"Maybe You are a vampire, and with damaged wings, You sleep, locked in a stone coffin. Dreaming of the heaven You could never go back to"
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
I found and old sketch of Elzie that I drew several years ago and never finished, and decided it would be a great idea to turn it into a small pixel art animation for this Halloween.
Elzie is a character I created for Vampire's Bit, a small project I worked on for a Game Jam a long time ago.
Once again I limited myself to using only 16 colors, and all of them come from PICO-8's color palettes (both its main palette and the second hidden one).

My entry for Nokia art Jam 2 hosted by @Polyducks The Jam consisted on making a mockup image following Nokia 3410 technical limitations.
Tumblr media
I followed the optional theme "Lost games for the Nokia 3410" and imagined how a very simple, but cute looking RPG could be. I had a lot of fun working on it, and once again, doing 1-bit art was a very interesting challenge.
There is a lot of amazing entries for the Jam so You should definitely check more of them!

More Castlevania today!! Paradoxigent (@lightspiritdev) commissioned me to do the cover art for a new reorchestration of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge's music. This time was Praying Hands, the theme for the Cloud Castle. Looking through the little referecens there is for the castles, the in-game graphics, and the artwork made for the American and European releases of the game, made me realize how futuristic, and even alien, this castle looks... I wish we could get more info on it, and about this very underrated game in general, as it made me incredibly curious. Again, for extra fun, this piece follows Game Boy Color's technical limitations closely, and while it would be very tricky to show that many tiles on screen on a real system, is not impossible either.

Some of my recent pixel art work for VanillaBeast: Retro Knock Out!
This is one of my favorite pieces I've made for this project, and also one of the most detailed ones I've worked on so far.
After receiving lots of positive feedback on our last demo we are launching a Kickstarter to help get Retro Knock Out! ported to consoles.
Check the Kickstarter page to learn more about the game itself, the people working on it and all the amazing rewards Vanilla Gaming Company has prepared for its backers, some of them featuring more artwork I made for the project. Many rewards are limited in quantity so stop by and grab them while they're available.
Every bit of help is greatly appreciated! And even if you're unable to pledge, share it out with anyone that could be interested!

Had the luck to work again on a commission for Virtual YouTuber Kumamori Freya. This time is a small animation, that she's currently using as the End Card for her streams. The animation uses a custom 16 color palette, heavily inspired by PICO-8's, but using softer colors to fit the mood of the scene better. Don't forget to check Freya's content too! Her streams are always fun and she is an incredibly good singer!

Happy Friday The 13th!!!
Here's a sample of the sprite work I did for VanillaBeast: Retro Knock Out!
Mason Gorehees, our parody of Jason, sporting a color palette based on how Jason looked on Friday The 13th for NES. I love working with very limited palettes, specially NES/FAMICOM inspired ones, so Mason was one the characters I enjoyed working on the most!
Are you brave enough to defeat Mason? Get the game and find out!

Made a new low-poly model, since the previous one has received a lot of likes recently! This time I picked Shishiro Botan, as a small nod to a friend that likes her, and this style of models, a lot. I followed the rules set by zen's #256fes challenge again, meaning that the model can't have more than 256 polygons, and can only use a single 256 x 256 pixels texture. I still have a lot to learn about 3D modeling, but I'm very happy with the results, and also with how my workflow has improved when compared to the my previous attempts at it. Hopefully I'll make more models like these ones as soon as I have more free time.

Small Game Boy Color styled portrait commisioned by Virtual YouTuber Kumamori Freya.
While the portrait is pretty big in size, and would take up most of the screen, making it unpractical for a game, it still follows Game Boy Color's technical limitations closely, meaning you could easily get to display it on the actual system.
Don't forget to check Freya's content! She's very fun, sweet and talented! You won't regret it!

I have been very busy lately with work stuff lately, so I've had very little time to draw make new stuff to share here. So in the meantime, I will share some older pieces I never posted by themselves before. A small mock-up I made some time ago for a Yankee themed Beat 'em up game I'd love to work on someday. Heavily inspired by one of my favorite franchises, the River City/Kunio-kun Series, and a bit of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game too.
At some point I did several animations for the characters, and some coding tests too, but due to a lack of time and a very high scope I decided to keep it as a mockup only, at least for the time being. Hope some day I can approach this project again and turn it into something real.

