunt them. they didn't make any money off their original projects and it wasn't until they got into making games like Princess Maker that they turned a profit at all. at every level, staff turnover was high, and as soon as five years later, you had major early staff like Toshio Okada leaving. the company even committed tax evasion in the late 90s, and from what i've read, it was more accidental that anything, born of their own mismanagement and incompetance

Gainax died many times. it died when Anno and Tsurumaki left to found Khara. it died when Mahiro Maeda and Shinji Higuchi left to form Gonzo. it died when Akiyuki Shinbo poached Gainax staff to create his era of Shaft. it died when Imaishi left to form Trigger. for the last decade, Gainax has been coasting along, going from controversy to controversy

the company has been split apart so much that the only modern projects attached to the name— themselves sequels or spinoffs long promised but never realized, mere attempts to remind people of those golden years— are attached to other studios bearing some facsimile of the Gainax name, such as Gaina or Fukushima Gainax. even projects like Uru in Blue or Gunbuster 3 were being made elsewhere, because Gainax, the original Gainax, had become a shell of its former self

this day has been coming for 25 years or more, but it was a surprise to see it finally come to pass. godspeed and good riddance

About the WIP

Honestly don’t know how I came up with this idea… I wanted it to be dark fantasy/horror but most of it has gotten lost while fleshing out the story. Still, there are some darker elements in this project (for specifics see the trigger warnings). Since this is one of my younger brainchildren, I haven’t worked much on it yet, just the base necessities for worldbuilding, characters and plot. Since I’m seemingly incapable of not writing series, this WIP is probably going to be three books.

Summary

Prince Alric was very young when the war started, he was young when he joined the battles and he was not as young anymore when he was captured by the enemy. After four years of imprisonment he has come to term with his inevitable fate. Surrounded by enemies, left behind by friends and family and stripped of his magic and will, he prepares for the end.

However, the war is not over yet.

Main Characters

Alaric: Captured prince of the Robacyr bloodline. Once a driven and brilliant mind, now husk wandering through the halls of the enemies’ home, paraded about by King Ophion. 20 y.o. | he/him

Ophelia: Courtesan who recently arrived at the court of King Ophion. A mysterious figure who entertains others with riddles and story. Very knowledgeable about many odd topics. ??? y.o. | she/they

Phillip: Prince of the Kissascyr bloodline. Unlike his father, King Ophion, Phillip is very disinterested in his status and magical prowess. Prefers to read in silence and solitude. 20 y.o. | he/him

Helena: Princess of the Kissascyr bloodline. Unlike her husband Phillip, Helena is outgoing and sociable. A reliable friend and wonderful mother, she is known for giving helpful advice and a talent in leading positions. 20 y.o. | she/her

Gilbert: Right hand man of Phillip. A lowborn orphan who worked his way up to his current position through the war. A balancing presence to both Phillip and Helena with his reserved but confidant demeanour. 22 y.o. | he/him

Side Characters

Harper: Only daughter of the Duchess Eleanescyr. Has been prepared for her role all her life but fears her inability to fulfil it. Since the war on a quest to cure her of said inability, accompanied by a cat named Oscar. 17 y.o. | she/her

Fionn: Became Baron Almoncyr after his father’s death during the war. Alaric’s cheerful childhood friend, they haven’t seen each other since before Alaric’s capture. Has not been heard from since the war ended. 21 y.o. | he/him

Gainas: King Robacyr, Alaric’s father. Main commander during the war and a strict father to his sons. Has not been heard from since the war ended and his last surviving son, Alaric, was captured. 53 y.o. | he/him

Ophion: King Kissascyr. Devoted to his bloodline above all else, has a hard time trying to foster the same devotion in his son Phillip. Immensely proud of his accomplishments and victories in the war. 49 y.o. | he/him
