Boost Curb Appeal
A new garage door can dramatically elevate the appearance of your home. Garage door replacement Seattle provides an opportunity to refresh the look of your home with modern styles and designs. Whether you prefer a classic look or a contemporary design, new garage doors can complement your home’s architecture and make a strong first impression.

A new garage door often comes with updated security features. Professional garage door replacement Seattle services can install doors equipped with advanced locking mechanisms and technology to safeguard your home against potential break-ins. Enhanced security is a crucial benefit for homeowners seeking peace of mind.
What to Consider When Choosing a Replacement
Material Options
When opting for a garage door replacement Seattle, you have several material choices, each with its own benefits:
Steel: Durable and low maintenance, steel doors offer excellent security and insulation.
Wood: Provides a classic and elegant look, but requires more maintenance to prevent weathering.
Fiberglass: Lightweight and resistant to dents, fiberglass doors are also insulated.
Aluminum: Rust-resistant and versatile, aluminum doors are ideal for coastal areas.
Design and Style
The design of your new garage door should match your home’s style. Whether you’re interested in a traditional raised panel, a contemporary glass door, or a carriage-style door, garage door replacement Seattle professionals can help you choose a design that complements your home’s aesthetic.
Garage Door Opener
Modern garage doors often come with advanced openers. Consider opting for smart garage door openers that can be controlled via smartphone apps for added convenience. Ensure that your new door is compatible with your chosen opener during the garage door replacement Seattle process.
Budget and Costs
Understanding the costs associated with garage door replacement Seattle is crucial. Factors affecting the price include the door material, design complexity, and any additional features. Getting quotes from multiple contractors and understanding what’s included in the price can help you make an informed decision.
The Process of Garage Door Replacement
Consultation and Assessment
The first step in garage door replacement Seattle is to consult with a professional. They will assess your current door, discuss your preferences, and provide recommendations based on your needs and budget.
Selection and Ordering
Once you’ve chosen the style, material, and features, the next step is ordering your new garage door. The contractor will handle the ordering process and ensure that the door meets your specifications.
Installation
Professional installation is key to ensuring that your new garage door functions correctly and lasts for years. Experienced garage door replacement Seattle technicians will handle the installation process, including removing the old door, installing the new one, and testing it to ensure everything is working perfectly.

Warnings:Fluff. Steamy smut. Breeding kink. there are hints of her being a housewife. I think that about covers all of it.

As the sun slowly started to set the pacific northwest region of the us.
Matt slowly made his way into your guys shared seattle home through the garage. He shuts the garage door taking off his shoes in the mud room that was when he enter also hanging up his keys on the hook near the door.
He makes his way toward the kitchen where he knew he could find you as when he had later practices he would always come home from them to find you cooking dinner to which has made you gain the nickname of his little housewife.
As He walked to the kitchen, He could already smell what you were cooking but couldn't figure out what you were cooking so once he made it into the kitchen.
The center made his way to your shorter figure that was leaned over the stove stirring something. He took a moment to just admire you also taking in the fact you were wearing one of his shirts until his thoughts went somewhere else.
He imagined coming home to you taking care of his kids. You both have talked about having kids even before you both got married but since he's nearly thirty. He's been thinking more about it.
Matt wraps his arms around your body pulling you close to his processing to bend down which puts him at a weird angle so he could rest his chin on the top of your head to watch what you were doing at the stove.
He bend down more processing to move your hair to the side that was covering your neck so he could have access to your exposed skin starting to leave soft kisses on your neck.
You let out a soft giggle not use to him being super cuddly as he's usually like that when he is tired or drunk so you decided to speak up and ask him whats going on.
"Honey." you spoke finally breaking the comfortable silence that had filled the kitchen to which he went "hm" against your neck continuing to kiss your neck holding you close to his large warm figure.
"What's got you all cuddly." you said with a small giggle enjoying the affection he was giving to which the canadian answered bluntly with somewhat with a smirk which you could feel it against your neck.
"you just look so.... domestic. just standing here cooking while waiting for me to get home. it makes me think about me coming home to you taking care of my babies." Matt spoke this into your ear which made you clench your thighs.
He slowly took his hands that were around you to go down to the bottom of the shirt of his you were wearing moving his hands so they can go under the shirt and started to rub your bare sides with his hands.
You shivered a little bit due to the coldness of his wedding band. he starts to move his left hand to rest on you stomach to which he whispers "you'd look so pretty full with my babies."
Matt's touch on your stomach sent a jolt of anticipation through your body, igniting a primal fire within. As his thumb trailed gently over the subtle curve where your uterus nestled beneath the surface, a quiet gasp escaped your lips.
But suddenly, his movements shifted. With a swift motion, he moved away, his hand reaching towards the stove's switch. The click of the knob heightened the tension in the room, as he swiftly turned you around to face him. Your bodies remained inches apart, the air thick with heated energy, as his warm breath tickled your earlobe
He was so close to you to the point where you could smell the tom ford cologne he had put on after showering at practice. It was the one you had gotten him for birthday a couple of years back.
Matt spoke into your ear, his voice a seductive whisper that sent shivers down your spine. "Imagine how full your breasts would grow," he said, his words dripping with desire as his warm breath grazed your skin.
The mention of your changing body added fuel to the fire burning between you. With a subtle smirk, Matt's hand trailed from your stomach to your waist, his touch electrifying every inch of your being as he slowly pulled you closer.
As he drew you near, his lips brushed against the shell of your ear, his voice low and husky. "I want to explore every inch of you," he murmured, his fingers lightly grazing the curve of your hips.
A surge of anticipation surged through you, your heart racing with a mixture of excitement and longing. The intensity of Matt's touch and his words spurred you on, reaching out to trace your fingers along the contours of his chest, desperate to feel his own desire rising alongside yours.
The energy between you crackled, igniting a fierce passion that threatened to consume everything in its wake. With each passing moment, the world around you faded into insignificance, leaving only the two of you caught in a mesmerizing dance of desire and exploration.
As the passion between you both grew more intense, The hockey player lifted you to your feet and carrying to the bedroom. He set you down gently on the bed and gazed into her eyes, his desire for you burning brightly.
Without a word, he began to explore every inch of your body, tracing his fingers over your curves and kissing you deeply. You moaned softly as his touch sent shivers down your spine.
As Matt's hands drifted lower, your heart skipped a beat. you knew what was coming next, and your body responded eagerly to his touch. you lifted your arms, allowing him to pull your shirt of his shirt over your head, revealing your bare skin to his hungry gaze.
As Matt's eyes drifted downwards, he couldn't help but notice that you weren't wearing a bra. His heart skipped a beat as he took in the sight of your breast.
Without a word, Matt reached out to touch you, his fingers trailing over the soft curves of your breasts as you moaned softly. He leaned in to kiss you deeply.
Without a word, Matt sat up on his knees, his hands moving to remove his shirt. you watched in awe as he revealed his chiseled chest and broad shoulders, your heart racing as you took in the sight of him.
Next came his pants, which he discarded with your shirt that was lying on the floor. He removes his briefs then slowly moves his hand down removing your underwear throwing them to the side.
The hockey player watching you in awe as you take his cock into your hands driving the head of his cock over your cilt making your body shake.
You let out a soft groan smiling to yourself as your cunt adjusted to his size.
Matt presses his forehead against yours looking into your eyes as he let everything else in his mind fade away into it just being about you and him starting a family.
He watched as your eyes moved from his to adjust your eyes to the moonlight that was shine in on you both to which made him look so perfect.
"i want you to put a baby in me Matt." you pleaded looking back into his eyes clenching around his cock. "want be full of your cum."
The hockey player thought it was so hot to hear these words fall from your lips. "I'm going to fuck my pretty little housewife. so hard she forgets her own name."
As gentle as Matt's words were you knew it was a serious promise as he spoke the same words to you on your wedding night. He started to slowly move inside of you wrapping your legs around his waist.
Matt's hands found their way to the sides of your head, his fingers gently cradling your delicate skull. As he leaned in to kiss you deeply, you felt a shiver run through your body. you closed your eyes.
As your lips parted, Matt's chain dangled and swung between you both.
Matt's rhythm was slow and deliberate, his movements measured and precise. you felt yourself being pulled deeper into his embrace, your body responding to his every touch.
The hockey player then became desperate to fulfill his desires of seeing you full as he move one hand to grip the headboard the other staying by your head as he slowly started to go harder watching as his cock bottomed you out hitting your g-spot.
Which made you start filling the room with your moans.
Matt took the hand that was on the pillow cupping the back of your head to pull you into a kiss letting out a soft chuckle. " I bet you've been thinking about me filling you with my baby." he spoke up to you watching your eyes roll back.
You slowly took your hand down between your bodies finding your clint "want it so bad" you felt you eyes rolls back and your breathing become irregular as you struggled to focus.
Those words were like honey to your husband. "wont be able to last you speaking like that." Matt groaned in your ear as he felt your cunt clench around him.
You both started to feel the room grow hot as your legs began to shake. sounds of slapping skin echo between the both of you as your eyebrows clenched up.
"go ahead princess" Matt ordered as his cock could only handle so much of this before he came himself. "milk my cock sweet girl." His lips went to your neck leaving kisses on your neck.
low grumbles left your lips as you clenched yourself around his cock in spurts as you continue the movements of your finger on your cilt struggling to stay focused.
"shit baby." you let out as your vision went blurry making you shut your eyes. "dont stop" you pleaded making him pull you into a hungry kiss.
Matt wasn't that far behind you as his chest began to grow tight sweat dripping from his forehead but at the moment he was focused on fucking you through your orgasm "such a good girl" He praised as the coil in his stomach snapped. "fuck!" putting both his hand on the headboard.
your cunt coated with his release making smile as he continued to slowly fuck you making sure it stays in and gently kisses your lips with a small smile.
He gently flips you both over so that you are now on top of him but with his cock still inside. "gotta make sure it accepts." he softly teases kissing your head as you are now cock warming him.
Matt pulls the covers over the both of you gently kissing your head as you snuggled into him and starts rubbing your back from under the covers just enjoying this moment that was filled with love.

DATING VINNIE HACKER
Tumblr media
hcs about what i think it’d be like to date vin <3
warnings; slight mentions of sex, boner mention, mention of wanting to have kids, i think that’s all but as always, lmk if i missed anything (:
since vinnie is so well known you two decided to keep your relationship private, but not a secret. fans know he’s no longer single, they just don’t know who he’s dating.
the two of you will post pictures together, but not of faces, just like hands or the back of each others heads , kinda like if you were to soft launch the relationship without actually doing so.
the roommates LOVE you, as you with them. sometimes you love them more than vinnie.
he was so nervous to have you meet his parents and brother, but the minute you stepped in the door you were already engulfed in hugs by all three family members.
when vinnie would skate regularly, he’d take you with to skate with him / teach you how.
sometimes he’ll take you on trips, like if he has events to go to out of the country, he’ll take you with.
since it’s just the two of you in the hotel rooms, you know his horny ass will be fucking you all night.
when you can’t attend the events with him and both of you really miss each other, phone sex is suddenly your guys’ best friend.
sometimes when you’re over at his house and he’s streaming, you’ll accidentally start talking, forgetting that he’s streaming, and the chat will go crazy, asking vinnie who is in his room.
on days where neither of you are busy, the two of you will have a movie day, cuddling each other (hera joins you guys too ofc).
this man has the BIGGEST heart ever, so on holidays such as valentine’s day, he’ll go all out and plan a very cute date for the two of you, giving you the most cute gifts as well.
when you guys go back to seattle together he’ll take you around the city and show you all his favorite places he’d go to when he was in high school.
sometimes you’ll watch him and jett work on the cars in the garage and you can’t help but think of how hot your boyfriend looks while doing so.
vinnie knows you absolutely LOVE his long hair, so when he got it cut a little shorter than usual for the first time while being with you, he was so scared you wouldn’t find him attractive anymore.
“baby, you look so hot.” you’d say to him as you run your hand through his hair. the poor boy blushes so hard his cheeks are bright red.
he also knows how much you love his facial hair, sometimes he’ll shave it just to piss you off.
“vin! why’d you do that, you look so good with it!” you’d whine once you see that it’s no longer there.
when he leaves it for a few days you’ll get so excited, wondering when he’ll shave (you secretly wish it won’t be for awhile).
sometimes you’ll get him all riled up by whispering in his ear while with his friends and say, “better keep that for awhile, i love the way it feels when you’re in between my thighs.”
the poor boy will flush bright red and have to make an excuse to use the bathroom to get rid of his boner.
vinnie is for sure just a bit jealous. when out in public together you guys tend to keep the PDA to a minimum, but when he sees a guy that keeps checking you out, he’ll pull you in by the waist and kiss you, making the guy scoff and walk away.
same with you, you know girls are swooning for the boy, so when you hear a girl try to flirt with him, you’ll wrap your arms around his waist and kiss him.
one day vinnie had walked into his room and saw you cradling hera in your arms, kissing her head and the minute he saw that — instant baby fever.
“let’s make a baby.” he whispered in your ear, you just laughed.
“we’re too young for a baby right now, vin.”
“so you’re saying we can in the future?” his eyes lit up so bright you couldn’t help but smile. you told him maybe.
you would admit that he would make a great dad, he’s already an amazing cat dad to hera.
when your guys’ anniversary comes around he goes all out, getting reservations at your favorite restaurant, taking you out stargazing after, and just putting so much effort into it.
you’ll wear his tshirts so often they basically become yours, but vinnie doesn’t mind, he absolutely loves seeing you in them.
when the newest purgatory drops release, he’s sure to get you free merch for being his girl, and you love him for that.
besides all the sex jokes and him basically having a dirty mind 90% of the time, he’s the most caring and sweet boy ever, you can’t believe you get to call him yours.
he can’t believe he gets to call you his girl either, the two of you are so grateful for each other
first hc post i hope you liked it !! i got a little carried away LOL but as always, requests are open !! <3

Cassian
Despite having played the Kraken in Seattle once last season, Cassian has to admit it’s pretty nice being on the home side of Climate Pledge Arena. Sure, playing in a place like Madison Square Garden most nights was a dream, one he held since he was just a boy, but there’s something to be said about all the upgrades and modernity that a newer arena has to offer.
Following the director of team services out of the elevator, they come to a set of frosted glass doors, the Kraken logo split between the two. As they step closer, the doors automatically slide open, revealing the locker room, and Cassian barely swallows down an impressed whistle. It’s certainly spacious, even for an NHL locker room, LED lights and the Kraken logo displayed on the ceiling. At least, he won’t have to worry about stepping on it here.
“Valdarez.”
Cassian turns just in time to see a tall man walking toward him, blonde hair cut short and beard trimmed to just a stubble along his cheeks. His grin is wide and easy, revealing the chipped upper tooth on the left side. It’s easy enough for Cassian to recognize the captain of the team, Fionn Donoch. He still remembers watching him lift the Cup back when Cassian was just a teen.
“Wanted to make sure I came down to meet you myself,” Fionn continues, holding out his hand for Cassian to shake.
“Are you sure you didn’t just want to come down and remind me who’s really in charge here?”
Fionn laughs good naturedly at the joke, slapping Cassian on the back. “You’re going to fit right in here. So, what do you think so far?”
Cassian glances around the locker room again, thinking back to the practice facilities he’d toured earlier. “Yeah, it’s pretty nice, all the fancy arena upgrades.”
“Definitely not the worst place to call home, right? Listen, they don’t have the ice down yet, but I can still show you if you want.”
At Cassian’s nod, Fionn leads the way out of the locker room. They pass through a glass lined hallway, Fionn explaining how during game days, it’s lit with blue LED lights, how fans typically line the other side, banging the glass and getting the boys going. Then they’re stepping onto the home bench and the arena floor, and Cassian gets to appreciate what the view will be from ice level. He turns slowly in a circle, taking in the stands, the scoreboards, the afternoon light streaming through the wall of windows.
He takes a deep breath in, and for a moment, he can almost hear it. The blare of the goal horn. The roar of the crowd. He can almost feel the cool bite off the ice against his cheeks. Can almost feel the surety, the peace that comes from having it beneath his skates, from the comfortable weight of a stick in his hands.
“Have you met with Miller yet?”
Cassian shakes his head of the daydream, turning back toward Fionn. “Yeah, I met with the whole staff earlier this morning.”
He and Fionn continue to talk shop, talk the system, before making their way together toward the garage and their cars. Or, in Cassian’s case, his rental car until he’s able to secure a new apartment and get all his things shipped out. He supposes he should check in with that realtor Eris connected him with again.
“If you need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out,” Fionn tells him, offering another easy grin as he hits the remote of his car. “Even if it’s just food recommendations.”
