Categories of horses

A horse is an intelligent, agile and social animal that lives together in herds in the wild. Horses have slim legs which enable them to run fast. They have also got large eyes. Horses can run at a top speed of 88km/hr and can be as tall as 1.8 for an adult. Horses share an ancestry of non avian dinosaurs that existed 66 million years ago. The first horses appeared 56 million years ago. 

Domestication of horses changed human history, with horses we traveled faster and could transport goods, people, gems and culture at unprecedented speed. A study of 88 DNA of horses resulted into a discovery of horses with a Central Asia steppe culture called Botai with also the practice of animal husbandry dating 5,500 years ago. Horses were hunted and domesticated for milk and food. 

Today we are going to learn about the different categories of horses. 

1.Draft horses

2.Warmbloods

3.Light horses

4.Gaited horses

5.Ponies horses

1.Draft horses, draught horses, dry horses, carthorses, work horse is a large horse bred to be a working animal, doing hard tasks such as prowling and farm activities. They are also used for trail riding, pleasure riding, fox hunting,lumbering and other pleasure uses. These horse life expectancy is 18 years and they can run at a speed of 0.84 horse powers. Draft horses typically fall in sixteen to nineteen hands range and have bigger bones and muscles. (163cm to 193cm) high and 1,400 to 2,000 lb (640 to 910kg). Examples include the shire horse and the Belgian horse

2.Warmbloods: Warmbloods are a group of middle weight horses usually bred for sports activities. They are athletic, versatile and tempered usually used in equestrian sports. However, the term Warmbloods is used to refer to horse breeds used for specific purposes such as dressage or jumping etc. They are noted for their train ability and calm temperament, they are bred from Arabian and draft horses. These are one of the most expensive horses and the temperament of warmblood horses is between hot and cold bloods. Examples include the Hanoverian and holsteiner horses. 

 3.Light horses: These are bred for riding or light work such as pulling buggies. They originate from the Middle East and North Africa. Their temperament in warmblood, cold blooded and hot blooded. An average light horse weighs 1000pounds or 450kg. These horse are bred to specific disciplines such as polo, racing, driving, three day eventing, work as cutting Cattle, gymkhana, trail riding etc. They range from 14.2 hands high to 17.2 hands high. Examples include American Standardbred, Welsh Pony and Cob

4.Gaited horses: These are horses bred for natural gaited tendencies such as the smooth-to-ride speed characteristics, four beat horse gaits, all together called the ambling gaits. The ambling gaits are faster than a walk and the smooth gaits come from various forms and are usually specific breeds. A gaited horse moves each leg independently so there is one foot on the ground which enables it to use less energy when moving. The typical foot-fall for a gaited horse is a 4 beat gait where each foot falls independently. Examples include Icelandic horses and American saddlebred 

5.Ponies horses: A Pony is a small horse. Ponies are intelligent and friendly horses. Ponies are small in size growing more quickly other than horses. Ponies usually have thicker manes and coats to protect them from the cold. Ponies live for about 25 to 30 years. Historically, ponies were used for freight and transportation purposes, recreation, children's mounts and as competitors. They are usually fed from 1 to 1.5% of their body weight with good quality forage, hay, chaff or pasture. Examples include Welsh Pony and Pony of Americas.

The Queen of Pace

Charlotte Cook is no ordinary Icelandic horse rider. She’s the reigning world champion in pace from 2017, but more importantly she has pioneered a unique and innovative riding style when it comes to riding pace on Icelandic horses. This unique style, together with her incredible achievements in various competitions throughout the years, has earned her the nickname “The Queen of Pace”. 

As a brit, born and raised in Denmark, Charlotte competed for the British national team during the World Championships in Oirschot 2017, where she won 1st prize in the category of Speedpass 100 meters. She rode the beautiful horse, Sæla frá Þóreyjarnúpi, owned by Stald Lysholm, which she now has been training in her unique pace riding style for several  years. The interest for Icelandic horses has been on the rise in the UK in the past few years and the results in 2017 were the best so far for the British national team, fuelling the interest for Icelandic horses even further. Growing up in Denmark, with a Danish mother and a British father, Charlotte has always felt as somewhat in-between a Dane and a Brit, and competing for the British national team was a very special way for her to pay tribute to her father and her British heritage.

To learn more about Charlotte and the philosophy behind her unique style, we visited her in northern Sjælland, Denmark, where she works as a veterinarian and runs the horse breeding farm Bakkeholm.

Charlotte has adapted her unique style from when she was riding big thorough bred race horses and her position on the horse makes her an exceptionally aerodynamic rider – providing a big advantage in windy conditions. Many see Charlotte’s approach as the future of riding competitive pace on Icelandic horses. During our visit to Bakkeholm, we captured a few clips of Charlotte’s pace riding style as you can see in the video below.

Huge struggle today because I wanted the trot SO BAD!!!! Raaaaaahhh. I am determined to get her wtc and then go back to working in gait 😤.
