what's the Galileo tea? 👀 (got any Articles?? this sounds much more interesting than my soil readings lol)
I don't have any good articles on hand, although I think Patricia Fara's Science: A Four-Thousand Year History has one of the better (brief) accounts in as far as summarizing some of the main issues.
The short of it is that Galileo was definitely not the most diplomatic guy around, and also very entrenched in the complex, factional politics of the day -- what we now call the Galilean moons of Jupiter, he originally named the "Medicean stars" in an attempt to flatter the powerful Medici family. He was decidedly interested in climbing ladders, independent of his science, and used the latter in an attempt to accomplish the former, which may be one reason he wasn't opposed to stirring up controversy. It gets you noticed.
There's a whole string of off-ramps that could have prevented his trial, but one of the ones that stands out most to me is the way he chose to present his ideas (which is exactly why all this drives me crazy as a science communicator). In The Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems -- the book that really landed him in trouble -- he presents arguments for both the heliocentric Copernican and geocentric Aristotelian systems through two fictional characters. Which sounds measured, until you learn the character representing the Aristotelian system is named "Simplicio" in what really feels like an elaborate method of insulting anyone who disagreed with him.
Which. I cannot emphasize enough. Up until this book was published, the current Pope had actually been a patron of Galileo's, who permitted him to explore the heliocentric hypothesis so long as it was treated as a thought experiment. Galileo decided the best response to this was to put the Pope's own viewpoint in the mouth of a character named "simpleton" who ended up being ridiculed by the others by the end of the book. Really great move. No one could have forseen this backfiring.
Another thing that isn't mentioned often is that Galileo's trial wasn't a unanimous decision. There was actually some sympathy for his arguments, and for the heliocentric model (Copernicus' On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres was also controversial -- though some of that controversy was a direct result of the Galileo affair -- but people liked that it was better for calendrical calculations!) and the decision was by no means a totally inevitable one. If he hadn't presented his ideas the way he had, who knows what would have happened. Again, I would never point to a single event as the reason for the religion/science rift that exists today. But at the same time, imagine where we might be if the trial had gone differently.

My take on the Voynich Manuscript:
It was written by someone who was literate (obviously), artistically skilled, and knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects. Like a proto-Galileo.
It was written partially in abbreviated Latin. Up until very recently, anyone with a Western formal education worth its salt knew Latin.
The author was extremely bright and had a formal Western education at the very least. Likely came from a wealthy family and/or had a rich benefactor. They were important enough that their name and title are possibly still written down somewhere.
It was written partially in Old (High?) German, some 300 years after the language had evolved into Middle High German. Correct me if I'm wrong. That's the equivalent of someone today being fluent in Early Modern (Shakespearen) English. Certainly not impossible, but not something a layman would easily understand.
The author has spent an extensive amount of time studying old texts. Shit that's hard to get your hands on. This person was a scholar that had access to an impressive library.
The Old German/Latin abrv. mishmash is written out phonetically using a version of the old Turkic alphabet. That's kind of vague as hell and covers a huge timespan. Looks like Manichaean script to me, but I'm sure as shit no historical linguist. If anyone knows what it is, that could help us narrow down the timeframe.
The mid-east was bangin around this era. It was THE hot spot for discovery and innovation for pretty much anything.
The author was a polyglot who knew at least two archaic writing systems. They were either well-traveled or had sweet sweet neworking connections to the cool acedemics out east. Specifically: access to their rare books.
The book is coded, presumably to keep the information out of the hands of anyone without the cipher. This makes me think occult, so I'm inclined to believe the alchemist angle. A court alchemist would have access to the crown's deep pockets and private libraries. The coding would conceal any work a benefactor might find scandalous or heretical.
We have a rough timeframe. Finding the author is now a process of eliminating people who wouldn't have access to the knowledge and resources necessary to code the book. So, how many kingdoms in Europe had court alchemists, global connections, and the money to throw around for research? How many of those alchemists studied these subjects?

My favorite planet is Jupiter because I impressed very hard as a small child on some sci-fi book my dad read me, the title or author I could not tell you, where Jupiter hosts giant animals that float through its outer layers. I doubt its scientific plausibility, but 6-year-old me thought it was cool as hell and it's biased me forever. (Also, Jupiter is pretty.)
