in mijn atelier ‘Holstein’ in Middelburg Vorige week eindigde ik met een opgestoken roze vinger, niet de mijne trouwens, als onderdeel van de Slag om het Zwartste Zwart. Een kunstwereld-strijd. Maar wat heeft roze nou met dat zwart en mijn atelierfoto van hierboven te maken? Dat zit zo. De schatrijke en bekende kunstenaar Anish Kapoor kon ‘t zich in 2016 financieel veroorloven het artistieke…

AU BOUT DES PAGES

Hey les papivores 2.0, aujourd’hui nous allons plonger dans un univers mélancolique. Katherine PANCOL célèbre romancière française, est une écrivaine dont le style se caractérise à l’américaine marqué par de nombreux dialogues et ses récits qui décrivent souvent des destins chaotiques de femmes indépendantes.

Le PITCH, d’abord !

Souvent la vie s’amuse.

Elle nous offre un diamant, caché sous un ticket de métro ou le tombé d’un rideau. Embusqué dans un mot, un regard, un sourire un peu nigaud.

Il faut faire attention aux détails. Ils sèment notre vie de petits cailloux et nous guident.

Les gens brutaux, les gens pressés, ceux qui portent des gants de boxe ou font gicler le gravier, ignorent les détails.

Ils veulent du lourd, de l’imposant, du clinquant, ils ne veulent pas perdre une minute à se baisser pour un sou, une paille, la main d’un homme tremblant.

Mais si on se penche, si on arrête le temps, on découvre des diamants dans une main tendue…

Et la vie n’est plus jamais triste. Ni le samedi, ni le dimanche, ni le lundi…

Mon AVIS, humblement !

Belles tranches de vies que nous livre ici, en grand chef, Katherine Pancol, tartinées tantôt de miel, tantôt de pâte à tartiner bon marché, mais toujours accompagnées de son fameux tea time dont elle seule à le secret.

On lui pardonnera sans problème cette éternelle histoire d'amour manquée entre Philippe et Joséphine (mais où va-t-elle chercher les prénoms de ses héroïnes ??), mais on l'attend au détour des traits de cet étonnant Junior, surdoué improbable qui casse quelque peu la véracité des propos.

Bien moins malin celui qui trouvera dans ces pages le fil rouge qui a fait le succès de l'opus précédent (La Valse lente des tortues)... on le cherche mais on ne le trouve point, perdu qu'il est peut-être entre les tourments de cette croqueuse d'Hortence (décidément, les prénoms sont un mystère pour Madame Pancol... ) et les pérégrinations de cette bonne vieille Henriette.

Toujours est-il qu'une unité de ton se propage dans les méandres de cette saga familiale à l'américaine, digne des meilleurs Dallas, un questionnement uniforme sur le rapport étroit entre hommes, à l'image du Petit Jeune Homme, vers de terre amoureux d'une étoile filante, de Gary poursuivant un père fantoche ou de Junior devenant un homme au contact du paternel.

Pancol nous en met plein la vue cette fois, en nous faisant entrer dans de nombreux mondes qui nous sont contemporains : celui des affaires internationales, évocant cette "crise financière" si proche de nous ; celui du "gratin" parisien, celui de l'écriture et de sa longue introspection ; une belle galerie de personnages, connus ou nouveaux, nous est alors donnée en pâture, donnant au livre un beau relief qui explique ses presque 1000 pages. Le lecteur en a pour son argent, il est content, content également de refermer ce troisième opus, dernier d'une longue saga qui menace de tourner en rond s'il propose un quatrième volet.

Bref, un écrin brillant et divertissant comme on les aime aujourd'hui, même s'il souffre de quelques incongruités.

Welcome to the 17th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 114 yeas ago.

In today’s installment, we have Part II of Chapter 7, “Une Visite à la loge n° 5” (“A Visit to Box 5”), and Part I of Chapter 8, "Où MM. Firmin Richard et Armand Moncharmin ont l’audace de faire représenter « Faust » dans une salle « maudite » et de l’effroyable événement qui en résulta" ("Where MM. Firmin Richard and Armand Moncharmin Have the Audacity to Have 'Faust' Performed in a 'Cursed' House and the Horrifying Event Which Thereby Ensued").

This section was first printed on Tuesday, 19 October, 1909.

For anyone following along in David Coward’s translation (the link is to the Kindle edition on Amazon US), the text starts in Chapter 7 at, “M. Richard and M. Moncharmin, ostensibly highly amused and still having a laugh, made a great show of moving the furniture around, lifting the dust-covers and the chairs,” and goes to Chapter 8 with the delivery of Erik's letter to Carlotta's apartment, “Among the correspondence was an anonymous letter which said:”.

