My Beloved Susie Rose

We've had such chilly inclement weather and the heavy rain's not been kind to any late blooms, but since taking Susie out of her pot and planting her in the ground, she's really flourished and is giving a gorgeous late show. Hope you enjoy the photos.

I haven't managed to capture well the change of shade from the deeply coloured buds, through all the stages to the pale fading bloom, but at each stage, they really are lovely and the leaves are quite the best of any rose I've ever grown. They're small, solid and a beautiful glossy dark green with a serrated edge for plenty of interest.

Goldfinches

In the UK these lovely little birds are all year round visitors. Some may decide to migrate and over winter in France, or even as far away as southern Spain, but others stay. Along with Long Tailed Tits, I’m always extremely pleased and excited to see them.

Sunflowers and teasel in the garden definitely attract the Goldfinch and they enjoy sunflower heart and nyger seeds if you provide them. Their specially pointed beaks allow them to dig deep for the seeds. In our garden they also take full advantage of fresh water in the bird bath.

Juniors lack the bright red colouring which develops later and both sexes share the same marking. Some say that the red around the eye extends further in males, but to be honest, it’s a fairly minute difference and really hard to tell. Maybe the bird on our left (above) is the male?