“Thanks, but I’m actually meant to be meeting up with a friend after this. She’s going to give me the whole tour of the city and all that.”
“She, huh? Let me know if I need to pass her number along to the wife. I don’t think they’ve done dues yet for this season.”
Cassian chuckles at the teasing smirk on Fionn’s face, the implication of his words. But then he thinks back to Nesta. Thinks back to the photos of her Instagram, to those icy blue eyes and that damn expression on her face. He can’t deny there’s been a low, simmering heat in his gut all morning, sparking at the fact he finally gets to meet Nesta, finally gets to witness that fire in person.
“Only if I’m lucky.”
~ * * * ~
Large, looping letters declare Grumpy & Sunshine Books above the door, the window display to the left of the door decked out with an artsy display of flowers and hanging book pages. Cassian glances down at the phone in his hand, the Map displayed on the screen there, confirming he’s in the right place. With a nod, he pockets his phone and presses forward, stepping through the front door.
The scent of paper and ink greets him as soon as Cassian steps inside, along with something vanilla. A candle that he can’t see? There’s a table display of books immediately inside, and Cassian casts them a cursory glance, taking in more looping text and what looks to be a variety of cartoon characters on the covers. He weaves around shelves and more table displays, past a wall of vines and succulents and a pink neon sign declaring Most ardently.
And at the very center of the store, Cassian finds the register and the woman he’s looking for bent over a book behind it. Cassian had known Nesta was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen since he first saw her picture, but seeing her in person is another thing altogether. Seeing her standing there in front of him almost has him wanting to drop down to his knees right there in the middle of the bookstore.
Her hair is braided back in an intricate updo, but with her head bent down, a strand of golden brown hair tumbles down her temple and kisses her jawline. Deft fingers brush the hair aside and behind her ear absently, further revealing the sharp cut of her cheekbones. When she turns the page of her book, her lips part, eyebrows jumping, and Cassian thinks he might give anything to see her eyes properly, to see if they spark and flare along with whatever she’s just read.
He’d give anything to have those eyes on him.
“Reading on the job?”
Nesta snaps her book closed, her attention finally rising, and Cassian gets his first look at those blue eyes he’s so often thought about. They’re a similar shade to Feyre’s, sure, and yet so different somehow. They seem to burn with a silver fire that leaves the cool shade of them looking like a storm roiled sea, especially when that gaze narrows on him, her lips pinching into a scowl.
Cassian doesn’t let the reaction deter him. If anything, it only stokes the embers in his own chest, beckoning him into the flames. He closes the final few steps between them, leaning against the register counter with a smirk.
“Nesta Archeron,” Cassian greets.
“Cassian Valdarez.”
His name falling from her lips shouldn’t sound as sweet as it does, especially with the clipped tone she speaks it, but a zing of electricity still skitters down Cassian’s spine nonetheless. What would it take to have her saying his name again? To have her sighing it? For him to taste it?
“So you do know me, then?” Cassian drawls, daring to glance down at her book. A Calanmai Secret. “And yet, you couldn’t answer any of my texts.”
Nesta crosses her arms, leveling him with a hard look that Cassian is sure is meant to send him running. “Most people would take that as a hint. Yet here you are. In my bookstore.”
“Feyre said you’d show me around the city.”
“Feyre asked me to show you around. I don’t recall ever agreeing.”
“I’m starting to think you’re the grumpy on the sign outside,” Cassian chuckles softly, hoping to at least earn the hint of a smile at his teasing joke.
Instead, Nesta settles both hands on the register counter, leaning forward. “Buy something. Or get out of my store.”
Cassian tilts his head, taken back by the harsh reaction. He’ll clearly have to work harder to get her to smile or laugh. Challenge accepted. Already, he can hear Az’s voice in his mind, making a dry comment about his taste in women. Already, he can see the way Rhys would roll his eyes.
“Fine,” Cassian says easily with a shrug, stepping back from the register counter. “The historical section is…?”
Nesta merely points to a bookshelf to his left, so Cassian turns his attention toward it. He grabs the first book within reach, the spine a blue and green. He’s intent on striding right back up to Nesta and proudly purchasing the book, but then he catches sight of the cover. Of the shirtless man that takes up the cover, the model’s skin clearly oiled up so every ridge of muscle is on full display. A tartan hangs low on the man’s hips, and just above the man the title is scrawled, Highland Escape.
“This… is not what I meant.”
Rather than direct him toward the historical fiction section, Nesta crosses her arms across her chest, her lips tugging up into a smirk. And, oh, there’s a real challenge blazing in her gaze now, that fire that had called to Cassian even in photo form sparking in her blue eyes. It’s beautiful, that look on her face, daring him to play.
He glances around the bookstore again, this time with fresh eyes. The greenery on the walls, the different table displays, the pink neon sign with an Austen quote. Of course. He’d heard of bookstores like these, ones that specialize in romance novels.
When he looks back toward Nesta, she has that same daring expression on her face, her smirk already starting to grow as though she’s won. As beautiful as it is, as beautiful as she is, Cassian refuses to back down. Heat flares through his chest as he fights back a smirk of his own, more than ready to keep this game of theirs going. He clears his throat and turns back to the shelf, sliding the book in his hand back into place. He takes his time reading the different titles along the spine before finally settling on a different book, tugging it free and sidling back up at the register counter.
“I’ll take this one,” Cassian tells Nesta with a grin, sliding the book across to her.
Nesta hums, glancing down toward the book he’s selected. Viking Bride. Cassian waits for the mask to slip, to see a hint of a reaction take over her face, but she’s nothing but cool and silent as she rings him up. The transaction complete, she tucks his receipt into the cover of the book, sliding it back over to him.
“Have a nice day,” Nesta offers, her tone mockingly sweet.
Cassian reaches for the book, his fingers brushing along Nesta’s own until she snatches her hand away. “You know, I’m beginning to think you don’t like me.”
Nesta snorts and rolls her eyes. “Whatever gave you that impression?”
“Oh, yeah, Nes, you’re a real ray of sunshine right now.”
“Don’t call me that.”
There’s no stopping Cassian’s smirk at earning that reaction, a little tidbit he tucks away, even as he continues, “but it’s not really fair, is it? I mean, you don’t even know me. This is literally our first time ever meeting. What could I have possibly done?”
Nesta’s face falls, a new emotion flashing through her blue eyes. It’s certainly the cool, haughty mask slipping away, but not how Cassian wanted. He frowns at the sudden change, but before he can even begin to attempt to decipher what that emotion is, what that expression could mean, Nesta turns away from him.
“If I give you a tour of the city, will you leave me alone after that?”
~ * * * ~
Nesta
Nesta doesn’t know what she expected. She knew, in the back of her mind, that despite never responding to a single one of Cassian’s texts, that that wouldn’t be the last of things. But she can’t say she expected him to show up at her bookstore. Didn’t expect him to stride in with a smirk and an easy confidence, to almost proudly buy a viking romance novel.
She wants to hate that he still looks as good as the last time she saw him at Feyre’s engagement party. His hair is loose, dark curls hanging around his temples and tumbling down to his shoulders. His eyes are a hazel as bright as Nesta remembers, a maze of greens and golds that seem to spark with a flickering flame. And that cocksure smile has no damn right being as attractive as it is.
She wants to hate the way he didn’t back down from her ire, from all the quips she threw his way. Instead, he only seemed to rise to meet her, seemed to enjoy it as though it was a game between them. She wants to deny the way his fingers brushing against hers sent a shiver ricocheting up her arm and down her spine.
And he doesn’t even remember her.
She’d felt stupid that night in New York, but she feels even more stupid now. She certainly hadn’t expected an apology or anything, but this is like a slap in the face. And on the heels of that churning feeling roiling through her gut is anger. It burns red hot through her veins, flaring like a wildfire that licks between her ribs.
“If I give you a tour of the city, will you leave me alone after that?”
Cassian clears his throat awkwardly, that cocksure smirk finally slipping. “You want me to leave you alone?”
“What are you doing here?”
Nesta’s attention snaps toward the new voice, finding Emerie standing just inside the door, her brown eyes narrowed on Cassian.
“Hey, hows it going?” Cassian answers easily despite Emerie’s clipped question. He holds his hand out toward her to shake, but Emerie doesn’t take it. “I’m Cassian.”
“I know who you are,” Emerie tells him airily, stepping behind the register counter.
She reaches out as she passes, fingers curling around Nesta’s wrist and squeezing lightly. It’s a silent question out of view of Cassian’s eyes, to check that she’s alright. Nesta meets her best friend’s gaze and offers the smallest hint of a nod.
“You do? Are you a hockey fan, then?” Cassian asks, unaware of the silent conversation happening without him.
Emerie snorts at the implication. “No. There’s only one hockey fan in this bookstore, and it’s not me.”
“I feel like you don’t like me either…” Cassian comments quietly, tilting his head slightly. “Is everyone the grumpy on the sign? You might want to consider a new name if there’s no sunshine.”
“Gwyn is the sunshine, and trust me when I say you’re lucky that you don’t have to deal with her.”
Nesta has to press her lips together to keep from laughing at the way Cassian’s eyes widen slightly in horror. It’s certainly not a misplaced expression. Gwyn was one of Nesta’s first friends when she first moved to Seattle, and while the redhead is one of the kindest people Nesta has ever met, she’s also the fiercest. Beneath all the bright smiles and easy laughs there’s a viciousness that can and will be released, especially when it comes to those Gwyn cares about.
“I don’t know. You said there’s one hockey fan, right? And I’m guessing it’s this Gwyn. Maybe I do want to meet her. We can talk all things Kraken.”
“Gwyn’s a Nashville fan,” Nesta informs Cassian. “They’re her hometown team.”
And dedicated to her hometown team she is. Nesta doesn’t think she’ll ever forget the first time she and Gwyn went to grab dinner at a sport’s bar, the first time witnessing the way Gwyn ranted and shouted at the large television on the wall.
Nesta waits for Cassian’s face to drop again at this newest tidbit, but what she doesn’t expect is for his grin to grow wider and stretch across his face, for the golds of his eyes to glint. He looks like a child that just stepped foot into a candy store, like this is exactly what he was waiting for, and it has Nesta frowning in confusion.
“My brother plays for the Preds. Azriel. You know, if she wanted, I could probably get her a signed jersey.”
“Gwyn would absolutely lose her mind,” Emerie comments under her breath.
“And what’s the price for this signed jersey?” Nesta dares to ask, squinting suspiciously at Cassian.
Cassian shrugs a shoulder, all faux innocence. “Well, you clearly don’t want to give me a tour, so how about just dinner? You can give me a list of your recommendations then.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“A dinner for a jersey. Sounds like a fair trade to me. Don’t you think, Nes?”
Nesta sighs, shaking her head. “Fine. One dinner and in exchange, you’ll get a Nashville jersey signed. By the whole team.”
Cassian’s smile twists into a smirk, gaze flickering and darkening as he holds his hand out across the register counter. “It’s a bargain.”
Nesta already knows she’s going to regret this, but she reaches forward, sliding her hand into Cassian’s. His fingers curl around her own with ease, his grip surprisingly gentle. His hand is so large compared to her own, practically swallowing hers whole, and the callouses slide against her palm when she pulls her hand back. She has to forcibly shove down a shiver before it can skitter up her spine in reaction.
“Let’s go, then,” Nesta says, gathering up her things where she stored them beneath the register.
She and Emerie share one final look before Nesta leads Cassian out the door and back onto the street. Thankfully, it’s a short walk to one of the local restaurants that focuses on PNW cuisine, a good introduction for Cassian to the city and area.
“So, I have to ask,” Cassian begins once they’re seated at a small table near the back of the restaurant, the waitress vanishing with their drink order.
“Ask about what?” Nesta asks, not even bothering to look up from the menu even though she already knows what she’s going to order.
“About the bookstore.”
Nesta’s gaze flicks over the top of the menu in her hands, eyes narrowing. “Some people like to read, meathead.”
Cassian tips his head back and lets out a booming laugh, earning a few curious looks from the other tables. “Did you really just call me a meathead?”
“I’ve seen you play, seen you fighting other players on the ice.”
“Are you watching my games, sweetheart?” Cassian asks, leaning across the table to smirk at her, those hazel eyes of his glinting in amusement again.
Nesta rolls her eyes, leaning forward as well to sneer, “you wish. I told you, Gwyn is a Nashville fan. I occasionally watch a game with her.”
Cassian hums, and Nesta bristles at the way he continues to eye her. Something about those hazel eyes is almost unsettling, as though he’s looking through her in a way no one ever has. It takes everything within her not to shift in her seat, to simply turn her attention back to her menu.
“History.”
Nesta looks up again with a frown. “What?”
“History,” Cassian repeats, leaning back casually in his chair. “That’s what my degree is in.”
“I thought hockey players got drafted at eighteen? That’s what Gwyn has always said at least.”
“That’s true, but not everyone joins the NHL right out of the draft. I played for my college team for two years before I was finally called up.”
“And what? You magically finished your degree in two years?”
Cassian laughs again, this time a low chuckle that’s surprisingly warm, that practically wraps itself around Nesta’s limbs. “Lucky for me, there’s this really amazing thing called online classes.”
“Oh.”
Nesta doesn’t know what else to say to that, but thankfully, she’s spared when their waitress returns to their table, ready to take their food orders. When she steps away again, Nesta no longer has her menu to use as a distraction, has nowhere else to look except at the man sitting across the table from her. The low light of the restaurant cuts shadows across his cheeks and jaw, the candles on each table flickering in and deepening the hazel of his eyes. The large span of his hand is on full display as he curls his fingers easily around the bottle of wine he ordered, filling Nesta’s glass before he fills his own.
“You never answered my question,” Cassian tells her, setting the bottle back down. “About the bookstore.”
“I told you, some people enjoy reading. Myself included.”
“Yeah, but I remember Feyre talking about how you went to law school, that you’d be terrorizing courtrooms and making everyone regret going up against you. So, what happened? How do you go from lawyer to bookstore owner?”
The urge to lash out, to make a snapping reply that diverts the conversation, claws up Nesta’s throat. She rarely talks about it, about him. The reason she made the move to Seattle in the first place, leaving a gaping wound as big as the distance between them with her sisters. The reason the dream she thought she had, the dream she swore she always wanted, shattered between her fingers like glass, shards cutting deep and leaving her bloodied. The reason she retreated and fell back into the shadows, that Emerie and Gwyn had to pull her out.
There are days where it all still feels so raw, no matter how much time has passed. Days where a sickening feeling will churn through her gut as soon as she opens her eyes. Days where she can still hear his voice, still feel his hands. Days where the voice in her mind morphs into her own worst thoughts, into her mother’s clipped, cool tone.
“My life fell apart, and I decided to open a bookstore with my friends,” Nesta finally answers with a derisive drawl. “Happy?”
Cassian’s face falls, lips tugging down in a small frown. “What does that mean?”
Nesta doesn’t want his pity. It’s the one thing she hates most, people looking at her with pity in their eyes. As though they feel sorry for her, as though she’s weak. When she finally walked away, finally got out, she swore to herself that she would never be weak again, and she’ll be damned if she starts now.
“Last I checked, I don’t have to tell you my whole life story. I answered your question, did I not?”
“Nes–”
“You get one dinner as part of our bargain, remember? Do you really want to ruin it?”

Carter walked out of her apartment with Cooper walking next to her with her duffle bag and purse in her other hand she put her key into Quinn’s apartment walking in see Quinn sitting at the kitchen counter on his phone before looking up at the sound of the door.
Carter undid Coopers leash letting him run right to Quinn, who quickly pet him.
“You heading out?” Quinn questioned knowing Carter was heading down to Seattle for a two days, to spend some time with someone special to her.
“Yeah gonna leave now. Thank you for watching coop for me.” Carter walked over pulling her brother in a hug resting her head on his shoulder.
“Of course Cart.” Quinn smiled hugging her back, “Now go and go have fun with Connor yeah?” Quinn smiled seeing how exicted his little sister looked and the red on her cheeks.
Carter smiled nodding at her brother before kneeling down in front of her dog, Cooper. “I’ll be come for a bit okay buddy but Quinny is gonna watch you okay.” She pressed a kiss to the top of his golden curls before standing up and walking to the door waving at Quinn as she grabbed her bags and walked out the door.
She headed into the Elevator heading to the parking garage, she walked over to ther olive green mercades g wagon, she opened the back door throwing her duffle bag on the seat before hopping in the front seat throwing her purse on the passenger seat. She plugged her phone in clicking on her hours long Taylor Swift Playlist and put her phone on her phone stand before pulling out of the parking spot and out of the garage.
Carter drove down the street towards the drive thru coffee shop she love and waited in line before getting the chocolate crossing and an ice vanilla latte before she started the two hour car drive to Seattle.
