Someone asked privately: are you seeing a therapist?

I am in fact seeing a therapist. I firmly believe in therapy and think it has been wonderful uses and positive impacts upon myself and my life.

I spent a great deal of time finding the right therapist, because not every therapist is right for me. I have a Spiritual belief system that’s off the beaten track. Several quirky degrees. Childhood trauma. And a “partner” who is a drunk.

I have a mother who was is an alcoholic. And during a certain period of my early life a drug addict. I have a very rough childhood. I have been raped once. I have been drugged three times at parties, and clubs. But I also have a therapist, I keep a journal, and I try to be mindful of my triggers.

I’m not on medication. Although if necessary I do have a medication that can help me in a panic situation. I have not used the medication since March. In fact my prescription often goes bad, so when I refill it it’s usually because it’s old.

It’s nice to have some thing just in case.

I do meditate. I have since I was a teenager. Definitely not as successful as I do now, then when I did as a teenager, but I have a long and regular history of at least meditating once a week. In my adult life, I meditate once a day.

I make us of a combination of mindfulness techniques, guided visualization’s, breath work, and specific manual manipulation for PTSD and anxiety. Generally that was given to veterans, are as effective for us, self comfort holds and soft belly breathing are awesome.

When I’m triggered, as I was last night severely, I go off the deep end in my mind. Because of therapy understand that I do this because that was the only safe place to go when I was young. So I’m very imaginative, and try not to judge myself when I go there, rather I choose to listen to the thoughts that are being said, and not act on them or react to them, but include them in my practice.

All of this only helps me on the day-to-day, and the critical situations. I believe as studies have suggested that it also is healthy for me overall. It does not change the situation. And that’s a problem, and I think anyone in a toxic relationship knows this.

Positivism, positive psychology, even to certain degrees, magical practices, all of these mindfulness techniques may make us feel stable, and better, but they don’t change the people who are causing the problem. They won’t.

The reality is that the situation I am experiencing will only change and look/feel a lot different if I wasn’t in it. So the solutions I am engaging in for self-care is wonderful, but the actual solution is income and the money and the ability to be financially stable enough to get out on my own.

I do all the things, except trying to communicate with him, because he’s an alcoholic, and no matter what I say or do he will always twist it to ignore the real problem, and make me the problem, and so I don’t do that. And when I do I regret it, as I did last night.

The bottom line is I think there is nothing more precious than my own sanity and my health and well-being and whatever I think I want to be doing or where I’d like to be, I think everything needs to be but aside and my focus should be on the safe escape under any circumstances.