There are some differences between the standard 1st Edition text and the Gaulois text. In this section, these include (highlighted in red above):

1) Chapter VIII was misprinted as Chapter IX. This numbering error was made in Chapter VII, and was not corrected, so it was propagated throughout the Gaulois publication.

2) Compare the Gaulois:

"Six palefreniers ! C'est au mois trop de deux !"

To the 1st Edition:

"Six palefreniers ! C'est au mois deux de trop !"

Translation: Both mean: "Six stablehands! That's at least two too many!"

3) Compare the Gaulois:

... quand elle se retrouva dans la galerie, en était tout étourdie encore...

To the 1st Edition:

... quand elle se retrouva dans la galerie, en était comme étourdie encore...

Translation: Both mean, “... when she found herself back in the corridor, she was still dazed..."

4) Minor differences in punctuation, italicization, and capitalization.

Eureka. La taupe a gagné. Elle jaillit de son terrier toute degueulasse comme un jack in the box et elle s’écrit Z’AI TRIOMPHÉ. Comme le lézard, nous sortons du tombeau. Lui et moi. À la différence du lézard nous ça nous a pris presque un mois. Mais on y est arrivé. Gare à Sein!!!

Nous? Ben pardi Riri le MackeyMac et moi, l’TaupTop. Et lui? la tomate en vers de terre? il nous suit de près. Il arrive. Il était juste derrière moi il y a qqs instants. Il passe toujours en dernier. Une sorte d’éthique de vie. Il a dû s’arrêter pour admirer une jolie racine totalement incongrue ou pour tirer sur sa pipe de hobbit. L’est comme ça l’Thoth.

N’empêche. C’est grâce à sa putain de persévérance qu’on est là. Et ptet un peu à Jack B (comme l’alcool). Quelle bouche! Je suis convaincue que des galaxies entières sont nées dans cette bouche. Définitivement, Jack B rend la galaxie largement plus douce et infiniment plus salace.

Somme mournings are just … MARVELLOOOOUIS.

PS 20/04:

Rectificatif: notre amie, la taupe a crié victoire un peu vite. Nous puions un peu beaucoup trop vachement en sortant de nos galeries brunâtres. La résurrection devait être moins réussie que l’érection. Et l’ordinateur semble avoir encore augmenté son niveau de bouderie. Mais comme la thoma neuve et neutre qui a jailli du martyr melodrolmatique est une force de persévérance et d’opiniâtreté iel s’est ré-attelée à la tâche et espère avoir de bonnes nouvelles rapidement.

PS 21/04: fuckin comp. Une nouvelle nuit à batailler avec les démons technilojurassiques! Qq1 pourrait-il rappeler aux objets aussi évolués soient-ils qu’ils sont là pour nous servir. Non l’inverse. ……… Du coup journée de dépit et de frustration, ascendants exponentiellement. Failli laisser MaxiMax me tailler un costard pour l’hiver (c’est bien l’expression consacrée, non? 😳🤷🏻‍♂️) mais j’ai eu la présence d’esprit de ressortir les docs paraphés stipulant les règles de non agression auxquelles nous avons tous (nous les belligérants ataviques des doutes de la honte et du reproche de thomassie centrale) souscrits et que nous avons signé avec émotion et fierté. Puis ce furent les effusions lacrimonieuses et une procession d’allocutions engoncées. Pour finir par un déferlement de promesses embuées et bien trop irréalistes pour pouvoir être sérieuses. Ainsi s’ouvre à nous un avenir apaisé (après ces décennies d’obscurité maintenue conscienceusement par la haine, le dégoût la culpabilité les conflits les attaques des meurtres assassinats attentas, après la violence systémique que nous avons tous exercés les uns sur les autres). Mais le calme et l’entraide sont des disciplines entièrement neuves où j’ai tout à apprendre!

