That Funny Story

There's this school of mine. Currently existing in my blurred memories. I used to study there. Actually it wasn't study though;) It was one hell of a ride boy. Every day. Every class. Every minute. Me, just out there enjoying every fucking second of my existence. You don't even think about the moments until all of these comes to an end and you stand there stranded. Perhaps even crying.

'Sarvodaya'. Your uday is almost certain in a school with such a name. It was a co-ed school. But only for the sake of it. Otherwise all of us boys have had this hidden prejudice towards the other gender. Like if you talk with any girl then it was considered something like a sin. You can even call it male ego if you want. But hey! we were all just bunch of kids then. So, the situation was so bad that we guys wouldn't even ask for our pens if it went over to the side where 'they' used to sit. Our territories were marked with an invisible chalk. Haha..you may laugh or think of it as a truly childish behavior but it was what it was. You'd better understand if you knew the conventional surroundings at that time.

We didn't know the concept of boyfriend/ girlfriend. Not even that a boy and a girl can be friends as well. And I'm talking about the time when I was in 7th and 8th standard. Well, even then I was the 'reading type'. I used to read all our literary books and any other material that I could get my hands on. An exceptionally ordinary teenager dreaming about all the filmy type romance eh!. Not a very novel story. Well, That's me bruh..what can I say..😅 It was during the 9th standard. Pretty much every 'only boys' friend groups of ours had this tendency to make fun of each other by imagining them in relationship with random girl from their class. Words like 'bhabhi' were common at the time. Pretty common even today, right? Some things just stays the same for eternity. There's always this one girl in every standard who's a notch above everybody else. Even we had that diva in our class and by default I and every other friend of mine outright rejected the idea of me and her ever being together. Then there was this second girl who happened to be the best friend of that diva. Them, Those stupid friends of mine had mindset of Gulshan from 'Hunter'. Always go for the second best. I wonder where the writers got the idea from. Chill, I won't sue them for copyright;). So, yeah my friends, They used to tease me with her name everytime they got a chance. Whether it's her name being spoken aloud during attendance by teacher or when she entered the class. Every fucking time. Those fuckers never missed a chance. Than the placebo effect happened. Even I started to think like those bastards and felt like having a special connect with her. Well, when you're of that age you also feel that spark in your eyes and few butterflies flying in your stomach when you see someone. More or less, it was happening .

So, for the first time in the history of our school, out of blue we decided to do something about this dillema. To move ahead. It was consensually decided to propose her on valentine's day as it was just a month n half away. We planned to give her a love letter. Being a young school boy reading about all this love stories, this was the only possible and sensible solution for me and the gang as I was way too shy to go and talk with her in person. We started writing. It took us a month or so to finally finish that letter after 6th draft. That too in english, a very proud thing to do for me. Then we decorated it with designs. Those designs were from a personal collection of one of my best friends. Thus we made this beautiful four page letter - three pages of "artistic" designs and one of content!. Maybe this was the moment I knew that even writing content for living would work for me.

The big day arrived. We used to go in the same tution classes but were in different batches. We were in respective batches. So, between this two classes, we used to have had a buffer time of five minutes. This was the perfect opportunity to act upon and deliver that letter. So, that day her class got over and she was going back on her pink ladybird (with a basket in front) with four of her friends. I followed her on my friend's bike and just drop that letter of mine in her basket out of blue. She was startled and with confusion in her eyes she asked "what's this?". testosterone was flowing through me like crazy and on the peak of my hormones, I replied, "everything is mentioned in the letter itself. Read it." Mike drop and then left.