Carter tapped her fingers to the beat of Taylor Swift blasting through her car, as she drove down the highway.
Before she knew it she had drove the two hours and was pulling into the hotel parking lot, she knew he would be most likely be back from his morning skate and he already told her what room he was in and Connor happened to be alone this weekend which was perfect for them.
She grabbed her purse slipping it on her shoulder before getting out the car opening the back grabbing her duffle bag and locking her car. Carter walked up to the hotel and through the lobby and headed to the elevators and clicking the floor level. Carter waited for elevator to go up and then walked through the doors and down the hallway towards Connor’s room. She knocked on the door four times waiting for it to open.
Carter heard Connor’s footsteps coming towards the door and him quickly opening the door, Connor smiled seeing his favorite girl, for the first time in a while.
“Hi Connie.” Carter smiled dropping her bag in the doorway and putting her arms around his neck and burying her head into the side of his neck, feeling his arms come around her waist pulling her close to him.
“Hi Roo.” Connor mumbled kissing the top of her head, breathing out a sigh of relief holding his best friend in his arms again.
They both reluctantly pulled away from each other after a few minutes, Connor grabbed her duffle bag she dropped on the floor before putting a hand on her back and guiding her into his hotel closing the door behind him.
Connor set her bag on the desk and grabbing her purse from her and setting it next to her bag before pulling her towards the bed and gently pushing her on the bed making Carter laugh. Connor layed down next to her burying his face into her side humming contently as her hand softly brushed through his hair.
It was silent in the hotel room as the two cuddled together, the silence was comfortable for both of them, peacefully for the two.
“I missed you.” Connor mumbled into Carter’s side his hand resting on her hip, his thumb gently brushing her hip bone softly.
“I missed you too.” Carter whispered back gently kissing the top of his head.
Truthfully the two have been so use to seeing each other so often for the a few years that Carter leaving to NHL was an an adjustment for both of them and now Connor is playing in the NHL they can see each other a little more.
Carter and Connor slowly relaxed more and more cuddled together and slowly fell asleep.
Two hours later and Connor slowly stirred from where he was cuddled into Carters side, he looked at his watch seeing it was alreadly 3:00 PM and they have been sleeping for a few hours.
Connor softly slid up the bed leaning onto the pillows and Carter in her sleep shuffled closer to Connor, their legs intertwined and her arm around his stomach and his arm around her. Connor softly brushed her hair behind her ear admiring the peaceful look Carter has when she sleeps. He gently kissed her forehead and continued to admire her softly.
Carter gently grumbled cuddling her head into his side, her eyes slowly opening. Connors hand gently play with the ends of her hair as she woke up.
“Hi.” Connor smiled down at his sleepy girl.
“Hi.” Carter mumbled back still waking up.
“You want to go get something to eat?” Connor softly questioned hoping she yes and he can ask the question he should have asked a while ago.
“Do i have to change.” Carter rested her chin on his chest looking at him, pouting slightly not wanting to get changed being comfy.
“Of course not.” Connor shook his head with fond smile, not even thinking she should change, adoring what she’s wearing now, just a pair of olive green sweatpants and his grey Lululemon crew neck she stole a few months ago.
“Then yes.” Carter smiled nodding.
“Good, then let’s go.” Connor gently got up as Carter got off of him, they both got off the bed and slipped on their shoes. Carter grabbed her phone slipping into her pocket, before following Connor out of the room and into the elevator.
“So where are we going?” Carter looked at Connor for an answer.
Connor smirked slighty, “It’s a surprise Roo.”
“Oh cmon.” Carter playfully groaned following Connor out of the elevator and towards the hotel doors, “Can i get a hint.”
“Nope.” Connor shook his head throwing an arm over her shoulder and starting the walk towards where they are going.
“No hint?” Carter pouted slighty looking at her best friend.
“Nope we are onto a few minutes away anyways.”
“Fine.” Carter playfully groaned, enjoying the slightly cold breeze and the warmth coming from Connor as they continued to walk to somewhere.
Connor led them to a small dinner he found online, he opened the door letting Carter in first and following her in. They got led by a waitress to a booth in the corner of the dinner, a dinner that’s pretty calm not many people.
Carter slid into the booth and Conor slid in next to her, use to always sitting to Carter that he rather sit next to her than across the table.
Connor opened the menu scanning it, “They have french toast.” He smiled when he heard the exicted gasp Carter let out.
“I won’t tell if you won’t.” Carter smiled holding her pinky towards Connor making him smile and link his pinky with her, something they have done for awhile especially when they have cheat meats and promsie not to two anyone.
They quickly talked about everything and anything wanting to catch up even though they facetime almost every night.
The food was given to them and they quickly ate their delicious french toast.
Connor quickly grabbed the check before Carter could reach it, “Hey! i was gonna pay.” Carter complained softy hitting him gently in the arm.
“No it’s my treat.” Connor smiled putting the money down and hopping out of the booth and extending a hand down to Carter. Carter grabbed his hand and got out of the booth. They walked out of the dinner seeing the sun started to set and sunset looking really beautiful. They walked back the way to the hotel when Connor stopped and quickly jogged across the street towards a floral stand, Carter looked confused as Connor quickly jogged away.
Connor quickly bought a bouquet of pink tulips, Carter’s favorite flowers. Carter smiled softly seeing Connor jog back across the street with flowers in his hands.
“For you Roo.” Connor smiled handing her the flowers.
“Thank you Connie.” Carter leaned up kissing him on the cheek close to his lips.
“Always.” Connor smiled with the blood rushing to his cheeks, they continued to their walk back into the hotel and through the elevator back into his room.
Connor put his hand on her back leading her through his room to the balcony he has, She set her flowers on the desk as she walked through the room before she leaned against the rail looking at the sunset.
Connor had grabbed a small box as they walked across the room and stood behind her resting his chin on her shoulder, “Close you eyes for me.” Carter gently closed her eyes feeling Connor gently gather her hair pulling the to one side of her neck, and she could feel a cold chain come around her neck and something hanging from the chain resting on her chest as Connor clipped the necklace.
“Open your eyes.” Connor gently spoke seemingly slightly nervous.
Carter looked down at the necklace seeing a small flat silver circle with a C engraved in it, She looked at it before looking back at him, “C for…”
“C for Connor.” Connor nervously answered seeing Carters eyes widen and flash with an emotion he couldn’t place, Carter turned around fully her back againt the railing and Connors arms around her resting on the railing, “I know we agreed not to talk about what happened our draft nights, and the times we kissed, i know we’ve both been to busy to talk about us, but Carter i love you.” Connor took a deep breath cupping her face, “I loved you since the moment i laid my eyes on you, i had no idea i was already falling for you since the day we meet. You’re my best friend and the person i want to spend the rest of my life, living out our dreams together. And i know your nervous about our friendship if something’s bad happens between us but i am more than willingly to take that risk, i want to be your boyfriend and i want you to be my girlfriend.” Connor softly spoke looking directly down at Carter.
Carter could feel her face soften as listens to Connor speak, she could see Connor was hopefully waiting for an answer, “Yes yes yes of course.” Carter rapidly nodded cupping Connor’s face and pulling it down to her pressing her lips to his softly putting all the emotions she didn’t say into the kiss.
They pulled back panting heavily as their foreheads leaned againt each other, “Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Carter nodded smiling knowing she couldn’t live in fear anymore, she wanted to be with Connor.
Connor smiled resting his head in her neck laying a gently kiss on her neck. Carter hand came to the back of his head gently holding his head in her palm.
The two stayed out on the balcony holding each other until the sun was completed gone and the weather was getting even colder, Connor could feel Carter getting cold and shivering slightly, he lifted his head off her neck, “Why don’t we go inside warm up and get changed and stay in bed the rest of the night?”
“Please.” Carter nodded following Connor back into the hotel, slipping off her shoes and setting her phone on the nightstand.
Connor gently tossed a pair of grey sweatpants and a black blackhawk’s long sleeve towards her, “Here.”
Carter caught the clothes, “You know i brought clothes right?”
“Yeah so.” Connor replied back with a smile knowing Carter loves wearing his clothes.
Carter just smiled walking to Connor kissing him softly on the lips before heading to the bathroom to get changed.
Connor shook his head with a lovesick smile before getting changed into a pair of black sweats and a blackhawk’s shirt.
He got under the covers clicking on the tv, when he heard the door click open and Carter come out with her hair in a long braid and in his clothes. Connor smiled admiring her in his clothes always loving her in his clothew.
“What?” Carter questioned looking over at Connor feeling his eyes on her.
“You look beautiful.” Connor truthfully anwsered looking at her with a soft smile.
“Shut up.” Carter mumbled her face heating up, she walked to the bed and slid under the covers, cuddling up to him.
“What i can’t compliment my girlfriend?” Connor smiled looking down at her, Carter hiding her blushing face in the crook of Connor’s neck.
“I like that.” Carter mumbled grabbing one of his hands intertwining it with her hand.
“What?” Connor brushed her hair behind her ear.
“You calling me your girlfriend.” Carter whispered hiding her smile against his neck.
“Yeah? I like it too.” Connor agreed with a smile kissing the top of her head.
December 14, 2023
Connor slowly woke up to the beeping of his alarm, he stretched his arm over shutting it off. He looked down at saw Carter still cuddled into a side, he smiled looking at one of his favorite versions of Carter, her sleeping.
Connor knew he had only had a few minutes before he need to get up so he gently played with ends of Carter’s hair just watching his now girlfriend.
Connor reluctantly started to get up, he slowly moved over letting Carter lean against the pillow and he quielty got out of the bed before leaning over making sure the covers were over her good and kissing her forehead. He headed to bathroom quickly getting ready, throwing on some work out clothes and grabbing his phone. He quickly wrote a note and left it by her phone knowing she would be up before he came back from the morning practice he had. Connor walked to the door and gently closed it behind him.
Carter slowly woke up the feeling of the spot next to her still warm but Connor not there anymore, she knew she probably just missed him leaving. She slowly sat up in the bed rubbing her face yawning, she checked the time and saw it just 8:00 and she knew she had a few hours until Connor would be back. Carter hopped out of bed grabbing a lululemon workout set and heading to the bathroom to change and brush her teeth.
Carter walked out of the bathroom throwing her hair up in her regular messy bun before grabbing her nike running shoes and slipping them on with a pair of socks, she grabbed her green air-pod maxes and walked across the room to grab her phone but picked up the piece of paper on top of her phone, she smiled seeing the sweet note from Connor. Carter grabbed her phone and headed out of the room towards the hotel gym.
Carter did her workout for an hour before wiping the sweat off her forehead and heading down to the breakfast the hotel had and quickly ate a big breakfast before she walked back to the room, she walked in grabbing her toiletries and headed to the bathroom taking a long shower.
Thirty minutes later she was done and checked the time seeing it was already 9:50. She slipped on one of the robes and did her skincare routine and decided to style her hair for once, Carter always would rather throw it into a braid or bun rather than doing her curly hair routine but knows Connor absolutely loves her curly hair.
Carter sat in the bathroom for at least forty minutes doing her hair before she grabbed a pair of Connor’s sweatpants and a hoodie slipping it on.
She sat down on the bed leaning against the headboard going on her phone, responding to all of Quinn’s text, snapping back to Luke, and doing her round of game pigeon with Jack.
She heard the door click and it open seeing Connor walk in looking freshly showered and she saw him smile once he saw her.
“Your hair.” Connor grinned quickly setting his stuff down and walking right to Carter, he curled one of his fingers around her curls before cupping her face gently and softly pressing his lips to her, feeling her smile into the kiss. Connor slowly leaned back kissing her cheek, “It looks beautiful Roo.”
Carter felt her cheeks go red, “Thanks Connie.”
Carter opened up her arms towards Connor making him smile and quickly slip off his shoes and get into bed resting his head on her chest and throwing his arm around her waist, Carter pressed a kiss to the top off his head before beginning to run her finger through his hair.
Carter feel Connor slowly began to relax and knew it wouldn’t be long before he fell asleep, knowing both of them love to take a pre game nap.
Connor breath slowly evened out and fell fast asleep, Carter picked up her phone going on it for the next hour as Connor took a nap.
Carter checked the time seeing it was already 12:00 and she slowly started rubbing Connor’s back to wake him up, “Con you got to get up.” She pressed a soft kiss to his forehead as his eyes slowly fluttered opened, “Hi.”
“Hi.” Connor mumbling with a sleepy smile. He slowly woke to the feeling of Carter’s fingers in his hair, he gently got off and Carter and got out of bed grabbing his suit and heading to the bathroom. He put on his all black suit and slipped on his socks, running a wet hand through his hair before heading out of the bathroom.
Carter looked up from the bed smiling at Connor before noticing him holding his tie in his hand, something he use to always ask her to do, she fondly rolled her eyes smiling, she stood up walking to Connor and grabbing the tie beginning to wrap it around his neck and started to tie.
“What?” Carter laughed slighty as she felt Connor’s eyes on her, just as she was tying his tie.
Connor hands were rested on her lower back admiring his girlfriend, “Nothing your just beautiful.” He grinned seeing the red bloom on her cheeks and the shy smile she tried to hide. Connor lifted her chin to see her face, “You are my love.” Connor smiled softly kissing Carter’s nose making it scrunched up.
“Stop it you dork.” Carter gently smacked his arm after finishing his tie, “I’ll see you soon yeah?” Carter smiled at him, Connor nodded leaning down and placing a gently peck to her lips before her forehead.
“Soon.” Connor agreed grabbing his phone and AirPods before heading out of the hotel.
Carter grabbed her makeup back sitting at the desk and deciding to start and take her time, about an hour later she was finally done as she may of been distracted by facetiming Quinn, telling him all about yesterday and Connor asking her to be his girlfriend. She finished her red lip stick before getting up and grabbing her outfit getting changed.
She zipped up her heeled boats before looking in the mirror looking at her outift, A long sleeve tight all black dress, black tights, a red trench coat, and black knee high heeled boots, she fixed her C necklace, spraying her perfume before grabbing her phone, wallet, lipstick and car keys. Carter headed out for the room and out of the hotel getting into to her car and driving to the Kraken stadium.
She parked in the parking garage for players and family members before heading through the lot. Carter scanned her ticket before getting into the stadium.
Carter having got tickets from Vince, who once found out she was planning on going to the game got everything set up for her. Carter took the elevator to the suite levels not surprised Vince got her a suite.
She walked to the one that had Dunn on the door and saw only one person in the suite, Daniella Vince’s girlfriend.
Daniella turned around at the door opening smiling at Carter, “Hi Carter.” She walked over pulling the younger girl into a gentle hug.
“Hi Dani.” Carter smiled gently hugging her back, having met her many times now because of Vince, “Is anyone else sitting here with us”Carter asked as they pulled apart.
“Nope just us, Vince made sure.” Daniella shook her head with a fond look, knowing Vince enjoys spoiling the ones he cares for and he would rather they be safe and more comfortable in a suite alone.
“Of course.” Carter fondly shook her head looking around the suite smiling when she noticed Vince had picked out some of their favorite foods. Carter looked up at the sound of cheers seeing the Blackhawks coming out for warming up and the Krakens behind them.
Carter sat on the barstool seat liking the view from that seat and the table in front of her. She looked around the ice looking for her boy, smiling when she found 98 who was already looking at her sending her a smile and a wave, Carter fondly chuckled and gently waved back.
Daniella smiled watching Carter and Connor and is honestly still surprised by how many people don’t realize the two are in love, it was obvious with the way they look at each other and the smiles they have in each others present.
Daniella gently nudged her shoulder to Carter, “So has anything more happened there?”
“He asked me to be his girlfriend yesterday.” Carter softly admitted to someone who’s felt like an older sister since they met.
Daniella gasped excitedly shaking Carter’s arm, “Tell me everything!”
And Carter did. Well until the game started and her focus was immediately stuck on the ice, having always loved to watch Connor play.
1-7 Blackhawk lost.
Carter winced slighty at the end of the game knowing Connor will be down a bit, but she still enjoyed being able to watch Connor play, even if she would of done anything to be on the ice playing with Connor.
Daniella linked arms with Carter leading her down towards where the locker rooms are, and they can wait for the boys to come out.
“Hello Carter!” Lukas Reichel called out, as Lukas and Kevin Korchinski were the first ones to walk out, and now they realized why Connor has been in such a good mood the last few days, Connor knew Carter was coming and He’s been spending time with Carter.
“Hello boys.” Carter smiled fist bumping the two when they got to her, having met a lot of Connor’s team when she visited him in Chicago during the summer.
“So your the reason why our boy’s been so happy the last few days.” Alex Vlasic smirked as he walked out of the locker room raising a teasing eyebrow at Carter.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Carter sassed back with an innocent smile.