Pour en revenir donc au ronchon…

Du coup, MxM a grommelé 3 sec. Puis son visage est devenu doux et empathique (sic!!!) Et il m’a simplement expliqué pourquoi il était un peu déçu de moi today. J’ai rétorqué que je le comprenais. Parfaitement. Que je pensais similairement. Je lui ai rappelé aussi que j’étais bien … malade (même si j’aime le boost que je ressens quand je me proclame guérie, que c’est fini, je vais mieux, c’est enfin derrière. En tout cas le plus dur est passé)(et je ne suis pas tout à fait sûr de pourquoi ça me semble si important de pouvoir me proclamer guérie, mais je ne cesse de tomber dans ce panneau avant de réaliser que j’ai été un peu hâtif: c’est assez croustillant comme j’ai beaucoup trop tardé avant de m’admettre dépressif et la célérité avec laquelle je me proclame guéri). Si ce n’était pas le cas je n’aurais été pas arrêté pour plus d’un mois supplémentaire sans avoir à dire quoi que ce soit. Dr P voit sans doute largement mieux que moi que mes discours volontaristes sont un sacré trompe l’heure qui ne dupe pas grand monde. Je suis encore loin de la rémission. Bref. MxM (réf au moustachu rigide hein pas au grand Reuf)(Non pas qu’aucun des deux ne me lira (d’ailleurs t, cherche pas, tu es le seul qui te lises). Mais vous… les myriades et les kyrielles de spectateurs —imaginaires— qui suivez tremblants et happés mes exploits et mes rocamboles, bouche entrouverte avec un morceau de popcorn à demi mâchonné à la commissure des lèvres, je vous dois bien un peu de clarté vu le nombre de fois où je me délecte de vous semer dans les plus épaisses brumes- labyrinthes qui soient, filtre blanchâtre et dont la facture n’est pas sans rappeler l’esthétisme si puissant des films porno soft italiens des années 70s. Oui j’aime à semer des mystères dans mon sillages. Et quels mystères subtils et né capitaux! L’insondable énigme de la lettre subtilisée à l’institution alphabétique. Des escadres de métaphores des plus fines (disons que leur légèreté hésite entre celle d’un éléphant et celle d’un rhinocéros), métaphores, dirons-nous litotement, puissamment sabotées!)

J’ai aussi posé très platement la question. MiniMino veut du plaisir (il réclame un ‘moment’ de plaisir quotidien, malheureusement pour moi il a une définition très élastique de quotidien). Ne voulant plus le malmener le braquer le torturer le combattre je lui accorde. Je lui rappelle que nous devons marcher main dans la main tous enseigne. Le sourire du sadu devient si large qu’il dépasse de son visage tandis que MaxiMax nous tourne le dos en maugréant. Ok ok mais pour l’amour de Dieu faites vites. Je descend du véhicule. Généralement j’ai à peine le temps de faire le tour et De le jeter sur le siège passager que tiMin détale à 200km/h (qui diantre lui a montré les fast and furious).

Mais il a beau faire, il a beau s’acharner, le plaisir ne vient pas. Ne vient pas ne vient pas Ne VIENT P A S . Il fait tout comme il faut il reproduit la recette idéale avec tous les ingrédients et toutes les épices. Et ça ne vient pas. Parfois ça approche. Ça glisse sensuellement avec la mollesse moite de son corps écaillé sur sa peau. Presque là presque qu’accessible. Et ça repart. Ça s’évade. Ça déjà disparu et impossible de suivre sa trace. Ce jeu dure 1h 2h 3h 5h et nous désespérons. Lui parce qu’il n’a pas été nourri moi car il s’est accaparé toute notre journée. Et qu’au fur et à mesure des heures il se sent de plus en plus bête fragile petit isolé non aimé. MxM jubile en chantonnant je l’avais bien dit je l’avais bien dit. Et de mon côté, je ne sais plus que faire.

Book: timed entry Louvre tickets in advance. MONA LISA VENUS DI MILO LOUVRE PYRAMID JARDIN DES TUILERIES After the Louvre, walk through Jardin des Tuileries. The French formal garden has picturesque landscaping, sculptures, and two formal ponds perfect for a relaxing break. The gardens were designed by the architect responsible for the gardens of Versailles and it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a great place for a morning stroll, particularly in spring. If you have time, Musée de l’Orangerie is an excellent gallery, in the south-west corner of the garden containing impressionist and post-impressionist works. JARDIN DES TUILERIES PLACE DE LA CONCORDE Continue through the gardens to Place de la Concorde, the largest public square in Paris. It’s notorious for being the site where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed. The Luxor Obelisk, in the square, was offered by the Khedive of Egypt. You don’t need long, but it’s worth a quick stop before you continue on to the Champs-Élysées. PLACE DE LA CONCORDE LE PETIT PALAIS Turn left off the Champs-Élysées to head down to the Petit Palais. (Don’t worry, we’re coming back to it). The palace was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle. Today,