Now that period started. The period of waiting. When nights are longer than days and vise versa. So, during that time, our gang was kinda wanted gang in the school so, the principal himself instructed us to not be present even in the school compound during the recess. I used to sent a spy of mine to observe the happenings of classroom because all the girls used to stay in the classroom only. That spy came with a report that the group of around 8-10 girls were sitting in a circle and among them, the scholar of our class is deciphering your letter. I was like bouy, this is not a very bright sign. I sighed and waited. Waited for a few more days and exactly after a week, when we all were playing in ground, our peon came and exactly at that moment I knew that chacha were coming for me only. I was totally like 'chalo bulava aaya hai' and went with him like a badass. We passed by the principal's cabin and and questions started bubbling up in my mind about what our actual destination would be. He showed me the gate of trustee's office. I went in and stood there. Completely frozen. The trustee of our school was sitting there in his usual chair. In front of him was my dad, sitting in one chair and next to him was the girl's grandpa. With a xerox copy of my letter (..why xerox copy man? Should've brought the original one for the sake of creativity.) and then the verbal despoilment started. On top of that, her grandpa used to work in the police commissioner office. That oldie literally ripped me apart that day. It lasted for whole 45 minutes and then I went back to class. Even after school, I was not ready to go home. I was literally shivering. That path, that daily route of mine felt very different and scary that day. Haven felt even scarier. Finally, I reached home. Ate my lunch. Then had few slaps from you know who.

This whole story spread like a wildfire through out school. Our very first attempt at this tender thing called relationship and love had gone horribly and miserably wrong. After that incident, The boards came. The 10th. During that whole year, I wrote six love letters for my friends. (maybe this is how the journey started.) and guess what? All of them were accepted and those guys experienced the sweet taste of love. Well well well, I concluded that in my case, maybe the fault was not in our stars but the planning and execution. My content was great, though. Chuckles!

Well, don't we all have that one little corner in our hearts where we store such stories. Where we bury all the fun moments of our school life, The stories of our Herculean adventures, all the laughters and cries, so that we can dig them up and revisit those beautiful and precious memories whenever we feel down. Maybe this is precisely why I just love the movie '96' so much.

As they say, the story of love, it never gets old.

My friend Suresh and me were lazily walking down from Lal bahadur colony- Peelamedu ( near gopal naidu school) towards our usual hamlet- NATIONAL MODERN

BAKERY near PSG college of tech --better known as NMB for our usual discussions, tea and puff. Today- it was more interesting as we had some interesting topic in mind to discuss.. girls and love ( or so we felt). YOu can imagine the kind of feeling you get when you know that this girl is always looking, smiling, indicating -but yet nothing concrete and she is a friend..a special friend. you just want to talk-- if it is this or that or could it be.. who else can support your discussion than your best friend.. Suresh- also had his share of tales to tell and that time of the evening --around 7 pm.. post a drizzle-- and cool chill air gracing us.. we set out discussing this topic for a good 3 kms.. As we trudged along -- the discussion opened. SS - dey- enakku onnume purilaya.. avala kindal pannitte irundome enga classla..but slolwy-- things seem to be changing maple.. john and alizeh.

John is the most accurate definition of tall, dark and handsome. We have known each other since we were eleven, or twelve. We were in the same circle of friends—who grew up together from pre-puberty kids to teenagers with keypad mobile phones and independence—but sadly, we rarely talk. I never said ‘hi’ whenever we passed by, and neither did he. But he knows whenever I am present, and I would always secretly find his face when everyone gathers. We only exchanged smiles, occassionally, and communicates with each other via friends, very subtly.

There was a certain unspoken agreement that when your best friend has a crush on a guy, you do not talk to the guy. So despite not talking to John because Alizeh likes him so dearly, I have spend most evenings sitting at the bus stop down the school hill, watching the boys play football in their shorts. He was there. Tall, dark and handsome. His hair is always in a classic Frankie Muniz updo, and his eyes were dark, mysterious and calm. He was funny, and he likes cracking jokes, but he also retreats himself into a shy demeanour shortly after.

