What were other candidates for George V to marry, if he hadnt married Mary?

Not really.

The ideal for George was a Protestant princess. Queen Victoria also had the dream of setting up all her grandchildren, so if you if go by her journals and letters, he was linked with almost all of his first cousins in his age range.

While George was stationed in Malta, while in the Navy, he grew close to his Uncle Alfred' family, whom he stayed with often and was made to feel apart of their family. Uncle Alfred had two daughters, that were around 10 years younger than George, but since he had waited longer to get married, were eligible to be his bride. George preferred the sunny older sister, Marie.

Queen Victoria became very set on George and Marie "Missy" marrying, so for a period (1888-1892), that was the expectation and George did not have any other serious suitors.

Of course, as everyone probably knows, George and Marie relationship fell flat before it even really stared since Marie refused Georgie's proposal, to the shock of the family. This resulted in a slight frenzy, since there wasn't many Protestant princesses eligible for George at the time.

Helena, one of Queen Victoria's daughters, wanted her daughter, Thora, to marry George. This went no where, since Thora's father was a prince from a part of Germany that Queen Alexandra detested, and Thora was not very attractive.

After Marie's refusal, Queen Victoria went back to her original plan for Queen, which was Mary. Edward VII and Queen Alexandra originally thought the idea of Mary marrying George was insensitive. George was originally not keen on marrying his dead brother's fiancé, but I think later grew to understand his grandmother's point of view that he needed to get married and Mary was an ideal kind of woman.

On a side note, it is interesting when George left Greece to propose to Mary, Queen Alexandra writes to George in shock asking what changed hinting that George was, in her mind, not going to propose to Mary. This shows the inner strife of Alexandra and her husband, Edward VII, not wanting the marriage, while Queen Victoria encouraging it adamantly, while George was in middle not knowing what to do and hiding his emotions. Many believe Queen Olga of Greece is who assured George on Mary as a wife, since she had spent time with her while her family were living in Italy.

George did have crushes, Julie Stoner and GD Xenia, throughout all of this. I wouldn't call Julie or Xenia, his suitors though since those relationships were going no where, since both girls couldn't marry George for religious reasons.

Basically, Mary was kind of his only option. Luckily, it turned out to be his best option.

At the beginning of 1908, Michael began a friendship with Natalia Sergeyevna Wulfert, the wife of a fellow officer; she was previously divorced and had a young daughter by her first husband. Their relationship deepened, and by the summer of the following year, they were lovers. By that winter, Natalia was separated from her husband and living in an apartment in Moscow paid for by Michael. When the Tsar became aware of the situation, he had his brother transferred to the Chernigov Hussars at Orel, but Michael traveled from Orel to Moscow several times a month to visit Natalia. She gave birth to their son in July of 1910. (As this occurred - before - her divorce from Wulfert, the eventual divorce decree was back-dated.) The baby George - named after Michael's dead brother - was given the surname "Brasov" derived from the name of Michael's estate Brasovo, in acknowledgement of his paternity. The following year the Tsar permitted Natalia to move to Brasovo, granting her the surname "Brasova".

In September, the couple again went abroad, again followed by the Okhrana. While in Berlin, they announced that they would drive to Cannes. But, eluding the secret police, they made a diversion to Vienna, where they were secretly married in the Serbian Orthodox Church, on October 16th. A few days later, they arrived at Cannes, where they were joined by the two children. Two weeks after the wedding, Michael wrote to his mother and brother to inform them; they were, not surprisingly, horrified and angry. The Tsar was particularly upset as his son was in the midst of his most serious haemophiliac episode, and Michael had explained that it was just that dire situation that had spurred his decision to marry: his actions would remove him from the succession and, should the young Tsarevich die, he couldn't be separated from Natalia and their child. In a series of decrees between December and January 1913, Nicholas relieved Michael of his command, banished him from Russia, froze all his assets there, and seized control of his estates. Michael and Natalia - who would not be styled Grand Duchess, but called Madame or Countess Brasova - lived in French and Swiss hotels for the next six months. They were visited by sympathetic friends and relatives, including his sister Xenia. In July they met the Dowager Empress in London; according to the Grand Duchess Xenia's diary, her mother told Natalia "a few home truths". Not long after, Michael took a one-year lease on Knebworth House, a furnished and staffed estate twenty miles north of London. Michael's finances were nonetheless uncertain since he had to rely on funds released at the Tsar's command, as his brother still controlled all his estates and assets.

LCC didn't get the Greville tiara entirely wrong. The official story is that it was made by Boucheron and was inspired by a tiara GD Xenia owned. There are rumors that it was actually smuggled out of Russia during the Russian Revolution and that Boucheron got it by less than legal means. Then they took the credit for it. That's what they meant back in the day that they didn't know the provenance of the tiara.