it houses the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts, which contains a diverse collection of art and sculpture. It’s free to look around the permanent collection or just admire the elegant Beaux-Arts building. PONTE ALEXANDRE III Cross the river at Pont Alexandre III, an ornate bridge adorned with sculptures spanning the Seine. It connects Le Grand Palais and Le Petit Palais with Les Invalides and it’s considered one of the most beautiful bridges in Paris. LES INVALIDES Les Invalides was commissioned in 1670 by Louis XIV to provide care facilities for wounded soldiers. Consisting of 15 large courtyards, the complex is capped by a magnificent gold dome. It houses Musée de l’Armée, a collection of war memorabilia and the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte. We’d only suggest going in if you are particularly interested in guns and armour but it’s a good photo opportunity from the outside as you stroll past. Book: skip-the-line Les Invalides tickets. LES INVALIDES LUNCH For lunch, take a short detour down to Rue Cler. It’s one of the most popular market streets in Paris with cafes, boulangeries, boutiques, and specialty shops. Alternatively, Kozy Busquet does an excellent vegetarian brunch. It’s one of our favourite coffee shops in Paris. CHAMP DE MARS After lunch, make your way over to Champ de Mars, the green space in front of the Eiffel Tower. The park is open day and night and it’s a great spot for a picnic lunch (which you may have picked up from the market) under the gaze of the Eiffel Tower. EIFFEL TOWER Next, climb the Eiffel Tower. There are three viewpoints: the 1st floor, the 2nd floor, and the summit. The best view is from the 2nd floor. You can either walk up the stairs (674 steps) or take the elevator. Book Eiffel Tower tickets in advance as the queues can be very long, especially in peak summer periods. Our Tip – If you only have time for one viewpoint in Paris, make it the Arc de Triomphe. The views are better than from the Eiffel Tower. VIEW FROM THE 2ND FLOOR PLACE DU TROCADÉRO This elevated, open space, opposite the Seine, is one of the best locations to photograph the Eiffel Tower. Leading from the square, the English-style Trocadéro Gardens contain the Fountain of Warsaw, a 22-cannon water feature. There are also sculptures in the gardens that are well worth checking out. Catch the metro from Trocadéro to Charles de Gaulle – Étoile Station which is at the Arc de Triomphe. VIEW FROM TROCADÉRO ARC DE TRIOMPHE You can visit the base of the arch for free to see the eternal flame and the grave of the unknown soldier. But, in our opinion, the climb to the top offers the best view of Paris with boulevards stretching out in all directions. Book: skip-the-line Arc de Triomphe tickets to climb the 284 steps to the summit, which includes the museum on the way up. ARC DE TRIOMPHE FROM CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES After climbing the Arc de Triomphe, head down the Champs-Élysées, one of the most famous streets in the world. It’s lined with luxury boutiques, theaters, and cafes. It’s an iconic destination in Paris, but the wide boulevard lacks a bit of character. Unless you want to do some shopping, we suggest just walking down as far as Ladurée to stock up on macarons. Head back to Charles de Gaulle – Étoile Metro Station to catch the train to Pigalle Station. CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES PLACE DES ABBESSE, MONTMARTRE From Pigalle Station, walk up to Place des Abbesses. This charming square has a village-like atmosphere with cool boutiques, cafes and bistros. Don’t miss the Wall of Love just off Jehan Rictus Square featuring 612 tiles with the phrase “I love you” in 250 languages. PLACE DU TERTRE, MONTMARTRE Walk up the stairs to Place du Tertre, also known as Artists Square. Artists are allocated 3 feet of space which must be shared between two artists on alternating days. Have your portrait taken or peruse the landscapes, caricatures, and silhouettes for sale. WALL OF LOVE PLACE DU TERTRE