Alizeh talks about him nearly half of the time we hung out together in school and after school, so by time, I was able to get used to listening to stories of John. And when we were fourteen, they dated each other. I guess he must’ve liked her for so long too. Alizeh is a lovely person, and while she might not be the star student in our school, she walks with grace and beauty. Jet black spill of hair tucked behind her ears, and soft white skin with a subtle tan that reminds you of thick cheesecakes. There is a certain politeness in her smile, as if she was playing Dutchess all the time, but they were the most warm, genuine smile.

One afternoon when I was thirteen, I smashed the little glass swan John gave me for my twelfth birthday and practiced playing Game of Love on my father’s guitar until the tip of my fingers burned in pain.

Alizeh moved away when we were fifteen, and I still hadn’t talked to John in the most casual and direct conversation. By that time, I was able to recite the entire Science syllabus, played many songs on the guitar and sat with the boys of my class in my pinafore while they helped changing the strings of my father’s guitar.

John and I only started properly talking when we were sixteen, but not much words are exchanged. Most of the time, there were silence. Which had led us to this very moment—when he was waiting outside the gates of my house on his motorcycle on a Wednesday evening.

I refused to wear the helmet, because we were only heading a few blocks away from my house for Maths tution. I have no problem with walking, but our friend suggested that he gave me a lift.

“Okay, get behind me,” he said, already mounted on his motorcycle. His voice was slow and soft.

I climbed behind him and held on to my tote bag, which was sandwiched between us. He made a turn and we left. Again, very few words were exchanged between us—as it was in school and during tuition.

I remember evenings from my teenage years very faintly, but often times the recalling would come in the most beautiful form I could never explain—like old recordings of the five senses in the most comforting way that makes you feel like old memories are things that are so intangible, no matter how close they are to your heart. Often decorated with orange sunsets or gloomy skies, and framed with beautiful bokeh or grey diamonds of raindrops, my recollections of youth revolves around everything that was truly innocent.

Innocent, but nothing was within my grasp. Not the one I couldn’t control, at least.

Worn out debate cards tucked into my tote bag. Pages of my physics schoolbook turned chilly by the air-conditioning of my own bedroom, untouched and clean from scribbles. I lay in bed with my limbs sprawled, eyes staring into the nothingness that was on the ceiling. The five o’clock evening sun cast orange hues through slits of the curtains, on whichever surface it could touch.

Love Is Only A Feeling by The Darkness was playing. My lips mouthed its lyrics, my throat releasing nearly-inaudible vocals. It was an anthem. Music was my element.

It was also sad how music is something that guitar-playing John is something we could always bond over. Yet besides motorcycle rides and tuitions, our conversations were almost obsolete. Words exchanged between us could compare to the likeliness of solar eclipses.

Alizeh was long gone. Distance was a difficult barrier when you’re a highschooler of the 2000s—and the Nokias and Sony Ericssons were only promises on one end. Phone calls and instant messages with Alizeh became less and less, until one day, it stopped. Like a long-distance relationship with a faint ending, friendship faded into the background, like a slow score of an eventful scene.

Without Alizeh, eye contacts happened more often.

I have never had a proper conversation with John, and even two years after Alizeh has left us in this smaller, peaceful town, I still have not had a proper conversation with John. I regretted smashing the glass swan when I was thirteen, but we don’t carry or keep things that no longer serves us.

As Alizeh faded into the void behind us, making her presence no longer felt among our group of not-so tight knit friends, I breathed a new life into my courage. No, not the kind of courage you need to speak in front of the crowd, carrying the school’s name on your forehead and aiming for the grand prize.

Courage is a funny thing. It was as if we all exists on different planes and we view courage differently. One could fear the act of making decisions for a group of teenage mankind and strutting forward spouting instructions from his mouth. I have no such fear. One could fear the act of being left alone with a person she had known for five to six years, fear of stuttering and fidgeting not knowing what to talk about. That would be my fear.

