Peanut Butter - Official Short Film * Gauahar Khan and Dhiraj Totlani

In this day and age of movies, books, web-series and so forth, there comes along something that makes you smile and which simultaneously becomes a delicious plate of food for thought. 

Peanut Butter, happens to be one such short film. To give a quick synopsis of the content: ‘Peanut Butter is a brief peak into the life of a single woman named Priya Mathur, who discovers that she is with child. Unable to fathom this life changing event, she decides to get rid of her unborn child in order to live with peace and self respect in our conservative, mocking and pretentious society. Just as she is about to take the first step which will change her life forever, fate happens to ring her doorbell. Her unborn child, stands in front of her. What follows next is a short preview of the relationship that she would share with her son, should she choose to keep her child.’

We’ve all read stories, newspaper articles, books or hell, even watched movies made on social causes which attempt to give out a positive message with a slightly different outlook. However, Peanut Butter is one such film which brings the issue of societal pressures on single mothers with a rather unique twist. Shared from the point of view of the unborn child, we realize how peer pressure and conservative norms can often jeopardize happiness in our lives. In a country where even talking about sex is taboo, getting pregnant out of wedlock is a strong reason to taint the character of a woman. 

No matter how good her family background is, how educated she might be, or how successful she is in her career, being a single mother spares no one. Getting pregnant out of wedlock then becomes accepted grounds to treat the woman with vulgarity, profanity and more than often, physical abuse. Her child isn’t spared either. Labeled as a bastard child, the lives of the mother and her son/daughter become a living hell. 

What we don’t quite realize is that, a mother is still a mother. Married or not. The feelings towards her child, her zeal to make a life for them isn’t diminished just because there isn’t a male in the scenario. Why is it, that it is always a woman that is blamed if she gets pregnant out of wedlock? Doesn’t the man play an equal, if not bigger role in order to end up in this situation? So why are women dipped in this gravy which is assumed to be dirty, stained, filthy and something with no morals? The so called rules and regulations of our society are as hypocritical as humanly possible.

However, after watching Peanut Butter, one does realize that life doesn’t have to be all that rough. The upbringing of a child and I think personally your own strength as an individual is what defines what you go through in life. Times are hard. No doubt about that. But if you become a pillar of dependence, strength and happiness for yourself and your child, no one in this world, can shake up yours. You may start the journey of parenthood alone, but once your child has grown up, you’d most likely find a confidant, a best friend in her/him. 

So, after watching this short film, I couldn’t help but smile and think. Which I’m sure thousands of other individuals did as well. Life, is truly what we make of it. Right or wrong. Hard or easy. It’s all on us. No one has the power to take away, what we aren’t willing to give. Stay strong. Stay you...