Jupiter is very cool! It's the only planet in the entire solar system heavy enough that the gravitational midpoint between it and the sun is actually outside of the sun!

To save everyone the incoming ramble if you don't feel like reading pedantic pontification on Porn For White Women, TLDR; These 'Spicy Booktok' Authors, stuck in the bubble of shame built for them since birth, write porn in which Misogyny is the foundation.
Ignoring the brief "Getting fucked by thanksgiving leftovers" screenshot bc that one doesn't exactly count; The way in which the foundational misogyny manifests in each book is sorta formulaic, bc you can't really Iterate or subvert Misogyny without shattering the framework of the smut you're trying to make. You have the Young Spunky Female Protagonist, likely a virgin, definitely "innocent" but adequately sassy and Independent* - the pinnacle of purity without being.... Boring. [ it's still fucking boring ].
Spunk and sass, the "I don't need no man" attitude is actually what's being broken here. This nameless protag, is just capable enough until the Daddy Dom Love Interest shows up and, through a sticky series of borderline assaulty events, ends up "Curing" Female protag of what little autonomy she had - I use that word extremely liberally here. That's really all there is to it, though, in regards to the contents of this content.
The issues begin to arise when you Blink to readjust your eyes and come to understand that these books make no effort at all to break out of the aforementioned Status Quo. The uncomfortable, stunned humor most of us probably feel when reading these brief one-liner ads is because this is Just fetishized patriarchy. These writers fundamentally don't understand BDSM or kink dynamics, they cannot conceptualize sexual desire from men as anything other than borderline abusive, predatory and controlling and because they either Haven't confronted it, don't know how to confront it or simply just don't Want to confront it - "it" being The Entire Fucking Patriarchy and how it works.
But please don't misunderstand me; I am not trying to claim that each and every one of these women are Bad for writing these books. They are, in the end, still victims under the system and I wouldn't be surprised if this was all one complex coping method [ albeit unknown to the writers, oops ]. However, I must also acknowledge that these are Grown adults and we live in the year of our lord 2024; Remaining uninformed is... Difficult, to say the least.
Instances of Misogyny don't just stop there either, from what I've seen and heard, most of these Spunky Sassy female protags are no older than 25 and behave like "Bratty teenagers". Sexy Sexism requires you to write women like they're fucking stupid and frames the "I don't need no man" attitude as frustratingly and even attractively naive for the Daddy Dom in the story. The Idealization and sexualization of youth and Purity.
This is just... Rape culture in a velvet box. Go back to the post and read each screenshot, seriously. "He knocked her out and tattooed his name on her finger" "She pretended to be dead but he did it anyway" "When he pays 1.6 mil for her vagina" "You'll need a safeword when I'm done with you." What the fuck does that sound like? A woman saying no and not being respected, a woman trying to avoid sex but failing, straight up prostitution [ which isn't bad, I'm no anti-sexwork pundit, but the context of this sucks], and flagrant misuse of safewords in pseudo-kink situations.
Of course, all of this is fictional, so what's the hullabaloo? Honestly, I don't know. I can't truly assess the morality of these books bc they too exist in a state in which all fiction does where nobody irl gets hurt, and that's all I personally care about. I think I summarized the issue in a message I sent to Galileo:
this isn't as simple as "oh it's just cumbrained self-insert erotica" it's "oh no these women have fetishized an abusive institution personified into a hollow facsimile of what they wrongly assume BDSM dynamics look like."
Ultimately I suppose my conclusion is that I think I feel sorta bad for them. Sex and Romance and Desire can be so much more intricate and intimate and tender, even in it's most brutal or whumpy/snufflike forms in media, literature or art. From where I'm standing, having such a reductive, restricted view on love and sex is tragic.

The belt buckle is very interesting, it doesn't follow Ryusui's nor Nanami Corp.'s branding and looks like a C+.
My guesses for the meaning: -C+, the programming language, based off the fact he was petrified on his laptop presumably. -C, the Roman numeral, indicating 100+ because of the million-times brainpower comment (million in Japanese is 百万, 百=100). -C, from E=mc^2, for light speed.
Sai's odd yell ("peegyaaaah!") may be a computer joke, as the sound effect "ピ" (pi) tends to be used for computer beeps, like pressing a button.