For the rest of my high school days, I knew his full name. I knew his birthday. I knew his family, I visited his house. I knew that he broke his hand in the sixth grade from an accident. I knew how he liked his hair done. I knew he enjoys his motorcycle rides to and fro school in the evening. I knew what everyone else knew. I didn’t know what lies below the surface instead—insecurities, fears, everything personal and everything sentimental. Yet times spent whenever he was in my scene, my field of vision, and my presence; they felt somewhat cinematic. Time slows down to make way for the sun to give its golden warmth upon us, and whenever it was raining, alternative rock music often played in independent movies plays in its own plane. But that was ultimately everything. It was as if we have a cackling chemistry, but we never had an existing bond between us. It was like a metal bridge being built from both sides, having never met in the middle.

The town where I grew up in was such a small town, but when you have everything so close around you, physically and sentimentally, it becomes your entire world. There was nothing you could lose and even with the lack of this and that, everything felt sufficient. I have been fed with the idea of a wistful high school experience, from the sappy books I’ve read. I found out later that I was wrong, that I thought everything I had in my teenage years would stick with me throughout the rest of my life, growing with me. It’s such a beautiful thought—to be able to transition into a much more serious part of life with the people you grew up with.

Alizeh was the first warning that not everything lasts, and people grow apart. What the town gives you to nurture your growth doesn’t necessarily cling with you as you transition. Butterflies don’t bring their coccoon with them after metamorphosis. The first to leave was my best friend. And then, everything else.

John looked at me with obscure sorrow in his eyes. It was that one evening where our friends were as energetic despite the lack of sun. John’s hands clung onto his motorcycle as he stood beside it. Like everyone else, we weren’t in the rush to get home.

I was prepared—as usual—to go with him. After several times, he was used to giving me a ride from and back home. I forgot when did the favour turned into an unspoken one. Perhaps we took it as an arrangement, which unfortunately did not last under certain circumstances—changes.

But I was waiting for him to climb onto his motorcycle first, so I could climb behind him. That’s the way it is always, isn’t it?

He didn’t. Instead, he looked at me with obscure sorrow in his eyes. Head slightly tilted sideways, updo unwavered—he looked at me like someone looked at a nostalgic past, something he longed for but can never touch.

I didn’t ask questions. I never do. We never have proper conversations. I felt like asking would lead to and intrusion of personal space of his.

He opened his mouth and sucked his breath. My friends were already on the road, with laughter so loud it might have echoed the entire neighbourhood. He wasn’t curious enough to see what was so amusing.

And that was when I finally asked, “what?”

“I’m moving.” He said so with a tone that was only meant to be heard by me and no one else. I turned to the rest of my friends, but they were too occupied to be in the conversation—or perhaps John had only meant it to be a one-to-one announcement. The rest of our friends could probably wait.

“You’re moving?” I repeated rethorically—what else am I supposed to say?

He nodded. “I’m leaving next month.”

“Where to?”

“KL. The big city.”

I said nothing else. I clutched my fist, hoping not to look indifferent about his announcement of departure. But I couldn’t bring myself to produce a proper spoken response, or any response at all. I couldn’t keep the conversation going, mostly because asking things in which you could easily predict the answer is useless. He is moving because his father has to move for work—his mother is a housewife. He doesn’t know what school will he enroll in once he got there. He will come to visit—he has family staying in town still. And he will at least throw a farewell barbecue party for his friends before he leaves.

“How do you feel about it?”

“Sad. I mean, I grew up here.”

He moved away the month after. You’d think it would be cinematic. You’d think I would be sending him love letter like Lara Jean, and we’d be making out on an all-green football field under the sun, at least before he leaves forever. But it didn’t happen, I said nothing, and one day we stopped seeing his face around school.

A/N: This was written as a part of my memoir-themed novella, Oxygen and Other Dreams, that remained as unfinished as I left it in 2018. As much as I could recall a lot of details accurately, I couldn't bring myself to write the following part. It was something that I never have apologised to John for—but someday, maybe I will.

