(Seattle): Hellbent Brewing, Watershed Pub & Kitchen, Project 9 Brewing, and local community partners have come together to organize the 6th annual Seattle Beer Week event that features Hellbent Brewing’s award-winning GateCity IPA. GateCity, a combination of the two Seattle neighborhoods, Northgate and Lake City, celebrates the North Seattle community by raising funds for North Helpline, a food access and homelessness prevention nonprofit that’s been serving our community for over 30 years. 

What: For the owners of Hellbent Brewing Company, community means more than just those that visit their brewery taproom. It is also their impact on the neighborhood they call home. That is why each year, they support Noth Helpline with the Gate City Project. 

Gate City IPA: 

Gate City is brewed with Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops from the Yakima Valley. At first glance, GateCity IPA recalls gentle bready overtones before transitioning into notes of mango, papaya, citrus, and pine. With words like that, it's easy to see why this beer won gold at Washington Beer Awards in 2018. (https://bit.ly/3Bjhm33) 

When: Join North Helpline and community partners for five community pop-ups held during Seattle Beer Week! May 19th through 26th, 2023.

May 25th, Thru, 6-9pm – Project 9 Brewing Celebration (21+) 

May 26th, Fri, 5-8pm – Growler Guys Closing Ceremony (21+)

Locations in Lake City and Bitter Lake

Who: Everyone is invited to attend, support local businesses, and raise funds for a local nonprofit. Please be sure to check with local bars in your area if they are interested in having Gate City on tap! Also, please check the age requirements of each venue before attending. 

Why: Rampant inflation, supply chain issues, and the ending of COVID-era funding for programs like SNAP are putting increasing pressure on our Seattle community. North Helpline serves the local community through two food banks, a home grocery delivery program, and direct financial assistance for rent and utilities. 

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were cut in March 2023, affecting over 500,000 households in Washington who will lose a total of about $95 million a month in food assistance. It is essential that we support local organizations like North Helpline that are working to address this “Hunger Cliff.”

The protagonist clutched onto the villain with everything they had. Already they could feel the cold and fear sapping their strength, but they kept their arms tight around Villain's shoulders and their face buried in Villain's neck. So they wouldn't have to look down.

"Aw, this is sweet," Villain hummed, shifting their grip around Protagonist's waist and legs to something a bit more comfortable. A proper bridal carry. "Does [Hero] bring you up here? Do you cling to him like this?"

"Please," the protagonist moaned. "I swear, I don't work for [Hero]."

"I wish I could believe that, [Protagonist]," said Villain, with infuriating calm. But why wouldn't they be calm? They were floating a hundred feet over the choppy waters of the bay and Villain was the one who could fly. "But your latest little hacking exploit left a trail straight back to you. And now you're going to tell me everything about him."

The protagonist was shaking now, as much from the wind chill factor as from the terror. The villain's suit was made of some slick, rubbery substance that was impossible to get a good grip on. It was probably insulated. Something the protagonist's t-shirt and shorts were definitely not. 

"Please, I'm just a coder with the city -"

The villain tilted them midair and the protagonist yelped. "- okay and maybe I freelance sometimes! But just light corporate stuff. I don't work for capes. I never work for capes!"

"Oh? Why not?" Villain asked innocently.

"This is why not!" Protagonist screamed. "I can't tell you anything about [Hero] because I've never met him in my life! Please, put me back in my apartment."

The villain tsked their tongue. "You're no fun. You're supposed to say 'Please, put me down,' so I can say if 'If you wish,' and then do this -" 

The villain abruptly dropped ten feet. The protagonist screamed.

"Wow, you really don't like heights," Villain observed, as the protagonist flailed wildly. They'd shifted to a one-arm grip around the protagonist's waist. With their free hand they pressed two gloved fingers gently to the protagonist's neck. "Typically this is where I dangle you upside down, but I think you might actually die of fright on me if I do that. Your heart's going like a jackhammer."

The protagonist sobbed, "Please. I'm telling you the truth. I'd tell you anything!"

The villain frowned, spun them in a slow rotation as they scanned the skies. "Where is [Hero]?" they muttered. "You've screamed loud enough, I've given him enough time..." Their gaze flicked back down to the protagonist. Their grip tightened. "Tell me about NGAF LLC."

"Yes! That was me!" the protagonist gasped, pathetically grateful to be asked something they actually could answer. "NGAF. Shell company, run out of the Caymans. I ran it down for an anon client. Four attorneys, six countries, five sets of paperwork, but it tracks back to VF-Fund, a venture capital outfit controlled by GateCity, run by some shady fintech investor out of..."

Abruptly the protagonist cut off, staring into the Villain's masked face. The villain looked back, with something that almost seemed like sympathy.

"Oh no," the protagonist breathed. "Oh no..."

"Oh yes," the villain said, floating them down.

There was a bump and a crunch as the Villain's boots hit ground. The protagonist crumpled down to the cement. They were on the roof of the old abandoned prison island, empty of tourists at this hour of the night. It was still freezing and still dangerous, but the protagonist flattened themselves gratefully to the ground.

"Not a friend," the villain said, staring down at the protagonist where they shivered uncontrollably. "Not an ally. Just a pawn [Hero's] left for me to eliminate."

The protagonist closed their eyes. On the ground they could think again, all the facts coming together in a pattern that inevitably led them here. To their death. "Please," they said softly. "Just do it quick."

To their surprise, Villain knelt down at their side. Pulled them in and swept their cape around them both. "Now why would I want to kill you?" they said, pushing their mask up to reveal a face the protagonist had only seen on their computer screen. "A whole city full of hackers, and here I've got the only one who's ever managed to crack my identity." They gestured out at the sky. "I think we're clear on the consequences of crossing me. And I believe we have a shared target."

The protagonist stared up at them. The cape was insulated - they could feel their body temperature rising, the shivering coming back under control, even as something cold and icy seemed to lodge in their chest. "You want me to find [Hero]?"

The villain shrugged. "He lied to you. He set you up and he left you for dead," they said. "Are you going to stand for that or do you want to bring him to justice?"

The protagonist looked out over the black water and clenched their fists. "Let's take the son of a bitch down."

Brian heard about the kerfuffle on the door and came to see for himself. He arrived just in time to see two powerful bouncers working one boy over with their truncheons. Brian couldn't stand this. He grabbed one of the bouncers and squealed in his high-pitched voice, 'Stop it, you rotten beasts. Stop that this instant. Leave that poor boy alone, you rotters.' He sounded just like one of those little sneaks in Tom Brown's Schooldays. The bouncers couldn't believe their cauliflower ears. Here was one of the bosses sticking up for the enemy. What Brian did not know was that only a second earlier one of the 'poor boys' had knocked out a bouncer with a brick. The bouncer was so severely injured he was rushed to hospital. So Brian's intervention of behalf of the juvenile guerrillas was not appreciated. One of the bouncers left off bashing the kid long enough to grab Brian, punch him and shout, 'Piss off, you fucking old fruit.' Brian, not badly hurt by the blow, turned tail and fled back to the ballroom, whereupon the bouncer resumed helping his mate to beat the living daylights out of the youthful would-be gate-crasher. Who by this time was offering no arguments. Happy days.