PLACE DES ABBESSE SACRÉ-CŒUR The Romano-Byzantine Basilica of Sacré-Cœur offers a picture-postcard Paris experience with excellent views across the city. The queues to climb the dome can be very long and unfortunately, there is no way to book skip-the-line tickets. But, by the time you’ve done everything else today, the timing should be about right for the queues to be shorter. SACRÉ-CŒUR PIGALLE As the evening rolls in, stroll down to Pigalle to explore the area around Moulin Rouge. You could try a show at the famous cabaret venue, however, the reviews are not great. A better option is Au Lapin Agile, on the backstreets of Montmartre. If you stay in Pigalle, there are plenty of great restaurants and the nightlife is excellent. Don’t miss No Entry, a hidden speakeasy under Pink Mamma restaurant. MOULIN ROUGE NO ENTRY 2 DAYS IN PARIS | DAY 2 CATACOMBS To start the second day of your 2 days in Paris, head to the Catacombs, a 1.5-kilometre underground tunnel containing the remains of 18th-century Parisians. In what has become a true temple of equality, bones are piled head-high on either side of the tunnel in careful constructions and none of the remains are named. It’s a small space so places are limited. Tickets must be booked in advance on the Catacombs website but they are only available up to 7 days in advance. A visit takes around 1 hour. CATACOMBS PANTHÉON Next, get the metro to the Panthéon. It was originally designed to be a church, but it is currently a mausoleum to honor French revolutionaries. Inside, Foucault’s Pendulum which was used to measure the rotation of the earth, hangs from the dome. The crypt contains the tombs of famous French philosophers. Book: skip-the-line Panthéon tickets. PANTHÉON LATIN QUARTER Leave the Panthéon and stroll around the Latin Quarter. Jozi Café is a great Paris coffee spot, and there are plenty of grand buildings to admire including Sorbonne University.   MUSEE D’ORSAY (OPTIONAL) If you are interested in seeing more art, catch the metro from Saint-Michel Notre-Dame Station to Musée d’Orsay, the world’s largest collection of impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces. You’ll find works by Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Renoir. The building itself is stunning. It’s one of our favorite galleries in Paris. SAINTE-CHAPELLE If you went to Musée d’Orsay, get the metro back to Saint-Michel Notre-Dame Station. Head to Sainte-Chapelle, a breathtaking Gothic chapel, renowned for its stunning stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes. The upper chapel contains 15 extraordinary panels filling the entire wall space with stained-glass windows. Book: skip-the-line Sainte-Chapelle tickets. SAINTE-CHAPPELLE NOTRE-DAME Walk over to Notre Dame, stopping off at Le Marché aux Fleurs, a flower market dating back to the 1900s, and Ponte Neuf, the oldest standing bridge across the Seine. Following the fire in 2019, Notre-Dame remains closed to the public, but you can still admire the magnificent French Gothic architecture and visit the archaeological crypt. Notre-Dame is due to reopen in December 2024. NOTRE-DAME SHAKESPEARE & CO Cross the river again to stop off at Shakespeare & Co, a popular English language bookstore just opposite Notre-Dame. Stroll along the banks of the river to inspect Les Bouquinistes, the iconic book stalls selling vintage books, prints and historic illustrations. BERTHILLON ICE CREAM Continue along the river, then cross at Pont de la Tournelle to have an ice cream at Berthillon, one of the best ice cream shops in Paris. SHAKESPEARE & CO LE MARAIS Ice cream in hand, continue over the river and into Le Marais. Le Marais is a fashionable district known for its narrow streets, historic architecture, trendy boutiques, and art galleries. The area was favored by France’s nobility in the 17th and 18th centuries which has given Le Marais the elegant architecture you see today. Roughly follow the walking tour on the map above. USING THE PARIS METRO It’s no longer possible for tourists to purchase multi-day passes on the Paris metro for a discounted rate. The only option is a 5-day travel pass which we don’t think is worth the cost, given how easy it is to walk around Paris. The Carnet offer of 10 single tickets has now been phased out. You can purchase a pack of 10 tickets via the Navigo Easy pass at a slightly discounted rate, however, you need to purchase the card which can be topped up online for €2. In our opinion, the easiest way to use the metro is simply to buy single tickets from the station. We used 20 single-trip tickets each in 7 days.   Please note, the Paris Pass no longer includes free public transport. Au fil du temps, j'ai pu constituer une bibliothèque pugilistique qui comprend surtout des essais à caractère historique, des biographies de champions, des récits et de nombreux romans. Ça m'avait pris pendant la préparation d'un ouvrage qui traitait de la rencontre, au début du XXe siècle de Jack Johnson, grand champion noir, et Arthur Cravan hurluberlu de fort tonnage et poète ami des Delaunay, un genre de proto-dada. Dans ces livres, il y avait le Sugar d'Éric Sarner, paru au début des années 2000, recueil-portrait de Ray Sugar Robinson, libre et aérien comme son modèle, versifié et savant, détendu, facile d'allure, jazzy bien sûr et qui trace une esthétique de la boxe, souvent décrite comme un poème. Puis, il y a peu, Poésie/Gallimard a fait reparaître ce recueil augmenté d'autres poèmes, dont certains sont des exercices d'admiration, Pasolini, , Leiris, Roth, Becckett, toute une galerie, toute une bibliothèque. Je l'avais repris, sans le relire, par précaution et acquis de conscience. Cette semaine, par hasard vraiment, j'y trouve ça que je n'avais jamais remarqué, au numéro 26 (Sugar est scandé comme des rounds) :

Et voilà comment les poètes parlent des livres qui parlent de la boxe, qui est un poème, dont parlent les boxeurs, et les poètes, et Sarner, et moi, et Sugar Ray, et Cravan forcément et tout ça finit par composer nos bibliothèques, notre histoire, et noscombats et nos poèmes, qui se saluent de loin en loin, bibliothèques de nos fantômes vivants.