Simpire Imperial Family tree! The Simnov Dynasty

I finally had time to finish my Imperial Family tree fully based on the real Romanov family (except for the last part that is completely fictional 😅)

The first couple in our family tree are HIM Tsar Alexander III Simnov of Simpire and his wife HIM Tsarina Maria Feodorovna Simnov of Simpire, born Princess Dagmar of Simmark and daughter of Christian IX of Simmark. 

The imperial couple had six children, Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich Simnov of Simpire; Grand Duke Alexander; Grand Duke George; Grand Duchess Xenia; Grand Duke Michael; Grand Duchess Olga.

With the death of Tsar Alexander III his first son became Tsar Nicholas II Alexandrovich Simnov of Simpire. HIM married HIM Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Simnov of Simpire, born Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine and granddaughter of HM Queen Victoria of United Simgdom.

The new imperial Couple had five children Grand Duchess Olga; Grand Duchess Tatiana; Grand Duchess Maria; Grand Duchess Anastasia and the Tsesarevich Alexei, Heir to the trone. Unfortunately the future Tsar suffered from hemophilia, a secret that TIM kept from everyone except from a person that history would remember as The Mad Monk, Grigori Rasputin.

The future of the Imperial Family and the Imperial Regime would change forever... Revolution stroke in the Simpire leading to the Tsar abdication. The end of the Imperial regime and of the once rich and powerful Imperial House of Simnov!!!

The fate of the former Imperial Family would forever change, first the family was Imprisoned and late executed by the new regime!!!

(now my part-fictional part starts)

The line of succession of the Simpire throne would continue through the living male member of the family, since the second and third sons of Tsar Alexander III died very young (the second in infancy and the third with 26 years old), and after Nicholas II and his son abdication in favor of His brother, the Crown passed to their forth son, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich Simnov of Simpire. The GD married Countess Natalia Brasova (in secret and without the Tsar Permission), and was proclaimed Tsar but, motivated by the political situation of the Simpire, fast renounced the crown. 

The fate of the GD and Countess Brasova was to become darker as well, the GD was later imprisoned and murdered wile the countess died penniless in a Parisim charity hospital.

(now my fully fictional part starts 😅)

The GD and his wife had a son, George Simnov Count Brasov that married Maria Feodorna Simnov Countess Brasov, a Simpire middle lady who he met in Parisim. Years after the Revolution  and after the remains of Tsar Nicholas II and his family were found, the Dictator that held the power in the Simpire allowed the surviving member of the former Simpire Imperial family in exile to return home.

Decades passed and with the Dictator’s health getting worse by the day a movement to restore the Imperial Regime stroke in the country and decades after the revolution a Tsar would once again sit on the Simpire Throne.

The next in line and head of the Simnov family, by his father, was George Simnov Count Brasov, Grand Duke of Simpire. The very old Count, when offered the throne, refused in favor of his young son Alexander, who was Crowned Tsar Alexander IV Simnov of Simpire.

Years after the coronation and with the need for an Heir, The new Tsar married Pincess Mary of United Simgdom, that became Tsarina Tsarina Marie Feodorovna Simnov of Simpire (our beloved Dowager Tsarina mother to the current Tsar Nicholas III of Simpire)

And finally here it is, the family tree and history of my Imperial family, I had some research to do before posting it to relate them to History as I wanted 😊 hope you liked it!! I’m currently working on the large family tree with the connections between all my royal families but there is still some research to do...

Were Misha and Xenia close at all? I'm reading some of Misha's diary and he seems to only (in his early 1915 diary) refer to her either by her full title (so including the Her Imperial Highness part) or as 'GD Kseniya Alexandrovna'

I don´t believe there was a particularly close relationship between Xenia and Misha, just perhaps the “usual” sibling relationship without any special intimacy. Xenia was actually one among her siblings without a “favourite” sibling and was closer to other relatives, in particular to her cousin Princess Maria of Greece. Misha had a very loving relationship with his younger sister Olga, since they spent a lot of time together and even shared lessons, they also had similar dispositions (though she eventually proved to be the stronger personality). Mikhail´s use of titles for Xenia in his diary might be simply a reflection on the fact that Xenia was very much her mother´s daugher and really the “Princess” in the family. But since I have not read those diaries and do not know the exact context, I can only guess.