John and I remained friends on social media, as Alizeh too. They married different people now, and they're very blessed to have found lifetime love. I was never someone who could fit into their narratives comfortably—a misfit—and I feel like I am still the misfit. I'm still here, and I'm still me.

Staging a fellow peep and jesting his life as a mere individual might knock those gateways of bitter or sometimes tasteless memories of yours, so I gleefully am obliged to do so.

--A teenager blinded by nothing but just the cursed torments and fights with his siblings that made his days like a bitter raw coffee after a hungover, was introduced to a concept of a friend, a fellow mate, who would make his life more miserable but would make me smile when I looked back in those glimpses of retributed affairs..

Slightly caught up now he is in his own dimension, maybe more obsessed now with his "elderly" affairs... But there's a link, as Ali from the Kite Runner said, ".... there's a kinship that not even time could break".

And yes, old friend I still remember you while my heart ache.

--Afterlife

Now I was about to enter the afterlife or more precisely, a place of subjected fools or some eloquent retards, that place of afterlife for sorrow or a new world, is coined as " College". The new world, miserable one, maybe?

This place had no soul and decieved everyone with its Daisy..

Made me long back to the tastes of "aloo ki bhujia and peeli wali daal" from mummy's kitchen..

And there is such a hustle bustle in this life that I started longing for the naggings and "chappad chappad" Of my mates from school...

"Yr woh cliche moments hi the sabse cool!"

The ones with whom I shared the basketball court and also the ones with whom "hm match haare the... ".. Everything now started getting under my skin, from cravings of those " Chaya chauraha wale momos "

To those moments.....wasted? Nah! enjoyed in the cafe trying to make "challe from hookah".

"Those memories are in my heart like a picture clicked in bokeh".

-- Some imps in the afterlife..

Imp- or a mischievous devil, is not an animated frangmet of my mind, but, indeed they are those absurd demons of life, whom I met in the afterlife.

These imps made me learn from some of the most dubious grievances of life to the those unplanned " Hostel mein scene banate hai aaj" moments.

"Kabhi gate Todd dene se lekar aapas mein behas" moments to all those "Full chicken ar half paneer" food snatching...

They are like those Rumi poetries, longing for a dangling support that I found in them.. And I have kept these in my diary along with a latching.

Amidst these shrieks of some new sounds in my heart to longing for those old ones..

Some feverish, some cold yet alose those bold ones.

I shout the fevicol ke add wala slogan

"Yeh fevicol ka mazboot jod hai totega nahi"

For I know these bonds will thrive until I am also a Logan...

Of my own journey,

These moments has crossed my mind and heart like a bitter yet longing memory down this lane.. Down my lane!

From those "after tution expenses" to contributing now only to hear, "kisne back maara? "..

And everyone would pass out in each other's rooms as a hippie on a vacation.

Irony , right? But these are all from my fate's temptation.

Tempted to live in this one afterlife until I meet another..

To keep listening to those old " Gulzars" to these new throbbing sensations

And to adjust and still crave for more of those didi ke khaane mein peculiar creations.

Neither my diary is complete nor is my fate deserted..

For I know there are much more bonds to make with this fevicol of life to keep a bit of wonted easiness asserted.

Three Democratic Presidential candidates we hope take home the presidential title for 2020

The race is on for the 2020 presidency seat and there are way too many democratic nominees to keep up with. We have rounded up our top three candidates favorite candidates for the role.

It’s a new age and it’s time for new change. It’s time to do away with the traditional presidential candidates, you know the one’s that are basically puppets, the one’s that don’t really push for real change but instead rather keep traditional boring democratic values, candidates such as Joe Biden. It’s time for candidates that will actually push for things that matter to everday working class americans, candates that want to help those that are working a 9 to 5 to have a better life, candidates that want to also move forward with legalizing marijuana.