Jeep a présenté une version très modifiée du Wrangler 2024 lors du Salon de l'Auto de New York. Il y a tellement de changements que la compagnie considère cela comme un tout nouveau modèle. Néanmoins, il est important de noter que la compagnie n'a pas tardé à apporter des changements maintenant qu'elle n'est plus la seule dans cette catégorie unique, avec l'arrivée du Bronco de Ford. Une apparence célèbre Le Jeep Wrangler 2024 conserve son apparence célèbre, mais Jeep a quand même apporté quelques changements. La grille redessinée avec des lamelles plus fines et des fentes verticales texturées en noir pour améliorer le refroidissement et permettre le montage d'un nouveau treuil Warn. Ce treuil disponible sur les modèles Rubicon et installé en usine. Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia (TSA PHL) is pleased to present Here After, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Megan Biddle and Erin Woodbrey. Working across two and three dimensions, the work in Here After toggles between registers of time and physicality. What seems to be in a state of fluidity and movement is, in fact, in stasis. What is heavy is light, and that which is new seems from another time. Through objects made by naturally-occurring and fabricated processes and materials, both artists examine a spectrum of states between permanence and decay. The exhibition will be accompanied with “The Old, the New, the Fossil: Megan Biddle and Erin Woodbrey's Here After," an essay by Leah Triplett Harrington. Ripples of glass are fossilized like scars in one of Biddle’s relief sculptures entitled Future Relics. The title references a memorial object of a time we have not yet encountered, impressing upon the material world like wounds from a pressure ulcer. The dark black glass of these works is encrusted with sand, residue from their making. To produce these sculptures, Biddle plunges an object into a bed of sand, as if to explore the unseen terrain below. The resulting hollow is filled with molten black glass. This process echoes the tension between surface and what lies beneath, a theme which reverberates throughout her work.

In Woodbrey's The Carrier Bag Series, an ongoing body of sculptural and related photographic works, objects are illuminated and entombed in a mixture of ash, plaster, and gauze. As if pulled from a museum of a future past, these free-standing sculptures reference both contemporary and ancient objects, building materials, and analog forms. The series draws its title from Ursula K. Le Guin's radical rethinking of the story of human origin and technology in "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction." Catalyzed by this and the urgency to rethink materials and cycles of waste and consumption, Woodbrey examines the paradox built into objects that are intended to be discarded but not intended to decompose. Through a careful repurposing of material, the container is animated from within, becoming a central figure in a narrative about accumulation and new materiality.

Megan Biddle has attended residencies at Macdowell, The Jentel Foundation, The Creative Glass Center of America, Sculpture Space, The Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Pilchuck Glass School, Northlands Creative Glass in Scotland, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Mass MOCA. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including A.I.R Gallery, Brooklyn, The Islip Art Museum and the Everson Art Museum in New York; the Reynolds Gallery Richmond, VA.; Space 1026 and Philadelphia Art Alliance in Philadelphia, PA.; Galerie VSUP in the Czech Republic; and the 700IS Experimental Film Festival in Iceland, and Shau Fenster and NationalMuseum in Berlin, Germany. Her work was acquired into the American Embassy’s permanent collection in Riga, Latvia. She has taught at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, Urban Glass, Oxbow School of Art and currently teaches as an adjunct professor in the Glass Program at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. She is a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Philadelphia where she lives.

Leah Triplett Harrington is a curator, writer, and editor. As curator for Now + There, she facilitates the Public Art Accelerator and organizes large-scale public art commissions. She is also editor-at-large for Boston Art Review. Her writing has most recently appeared in that publication and ArtNet News, Sculpture, Public Art Dialogue, Flash Art, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, and others. As an independent curator, she has organized projects for Boston University Art Galleries, Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Trestle Gallery, Herter Gallery, and others. In 2021, she was the inaugural curatorial mentor for Praise Shadows Art Gallery and taught in the MFA program in Painting at Boston University.
