In order to digest a fish whole, a bird requires a two-chambered stomach. The first chamber secretes acid, which helps break down bones and scales. The second (gizzard) grinds up pieces of food into much smaller pieces.

Our birdfeeders went missing so I decided to try making one. I think I might still need to widen the holes some but I was having trouble since the only thing sharp enough to cut this was a box cutter. Might improve on it some if it winds up getting used - use a soldering iron (outside of course) to clean up the holes, switch the handle to wire, etc.
But at least I got to keep my yule tradition of feeding birds!

Junco Madness on my balcony this season!
Ever since the cold and snow came, they have been mobbing my bird feeders. I love these little guys so much. I'm glad I can over them a safe and reliable spot to come to.

As the intership period coming to end our volunteers share their Heartfelt Experiences with We for Education Welfare Society.
During their time with We for Education Welfare Society, they have embarked on a journey that’s touched their hearts in ways we never imagined. From feeding stray dogs and crafting bird feeders to setting up water pots for birds and people, every moment has been filled with purpose and compassion. Organizing rallies for Anti-Drug Day allowed them to contribute to something greater than themselves. Through these experiences, they have not only developed new skills but also formed lasting connections and grown in ways we never expected.
This journey has been one of deep fulfillment and joy, and we're grateful for every opportunity they had to make a difference."

Do American Robins Eat Seeds?
Tumblr media
People often wonder about the diet of American robins. A frequent question is whether these birds eat seeds. Let's explore the American robin's eating habits more deeply.
American Robins' Varied Diet
Favorite Foods: American robins love eating fruits, berries, and worms. In spring and summer, they often eat worms and insects. When it's colder, they switch to fruits and berries.
Hunting Technique: They have a special way of finding worms. They listen, look closely at the ground, and quickly pull the worms out.
Importance of Diet Variety: This diet change is important for their survival. Eating different foods helps them get the nutrients they need throughout the year.
Insects and Worms: The Main Meal
During the breeding season, American robins focus on eating insects and worms, especially earthworms. These foods are rich in protein, a nutrient essential for robins at this time of year. The high-protein diet serves several critical purposes:
Strength and Health: The protein in these foods helps the robins maintain their strength and overall health. It's a demanding time, and they need all the energy they can get.
Egg Production: For female robins, protein is vital for egg production. Healthy eggs are the first step in raising a new generation.
Feeding Chicks: Once the eggs hatch, both parents feed their chicks. Baby robins need a protein-rich diet for rapid growth and development. The parents make many daily trips to bring protein-filled insects and worms to their nestlings.
Energy for Caregiving: Caring for young ones is energy-intensive. Parents need to be alert and active to protect and feed their chicks. The protein from their diet gives them this much-needed energy.
Health of Chicks: The health and survival rate of the chicks depend heavily on the quality of food. Protein ensures that the chicks develop strong muscles and feathers.
Recovery and Preparation: Post-breeding, robins use protein to recover their strength. It helps them prepare for the next season or migration if they migrate.
By focusing on a high-protein diet during the breeding season, robins ensure they are in the best condition to raise and care for their young, securing the next generation's survival.
Seasonal Changes in Diet
The diet of American robins changes with the seasons. In spring and summer, they mainly eat insects and worms. This is because these foods are plentiful and easy to find. Robins are skilled at hunting worms, listening to them, and watching for them in the soil.
When fall arrives, the number of insects and worms decreases. This is when robins start eating more fruits and berries. These foods become their main source of nutrition. Berries and fruits are vital for robins in the colder months. They provide the necessary energy to stay warm.
Finding worms is tough in winter when the ground is often frozen. So, robins rely heavily on fruits and berries. They may even visit bird feeders for extra food. This adaptability to different food sources is key to their survival. It shows how robins are smart and resourceful birds.
By changing their diet with the seasons, robins ensure they always have something to eat. This adaptability is a great example of how animals survive in changing environments.
Seeds in Their Diet?
While American robins can eat seeds, there they have other food preferences. They usually prefer insects, worms, fruits, and berries. Seeds might be a part of their diet, but they're not a significant portion.
This varied diet helps robins to stay healthy and adapt to different environments. Their ability to eat different kinds of food depending on the season shows how versatile and resilient these birds are.