It is known that when King George V was a sailor, he fell in love with his uncle's daughter, Princess Marie of Edinburgh (Missy), and even proposed to her. George used to say that Missy was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. Did he harbor a grudge or resentment towards Maria Alexandrovna, the Duchess of Edinburgh (Missy rejected his proposal through her mother) when she turned down his marriage proposal? And how was their relationship when they got together with Missy in the later times. As it is known, Missy had relationships with many men, and it was known by everyone that the father of some of her children was not Ferdinand. This issue became a source of many rumors in European courts. What was his comment about what a strict man like .George would call immoral? Did he, like Kaiser Wilhelm II, see Missy as a fallen woman? What did George think about this, did Missy's husband see Ferdinand as a stupid husband? what did he think about these?

I don't think there is anything that suggest he loved Missy at any point. He recovered extremely fast from the failed engagement to have been in love. He definitely had feelings for her, but their relationship was really blown out of proportion by Queen Victoria, whose comments on the subject contrast strongly to George's behavior and letters to his mother, which sometimes feature his feelings concerning Missy. Also, not sure if him calling Missy the most beautiful is true either. I've never seen that before.

I think the fact it wasn't a passionate, loving relationship played a part in Missy's refusal since she didn't desire marrying her cousin who she saw as a friend. Beyond Missy calling George her chum in her book, everything is quite unclear, which is what makes this whole situation so odd to follow. Everyone involved (Missy's and George's parents, and Q Victoria) all claimed to wanted the marriage to happen, but since it didn't happen, someone had to be lying, which many have agreed was Missy's mother, GD Marie A.

From my understanding, George first wrote GD Marie for Missy's hand, then he wrote Missy. Then Edward Vii got involved, and out of pride, demanded for George to end it. GD Marie said Missy was too young, which somewhat cooled the situation, until Missy got engaged a few months later to someone else, which proved Edward Vii suspicion that it was GD Marie's fault. I just think the whole situation got so chaotic in credit Edward Vii and his brother, who turned the whole failed engagement into a family feud. Also, by the time her engagement was announced, which would have been the ideal time for George to be very bitter, since it showed her age concern was a lie, he had moved on to another pretty and vivacious cousin, Xenia.

I think because George knew Missy well since when she was a kid, she was always family to him. Even though, I'm sure George thought Missy actions and how she dressed were odd. I posted an excerpt from a letter from George to Nicholas II a few days ago, which shows George's relaxed attitude towards Victoria Melita, who was similarly immoral and, like Missy, was once close to George. Possibly George didn't gossip in letters, which hides his true feelings from us. It's pretty easy to assume, since George was not a saint, that he did in private have more negative opinions about Missy and Ducky, since he was an adament traditionalist.

But like Empress Alexandra (I wrote my view on their relationship a few days ago), I think Missy was out of sight and out of mind for George for the most part.

the Loudon Station in Malawi as time and power allows. Bill states that

AFRICAN TOUR (Reminder). By the time you read this, Pista, HA5AO, will

once again be active as 3DA0AO from the Kingdom of eSwatini (Swaziland)

until September 30th. He will be active from the Mountain Inn Resort at

Mbabane. His plan is to start to set up antenna and station on the 16th,

and he can be expected on the air by the evening. The station set up

contains an Elecraft K3S with a KPA500 and fed into a vertical antenna.

Pista will operate on the 80-10m bands using mainly CW and FT8 on the

higher bands. Pista plans to be active on September 21st and 22nd in the

All Africa DX Contest as a Single-Op/Single-Transmitter/CW-Mode/All-

Band/High-Power entry.

After the eSwatini operation Pista, HA5AO, will arrive in Lesotho on

the 1st of October and plans to stay until October 19th. He will again

use the 7P8AO callsign. Flight and room at Molengoane Lodge is also

booked. Due to other commitments the operation from Lesotho will take

place during his free time mainly on CW and FT8 on the higher bands.

* Dayton Hamvention Signs 5-Year Contract with Greene County Expo Center –

The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) has signed a 5-year agree-

ment to keep Dayton Hamvention® at the Greene County Expo Center. The

* Room Reservations for Dayton 2020 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in down-

town Dayton. Tim, K3LR, reports: UPDATE: After the 2019 Crowne Plaza

experience I conducted a thorough review of all available facilities

in the Dayton/Xenia area including several site visits. I also met

with key stake holders and they assure me that the security issues

with the Crowne have been dealt with. Local authorities have given

assurances that there will be improvements during our stay for 2020.

The adjoining parking garage work will be completed in time for our

arrival. Therefore contester activities will stay at the Crowne for

2020.