Elizabeth Warren

Candidate Elizabeth warren is definitely one hopeful that we want to win the presidential candidacy. Warren served many years as a lwa professor and in 2012 became senator for the state of Massachusets. If Warren wins the 2020 election she will become the FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Issues

Taxes - Warren vows to increase the tax rate on billionaires. Billionaires hardly pay enough in taxes, Warren created a billionaire tax calculator that shows how much billionaires will pay in taxes and to sum it up, it’s not that much and the billionaires are livid. Billionaire Bill Gates has $106 Billion dollars and with Warrens tax plan he’ll be paying $6.3 Billion in taxes, and to us that seems pretty fair, but Bill Gates seems to think that it’s insane. Imagine the infastructure, the education, the health benefits and more that we can provide to low income families and persons with Warren’s billionaire tax rate.

Marijuana Legalization - Warren is all for it, but it wasn’t until her recent run for presidency that she went for it. At first Warren only wanted to Legalize medical Marijuana that is up until her run for presidency, so we are a little unsure if she’s either saying this truthfully or for votes, but either way she’s still a great candidate for the seat

Ending the influence of money in government - Believe it or not, our govenrment isn’t as fair as it may seem, money plays a big part in who gets to choose what for the citizens of this country. There are politicians that will accept bribary for government favors such as passing laws, bills, and policies. Warren plans to end the greed of the government.

other issues include, lowering rent in the country by %10, student debt cancellation, providing grants to black entrepreneurs and other entrepreneurs of color, raising minimum wage to $15 an hour and more.

BERNIE SANDERS

Senator Bernie Sanders is no stranger to this race, Sanders ran against Hillary Clinton in the last Democratic Primaries but the DNC decided that Clinton was the best choice, which was strange due to the fact that Sanders polls were higher than Trump’s and Hillary’s, and Hillary’s was lower than Trumps. Sanders who is former Senator for the state of Vermont is throwin his hat in the ring once again. Sanders is also no stranger fighting for the lives of African Americans in this country, marching alongside African American Icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and also getting arrested protesting alongside other Civil Rights protesters.

ISSUES

Marijuana - Sanders has a long history of standing alongside the issue of decriminalizing Marijuna as well as pardoning indivduals incarcerted for crimes involving the natural herb.

Medicare - Sanders wants to implement Medicare for all, a single payer healthcare plan in which the United States government pays for the helth needs of it’s citizens. People claim that this doesn’t work, but there is evidence that it does, just look at Switzerland and a host of other countries where it works. No wonder Tina Turner moved to Switzerland.

Free College - It’s just as simple as that no tution. The federal government would give states and tribes at least $48 billion per year, through a two-to-one federal dollar match program, if states commit to eliminating tuitions and fees at public universities and colleges.

Housing For All - End homelessnes and make rent affordable by making Section 8 vouchers available to all eligible families without a waitlist and strengthening the Fair Housing Act.Combat gentrification, exclusionary zoning, segregation, and speculation.

ANDREW YANG

New York born candidate Andrew Yang is throwing his hat into the race and with some ideas so great that many may seem to think it’s unbelievable, but in this life anything is possible.

Issues

Universal Based Income - Yang wants to create a policy were every American above the age of 18 recieves a $1,000 a month check from the U.S. Government, which he calls The Freedom Dividen. Imagine how many people this would help in this government. Many of the U.S. citizens are overworked and underpaid and barely make enough money to stay afloat. Most make only enough money to pay their bills and not enough for things they actually need such as food, or ways to get around and many other factors. This would also help Americans who strive to create thier own businesses. Many of us get stuck in 9 to 5 jobs and can barely make enough to create something of our own so that we to may enjoy life and live happily or comfortably.

Human Centerd Campitalism - Which is basically stating that humans are more important than money and that our economy should work to fit the needs of it’s citizens instead of it’s pockets.

Criminal Justice Reform - Legalizing Marijuna, ending Mass Incarceration, Decreasing pre-trial bail are just some of the things inder Yang’s Criminal Justice Reform.