“Oh i’m sure.” Alex smirked teasingly first bumping Carter standing next to Kevin.
Most of the Kraken and Blackhawk players walked out for the locker room by the time Connor came out, who saw his three of his teammates chatting with his girlfriend.
Connor walked over to them immediately ganning their attention as he stood behind Carter and just rested a hand slighty on her hip, both of them not liking PDA.
Carter relaxed slighty feeling his hand before gently hitting her foot to his foot and sending him a soft smile before turning back to the conversation with the three boys and Daniella.
Anthony Beauvillier and Nick Foligno walked out the locker room talking to each other, before noticing the younger players standing around talking and walked over wondering what they were doing before realizing who was standing with them, Carter.
“Now they wouldn’t be little huggy bear would it.” Anthony smirked as he walked right over to Carter.
Carter spun around at the sound of her old teammates voice smiling at him quickly pulling him into a hug, “B!” Anthony gently hugged her back having missed one of his favorite teammate.
“I didn’t know you were coming to the game?” Anthony asked as they pulled apart.
“Ahh this one begged me too.” Carter sent a teasing smile to Connor, who just fondly rolled his eyes not denying anything.
“Ah of course.” Anthony had a knowing look knowing Carter and Connor have been best friends for years, especially since they were teammates for so long, the two always reminding Anthony of him and Matt.
“Hi Nick.” Carter send a smile and nod towards one of the people that she knew has really helped Connor in Chicago, and Nick who made Connor bring Carter over for dinner when she was in town.
“Hey Carter.” Nick smiled at the girl who was easy to adore, especially his kids quickly grew to love Carter when they met her.
“Are you going with the bus?” Nick questioned Connor who seemed happy even after the brutal loss sticking right next to Carter, leading Nick to think that him and his wife may be right about the two.
“No, i told couch i had a ride.” Connor shook his head sending a soft look to Carter who was already looking at him.
Nick nodded and Anthony, Lukas, Kevin and Alex all said their good byes to Carter before continuing their walk to with the bus was waiting.
Vince was finally coming out of the locker room.
“Took you long enough.” Carter called out as Vince was finally walking over to them.
“It takes time to look this good, dear spitfire.” Vince sassed back with a smirk running a hand through his hair.
“I’m sure.” Carter deadpanned as Vince reached them before laughing as Vince yanked her into a hug, “Thank you V.”
“Course.” Vince murmured back knowing Connor is very important to Carter and was glad he could make things easier for her to see him, “Now get back to the hotel and spend some time with your boy.” Usually Vince would be using this time to spend some time with Carter, but he knew how much Carter has been missing Connor.
“I’ll see you soon.” Carter pulled back from the hug giving Vince a smile before hugging Daniella. Carter smiled once more at the couple before walking away with Connor.
A lot of the Arena was pretty quiet as most fans were gone already and most left were just employees.
Carter felt Connor slip his hand into hers, she looked over seeing Connor look at her with a soft smile before looking forward, Carter felt her cheeks her pink and smiled looking forward. They walked to the parking garage to her car, Connor opened the door for Carter to get in before walking around to the Passenger seat.
Carter slipped her phone out of her pocket handing it to Connor knowing he likes to choose from her music. He smiled at her lock screen seeing the photo of the two of them at the beach with them facing the ocean and the picture was from behind.
Connor looked up from her phone looking at Carter with a fond smile, “Did i tell you look beautiful today?”
Carter blushed looking at Connor with a shy smirk, “You did.”
Connor smiled softly, “Good because you do.” Carter smiled leaning over pressing a gently kiss to Connor’s cheek leaving behind red lip stick on his cheek.
Carter started driving them to the hotel as Connor put on their playlist and held onto one of Carter’s hand as she drove.
They pulled into the hotel parking lot, parking and shutting the car off, Connor got out of the car first walking around opening the driver door for Carter and taking her hand as they walked into the quiet hotel as it already late at night, before getting into the elevator and heading the their floor. Connor unlocked the hotel door before letting Carter walk in first.
She sat on the edge of bed going to unzip her boots when Connor grabbed her hand stopping her and kneeling in front of her. Connor gently unzipped her heeled boots, before standing up and holding a hand out for Carter to take. Carter grabbed Connor’s hand standing up, her arm wrapped around his neck, her fingers playing with the bottom of his hair.
Connor just smiled admiring his girlfriend, he gently brushed her hair behind her ear and cupping her cheek. His thumb gently brushed over the tiny scar that you could barely see on Carter’s cheek bone. He pressed a gently kiss to her scar remembering how he saw her get hit and all the blood on the ice. Connor pressed a kiss to her other cheek and then her nose, and her forehead and then gently connected his lips with hers.
Carter gently pulled away first and couldn’t help but chuckle as she look at the Connor.
Connor was just looking at her with a fond smile, “What?”
Carter giggled, “My lipstick is all over your mouth.” She went to go wipe it off but Connor gently grabbed her hand giving her a sad look not wanting it off yet. Carter smiled leaning up and pressing a kiss on every inch of Connor’s face enjoying seeing her red lip stick get all over his face.
“There.” Carter proudly smiled as she pulled back barely any lipstick even left on her lips.
Connor just chuckled fondly pressing a kiss to the top of her head before reluctantly pulling bald and walking over to his bags grabbing pajamas for both of them and wrapping an arm around her waist picking Carter up with one arm and carrying her to the bathroom as she laughed.
“What are you doing!” Carter giggled as she watched Connor carry her to the bathroom letting her stand and hand her pajamas.
“Change first.” Connor smiled before walking out of the bathroom closing the door behind him so he could change in the room.
Carter just smiled watching him walk out of the bathroom before listening and getting changed into his clothes.
Connor knocked on the door heading Carter say come in, he opened the door just looking at the girl who’s made his heart flutter since the second he saw her.
Connor pushed off the door waking in front Carter and putting his hands on her waist easily picking her up and setting her onto the bathroom counter.
“Really.” Carter fondly quipped to her boyfriend, Connor just smiled shrugging before grabbing her toiletry bag and grabbing her skin care out, setting it onto the counter. He grabbed the makeup remover wipes and took one out before turning bakc to Carter, who was curious watching him. Connor gently whipped the wipe across Carter’s face removing all the makeup. He grabbed her moisturizer gently rubbing it into her face, before grabbing her under eye serum and rubbed under her eyes. He grabbed the chapstick he knows she loves to go to sleep with it on and put it onto her lips.
Carter lovingly watch Connor do her nighttime skin care for her, before she put her hand on his bicep when he was done pulling him towards her, she pulled him to stand between her legs as she reached over grabbing another makeup remover wipe and began wiping away all of the red lip stick on Connor’s face, she set the wipe on the counter when she finished.
“Bed?” Connor asked her, getting a nod. He gently picked her up off the counter letting her stand up as they walked to the bed. He grabbed the covers pulling them back on her side letting her get in as he pulled out as phone walking around the bed, he set an alarm for early in the mourning knowing she had to leave pretty early to drive home as she was leaving for a roadie tomorrow afternoon.
Connor set his phone in the night stand before sliding into the bed wrapping an arm around Carter, who she closer, burying her head into his chest and inhaled.
She missed Connors scent. She missed him. She hates falling asleep in a cold bed alone so use to spending so many nights sleeping in the same bed as Connor. Carter knew she would be seeing Connor in a few days because they would finally be playing against each other in the NHL but she still couldn’t help but be sad knowing she’s still gonna miss him. She always missing him whenever they aren’t together.
Connor looked down sensing something off with Carter, “What’s wrong Roo.” He hummed gently putting his hand under her chin that was hiding in his chest and pushed it up making her look at him.
“I’m just gonna miss you.” Carter softly mumbled.
Connor felt his face soften even more, he pressed a long and soft kiss to her forehead, “I’m gonna miss you too baby.” Carter looked at him with sad eyes before burying her head back into his chest.
“I hate not seeing you everyday anymore.” Carter finally confessed how much she hated not seeing him everyday since she got drafted a year and a half ago, “I hate it Con. I just miss seeing my best friend everyday.”
Connor felt his lip form into a frown, understanding exactly how she felt, “I know, trust me i know. I hate it too.” He rested his face against the top of her hair breathing in her comforting scent.
Carter and Connor slowly fell asleep holding each other.
December 15, 2023
Connor eyes opened hearing his alarm he reached an arm over quickly shutting it off before it could wake Carter up. He looked at Carter who was still cuddle in his chest and her arm wrapped around his waist. Connor smiled kissing the top of her head before reaching for the hotel phone having checked what they have for room service so he could get Carter breakfast before she left to drive home. He quietly order the food through the phome before setting the phone down and resting his cheek against the top of Carter’s head enjoying the time he has been able to spend with her the last two days.
He slowly rubbed her back knowing it will slowly wake her up. Carter started moving more before her eyes seem to softly flutter open.
Connor lifted his head off of Carters leaning back against the pillow, He brushed her curl from her face smiling at her, as she looked up at him with sleepy eyes. “Hello Beautiful.”
“Hi.” Carter mumbled still half asleep as she looked up at Connor.
Carter slowly woke up as she rested her head on his chest staring up at him for a long while before a knock was at the door.
Connor slowly started to get up making Carter whine, “I’ll be back in just a second.” Connor promsie pressing a kiss on the top of her head. He walked over to the door taking the room service, thanking the employee before shutting the door begin him. He walked the tray over to the bed setting it on the bed before slipping back into bed next to Carter.
Carter looked at the tray filled with food and drinks, she slowly sat up sliding against the head board sitting next to Connor who grabbed the tray putting it on their laps.
Carter turned her head pressing a soft and long kiss to Connor’s cheek, “Thank you.”
“Of course.” Connor smiled back.
Carter smiled seeing the cup of coffee and seeing the creamer on the side, she quickly grabbed the creamer and pour some into the coffee before grabbing the coffee and holding it in her hands before taking a sip.
The two slowly began to eat the food on the tray together before Carter had to reluctantly get up to brush her teeth and pack up her bag. She headed the bathroom doing what she needs to in there before grabbing anything of her’s in the bathroom and taking it into the room and putting it into her duffel bag before grabbing her boots putting them into the bag, before she grabbed one of her Canuck’s hoodie she had washed and sprayed with her perfume before setting it on top of Connor suitcase for him. She grabbed her ugg slippers before zipping up her bag and setting her purse on to of the bag. Carter grabbed her flowers from Connor setting it with her bags before she slipped on her slippers and walking over grabbing her phone seeing Connor slip on his shoes and throw on a hoodie.
Carter quickly caught the hoodie Connor threw at her and gave him a look, “What it’s cold Roo, and you only have on a long sleeve.” Connor just smiled.
Carter put on the hoodie and Connor grabbed her duffle bag, purse and flowers before Carter could.
Connor opened the door letting Carter walk through first before they headed into the elevator and heading through the lobby out to the parking lot as they walked to her car. Carter grabbed her keys from her purse Connor had unlocking her car and starting it from her key so it warm up, She opened her back door letting Connor set her duffle bag there before shutting the door and opening her drivers setting her phone in the cup holder and Connor set her purse and flowers on the passengers seat.
Carter closed the drivers door and looked towards Connor with sad eyes, Connor quickly pulled her into a hug they both needed. They held each other tightly for at least five minutes.
They reluctantly pulled away from each other resting their foreheads together.
“I’ll see you in a few days baby.” Connor cupped her face pressing a soft kiss to her nose.
“I know.” Carter took a deep breath nudging her nose to his, “I love you Connie.” She smiled softly at her soulmate.
“I love you too Roo.” Connor gently pulled back from her squeezing her hand before letting go and watching Carter look at him once more before getting into her car and starting it.
Carter sent him one more smile before driving away, as Connor watched her leave.

How you had gone about meeting a vampire, you weren’t entirely certain. And how you had gone from simply meeting that vampire to dating him was even more beyond you. But one thing was for certain: you had fallen in love with him, irrevocably.
Maybe you should have been more wary about giving yourself over to him so freely but there was just something about Josh that had pulled you in and kept you there. You had later learned that was his gift as a vampire: he could manipulate moods. It was sort of an unconscious thing, not exactly something he could control. You felt certain it was just him though. That was just Josh. He could light up any room he walked into; of course people felt drawn to him.
He just so happened to drink blood to survive. A minor detail, really.
“You’re not nervous, are you?” he asked from the driver’s side of his sedan. His arm stretched over the center console, letting his fingers wind through yours.
“I’m not sure I could be nervous around you even if I had the good sense to be.”
Josh smiled that typical toothy grin, complete with rosy cheeks and bobbing curls, the one that had ignited your feelings for him in the first place.
“Remind me to coax some good sense into you one of these days,” he joked.
You had heard tales of Josh’s brothers over the months the two of you had been together but this would be your first introduction. Josh seemed equal parts excited and hesitant despite it being obvious they were a large part of his life, having spent centuries by his side. You had to meet them at some point. But you felt far less nervous, at least less so in the department that his worries occupied. You had your own attachment to death, primarily in the way of loss, and while Josh had spent centuries by his family's side, you hadn't been so lucky. Now, it was family that you craved, almost as much as you craved Josh.
“Do you think they’ll like me?” you asked as Josh sped down the winding road shrouded by dense trees and thick forest. That was where he called his home, somewhere in the mountains outside of Seattle where the rain was constant and the clouds did their best to cover the Kiszka family secret.
“I think they’ll love you.” He let his eyes drift from the road over to yours to give you a reassuring smile that he might have needed more than you did.
Like you said, you were no stranger to death. Although, usually when the people around you died, they stayed dead.
You almost couldn't believe your eyes when he finally pulled into the long, narrow driveway and parked just outside of the garage to the home. It was a structure made almost entirely out of glass, the large and likely expensive antique decor visible from the outside. It was no wonder they lived so deep into the woods: less people around to observe their not-so-normal lives through the thin glass walls.
Josh opened the passenger side door for you before you had time to register the sound of his own door clicking open and shut.
“God, your house is magnificent. You really shouldn’t have brought me; I may just move in.” You took his arm as you stood from the car, noting the movement by the front door. A pair of vampires stood just inside looking eager to meet you as they helped one another adjust their hair and collars.
“That can be arranged,” Josh whispered, his lips grazing the shell of your ear.
He led you toward the house, the door opening just steps before you reached it. Inside, you saw the pair you’d watched through the glass, a man and a woman who, to be completely honest, might have been two of the most beautiful people you'd ever laid eyes on.
"Y/n, meet my only non-related brother Daniel and his partner Adele."
"Oh, it's so good to meet you!” Adele greeted you boldly, throwing her arms around you for a quick, tight squeeze. “Always women coming and going but none ever staying."
She was gorgeous, to say the very least. And the man standing next to her paired well with her too, matching her in stature and beauty. They were both tall and lean with dark eyes and dark hair, hers cascading in long waves down her back, his coiled tightly up by his shoulders. And even though you knew how easily they could kill you, they each had twinkling eyes that when cast upon you made you feel like the only person in the room.
"God, you're beautiful," you blurted out. The words never even traveled to your brain until they exited your mouth and you heard them spoken aloud, met with a sea of laughter from the vampires surrounding you. "I'm so sorry," you stammered, "I don't usually say things like that out loud."
"It's fine," Adele said with a wink that had no small effect on you. "That'd be the gift."
"Irresistible," her partner clarified, squeezing her into his side and nipping at her earlobe.
You noticed it right away, just how forward they were. It was hard to ignore. But what was even less subtle wasn't the way his hands clung to her waist, but the way that he looked at her. It was like she was the only thing he saw.
"Just means I'm good at luring humans to their death," she added herself with a wiggle of her eyebrows.
"Not that we all don't do just fine," Josh quipped.
“You can call me Danny,” Adele's partner said, looking as though he were going to reach across the space between you to shake your hand. But instead, you found yourself swiftly pulled into another tight hug, feet lifting from the ground easily as he engulfed you.
Before you knew what was happening, he was placing you back down onto the ground, his nose lingering near your hair only for a fraction of a second.
“Fuck, you smell good,” he huffed, pulling back with a smile that only grew as he watched you practically dodge out of his grip and back into the safety of Josh's arms.
“Uh thanks,” you mumbled awkwardly.
They were shockingly without restraint although perhaps it was naive to have expected anything else. And despite the forces in your body screaming at you to recognize the danger you were in, his smile somehow warmed your suddenly cool barrier.
You cleared your throat. "Are you irresistible too?"
This time, he let out a hearty laugh, a sound that was easily one of the more beautiful that had graced your ears in the span of your life.
"No, that’s just my natural good looks,” Danny smiled down at you. “I can see the future."
"Really?" you asked, suddenly intrigued rather than startled.
“It’s subjective,” Josh chimed in. “He can only see the path you’re on while you’re on it.”
