The Accountant ² (dir. Gavin O'Connor) x SXSW 2025.

Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal return as estranged hitmen brothers (the former being autistic) in a more out-and-out comedic action throwback sequel. There's actually far less "accounting" this time around, with less of a focus on deconstructing complex financial criminal conspiracies. In exchange, its brotherly buddy pairing grounds the otherwise tidy human trafficking case. It's hard to recall another sequel that leaned directly into the comedic aspect so directly after the first film found unintentional humour from its straightly-played serious subject matter. Affleck and Bernthal's surprisingly wholesome chemistry warranted this shift as brothers with traumatic pasts who never learned to be around each other as adult, bonding (over violence) for the first time.

Premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (Austin, Texas) as part of the Headliner section.

Do you ever wonder what happened to [Ben] Affleck’s character, Chuckie, from Good Will Hunting after all his friends grew up and moved away? He probably turned out a lot like Jack Cunningham, a washed-up athlete and construction worker who drinks himself to sleep each night. Jack can’t even muster the effort to hide his addiction as he suppresses past trauma and pain.

The Accountant and Warrior director Gavin O’Connor is in talks to direct the action-thriller Fast for Warner Bros. The script comes from Sicario and Hell or High Water screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, who was previously in negotiations to direct. However, Variety reports that a deal couldn’t be reached and the studio started looking at other directors. Fast follows a former special forces commando who is recruited by the DEA to lead a black ops strike team that targets drug dealers who are protected by the CIA.
