Today I’m shining the spotlight on an incredible human, my best friend Jennie Scarbrough —whose birthday just happens to be today 🎉 Jennie is an ever changing multidisciplinary artist and entrepreneur. For the past 6 years she and I have co-created the Finger Lakes New York Gift Shop and Gallery, @HectorHandmade where we’re cooking up some merging and emerging dreamscapes steeped in feminine creativity. Creativity and art have always been a part of Jennie’s life, she has created watercolor art collections, painted album cover art, created photography collections, curated many beautiful spaces and amazing events, is now trying her hand at refinishing furniture, has always been a writer and up for learning and growing in new and beautiful ways and has worked very hard to lead an artful and thoughtful 40 years of life (we’re celebrating her today in Puerto Rico!) Jennie is also an airBnB Super Host and Vacation Rental Property Manager and lives and loves with her amazing husband Jason who is a Finger Lakes Realtor. Emile Blanchard (1881–1938) painted dramatic landscapes with trees as centerpieces. According to his wife, Bonnie, Branchard “loved to paint trees, snow, and sky, but humans did not interest him; he did not find them beautiful.”

”Branchard was born on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1881. His mother established Mme. Branchard’s rooming house for artists, knownas the House of Genius, near Washington Square. Educated by French nuns, Branchard worked as a truck driver, stevedore, and for the Home Defense Force duringWorld War I. He developed tuberculosis while patrolling the New York waterfront, which ended his formal employment. During his extended period of requiredconvalescence, he took up painting. He had no art training, but his stepfather had studied painting throughout his childhood, and Branchard had watched him paint.Branchard began painting using paints and brushes left behind by one of his mother’s lodgers.Painting only from memory, and favoring oil on canvas or board, Branchard first exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists in New York (1919). The galleryowner, Stephen Bourgeois, “discovered” Branchard at that exhibition, and showed the artist’s paintings from 1919 to 1932."

Edith Halpert (1900-1970) opened her now legendary space, the Downtown Gallery, in 1926. It was the first commercial art exhibit space in NYC’s Greenwich Village and Halpert was the first significant gallerist to pave the wave for other women leaders in the art field. As an outsider—a Russian immigrant, a woman, and a Jew—for over 40 years, she was a leading authority of America’s artistic landscape and a name to remember.

Some antique hair jewelry was also made as a tribute to a living person, and the hair used in the piece might have been a lock of the person's own hair or a lock of the hair of someone they were close to.