“We should stay on this path. I think you’ll enjoy it.” Danny gave you a wink before pulling Adele into his side who let a quiet, “Indeed,” fall from her lips.
It was hard to gauge exactly what they had meant by it, though their looks certainly were suggestion enough at what they might’ve been hinting at. Regardless, Josh seemed to think nothing of it. Their…antics must have been a common occurrence.
"Where's Jake?" he asked, already guiding you down the long entryway that ran into the heart of the house.
"He's…occupied," Danny answered.
"Jake lives in the guest house,” Josh explained, turning back to you. “It's easier for him.”
"What do you mean 'easier'?" Walking and talking at the same time, you took the house in, surprisingly brightly lit and not at all what you had been expecting for a bunch of vampires. Of course, they could walk around in the daylight, the only proof of their immortality being the glittering of their skin beneath the sun. But still, it seemed almost too full of life with the glass and the leafy greenery that surrounded you.
"He can feel people's emotions. Manipulate them too, like I can, but much more powerfully. My gifts aren’t really intentional but he can make people feel whatever he wants. The only downside is that when it comes to feeling everything around him, it can be quite strong, especially when you live with four other vampires who feel things much more intensely than humans.” Josh pushed forward as he spoke, making his way down the hallway that opened into a large kitchen filled to the brim with greenery that survived in the seemingly greenhouse-like room. “The distance helps him quiet his mind a little. Plus, he has women over every night and the volume tends to get…loud. It’s like a brothel in here sometimes."
It was in the kitchen that you met the second brother, having come bounding down an open staircase off one corner of the kitchen looking even more dreamy than the last pair of people you had met.
"Thought I smelled the human." His voice was smooth and even and he wore his hair longer than Josh or even Danny, looking something like a modern-day Jesus who had mastered the art of disheveled.
He was breathtaking, just like the others. Maybe even more-so, somehow.
"My dear, this is Sam."
Josh gestured to his brother standing before you, prompting you to reach your hand out to greet him, hopefully a much more civilized greeting than you’d gotten from Danny and Adele.
"It’s nice to meet you," you said with a weary smile, waiting for something outlandish and over the top. But Sam only glanced down at your hand, making no move to take it. Really looking uninterested entirely. It seemed almost worse than the greetings you’d gotten from the others.
"Better keep a close eye on her, Josh,” he said instead, addressing his brother. “She smells quite good."
Without another word, Sam passed you and left out a door behind you, leaving you with nothing to do but stare at his much kinder brother awaiting an explanation. Although, that explanation didn’t come from the direction you were expecting it.
"You can ignore him,” the disembodied voice said. “He's not always in the best of moods. Likes to make it everyone else's problem."
You turned toward where Sam had left to see the twin Josh had told you about, although he and Josh hardly shared much in the way of resemblance when you took in hair and dress. He seemed like Josh’s complete opposite and a little more akin to the vampires you had pictured back when you were still under the assumption they were nothing but fairytales. And though you felt an immediate pang of guilt stab your gut when the thought filled your head, you couldn’t help it. He was ethereal.
"I'm Jake, the cool one." He outstretched his hand and spoke in a somewhat gravelly voice, like it had been exerted somehow though you weren’t sure that could happen to vampires.
You said nothing as you took his hand, unable to form even a single coherent thought or sentence, quite shamefully. And to your horror, it seemed to bring a smile to his face as you stood there stupidly silent.
"Sorry, didn't mean to make you nervous,” he chuckled. “I can fix that if you'd like."
There was a hint of that same suggestion you’d seen in Danny’s eyes although Jake seemed far better with subtlety. But Josh quickly pushed his twin away, severing the contact of your skin against his far too abruptly for your liking.
"No using your gifts on her unless she asks," he reprimanded his brother.
"Well, sometimes it's involuntary," Jake quipped back, his eyes never leaving yours.
You seemed to remember yourself in the sudden silence and cleared your throat.
"I can regulate my own emotions but thank you." You answered his non-question with a polite smile, hopefully a convincing diffusion of the tension you had accidentally created.
"Oh, humans can rarely regulate their own emotions," Jake teased with a smug laugh.
"Oh, are vampires good at it?" you asked, tone laced with sarcasm knowing fully that vampires were notoriously bad at just that, according to Josh anyway.
It prompted a burst of laughter from the twin, finally dropping the look on his face that read like he maybe wanted to eat you. Or fuck you. It was hard to distinguish on a vampire.
Josh’s shoulders seemed to relax then, like he’d been waiting for some sign of Jake’s approval of you and that had been it. It eased you as well, knowing at least someone in the house approved of you.
"I was explaining to her why you live in the guest house."
"You wouldn't believe how annoying Sam and his emotions are,” Jake rolled his eyes. “Although I must say, your emotions are quite strong for a human."
"Is that bad?" you asked curiously.
You weren’t certain it came as a surprise. You knew your emotions were on the more volatile side, especially since the death of your parents less than a year prior. But Josh hadn’t quite seen that side of you yet; he was a natural stifle, keeping you calm without even meaning to.
"It's interesting," Jake answered rather cryptically. Maybe he didn’t know what it meant.
“It’s fine,” Josh assured you instead, rubbing his hands over your biceps. “Nothing to worry about.”
"Must be a very full house of vampires," you said instead in an effort to turn the focus from you and whatever might have been wrong with you.
"Well, Josh isn't the only one with a preference for humans," Jake corrected with a wink.
"Aren't you worried they'll tell people what you are?"
A smirk grew wide in his face, utterly mischievous and suggestive.
"I can be very persuasive."
"There's a serious lack of morality around here," Josh commented quietly, unaware of the embarrassment threatening color in your cheeks at Jake’s pointed remark.
"You must be hungry!" Danny all but yelled as he and Adele burst into the kitchen with brimming excitement, and then more sternly, "Jake, is she hungry?"
"No, not exactly," he answered with a smug look on his face and eyes that stood unwavering on your face.
"Shame, we're always looking for a reason to dirty the kitchen."
Somehow when he said it, it lost all innocuous meaning and took on something far more suggestive. You were beginning to notice a theme and that theme didn't go unnoticed by Josh either, waving his brothers away with a disgusted look on his face.
"Okay, okay, I'm showing her around before you all freak her out even more," he said as he led you to the staircase Sam had descended from with one final disapproving look for the people gathered in the kitchen.
No one looked exactly displeased with themselves, Danny and Adele turning proudly to one another while Jake opted to give you a wiggle of his fingers as you retreated.
“I’m not sure I was really prepared for…that,” you admitted as the two of you moved further into the house.
“It wasn’t too bad, was it?” Josh asked, leading you by hand to his bedroom down a long, wood panel-lined hall.
“May take some getting used to but no, not too bad.”
It would take a lot of getting used to, actually. They were all so very…forward.
“I would tell you they’re harmless but…it wouldn’t exactly be the truth.”
He opened the door to his bedroom, one wall made entirely of glass and overlooking the treeline while the others were obscured with music and art from all over the world. All over time, too, by the looks of it. In the middle sat a bed that appeared slightly out of place, a bit more modern than the rest of the furniture he had decorated with. It was like he had bought it just for you.
“What is it with Sam?” you asked quietly, fingering through a box of records sitting on a small plant stand that looked like he had yet to sort through.
Truthfully it wasn't his more forward family members that stuck out in your mind as you perused his belongings. It was Sam. He was so different from everyone else in the house, almost like he cast a long shadow over everyone. He was certainly the most mysterious, wearing only his misery on his sleeve. It made you wonder if he had always been that way.
Over your shoulder, you watched as Josh’s entire demeanor changed. He seemed to go stiffer, his lips forming into a tight line before he spoke.
“A story for another time, when he isn’t listening so closely.”
“Are they all listening?” you asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Most definitely,” his smile returned.
You must have made a face because Josh was suddenly pinning you to the mattress on the other side of the room from where you had been standing, his fangs baring themselves slightly and an excited look in his eyes.
“You want to give them a show?” he asked as a mischievous look similar to the one his twin wore seeped into his features.
"You haven't even finished the tour!" you squealed, his lips wasting no time attacking your skin.
"Well, getting to know the bedroom is a very important part of the tour!"
You squealed again against the tickle of his facial hair on your skin, giving in almost instantly to the assault and to his hands.
When you woke and took in the early morning light as it just barely broke across the dawn, Josh was the first thing your eyes landed on, serene and silent. Hardly even breathing though he often did so just to seem more human to you.
You slept hot and didn't mind the icy feeling of his skin pressed against yours in the night. In fact, most nights it was the only thing that soothed you to sleep anymore. When he was gone, your body certainly noticed as you laid awake in the dark, antique home your parents had left behind, the air conditioner cranked as low as it could handle to somehow lull you into a mock sense of calm that only Josh brought you.
But the nights he was there, he laid dutifully by your side despite the fact that he didn't need sleep. You'd asked him once how he passed the time but all he had said was something about a few hours not being a very long time when you lived for eternity. It didn't make you feel like the night was any less long. It always felt too long that you had to leave him for slumber. Sometimes you'd fight to stay awake just to spend more time with him. But sleep always won.
He watched you silently as you stretched the stiffness from your limbs and rubbed the remnants of dreams from your eyes, arm shooting over to the nightstand at his bedside to fumble around for your phone in search of the time.
You hadn't slept that long, a measly six hours. But even still, it felt too long to leave him.
“You shouldn’t have let me sleep so long. I could have kept you company.” It was a common argument he had grown used to hearing you mumble in your early morning haze. And he always answered it with a smile and a reason.
“Not to worry, my dear, I know humans need their sleep after sex.”
“I hope we weren’t too loud,” you groaned as his fingers swiped hair out of your eyes, leaving burning trails of memories from the night before.
He was cold to the touch and yet somehow his touch seemed always to scald you. You'd have his fingerprints burned into your skin before long.
Josh let out a laugh with his tongue pressed behind his teeth and his nose scrunched, far too cute at that early hour to be anything close to human.
He was between your legs before you could scold him for laughing at you, his body hovering just above yours like a prize that was yours for the taking if you could lift off the bed and catch him quickly enough.
"You could have been quiet as a mouse and they would have heard anyway," he whispered with his face mere inches from yours, "so no use stifling those beautiful sounds you make."
And just like that, you wanted him again. It was that easy. Maybe that was part of his gift too but more realistically, it was just him.
But your body had other plans, sabotaging your sudden hunger for him with its own. He heard your stomach rumbling before you even felt it and dipped to press a quick kiss to the tip of your nose, already looking far too pleased with himself.
“You sound hungry.” A soft bite to your jaw to punctuate his words send you further into your growing agony.
“Not as hungry as you must be. You haven’t left my side in days. Have you actually eaten anything?”
He pulled back with a toothy grin. “Don’t worry about me. Let’s get you some breakfast, although I think Danny and Adele have already beaten me to it.”
This time it was a kiss pressed to your lips that threatened to keep you in bed, if it weren't for his hands pulling you up out of bed while his lips lingered on yours despite your groan in protest. With only a satisfied giggle, he pushed you out the door in the pajamas he had forced you into the night before and down the steps toward what sounded like a bustling kitchen.
The smell of food cooking finally hit you like a wall at the bottom of the steps. It was there that you took in the sights laid before you: a mess of a kitchen, Adele parked at the large stove top with spatula in hand and large flour-y handprints on the back of her tight jeans, Danny mixing something in a bowl behind her with flour on his cheeks and hands, and a hungover-looking Jake sitting at the kitchen island donning opaque sunglasses and swishing a glass of what looked like dark liquor in his hand.
“Oh good, you’re awake!" Adele exclaimed in a voice that prompted every head to turn toward you. "Food's almost ready!"
Their years without experience in the culinary arts were evident in the portions they had chosen to make, the island littered with various breakfast dishes that no one in their right mind could consume all in one morning.
"I tried to cook but they insisted,” Jake explained plainly, sounding only mildly annoyed as he sipped and observed cooly from behind his sunglasses.
“He’s just upset because we got here before him and kicked him out of the kitchen.” Danny smiled as he finished mixing more batter and passed the bowl to Adele to begin spreading on the hot pan before her.
“He cooks for his humans all the time," Adele explained. "It was our turn.”
God, they were so chipper in the morning, a product of never needing sleep, although Jake somehow looked like he needed some. Maybe he could feel your own fatigue.
"You really don't have to cook for me," you answered, moving to lean against the island as Josh wrapped his arms around your waist to remain close.
Adele flashed another dazzling smile your direction. "Oh nonsense, of course we do."
"Especially after feeling how much energy you expended last night," Jake added without even a glance your direction to see the embarrassment spread like wildfire across your face as he sipped his bourbon like a morning coffee. No doubt he could feel it without needing to look. But you could have sworn that his words were fueled by what sounded like a tinge of jealousy.
"At least somebody in this house got some last night," Josh defended you with a jab at his brother, hugging you tighter to his chest to show that he was in no way embarrassed by your activities the previous night.
"We were trying to be polite-" Danny began to explain while Jake spoke over top of him, "Didn’t want to scare our little human just yet."
Adele's eyes flickered briefly over to the door just off the kitchen that opened out onto the large patio overlooking the backyard. Her smile waned only a sliver before her eyes dropped back to the pan in her hand and as you glanced back to the door, you saw what she must have heard before you: Sam with an annoyed look on his face after presumably being out all night.
The room went oddly quiet when he entered until Danny broke the silence.
"Sam, would you like to help us?"
"I'd rather suffocate," he said simply, his eyes immediately finding yours in the suddenly crowded room.
He was wearing a fitted purple shirt that complimented his complexion well and pants that looked a little more wrinkly than your mother would have ever let you out of the house in. And at his neckline was the only evidence of what he'd been out doing: a small trickle of blood dripping lazily down like it had all the time in the world and no place to be.
"You've got a little-" Jake pointed with his index finger to his collar.
"Fuck,” Sam huffed in exasperation, straining his neck to get a look without stretching the material too far, “I just bought this."
“Such a messy eater,” Jake teased with a smile. “We’re gonna have to buy you a bib.”
He was met with an almost instantaneous glare, a face that could have put the fear of God in anyone it was directed at. But you lacked good sense, and all.
"I can get it clean," you chimed in quietly, almost absentmindedly, a small squeak of a noise that seemed to silence everyone around you more thoroughly than Sam’s looming presence. "I'm not really a stranger to blood stains,” you clarified as eyes turned to you. “Um…do you have a laundry room?"
Sam eyed you carefully, letting his gaze flicker quickly to Josh’s and prompting your own to follow, as if asking for permission despite having already offered. But Josh seemed beyond amused by it all.
"Yeah, he'll show you," he smiled, an indirect order to his brother who had landed his eyes back on your face and for some reason looked furious at the mere suggestion you had made. Nevertheless, he jerked his head in a different direction, signaling you to follow him.
"Don't be too long! Food will be ready soon!" Adele called as Josh released you from his grip to follow Sam down an unexplored hallway to a small laundry room just at the end behind a large set of heavy wooden doors.
It was a rather human-like setup although you weren’t sure what exactly you had been expecting. It made sense that even vampires weren’t immune to the mundane chores that plagued humans. Still, you couldn’t picture the vampire that stood before you, pulling his shirt off to reveal a toned chest that somehow made him look even more god-like, doing his own laundry.
Maybe he made Josh do it.
"You could try controlling your thoughts." His disapproval cut through the silence like a knife.
“I’m so sor-” you began to apologize, fumbling over your words as you averted your gaze in favor of the shirt he had just removed when it dawned on you. "You read minds?" you asked curiously, braving his eyes again.
"Yeah, and yours is quite loud," he said flatly, meeting your gaze almost as if he were daring you to look away.
You did.
"Sorry. I'll try and…think quietly." You cleared your throat and tried not to think anything too embarrassing as you turned your focus to the task at hand. You grabbed a box of baking soda from a shelf above you and let warm water soak into the blood at the small sink in the corner of the room.
"Were you out…" ‘hunting’ you thought, though you didn’t finish that thought out loud.
"Yes."
If you hadn’t seen the resemblance, his succinctness in comparison to Josh’s talkativeness might have been enough to convince you there was no relation between the two boys. He was far less warm, too. That might have been another indication. How they belonged to the same bloodline was beyond you.
“Josh says you and Jake are the only ones not on the bunny diet,” you continued, now trying to distract him from your derailing thoughts which, if his face was any indication, he was displeased by. Not that you had yet seen him looking anything other than displeased. That he wore well.
“It makes you weaker. I figure I’m already going to hell, might as well sin as much as I want.”
He leaned against the dryer, folding his arms across his chest as his eyes dipped to your hands to watch them work.
“Do you kill them?” You weren’t even sure where the question had come from or why your brain had decided it was appropriate small talk with the vampire across from you. Maybe it was morbid curiosity, but more likely some sort of gauge to see how likely he was to snap and kill you right there.