A similar sound has been used in the past for Xeno's encryption device.

I don't read a ton of books about science or scientists, but Katie Spalding's book, Edison's Ghosts: The Untold Weirdness of History's Greatest Geniuses (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), which was released in May, is easily one of the most entertaining books I've read in the past couple of years.
When you're sitting down to read a book by someone with a PhD in mathematics, you don't expect it to be fun from cover-to-cover, let alone flat-out funny. In fact -- and I know that the fine folks at Hachette won't be able to use this in a blurb -- but Dr. Spalding's book is fucking hilarious! And that description is especially fitting because Katie Spalding had to have set some sort of record for creative profanity in a book primarily about science and scientists, an achievement that only makes Edison's Ghosts more entertaining by the chapter.
Speaking of chapters, I can't do justice to Dr. Spalding or Edison's Ghosts -- which was published in Harding's native UK under the even better title of The Limits of Genius: How Some of the World's Greatest Minds Were Surprisingly Stupid -- with a couple of quick paragraphs, so I'm just going to share some of the actual titles of the chapters of the book from the table of contents so you can get a hint of how amazing this book truly is:

Newton poses a problem for Dawkins.
Newton is possibly the greatest scientist of all time, and was a strong believer in God. So how does Dawkins deal with Newton? He tries to neutralize Isaac Newton by claiming he was a fake, motivated by money. This is how he does it – the passage is in Dawkins' book The God Delusion. Dawkins starts with a quote from Bertrand Russell who said: "Intellectually eminent men disbelieve the Christian religion, but hide the fact, because they are afraid of losing their income." The next sentence is: "Newton was religious." The insinuation is that Newton was faking belief in God to get money. This is totally false.
If Newton was faking it, he really overdid it. He wrote to his friend Richard Bentley: "When I wrote my treatise [Principia Mathematica], I had an eye upon such principles as might work for the belief of a deity, and nothing can rejoice me more, than to find it useful for that purpose." He read the Bible every day; attacked and ridiculed atheists and wrote letters encouraging opponents of atheism. Newton wrote:
Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but cannot explain who set the planets in motion. God governs all things, and knows all that is or can be done. This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being.
And this: "It is the perfection of God's works, that they are all done with the greatest simplicity. He is the God of order and not of confusion." Galileo said: "The Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go." Galileo, Newton and Einstein all believed in God, therefore Dawkins' claim that science and religion are in conflict is nonsense.

The world around him was, in truth, just as complex as it always had been, of course, and ever would be. But those things didn’t seem to matter as much, because he had his father and his brothers, the sewers in which they lived, and a few static truths that guided him. Be compassionate towards all living things. Conduct himself with fairness. No hogging the GameDude.
He was so innocent. That made everything a lot easier.
But eventually he learned that his family was different, in the same way all outcast children do. He already knew a little about how human kids lived from the video games and books Dad had scrounged up for himself and his brothers, but it had kind of seemed like some kind of fantasy world, like with dragons and superheroes and stuff.
But it wasn’t, of course. That life was real, and Don and his brothers would never have it.
He learned that human kids didn’t live scrapyard to scrapyard, hiding away deep within the sewers, dependent on their limited network of stores with broken security cameras and dumpsters that were less likely to be filled with moldy leftovers---they lived in houses, and they got up in the morning every day when the sun rose, and they walked to school in their squeaking tennis shoes, and they learned. Of course, there were other human families besides their own that would have been pushed over the edge by just one unexpected problem, too, but all Don knew at the time was the idyllic notion of picket fences and playing under the afternoon sky that he’d seen in human media.
Master Splinter had assured him it didn’t matter and that Don would forge his own path, but he already knew that. He didn’t doubt whether he was able to do it. Obviously he would. He’d just become… acutely aware of the unfairness of it all.
He could only learn through reverse-engineering the leftover scraps that were no longer useful to humans. At first, he’d just enjoyed playing around with those old broken motherboards, poking and prodding at the details with a screwdriver that was half-crusted in black rust, but then one day he must have shifted some specific piece in some particular way that made the thing sputter to life.
Don doesn’t even remember what it was, really, just knows that all of this obviously must have started somewhere. But it had felt so intrinsic to him, it didn’t seem like a terribly significant realization. It just kind of happened, like it had been a part of him the whole time.
