Some references & details I noted from the first episode ^^

Daniel Molloy's puzzle picture is The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Peter Bruegel the Elder (1562) (full painting on wikipedia) (he was himself inspired by earlier Jerome Bosch paintings... take a gander at the Garden of Earthly Delights on wiki !)

In the early 1900s, a Blue Book could be purchased for 25 cents. Blue Books were created for advertising the services of the sex workers of Storyville and included the names of working prostitutes in New Orleans. Arranged by name or address, the prostitutes were also distinguished by race and religion, with special markings for each category. (Guidebooks to Sin : the blue books of Storyville, New Orleans by Pamela Arceneaux, by way of wikipedia)

Jelly Roll Morton (on the back of the piano) was an American ragtime and jazz pianist and composer with Creole and French origins.

"Par exemple, you fine gentlemen have heard of the success story that is Le Bon Marché, a shopping experience like no other..."
The first of Paris' grands magasins (along with Les Galeries Lafayette, La Samaritaine, etc.), founded in 1852 by one Arthur Boucicaut and still existing today. Basically, it was the first department store and very, very successful.

The Cajun money dance tradition was brought to Louisiana by French Acadians. Guests pin money to the bride's veil to dance with her (here directly on Grace's dress) (see louisianafolklife.org for a picture).

Rennes
We are briefly in Rennes, capital of the Brittany region, en-route to the small fishing village of Saint-Martin-sur-Oest where we will pick up our boat tomorrow. A tourism website describes Rennes as ‘a well-crafted interface between past and present’ on account of state of the art public buildings co-existing alongside 286 painted timber-framed houses emblematic of its medieval history. It was almost destroyed by fire in 1720 and then it was bombed by our side in WW11.
We would have visited one of those modern buildings, Les Champ Libres, a cultural centre that specialises in the history of Bretagne, but we were too early for it. Promising ourselves that we would return when it opened at 12pm, we never did. The ultra-modern railway station with its wave-like roof lured us in and then the Centre Ville shopping precinct had its hooks in us. In doing that, we saw an edgy social interface to Rennes as well as an architectural one.
Not for the first time judging by the graffiti and damage to shop windows, a demonstration was taking place against Macron’s raising of the retirement age from 62 to 64. Large groups of armed Police were waiting in side streets ready to intervene if the situation required it. The Rennes Cathedral had a notice on its door saying that it was closed due to uncontrollable elements and when we were leaving the Galeries Lafayette department store we were asked to leave by a back exit so that we didn’t find ourselves caught up in it. It was as if the citizens of Rennes had seen the worst of people, whether they supported the cause or not. From what we could see, the protest moved quickly along, leaving nervous people and boarded up windows in its wake, in it for the long haul.
Our choice of a set price lunch at a creperie that looked as old as the cathedral opposite couldn’t have been better. Apart from the spectacular caramel crepe that finished the meal, from my vantage point I could see an engraved section of stone set into the cavernous fireplace beside us. The owner told us that it had been a gravestone (for someone called Jeremy he surmised) and that the inscription was in Latin. How would it come about we wondered for a gravestone to be repurposed in this way, at least 200 years ago.
We finished our sightseeing with a walk to the Jardin du Thabor (a French classical garden) that happened to retrace some of the many false steps we had taken trying to find our elusive hotel yesterday in Avenue Jean Janvier. Then we made use of the hotel’s plunge pool, spa and sauna, relishing being the only occupants.

5 days ‘til Christmas.
If you aren’t done with your Christmas shopping I would highly recommend you do NOT go to any of the “Grands Magasins” in Paris… you might find anything you want but you might end up losing your sanity. It’s been madness for the past few weekends I can’t even imagine on the last few days!!!
Christmas window displays at the big department stores are works of art, ever more inventive and surprising. In keeping with tradition, the facades of Parisian department store are adorned with the most stunning festive decorations.
I always wonder how the different stores come up with theme each year and if they call each other to make sure they didn’t pick a similar theme 🤔
This year BHV went with a “Noel en Provence” theme, La Samaritaine with “Paris mène la dance”, Le Bon Marché with “La Fabrique de boules de Noël”, les Galeries Lafayettes with “Planète Sapin” and Le Printemps with “Le Cirque”.
My favorite outdoor display was probably Le Bon Marche, with their Christmas baubles workshop with mini elves, very kid friendly yet lovely to see for the adults. I also liked the dance theme of La Samaritaine with their Paris Leads the Dance theme and the choreographed decor of different dance genre and era. The BHV’s Noel in Provence was also great especially inside the store, very cozy.