“Do I seem like I have an aversion to killing?”
God, he was intimidating. He was what you had expected when faced with the idea of meeting an entire house of Josh’s vampire kin. Your body screamed at you to be afraid of him. But somehow, by that same lack of sense that probably worried Josh, you were instead only painfully aware of the fact that you were not growing on him by any sense of the phrase.
“I don’t really know…” you answered quietly, and your matter-of-fact tone incited him to roll his eyes.
“Yes, I kill people,” he answered for you, annoyed yet again. “That’s what we were designed for so try not to let it surprise you.”
You nodded and dropped your eyes back down to his shirt again, fully accepting the awkward tension as it washed over you and pursing your lips like it was obvious he killed people. How stupid of you to ask, really.
“Helps if you let it soak in warm water but if you’re in a pinch, scrubbing works too,” you explained, both of you suddenly pretending like he was watching or cared.
He said nothing as you massaged the baking soda into the material gently, the way you had done with countless pairs of cotton underwear in the middle of the night. You imagined what it would be like to wash blood out of your own clothing under these same circumstances, someone else’s blood. Your meal, in fact. It made you wonder if that was in your future, if Josh would turn you.
Josh was strict about the blood he drank, specifically about it not coming from humans. He had explained that animal blood wasn’t nearly as satiating for his kind but that it felt right to him. He had only drank human blood once and quickly found it wasn’t for him. It felt funny to hear a vampire say it but truthfully, you couldn’t picture him hurting someone either, so in some odd sense, it fit. His brothers clearly didn’t have such reservations. You wondered if you’d be the same way, given the opportunity.
"What about Adele and Danny? Do they hunt the way you do?"
It seemed innocuous enough but your question was the final straw for Sam who had been growing more agitated by the moment.
"Are you almost finished? I don't have all day," he spat.
But you couldn’t ignore the irony.
"What an interesting thing for a vampire to say."
You didn’t even laugh at your own joke and that was probably for the best because if looks could kill, Sam was sending you a glare that would have swiftly ended your life.
"Humans are a liability,” he fumed, looking like he was using all of his strength to avoid doing something he would regret, no matter how little he would regret it. “Josh never should have brought you here.”
He stormed out without another word and without his shirt too, leaving you where you stood, sudsy hands and sigh caught in your throat. You felt like an idiot for your failed attempt at making conversation with him. But even more so, you worried that maybe you didn’t mesh well with Josh’s family. You wanted them to like you, desperately so. You had no family of your own anymore and it felt like this was your chance to have it again. To have something again. Every failed attempt with him would feel like another nail in the coffin on your fate that you didn’t want to be as lonely as it threatened.
You finished what you were doing quickly, it was dangerous for you to be alone after all, and returned to the kitchen where a now angry Jake argued passionately with Adele about human recipes and baking times. Danny contributed nothing to help solve the argument other than giggling along and adding in a, “She’s always right, Jake,” at the more inopportune moments, for no other reason than to get a rise out of him apparently.
It was comforting, actually, the bickering. Reminded you of the early mornings with your parents watching them play fight while making waffles for breakfast.
"Don’t let him get to you,"Josh whispered against the shell of your ear when you returned, having heard the entire conversation. They probably all had, actually, but you were trying to save yourself that embarrassment by pretending they hadn’t. Something else that would take some getting used to: the super hearing they all possessed.
"Food is ready!" Adele exclaimed.
She was good at cutting the tension but you certainly hadn’t missed the look she had given Sam when he entered. There was a story there, you could tell. Maybe it was part of the reason Sam seemed so angry.
She handed you a plate stacked high with the pancakes she had been flipping at the stove, Danny pouring a healthy amount of syrup on top as the plate exchanged hands. They seemed unbelievably proud of their work and watched you expectantly as you picked a fork up off the island and took a bite.
It wasn’t exactly a gourmet dish but it was edible, enough to smile and feign enjoyment for the eagerly-awaiting vampires surrounding you. And it seemed to appease.
"Ha! I knew we were better cooks than you!" Adele pointed with her spatula accusingly toward Jake who pushed it out of his face with a wave of his hand.
"Yeah, yeah, why don't you go celebrate."
"Ooh, celebration,” Danny said, suddenly intrigued. “I like the sound of that."
In an instant, his hands were on Adele’s hips, pulling her into a searing kiss that took them out of the kitchen quite quickly, aprons and various other clothing items littering the floor and marking their path down the hallway toward their room. It left you practically speechless.
"Vampires," Jake shook his head and gave you a wink as he began clearing dishes off the kitchen counter.
They didn’t even seem phased by it, leading you to believe that was a common occurrence around here. And rather than addressing it, Josh simply took the plate from your hands and grabbed one of yours now empty to lead you into the dining room just off the kitchen.
“Ruined my perfectly clean kitchen,” you heard Jake mumble as you retreated and chose a seat at the large oak table sitting squarely in the dining room made entirely of glass to give a breathtaking view of the surrounding forest.
"What?" Josh asked with a laugh as he took the seat opposite yours.
"Danny and Adele. They must really love each other." You gave a baffled shake of your head as you committed to choking down Adele’s cooking.
"Well, they are soul ties."
Soul ties: it wasn't something you'd heard Josh talk about before, a missing piece of vampire lore in your catalog.
"What does that mean?"
"Soul ties are like soulmates for vampires," he explained. "Vampires mate for life so when we form a tie with someone, we’re bound to them for eternity. There's some ceremony to it, binding the tie by drinking one another's blood. It's a very sacred thing. The act of drinking for a vampire, it's incredibly profound. But the act of drinking from the person you're tied to, it's the deepest form of intimacy."
You pushed the food around your plate with your fork. "Can vampires only form soul ties with other vampires?"
Josh gave you a knowing smile.
"No, Adele was human when Danny tied with her. It's much stronger when you're a vampire though. For a human, you can resist it longer, the forces pulling you together. As a vampire, it's much harder."
"What do you mean? What forces?"
"Sometimes a tie forms between two people who aren't together. You won't necessarily be instantly drawn to one another but over time, the ability to resist the other person becomes harder and harder. And as a vampire, you’ll grow weaker and weaker until the binding ceremony is performed. You grow to need each other.” He said it with reverence, like he felt its weight. “That's what happened with Adele."
"Her and Danny weren't always together?" You had a hard time imagining the two people you'd just witnessed with their hands all over one another like no one was watching dating other people. And sure, they seemed to be flirty with everyone, yourself included, but there was just no way they hadn't always felt that passion for one another.
"Actually…they weren't." Josh hesitated for a moment before continuing. "Adele was with Sam when her tie with Danny formed."
Suddenly her look and his demeanor made sense. "Her and Sam dated?"
Josh nodded and kept his voice quiet as he continued. "We didn't meet her for a long time after they started dating, probably because he was waiting to form the tie himself. But then, she walked through the door, Danny laid eyes on her, and it became clear why Sam hadn't felt it yet. She tried to resist it for a bit but once Danny turned her, it was too strong to deny."
It dawned on you what Sam's gift was, although it seemed more like a curse when you thought about it now. It was no wonder he seemed like a walking black cloud around the house. He had to listen to their thoughts about how much they loved each other all day, constantly seeing them and hearing them together. It was enough to make anyone miserable.
And you suddenly felt angry for him.
"Why do they flaunt it like that in front of him? Don't they care that he lives here too?"
Josh gave a sympathetic look and shook his head. "It's not really like that. When you're with your tie, and especially after you've done the ritual, nothing else really matters."
You felt the swift sharp sting of worry that he hadn't mentioned soul ties before. And if he hadn't mentioned it before, he likely hadn't felt it before.
"And…have you…" You didn't even want to say it, to speak it into existence and receive confirmation of what you were now terrified of: that Josh wasn't yours to keep. But when you met Josh's eyes as you trailed off into silence, you saw only a gentle smile on his lips.
"No, I haven't felt it yet. But soul ties are situational. You have to be on the right path to form them. And once those paths are right, they can't be unmerged."
"Why would it change?"
"It's just like humans finding their soulmates. You have to be in the right place at the right time, at a point in your life where you're ready to accept that person. It's the same thing, only throw in a bit of the supernatural and it'll do most of the deciding for you."
He gave you a genuine smile, clearly trying to ease your nerves before you had a complete spiral. And truthfully, it didn't put your mind at ease all that much. You liked what you had and at the very least, something had to change to put you on the right path to solidify what you already knew you wanted.
"So…I'm not your soul tie now, but I could be?" you asked, less a question and more clarification to be filed away for your own purposes.
"Yes, it could happen. But it’s not something I want you to worry about. It'll happen when it's meant to happen." He leaned across the table to give you a gentle kiss and another reassuring smile that seemed to do the trick. For now, at least. “Eat. I want to show you something.”
You turned your eyes back down to the plate before you. Maybe, at the very least, Sam could find some satisfaction in the distasteful thoughts you were having about Adele's cooking abilities.
When you managed to finish your breakfast, Josh escorted you out into the backyard that was more of an oasis opening into the dense forest surrounding their home than a typical yard. There was the guest house which looked like a small English cottage sitting several yards away from the house and decorated in ivy, tucked neatly into the treeline like it had always been there. And then there was a large greenhouse made entirely of glass, matching the main house that way, surrounded by plants and filled with even more. That was the structure Josh was leading you toward, holding open the door clouded by years of dirt and plants and exposure to the elements.
Inside sat almost every plant native to the northwest coast, all in various states of their life cycles which begged the question of who was taking care of them, who had written the tiny signs that named them all and picked each of the unique planters, some in deep jewel tones blanketing the ceramic, others looking hand-glazed in speckled pots with carved designs. Even the stained glass signs that hung from thick metal wire looked handmade, decorating the inside of the otherwise plain glass of the structure. And stringed lights ran like a blanket across the domed ceiling, looking dusty as though they had remained unlit for quite some time.
“This place is beautiful, Josh,” you marveled at your surroundings, enchanting even in the daytime with the early morning sun glinting off the glass. It set your boyfriend’s skin asparkle, little beams of light dancing across his skin and darting around to ricochet off the walls.
Even in such a mesmerizing place, he stole the show.
“It was Sam's but he doesn't take much interest anymore. The rest of us take turns watering everything now. Sometimes Jake comes out here and reads books to the plants.”
You could picture them all chipping in to keep the greenery alive, each contributing something unique to help the little leaves grow and thrive. Even the plants had a family. It almost made you yearn for their life, digging their roots into soil and sitting, unwavering, watching the world pass them by as Josh and his brothers sat stagnant with them. Living at an entirely different pace than the rest of the world. You’d dig your roots in, too, if you could.
“I can’t stand the thought of you going back to that big house by yourself,” Josh interrupted your rather self-pitying thoughts, diverting your attention to where your roots had once been placed. And so forcefully torn up out of the ground.
“Josh, you’ve been over almost every night for the past two months.” You avoided the obvious to keep from getting more emotional than you wanted to be at that moment.
Your parents had left their house to you, along with everything they had, but Josh knew you had felt stagnant in a different way since their death. You’d quit your job to move back to the place you grew up and take care of their affairs. And mourn. But somewhere along the way, grief had turned to anger, sharp and hot and near constant. It wasn’t until you had met Josh that your demeanor had been thawed…
“I know how much you hate going back in there. I should have brought you over sooner but I wanted to be sure all of this wouldn’t freak you out.”
“There are some things about your brothers that freak me out a little,” you nodded, making your way back to where Josh stood, “but there’s nothing about you that freaks me out.”
He gave you a soft smile as your arms wound around his waist. “You’ll have plenty of time to get used to it when you move in.”
“Oh is that so?” you smiled back at him. “And when did you decide I was moving in?”
“The day I met you, really, but that seemed a bit forward.”
Your smile fell as you realized he wasn’t just being cute for the sake of being cute.
“Wait, you’re being serious,” you breathed.
“Of course I’m being serious,” he grinned, pulling you in at the waist like he was suddenly worried you might run.
“You’re asking me to move in with you?”
He chuckled almost nervously and must have second guessed himself at your reaction because his shoulders squeezed upward in a shrug and he gave you a cautious nod before adding, almost silently, “If you’ll have me.”
It wasn’t that you had meant to worry him with your surprise. But you were surprised. It had been so long since…well, since things had gone well for you. You could feel your mind and body slipping into flight mode, the urge to run before the other shoe dropped sudden and severe. But you did want to move in with him. More than anything, you just wanted to be with him, always. He was your happy place and you certainly didn’t deserve him, but better than running was clinging. And you’d cling to him.
Without any words, you crashed your lips against his, solidifying your answer and earning a sigh of relief from Josh as his lips melded into yours. You could feel the smile that grew there, too, sealing itself into the kiss as his body was suddenly pressing you back into a heavy table in the middle of the greenhouse.
God, you were starting to feel like Danny and Adele, never getting enough of each other.
Josh broke from the kiss briefly, letting his lips fall to your jaw so he could speak better. “We’ll get your stuff tomorrow.”
“Uh-huh.” You weren’t paying attention any longer. The only object of your focus was now his lips. And his body. And his hands.
His lips worked lower as he easily lifted you up onto the table, parting your knees to make space for himself in between. You could imagine a life like this, easily. It made sense to you, as much as it scared you to once again have something so valuable. At least this would hopefully be harder to lose.
Your hands worked up into his hair to pull his lips back to yours, the taught curls wrapping around your fingers and engulfing them like even his hair meant to keep you there. And the hum suddenly buzzing through his lips, it vibrated through you. Fuck, you felt insatiable when it came to him.
His pace quickened as the kiss became more fervent, hungrier. He was always so in control but moments like these where your body was calling to him and moans were building in your chest, you swore you felt that control falter a bit. Secretly, you wanted to see him snap, but you knew the consequences of that were likely a bit more grave than just him being rougher for a night. But still, you wanted it. You couldn’t help but try, even, to push him just a tad further, when your hands lowered to the bulge growing in his khakis and your thighs hugged his hips harder. It was all for him, you were all for him-
“Am I interrupting?”
Jake’s voice startled you both, although you moreso, almost jumping out of your skin. You pulled back to quickly adjust your clothing, trying to save a bit of your dignity in the process. Josh, on the other hand, pulled away rather reluctantly, his fist clenching almost too hard around your thigh before he adjusted his pants and turned toward his brother with a singular word spoken more like a hiss.
“Obviously.”
“You’re parked behind me,” Jake said flatly, gesturing behind him to the garage and only glancing at you for a mere fraction of a second.
“You know where my keys are,” Josh answered, keeping his body in front of yours as you fixed your hair and tried to calm the sudden pounding of your heart in your chest.
“The last time I drove your car, it ended with you ripping the steering wheel out and throwing it at me.”
“You got blood all over the interior.”
“I said I’d have it detailed,” Jake defended himself in a tone that suggested he still didn’t see the problem with what he had done. “Anyway, she already said yes, so you have plenty of time for this,” he gestured vaguely in your direction with only his pointer finger, “later.”
You got a rare glimpse of watching Josh teeter on angry, well past visibly annoyed. To be honest, it turned you on and you prayed Jake couldn’t feel it.
Josh sighed, defeated, and turned back to you.
“I’ll be right back,” he promised with a smile unblemished by his previous anger. Never directed at you.
He was gone in an instant, leaving nothing but wind pushing your hair away from your face and leaving you still sitting on the table, now across from his twin who gave you a smirk the moment Josh was out of earshot.
“Oh don’t be embarrassed,” he relented, confirming your fears, “I’ve felt everything there is to feel.”
“It’s not nice to spy on people,” you retorted, crossing your arms over your chest to somehow try and hide yourself from him, fully clothed as you were.
He crossed to you, letting his hand absentmindedly adjust the hem of your shirt and almost causing you to jump at the contact as you watched him, still somewhat surprised by the audacity vampires seemed to have.
“It’s not really spying when you’re doing it in a building made of windows,” he said with a purse of his lips as he let his eyes trail over you, taking you in.
Your eyes darted over to his fingers, still resting at the collar of your shirt, and back to his face.
“Do you always give him a hard time like that?”
“Whenever possible,” he grinned wide. “You know, it was sweet of you, pretending like you liked Adele’s and Danny’s cooking this morning.”
You shrugged, oddly feeling at ease the longer he remained close. Maybe he was using his gifts on you.
“Oh, it really wasn’t that bad,” you lied.
He shook his head and tutted his tongue.
“I watched them make it, I know it was.”
“Well, it’s the thought that counts, right?”
He brought his eyes up to yours and for the first time, you took him in up close, his resemblance to Josh, all of the scars that differentiated him, the warmth in his eyes that mimicked his brother’s but somehow promised a little more danger.