First post of 2022!! A small pixel art animation I made for Newgrounds' Pixel Day Competition. It won the First Place on the Art Category.
The piece is based on one of my previous artwork. Since it's one of my favorite illustrations so far, I decided to turn it into pixel art and add a little bit of animation to make it more lively. As an extra challengue I only used 16 colors and all of them come from PICO-8's color palettes (both its main palette and the second hidden one).
Seems 2022 will be a very busy year for me, since there is a lot of things I'm planning to do, and some projects that I'm already working on. Hopefully that means I'll have a lot of things to share this year!
You can see the original post at Newgrounds here.

Back into a Castlevania mood! Something I did a couple of months ago but that I forgot to share here. I got inspired by the amazing work done by Pigsy and Pyron on their Castlevania: Symphony of the Night port for the SEGA MEGA DRIVE/GENESIS, and decided to take their idea of a 16bit version of the game a step further by making this mockup of how an 8bit version of it would look. While it may be a little bit unpractical for an actual game, due to a big amount of sprites on screen, and the flickering that would entail, the mockup follows perfectly all the technical limitations of a NES/FAMICON game with the enhanced attributes of the MMC5 chip, meaning its possible to have this level of detail on the real system. As soon as I get some extra free time, I'd like to make more 8-bit demake mockups like this one, not only for SoTN, but for a lot of other games I love.

Something I did a couple of days ago for Pixel Dailies The #PixelRemaster challenge consisted on redrawing a Castlevania screenshot. I decided to go for a somewhat realistic look, using dark colors to get a serious and scary mood, but at the same time I followed all FAMICOM/NES technical limitations.
Tumblr media
I also took the chance to do a small upgrade to another Castlevania screenshot I redrew for Pixelation's Comercial Critique Challenge some time ago, since I thought it would be great if both of them looked like they came from the same game.

Something new I did for Pixel Dailies's #PixelRemaster challenge. The challenge consisted on redrawing a screenshot from Ninja Gaiden's iconic opening scene. Ninja Gaiden is another game and franchise I love a lot, so even if I did it in a hurry, since I have been a little bit busy lately, I didn't want to miss the chance of giving it a try.
This time I went for a Game Boy and Game Boy Color inspired look.

I can finally show this one!
A small preview of the pixel art background, sprite and animation work I have been doing for the Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! parody/homage level for Vanilla Gaming Company's game Vanilla Beast: Ace in the Hole.
The game will have a huge amount of minigames/levels, each of them in the hands of a different artist, inspired by various classic games like The Punisher, Outrun, and Double Dragon, but also referencing movies, music and general pop culture from the 80's.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is a game I used to play a lot as a kid, and that I still love and enjoy today, so getting to work on reimagining it has been a wonderful job!
You can read more about this project here: • First Gameplay Trailer • Wishlist on Steam • Kickstarter (starts on March 15th)

My entry for for twitter’s #256fes challenge. The challenge’s rules are that your model can't have more than 256 polygons, and can only use a single 256 x 256 pixels texture.
This is one of my first attempts at 3D modeling, and my first time using a pixel art-styled texture. Since I usually find 3D a little overwhelming I don’t do it too often, but this challenge was an amazing way to step out of my comfort zone, try something different, and learn a lot of new things. Getting everything to look the way I wanted while still under the 256 tris limit was more challenging that expected, but I’m really happy with the results. I also wanted to do some retro-styled Korone fanart for a while, since she enjoys playing retro games a lot, and this challege was also the perfect chance for me to do it.
Bdotjs rigged and animated the model as an experiment, and the results were surprisingly good, specially considering how I never thought about making it rig nor animation friendly and only focused on making her look as pretty as possible under the challenge’s limitations.
I had a lot of fun taking a part on this, so I plan to do more 3D stuff in the future too. • You can see and download the model here • You can see Bdotjs’ work with the model here • Korone’s YouTube channel here

Seems I have been stuck in a vampire hunter mood recently because here's another little Castlevania-related thing I made this week. My friend Paradoxigent (@lightspiritdev) commissioned me to do the cover art for his great orchestral arrangement of Psychotic Warrior, from Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge. You can check the arrangement (and the rest of his amazing work) here: · Paradoxigent's Soundcloud · Paradoxigent's YouTube Even though I wasn't paying special attention to technical limitations while working on it, turns out the image falls under Game Boy Color's limitations, meaning that it could work in a game for the platform.