Now he was older, and it was because of him that his brothers had a home now, too. Not the same as human kids, not at all---but better. Fairer, at least a little.
He’d repaired the TV that they all liked to watch cartoons on, he’d set up a more efficient heating system to keep them from getting too cold in the winter, and he’d somehow managed to piecemeal some software from his limited collection of stained textbooks that could get a half-shattered router connected to the web, without needing dial-up.
Looking back on it, that was all obviously impressive, but it had been before The Water Pump Moment---or, at least, that’s what Mikey liked to call it.
It was two things:
First of all, it was the day that Don realized he wasn’t the only one reverse-engineering things. Sure, you could argue that science itself started because people like Aristotle and Galileo were reverse-engineering the world around them (and that was a reason that Don had so much reverence for them in particular), but that wasn’t The Moment.
To put it very simply, just as he’d done amidst guilty tears while explaining it all to Master Splinter: if Donny could hack into networks and break into hardware, then somebody else could do the same to them.
Don liked to think his childhood had been a positive one, but there was no denying that it had been a childhood laced with a constant undercurrent of fear. Dad had done his best to make sure they didn’t have to worry about being caught, about what they were going to eat tomorrow, or about what they would do if one of them got really sick; it always there, though, leaking through in slow drips, or ocassionally in cleaving waves when disaster struck.
But Don hadn’t fully comprehended it until he realized that he’d been endangering them for years, connecting them to the outside world with absolutely no defense. He’d been so insatiably excited to scratch that ever-present itch in his brain with more knowledge, more technology, more and more until he was bursting at the seams with it, spilling over the top, a glass overflowing, that he hadn’t even stopped to consider that it could be dangerous. And then he discovered that it was.
Looking back on it, Don might have viewed this realization as simply a formative moment, or even, potentially, a traumatic incident, but that still wouldn’t have been enough for it to be The Water Pump Moment. Which, of course, leads to the second thing:
It was the first time Don had ever created something that had never been seen before in the entire world, ever---and not out of creativity, but out of necessity.
In other words? Invention.
Not “poorly-drawn sketchbook pages filled with sci-fi weapons and giant cogs that would somehow make an airplane fly” inventions, or “wouldn’t it be cool if mobile phones could take pictures?” inventions, but actual, for real inventions, like “identify the problem, design a solution, write the code, and debug” inventions.
This came about two days after Donny had a pretty spectacular freak-out in which he disconnected every single appliance in their home and frantically hacked into them with terrifying ease. Eventually, he realized that this only served to make him spiral further while his poor, confused family watched on in baffled concern. From there, it was like he’d fallen into a sudden, serene trance, fueled by a consuming resolve to fix it.
Basically, while fiddling with their cool new network system, Don had discovered a security issue---one that could potentially put their family in danger if somebody topside so much as walked over their section of the sewer while looking for a connection, or even decided to attack a random home on a whim. Because all of the messages on the network were encrypted with a static key, it was easily cracked. It was just a matter of eavesdropping on transmissions, and you could decrypt every single message yourself. That meant somebody could easily find everything they looked at on the web, every TV channel they accessed, and, most worrying, every time one of them sent a distress signal on the little belt clips that Master Splinter had insisted Don recreate after watching a few episodes of Star Trek together.
Honestly, Don had no clue who would come up with something like that. Obviously you’re not supposed to send an RSVP whenever you plan to sneak around somewhere. Leo would be appalled to learn that something so un-ninja even existed in their home.
The obvious solution was to turn that static key into a dynamic one, though it also wouldn’t hurt to extend the character limit, even open it up to potentially include all ASCII values. Unfortunately, it wasn’t immediately clear how their own network was supposed to decode anything the actual key was constantly being randomized and rewritten. But if he gave each individual device a unique encryption key, then maybe…
Suffice to say, Don eventually figured it out. Nothing to worry about.
He later learned that he’d discovered most of those vulnerabilities before anyone else had, meaning there hadn’t been any danger in the first place.
“Oh…” Leo says. “Really, Don? But I remember how stressed you were about it.”
Raph looks up from his corner of the couch, nestled in with a blanket and book. “Yeah, I kinda remember that, too.”
“I dunno,” Mikey says, not looking away from his Half-Life match. “Isn’t that kinda dope? You figured it out before everyone else, bro, and you were, like, five.”