“I don’t know; maybe we should ask Sam. That’s his specialty, not mine.” He smiled softly, moving his hand from your shirt to your hair to tuck strands that had been previously disheveled behind your ear.
It took all your strength to focus on the conversation.
“Thanks for not ratting me out to Danny and Adele,” you answered quietly, hoping to quiet your louder emotions.
His smile grew across his face and he leaned in slightly closer to speak barely above a whisper.
“Your little human secrets will always be safe with me.”
You ignored the beat your heart skipped as he said it in favor of chuckling lightly and giving him an exasperated smile yourself.
“A bit condescending, don’t you think?”
He dropped his hand, letting it ghost over your thigh as it fell back to his side.
“Maybe,” he nodded, dipping his eyes to your knees and letting them rake back up your body, “but I felt your heart flutter so, not exactly incentive for me to stop, now is it?”
And then he was back in the doorway of the greenhouse watching Josh cross the almost overgrown lawn.
“Thank you, Joshy,” he called without another look back your way. “Oh and you might want to pick a different place to do it. I don’t want to have to explain to these poor plants what they’ll have seen. It’ll be bad for their development.”
Josh only rolled his eyes and shook his head, returning to your arms where he belonged.
“Where were we?” he smiled.

This is so disappointing. I want to see more of this intriguingly colorful home. Built in 1941 in Seattle, Washington, it only has 2bds and 2.5ba, but the 4 car garage extends way out the back, so if you don't need that big of a garage, there's potential for more bedrooms. It's $650K, but it's Seattle, so.
Tumblr media
I like the fireplace setup and the large windows and sliding doors in the living room.
Tumblr media
Not sure I like the colors they chose for the cabinets, but they can always be repainted. They even painted the floor in colorful stripes.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom is huge and has a closet, a built-in dresser, plus a long vanity unit with lots of drawers.
Tumblr media
Bd. #2 also has great built-ins plus a terrace. There's some dripping water damage on the pink wall, though.
Tumblr media
Love this huge sun room with a balcony overlooking a garden room. There's also terrace access. And, that's all they show of the interior.
Tumblr media
Maybe they have a business in one part of the garage. Looks like a shop.
Tumblr media
The front of the house is raised. It does need some work, I see some rust and rotting wood.
Tumblr media
The lot is only a .05 acre, so you can't tell how far it extends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely needs some landscaping.
Tumblr media
It's interesting. The exterior definitely needs paint or siding or something.

Joel actually felt pretty damn smart when he got to his house. He stopped at the trash bin that sat outside the garage and dropped his now empty coffee cup into it, just in case Sarah asked why he’d gone to the place with the name stamped on the side of the cup.
He didn’t have a good fucking reason to be at a coffee shop by your apartment besides being at your apartment. And he knew he wasn’t ready to tell his daughter about the fact that you two were… whatever the fuck you were.
What were you doing with him? What did you want with him? Why was it so hard to know and why was he so fucking afraid to ask?
Didn’t matter now. The morning Sarah showed up to surprise him with a visit was not the morning to be having this discussion.
“Baby Girl?” Joel called as he closed the door behind him, dropping his keys on the table in his entry way.
“Dad!” Sarah flew around the corner and launched herself at him, just like she’d done when she was a kid. He caught her, the air knocked out of him, laughing as he caught his breath. “I missed you, old man!”
“Missed you too, Baby Girl,” he said, setting her down and stretching out his back. “But you’re gonna have to cut me a break, think my back is gettin’ too old to be catchin’ you like that.”
“How am I supposed to properly shower you in affection if I can’t just throw my whole body at you?” She smirked. “But fine, I guess if it’s for the sake of your health…”
He rolled his eyes and tugged her against his side, kissing her temple.
“Just gotta have you move back closer to home,” he gave her a squeeze. “Wouldn’t need to tackle me if I just saw you more.”
“Yeah, I’m working on that,” she smiled. “Trying to get promoted from junior copywriter to intermediate so I can come to the Austin office sooner rather than later…”
“That’s amazing Baby Girl!” Joel gave her another squeeze before leading her to the living room and settling on the couch. “I’m sure you’re close, they know how good you are.”
“Speaking of my grand plan,” she said. “I see you’ve been hanging out with my work wife.”
Joel coughed to try to hide his surprise.
“What?” He asked after a moment.
“Well I know you didn’t do the Seattle Zombie 5K last Halloween,” she nodded at his shirt. Joel felt his stomach drop. “But I know we did.”
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
“Not doing a walk of shame are you?” She asked, her eyebrows raised.
“You ever known me to be the walk of shame type?” He asked, scrambling for a reason that he’d have your shirt. “I just fixed her garbage disposal for her a few weeks ago, got soaked. She was nice enough to give me a clean shirt so I wasn’t drippin’ wet on the drive home. Didn’t realize it’d made it into my dresser is all. I’ll have to wash it again, give it back…”
“But you are hanging out with her then?” She asked. “I mean, you said give it back like you were going to see her again so…”
“We went out once since I helped with the sink and shit,” he said, telling himself that it wasn’t a lie, not really. You’d only successfully made it out of the house together once. Sarah scrunched her nose. “What, Baby Girl?”
“Nothing,” she sighed. “I was just hoping you guys would be friends is all. You’re both kind of alone down here, you know? I worry. I don’t want you doing nothing but sitting in the house doing… whatever weird old man stuff you do.”
“I don’t do weird old man stuff…”
“And leave her alone too long and the next thing you know she’s on the dating apps and she ends up going out with some total idiots,” she said, ignoring Joel’s protest entirely. “Really, Dad, her taste in men is shit and I’m not here to keep her busy, I was kind of counting on you here.”
Joel frowned.
“Not on you to protect her,” he said. Though, from what little he knew, Sarah was right. Your taste in men was shit. “And I’m sure she’s got better things to do than hang out with someone who does ‘old man things…’”
That was something that Joel had been thinking about a lot over the past two weeks. Yes, you seemed to be about as insatiable for him as he was for you and he didn’t have any damn clue as to why. But he could think of plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t be. How long was it going to be before you realized that he didn’t offer you much? He couldn’t take you to fancy restaurants every week or on nice trips. He wasn’t interested in another child and you were still young enough that you might want to be a mother. His body was often sore and worn after decades of damn near breaking himself to make a living. How much longer would you be wanting to pull him into restaurant bathrooms and make yourself come on his leg because you just couldn’t bear to wait anymore? How much longer could he text you to bitch about work while on a break at a job site and have you respond with a gif from Sharknado because you knew it would make him laugh? How much longer could he look at the selfies you sent him and think to himself “that’s my girl,” even though you weren’t even his girl now let alone in the future?
He was already in too deep with you, way too damn deep. Someone was going to have to pry you out of him, you’d already settled inside his skin and he liked it that way. Liked thinking of you first thing in the morning and just before he fell asleep, liked that you were the first thing on his mind when he got lunch at a food truck and he stumbled on something really good, liked that you showed up with his favorite beer and some obscure snack food when you came over to his place because you said you saw it and thought of him.
“Her taste in men isn’t dangerously bad,” Sarah waved him off. “Just… she tends to go for guys who definitely don’t deserve her, you know?”
“Yeah,” Joel sighed. “I know.”
Fuck, did he know.
“Anyway,” she said with a dramatic eye roll that reminded him of when she was a teenager. He smiled a little. “I’m in town until Wednesday! I know you’ll have to work…”
“I can take a few days off,” he said quickly. “Get Uncle Tommy to make sure shit doesn’t go sideways…”
“Awesome!” She perked up at that. “Because I think there are at least two Curtis and Vipers I haven’t gotten around to seeing yet and I’m going to require a handcrafted Dad burger - preferably grilled - while I’m in town. My apartment doesn’t let me have a grill on my balcony, it’s so dumb.”
“Probably a fire code thing, Baby Girl,” he smiled. “But I think we can swing some movies and a cookout while you’re here. Tommy’d love to see ya, Maria too.”
“Can we start by jumping in the pool?” She asked. “Because I haven’t gotten to swim in months.”
“Might be a bit cold…”
“Please,” she scoffed. “This is mid-summer weather in Seattle, plenty warm enough for a swim.”
Joel smiled.
“Whatever you want, Baby Girl.”
The water was definitely colder than Joel would normally jump into but, for Sarah, he’d do just about anything.
He was still getting used to drinking with his daughter, the two of them floating around the water with beers most of the day. Joel got out for a bit to make sandwiches - he put potato chips on Sarah’s just like he had when she was a kid - and he just listened to what she’d been up to, hanging on her every word.
Joel had always felt incredibly lucky to have Sarah as his daughter. There were the obvious reasons, of course. She was kind and thoughtful, she was smart as a whip and loved to do well in school to the point that he almost never had to tell her to do her homework, she actually liked spending time with him. But she never had a problem being open with him about damn near anything.
It wasn’t always the most pleasant experience - hearing about boy problems when he couldn’t actually intervene was harder than Joel had expected it to be - but he was grateful for it. He never had to wonder what his daughter was up to, she just told him.
Part of it, he was sure, was because he’d asked her to grow up too fast. He hadn’t meant to, of course, but it seemed to come with the territory of single parenthood. There was no one there to back him up when he had to work late, no one there to take over the child rearing when he was sick or just so exhausted from work that he slept through his damn alarm. Sarah fell into the role of second parent, sometimes raising herself as much as Joel had.
He was just happy she didn’t resent him for it. She seemed to recognize how hard he’d tried to give her everything, do everything he possibly could to make her happy and give her a good life. Even if it hadn’t always worked, he’d always tried. The fact that she’d made it to college on scholarship, that she’d finished towards the top of her class, that she’d gotten a good paying job doing something she liked to do, the fact that she was happy and doing something with her mind instead of breaking her body down like Joel was every damn day of his life was the proudest he’d ever been of anything.
Could he really risk his relationship with her for you? Yes, you made him happy. So fucking happy. You were the first thing in years that he felt like he really, truly wanted. And it had hit him hard, so fucking hard. It was like he’d saved up all his longing just for you, like it had been waiting for something powerful enough to show up and unleash it all and it had knocked him off his damn feet.
But you were Sarah’s best friend.
“So one thing that’s seriously lacking in the Pacific Northwest is good TexMex,” Sarah said, lounging on a pool float, her face tilted toward the sun, eyes closed. “Think we can go out for dinner tonight? I need enchiladas and tamales and I need them sooner rather than later.”
“Only if you don’t get mad that I ask for the real spicy salsa,” Joel said.
“How did I end up so cursed that my two favorite people love to melt their tongues off as a hobby?” Sarah sighed. “But fine, order the miserable stuff. I’ll just get the regular salsa like a normal person.”
Joel scoffed.
“The normal ship has sailed with you, Baby Girl. Me and Tommy around you so much? Never stood a chance.”
Just an hour later, he and Sarah were headed into her favorite Austin restaurant. Joel added it to his mental list of places to take you. It was Sarah’s favorite for a reason, after all.
“Table for two,” Joel held up two fingers to the hostess but Sarah cut him off.
“It’s three, actually,” she smiled, not looking at him.
“Three?” He frowned. She ignored him and just held up three fingers to the hostess. It took him until they were at the table to really put it together. “Sarah…”
“I’m here to see you but I really want to see her, too,” she said as she slid into the booth. “And I do think you guys will really get along if you actually give it a shot. Please, Dad? Give her a chance?”
A chance wasn’t the only thing he’d given you.
“Baby Girl, I’m sure she’d rather do something besides…”
“Besides what?” Your voice appeared over his shoulder, Joel turning toward the sound so fast it made his head spin. You smiled a little sheepishly.
“Hi.”
***
Well Joel clearly hadn’t been expecting you.
That boded just so well.
“Hey Bestie!” Sarah squealed and got out of the booth to throw her arms around your neck. You laughed and hugged her back. “Ugh, I miss you! The office sucks without you there. So does the rest of Seattle, honestly.”
You laughed.
“I miss you too,” you gave her a squeeze before the two of you separated. “I keep trying to convince the VP at this branch that I absolutely unequivocally need a junior copywriter on my team. He hasn’t bought it yet but I think if I just keep asking him I’ll wear him down and he’ll cave to my annoying tendencies and just give me whatever I want.”
“Oh so you’re playing hardball,” Sarah teased as she got back in the booth and you slid in beside her.
“Clearly yes,” you nodded sagely. “I read ‘The Art of War’ and just bothering people until they give up is the best battle tactic in the world…”
You turned to look at Joel who was watching you intently.
You hadn’t expected Joel to show up tonight anymore than he’d expected you. Sarah was playing you both like a goddamn fiddle. You’d worn a strappy, silky slip dress with a denim jacket over it thinking you were going out with your best friend, not going to be stuck trying to keep from staring at your who-the-fuck-knows-what sitting across from you.
Who also happened to be your best friend’s dad.
You tried not to think about that part.
“Figured I’d force you two to get to know each other better over margaritas,” Sarah said brightly. “I can’t let you both just sit and stare at a wall all by yourselves until I can move back to town…”
“I don’t stare at walls!” You protested. Sarah ignored you.
“So you can at least keep each other company,” she finished.
“Good to see you again, Joel,” you said, trying as hard as you could to not picture him naked across the table.
Which was really fucking hard.
His dark button down was rolled up to his elbows and fit his damn broad shoulders so perfectly all you could think about was the way he looked as he fucked into you, the way his muscles rippled through his chest and you had to fight to not bite down on them. His hair was tamed without being sculpted or overly styled and you wanted to run your fingers through it and sink your grip into his scalp as he ate you.
“You too,” he said.
You’d never had this visceral of a reaction to a man you’d fucked before, never, not even when you were a stupid teenager. Of course, you’d never tried to hide your relationship before, either.
But you had the feeling that wouldn’t matter with Joel. You’d feel this intensity toward him whether Sarah was beside you or not, whether you could be open about your affection for him or not.
And now you were going to have to sit across from him when he looked that damn good all through dinner.
The second the server came to the table you ordered a margarita. You had a feeling you were going to need the tequila.
It took conscious effort to pay attention to what Sarah was saying as she tried to bring up things she thought you and Joel had in common. Almost like she was trying to launch an ad campaign for each of you.
It felt like forever but you were sure you’d only been seated a few minutes when you gave up on not touching Joel. You carefully slid your foot out of your pump and started sliding it up his inner leg, starting near his ankle. Joel jumped a little in his chair at the contact, his eyes darting to you. You just raised your eyebrows at him as you took a drink from your margarita and slid your foot up his leg to his knee. He shifted in his seat, his eyes steadily on Sarah but you could tell he had to focus on her now, actively work to give her attention. You smirked a bit at that.
You kept the pattern up as the three of you waited for your food, Joel’s eyes always going a little wide when your toes made it to his inner thigh.
“Ugh, I’m starving,” Sarah groaned as a tray of sizzling fajitas passed your table. “Here, scootch out, I’m going to the bathroom. That’ll make the food come.”
“It always does,” you agreed, quickly shoving your foot back into your shoe and getting out of the booth.
You both watched as Sarah made her way across the restaurant, turning to Joel the second you knew she was out of earshot.
“Did you say anything?” You were whispering anyway.
“No,” he replied. “We hadn’t talked about it, didn’t seem like the time… Did you say somethin’?”
“Not a word,” you said.
“I really need you to cool it over there, Beautiful,” Joel said. Any other time, you’d think he was teasing you but his eyes looked open and earnest now. “We can’t just go into a bathroom right now and it’s already a fucking miracle I haven’t tried to rip that goddamn dress off you, Jesus Christ, you can’t just show up places lookin’ that damn good…” “You’re one to talk!” You replied, incredulous, as you looked down at his exposed, tan, muscled forearms and back up at his face. “Fucking hell, Joel!”
He smirked a little.
“That’s all it takes with you, huh?” He teased, leaning across the table toward you. “Just a little bit of skin and you’re outta control?”
“Oh fuck off,” you rolled your eyes but grinned a little all the same. “I know you know what the rolled up sleeves thing does to women.”
“I promise I do not,” he said, watching over your shoulder now. “But you’ll have to enlighten me later…”
Sarah came back to the table and her face fell.
“Shit, that usually works,” she sighed. “Alright, scoot in, we can just trade spots.”
You obeyed and slid over, purposely leaning over the table as you did, giving Joel full view of your bra below your dress as you did. He was all but glaring at you as you sat back in the booth.
Consciously, you knew you shouldn’t be pushing him like this. For starters, this was not how you wanted Sarah to find out. Assuming she was ever going to find out.
But you shouldn’t be trying to frustrate Joel. Not like this, not so early on in your… whatever the fuck this was.
You had a tendency to do this, to bend things until they broke the second something was looking like it could get serious, the second that it looked like it’d be worth the time and the effort. You were starting to think it was something your subconscious did on purpose. If you sabotaged the relationship early, there wasn’t the same kind of risk. Push the guy too far and he’d break things off with you and you could return to the relative emotional safety of dating apps and bars. Only ever go out with someone for a few weeks and it wouldn’t hurt that bad if they left.
And they would leave. They always left. You might be worth the time for a bit but you weren’t worth the trouble for anything real, that much had been made clear to you in the years you’d spent dating around. It had gotten you hurt when you were young and stupid, back when you were Sarah’s age. Now, you fucking knew better.
You knew better than to get anywhere close to what you were starting to feel with Joel.
And here you were, doing it anyway, with your best friend’s dad.
So of course your first reaction was to push him. Push, push, push. It’s what you did.
You stirred your melting margarita.
You’d never been more relieved to have food brought to your table.
“Thanks so much for coming out tonight!” Sarah hugged you goodbye in the parking lot, the awkward, hesitant conversation at the table through dinner still tense over you.
“It was so great to see you!” You hugged her back and kissed her cheek. “Seriously, I’m wearing the bosses down, start packing now because I miss you too much.”
She laughed.
“I’ll be on the first plane out once I get a job offer,” she said. “Either way, I’ll be back for the holidays, we have to hang out then. Just us girls at least once, promise.”
You smiled a little, hoping Sarah would still want to talk to you at the holidays.
“Sounds perfect.”
Joel gave you a tight smile and a nod.
“Talk to you soon?” He said, his voice too open and honest to fit the shared awkwardness of your position feet apart in the parking lot.
“Yeah,” you smiled. “Text me?”
“Sure,” he smiled back.
You poured yourself a glass of wine the second you were in the door, only pausing to take your shoes off as you made your way to the kitchen. You settled in on the couch without bothering to change, carrying the bottle of wine with you, and you put on some shitty Netflix reality show you could zone out and barely pay attention to.
You were four episodes deep when your phone lit up.
“Fuck that was hard,” Joel texted.
You smiled a little.
“Was that hard or were you hard?” You texted back.
“Both,” he replied almost immediately. Your smile grew and you downed the last of the wine.
You hadn’t had enough to drink to be drunk but you’d had enough that it made you feel… bold. Like you wanted to try something new.
You took off your jacket and slid the straps of your dress down so your cleavage was spilling over the top of it, your breasts barely contained by it. You took a selfie, a needy look on your face, and sent him the picture.
“Need help with that?” You asked.
“Jesus Christ,” he texted back almost immediately. “Good thing Sarah just went to call some boy she started seeing back in Washington, can’t just send a guy shit like that and expect him to sit still.”
You bit your lip for a second, getting an idea. You headed for your room and shimmied out of the dress before you put on the sexiest bra you owned and switched to the matching panties. You posed in the full length mirror in the corner of your room, one leg out, a hand on your hip.
“What about shit like this?” You asked as you sent the picture along.
“Really fucking mean for you to send that when you know I can’t come take it off you,” he texted back.
You flopped down on your stomach on your bed, reminded of how you felt texting guys when you were younger and you had to make sure you didn’t go over your texting limit for the month.
“You can always fight back you know,” you said. “I can’t come rip your clothes off either.”
“You trying to get me to sext with you?” He asked.
“Maybe.”
It took a few minutes before he sent you a picture. He was in his room, stripped down to his boxer briefs. He fisted his cock through the fabric of them, the veins on his hand prominent.
“Something like this?” He asked.
You groaned, your hand sliding to your clit before you even thought about it. You rolled onto your back and took a picture of your hand slipping into your panties before sending it on.
“Just like that,” you replied.
“Fuck.”
The one word was all he sent for a minute before he followed it up with a picture of his cock in his hand. You moaned at the sight of him, a pearl of pre-come leaking from his swollen head. You wanted to swallow it up, lick up and down his thick shaft, take all of him in your mouth until you were choking on him and he spilled down your throat.
“Tried to make this last but you’re too fucking much for me,” he texted. “Couldn’t wait.”
You took off your bra and tossed it to the floor before taking a handful of your breast in your hand, holding the phone high over your head, high enough that it could capture your needy expression and the way you were touching yourself.
“Neither could I.”
Usually, when you fucked yourself, you used toys. You had a few that you’d become partial to over the years of cycling through men and relationships, the fake dicks in your life lasting a whole hell of a lot longer than the real ones.
Tonight, you didn’t need one. Didn’t think you could pull yourself away from touching your own body long enough to pull one out, not with Joel’s face and body and cock on the brain. You slid your hand down your chest, your stomach, back to your pussy. You rubbed your clit in little circles with your index finger as you stretched your middle finger down, down, down toward your dripping hole.
When his next message came through, you dropped your phone in your rush to open it and you scrambled to pick it up with one hand, your other one too occupied to want to do anything else.
This time, it was a video. His large hand was working his thick length, his cock still looking big even in his grasp that dwarfed your own. He worked his cock slowly, his thumb sweeping over the head and collecting the pre-come before he slid it firmly down with quiet moan.
“Fuck, I need you,” his voice was soft, a whisper. “Need to feel that perfect fuckin’ pussy…”
You were about to rewatch the video, your mouth watering, when he texted again.
“Can I call you?”
You didn’t respond. Instead, you just called him, putting the phone to speaker and setting it on your chest between your breasts.
He answered on the first ring.
“Hey beautiful,” he said, voice low and dark and needy. “Fuck, I gotta be quiet…”
“I know,” you said, whispering back even though you didn’t have a reason to. “Don’t care, as long as I can hear you.”
“Tell me what you’re doin’ to yourself,” he was almost panting. “What you’re thinkin’ about…”
“I’m rubbing my clit,” you moaned. “Got one finger inside of myself, thinking about you eating me out last night…”
“Fuck you tasted so good,” his voice became a little more strained. “Wanna taste you right now.”
You moaned and fucked yourself a little harder, a little faster, your eyes closed in pleasure.
“Add another finger,” he said. “Want you to work up to this cock, want you thinking about me deep in you when you come.”
“Fuck Joel,” you were panting now, too, as you added another finger.
“Tell me what you’re thinking now,” he whispered.
“You pushing into me,” you groaned it. “Opening me up for you…”
“Fuck, Beautiful, you’re gonna fuckin’ kill me.”
You heard the pace of his hand increase on the other end of the phone and you worked your pussy a little harder and faster, too, whimpering as you did.
“Can you fit a third finger?” He panted.
“Yes,” you managed, getting desperate, your body starting to feel tight, all the heat of you drawing deep into yourself.
“Add it,” he groaned. “Fuck yourself deep, hard. Fuck yourself like I fucked you last night, how I’d fuck you right now if I were there.”
You obeyed, thrusting your fingers in as deep as you could reach, whimpering at the stretch that you knew had nothing on his thick cock.
“You were so fucking deep,” your legs were restless, the tightness extending so far down that you knew your orgasm was going to make your whole body quake. “Fuck, you’re so goddamn big, Joel…”
“And you take me so fucking well,” he panted. “Take me like you were made to take this cock, fuck!”
“I was made to take you,” you whimpered, desperate and aching. “Made to make you come, need you to fucking come, please Joel, please come for me…”
“Fuck, fuck, I’m coming!” It was a choking, strangled whisper and you heard him muffle his moaning in a pillow, the sound of his pleasure sending you over the edge.
It was the hardest you’d ever come from your own hand, harder than you’d ever come with a vibrator, almost as hard as you came with Joel deep inside you the night before. Your body throbbed with it, so much that it felt like your fingers might break as they stuffed your overwrought pussy full. You all but sobbed as you kept working your clit, even as it was too much, fucking yourself through your own orgasm the way you knew Joel would if he were buried inside you instead of in his own fist. Once it was over, you slowly, gently, pulled your hand away from your dripping slit.
“Fucking hell, Beautiful,” he said after a minute, still trying to catch his breath. You smiled and laughed a little. “Christ, I hope Sarah didn’t hear that.”
“You stayed a lot quieter than me,” you were whispering again. It was fun to whisper into the phone with him, like you were going behind your parents’ backs with it.
“Still,” he said before he sighed. “I gotta go clean up, you made me make a hell of a mess.”
“You’re one to talk,” you smirked a little, looking at the slick gathered on your fingers.
“Can I text you tomorrow while you’re at work?” He asked quietly. “Something tells me I’m gonna miss you like crazy.”
“Course,” you smiled, settling down into your mattress. “Text me whenever you want, I always want to hear from you.”
Maybe it was the post-orgasm haze but you didn’t care that it sounded desperate.
“Good,” he said. “Because hearin’ from you always makes my damn day.”
You smiled at that.
“Miss you, Beautiful.”
You smiled bigger.
“Miss you, too.”

Crimson Lights: Chapter 1
After another long day at the vet clinic and battling the crazy drivers on my trek home, I pull into the garage of my building. Finally, I sigh to myself.
I drive up to the fifth floor and start looking for parking, getting excited when I see an open spot opposite the door to the elevator. I maneuver into the space, then sit with my hands on the steering wheel while leaning back onto the headrest. It shouldn’t be this hard to get motivated to leave the car, especially when I’m going home to an empty apartment. But it’s been tough adjusting to this new town and new job over the past few months. Getting the offer to take over the clinic came at the perfect time, just as I started questioning why I was still in Seattle after being left by the guy I moved there with because I thought he was the one. It had been 2 years since I ended our relationship, and I had come to hate the apartment and city full of harsh memories. And here I was in a new town where I knew no one and had no support.
After breathing for a few seconds, I exit the car. Opening the back door, I grab my backpack, and carefully stack the 3 paper bags filled with groceries in my arms. While balancing everything, I reach back in to pick up a small box of ginger ale.
As I teeter around the door, I hear behind me, “You coming this way?”
“Yeah!” I yell over my shoulder. I bump the back door closed with my hip and turn around. My breath catches as I see him holding the door, the hot guy I’ve been glimpsing from a distance since I moved into the building 3 months ago. Tall, dark, and handsome. Korean, I think, with beautiful brown eyes, black hair combed back, and wearing a very tailored dark maroon suit jacket, with matching pants and a crisp white business shirt. He was always dressed impeccably. And that ass was always a highlight.
Trying to keep calm, I walk towards the door. I can’t believe that he finally talks to me and I look like...this. He stands to the side, allowing me to pass. As I walk through the doorway, my shoulder bumps the frame and I start to juggle my bags. Slightly flustered, I mumble, “Ah shit!”
“Here, let me help you with that,” he says, his voice low and smooth. He takes one of the brown grocery bags from my arms, his hand grazing gently across my skin and sending shivers down my spine.
Down girl! I hadn’t been touched by a man in almost two years, and even that accidental touch was enough to get my dormant fires started again. “Thanks. I don’t know why I thought I could carry all this shit in one go.”
I hear him chuckle behind me as we walk towards the open elevator door. Inside, I see his usual companion. I’ve often seen them together in the building and figured they were friends or related. He was also a very good looking Korean, but a bit shorter and muscular. Where the first guy was svelte, this one was thick, but in a good way, and also had a nice ass. “What floor?” the friend asks.
“Ten please.” Buff guy hits the button for 10, then swipes a key card before pressing the button for the 25th floor. Interesting, I think to myself, the penthouse. They’re hot AND rich.
We ride the elevator in silence. I think about saying something, but am not sure what. Thankfully, the door opens. I turn to the first guy, “I can get that now,” nodding towards the bag.
“Nah, I got you,” he says motioning for me to exit with his arm outstretched.
“Okay then. I’m not too far down.” I nod to the buff one, who nods back, then I  walk out and head down the hallway to my door. I grab my keys to unlock the deadbolt, pushing the door open and dropping my bags onto the bench next to it. “Thanks,” I say as I take the bag from him. “I honestly thought chivalry was dead.”
“Dying, not dead,” he counters with a smirk. As the corners of his lips turn up, two deep dimples appear, as if he needed to get more handsome.
I chuckle and try not to stare, “Yeah, definitely dying. Thanks again.”
“Not a problem. Hope you have a good evening.” He turns and walks back to the elevator.
“Bye,” I say as I watch him and that ass saunter down the hallway, the tailoring of the suit highlighting his broad shoulders and narrow waist. Damn, I think to myself as I enter my apartment and kick the door closed behind me.
I move all the grocery bags to the kitchen counter and spend the next 10 minutes putting everything away. My mind kept thinking back to the elevator. Why didn’t I say anything? I didn’t even think to ask his name. I shake my head, thinking about the missed opportunity, as I walk towards my bedroom while peeling off my t-shirt. I also remove my bra and jeans and throw everything into the hamper. I slip into a pair of black sweatpant shorts and throw on a cropped tank top. Afterward, I grab a thin headband and use it to tie my curls into a messy bun.
I walk back to the kitchen to grab a beer, and then plop onto the couch. Time to catch up on this week’s Real Housewives. Nothing like mindless entertainment to keep me from thinking about my missed shot.
About halfway through my second episode, I hear a knock at the door. I usually don’t have any guests on Friday nights unless I order delivery, so I’m a bit perplexed as to who it could be.
I grab my beer and walk to the door, opening it to find the hot guy from earlier leaning against the door frame, this time dressed in all black. Black jeans, black t-shirt, black baseball cap. His posture exudes confidence.
“Hey,” he says, his voice warm and inviting. As he speaks, his gaze locks onto mine with an intensity that catches me off guard. “I realized that I never introduced myself earlier. I’m Chris.” He extends his hand towards me, a small smile playing on his lips.
“Hi Chris,” I say, placing my hand in his. “Kay.”
"Kay," he repeats softly, his voice a deep, smooth rumble as he gives my hand a firm shake. Instead of letting go, his thumb makes a light, almost imperceptible circle on my wrist, sending shivers down my spine. "Nice to finally put a name to the face." He drops my hand and his gaze travels slowly from my face down the length of my body and back up again, taking in every curve and angle with an intensity that makes me feel both exposed and desirable. His tongue gently licks his bottom lip, a small hint of hunger flashing in his eyes. I start to feel a bit self-conscious about my choice of loungewear, but there's also a thrill at being watched so closely by him. The heat from his gaze spreads through me, making me slightly flustered and I can feel my heart beating hard in my chest. I’m hoping he can’t hear it. “You’ve been in the building a few months now, right? New to town?”
“Yeah. I moved here from Seattle,” I reply, trying to keep my cool. “Had to escape that fucking place.”
“Oh really! Everyone I’ve ever heard talk about Seattle loved it. I’ve only been there once for a business trip.” He reaches his left arm up to hold onto the frame. “I guess it wasn’t for you.” He leans in a bit closer to me. “Let’s hope you have a better time here,” he says softly with a charming smile, dimples fully on display.
“Well things are certainly looking up,” I say with a grin, trying to match his tone. “So do you always welcome the new single women to the building?” I raise an eyebrow as I take a sip of my beer.
He licks his lips again as he squints his eyes at me. “No.” He exhales slowly. “Just the hot ones.” A wide smile spreads across his face, dimples reemerging.
Heat rises to my cheeks as I struggle to maintain my composure. I open my mouth to say something, but shut it when nothing comes out. I usually don’t get this flustered around guys, but there’s something about him that makes me a bit nervous, although curious.
He leans back and ends the awkward silence by saying, “I’m hosting a party tomorrow night for my colleagues and business associates. If you don’t have plans, feel free to drop by. 25th floor. I’d love to see you come.”
I burst out laughing, unable to hold it back.
He chuckles shyly, releasing the door frame to lift the cap off his head and using his right hand to run his fingers through his hair before replacing the cap. “Yeah, I heard it when I said it.” He bites his bottom lip. “I meant I’d love to see you there.” His gaze is steady as he waits for my response.
I smirk and say, “Thanks for the invite. I’ll think about it.” I feel a rush of excitement at his invitation. There’s something about Chris that draws me in. Maybe it’s his easy charm or the way he exudes confidence without being overbearing. Or maybe it’s just the fact that he’s ridiculously attractive.
“Oh, you’ll think about it?” he says sassily, before chuckling. “You do that,” he counters. “Most people will arrive around 9:00. Bye Kay.” He gives me another once over with his eyes before turning to walk down the hall.
As I watch him walk away, my heart still racing from the encounter, I can’t yet fully process his invitation. “Bye Chris.” I call out behind him.
I close and lock the door. “Wow!” I say to the empty room. I lean against the wall and think about what it would feel like to have his hands move across my body like his eyes did and to have those plump pink lips pressed against mine. I feel a flutter of anticipation in my stomach. I take another swig of my beer, and place it on the counter before walking determinedly to my bedroom. Chris has been showing up in all of my masturbatory moments since I first saw him walking to his car my second day in the building. Now I had a name for the face I’d been dreaming of.