“Closer to nine, I think,” Don corrects.
Raph scoffs. “Still impressive as shell.”
“Regardless,” Don says, stretching out the world as he leans down to inspect the router, “I need to take this thing for a few minutes to make sure it can handle everything on the new security standard.”
Mikey makes a noise that activates every “little brother is annoying” synapse in Don’s brain, already predicting how this will affect his life in particular for the next few hours.
“Yes, that means you can’t go on the web until I’m done.”
“I’m in the middle of a match, dude!”
Look, as a fellow gamer, Don knows the feeling. Unfortunately for Mikey, Don also knows the feeling you get the day after you’ve been inconveniently interrupted during an online game: namely, nothing, because you’ve generally forgotten all about it by then.
“Yeaahh, he’s in the middle of a match, Don,” Raph needles from across the room, then shifts into a slightly more sincere tone. “Can’t ya wait a couple minutes for him to wrap it up? Take a sec, have a glass of water or something. Then Mikey can stop melting his brains, you can work on your protocol stuff, and everyone’s happy.”
“Whoa Raph, did I, like, do you a favor without realizing or something?”
“Yeah, whatever, Mikey, I’m just saying what I’m thinkin’.”
It’s worth considering that Raph wouldn’t bother siding with Mikey unless Don was being particularly stubborn without realizing it, but he really doesn’t think he’s being unreasonable here. Now that WPA2 is becoming a public thing, every extra second spent on “just one more” Half-Life deathmatch is an opportunity for someone to weasel their way into their network, which would pose a significantly bigger problem to them now than it would have a few years ago.
Don considers explaining this to his brothers, but figures it would be pointless. They already trust him to do his thing regardless of whether they know what his thing is, exactly, and the same goes for when they believe it’s not so urgent. Giving more specifics will only make them double down on their---and he says this lovingly---very misinformed view of the bigger picture.
“Unfortunately, I’d really like to get this over with sooner rather than later. I’ve been getting ready to do this for days, and I warned everyone that this would be happening.”
“But you didn’t say when!” Mikey cries, abandoning his game to take Don by the shoulders. “I thought maybe you meant, like, in a few weeks!”
“Well, since you’ve already left the chair, you’ve basically forfeited the game,” Don smiles apologetically before flicking the power button on the router. “Sorry, Mikey.”
Mikey sinks to the floor with a prolonged “Nooooooo!” as Don picks up the router and holds it up to his chest.
“Ruthless,” Leo comments.
Don laughs a little. “Nah, just being cautious. See you guys later.”
The last thing he hears before heading off to the lab is a “he’s not coming out for the next two days, is he?” from Raph and an already-mostly-recovered Mikey asking if anyone wants to play Tony Hawk instead. Well, it’s an offline game, so that’s fine with Don.
He thinks he may have caused his brothers to assume that he needed to upgrade to this new, public standard, but that’s not really true. The protocol Donny made when he was nine had already been on its way to being more advanced than the current iteration, and by now he’d certainly surpassed it with a series of upgrades he’d made over the years. As long as he could stay ahead of the game, they would be safe.
That’s why he never felt upset upon finding out that all his previous anguish hadn’t been necessary, since he was the only one who knew about those vulnerabilities anyway. Because someone would have to discover them, and all the subsequent ones in the future, and if that person wasn’t Donny, that meant it could be one of their enemies instead. So he has to stay on top of it. Always.
He’s sure that plenty of people are doing the same thing he’s about to do, trying to pry into the new system in search of something to exploit. They wouldn’t have any luck, since Don didn’t find anything too obvious, but the fact is this: those people are still going to come away with that experience full of ideas, half-baked theories, and potential threats building that could be used against Don’s family if he didn’t update this thing, like, now.
He stretches his arms above his head, interlocking his fingers and easing some of the ever-present strain on his wrists. He would have to think like someone who wanted to crack a dynamic key, who knew the ins and outs of WPA2, now, because that’s what his enemies could do.
Unlike it had been years ago, what he’s about to do to their network is no accident. He isn’t fiddling around with parts that he knows the function but doesn’t fully understand.
He understands it all very intimately, now.
Time to step into the deep end of the pool and push his own system to its limits.
“Alright,” he says to himself, “let’s get hacking!”