* Three Year Directors: Hal Turley, W8HC, was elected as a three year

director to serve during the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years. Bob

Allphin, K4UEE, and Ralph Fedor, K0IR, are both three year directors

previously elected to serve during the 2018, 2019, and 2020 fiscal

AS-015. Rich, PA0RRS, will once again be active as 9M2MRS from Penang

Island, West Malaysia, between December 2nd (2019) and February

28th (2020). Activity will probably be on 40-10 meters using

CW, RTTY, PSK, FT8, FT4 and possibly SSB (he will have a micro-

phone in the luggage, but normally no SSB [possible on request]).

Rich will have a Yaesu FT450D with 100 watt into a G5RV dipole

with bents on the balcony of the house and a MFJ automatic

intellituner for all bands. QSL via his home callsign, ClubLog’s

OQRS, LoTW or eQSL.

AS-025. Andrey, R1FW, is now active as R1FW/0 from Kunashir Island

until September 18th (possibly until the 25th). Activity will

be on 40/30/20 meters using CW, SSB and FT8. QSL via his

home callsign, direct, by the Bureau or bird/bottle mail.

AS-122. Operators Tae-su/DS3EXX and Lee/DS3FGN will be active as

homecall/2 from Daecheong-do Island between October 3-9th.

Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and FT8.

AS-200. (Reminder) Operators Take/JI3DST and Masa/JR8YLY will be active

as JI3DST/5 and JR8YLY/5 from Shodo Island between September

20-25th. Activity will be on 80-6 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY

EU-138. Operators Gaby/DF9TM and Frank/DL2SWW will once again be active

as SD7M and SD7W, respectively, from Sturko Island between now

and September 19th. QSL via their home callsigns by the Bureau.

NA-057. Operators Dennis/W1UE, Radoslav/N2WQ, Ivailo/LZ5VV, Wieslaw/SP4Z

and Ian/VE3JI will be active as HQ9X from Chillax Roatan Island

during the CQWW DX RTTY Contest (September 28-29th) as a Multi-2

entry. QSL via KQ1F. Outside of the contest (between September

20th and October 7th), they will be active for any bands/modes

that they can operate on, including 60m operations (limited

to 50 watts USB). Sked requests can be sent to W1UE.

NA-220. Bo, OZ1DJJ, will be active as OX3LX from Simiutaq Island between

September 26-30th. Activity will be on various HF bands (Focus

on 160/80/60m), but limited to his spare time when not working

(He states, “Best chance is in the morning around lunch and

after dinner [local time utc+2], on the weekend also during

VP6R PITCAIRN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS. On September 8th, the following was

posted by Ralph, K0IR, on the Pitcairn Island DXpedition 2019 FaceBook

page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/580069859103416) with pictures

[edited]: “The Braveheart arrived on Pitcairn Island on schedule on Sept.

6th. After waiting out a torrential rain, all our DXpedition gear was

unloaded and taken ashore by the Pitcairn Island longboats. Generators,

fuel, antennas and masts, Flex radios, ACOM amps, the DX Engineering 160

vertical, Yagis, —– everything. It’s all there, stored safe and dry

in the engineering building. When the roads dry out, all our gear will

be moved to our operating sites and be ready for us when we arrive in

October.

This process will save us 150 to 200 man hours of installation time

and get us on the air much faster.

XW, LAOS (Update). Per DX-World.net, Simon, G6JFY/HS0ZIB/XZ2A, has announced

that he has received his new callsign XW0LP (Suffix “LP” stands for Luang

Prabang, the town in north Laos where he now live). License is good for

one year as of October 1st, and is initially valid only for 20 meter band

operations. Simon states, “On 20 meters, I will be active every day,

mostly using FT8. My rig sits right next to my work desk, so I can keep

an eye on the band and answer calls as they are received. I WON’T use

Fox + Hounds mode on FT8, just simple, single mode. I operate my FT8

software manually so that I can select which call to reply to.” QSL via

ClubLog. NO BUREAU cards.

I'm glad that there are some relatives of OTMAA that has the names of Nicholas, Maria, Tatiana, and Olga. Hope there are some with the names of Anastasia, and Alexei. Is there?

There were two other Grand Duchess Anastasias in this era, but they were both older than the daughter of Nicholas II, so they obviously weren’t named after her. One was Anastasia Mikhailovna, daughter of GD Mikhail Nikolaevich, and sister of Xenia’s husband Sandro. The other was actually another Anastasia Nikolaevna, daughter of King Nikola of Montenegro, who married first Romanov relative Prince George Maximillianovich (son of another GD Maria Nikolaevna), and after their divorce married GD Nikolai Nikolaevich. There were other Alexeis, too, but again, they were older than Alexei Nikolaevich so they weren’t name after him. There was Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, a younger brother of Alexander III and uncle of Nicholas II. There was also Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich, a brother of Anastasia Mikhailovna’s (see above).  He died at age 19 of tuberculosis, I think it was?There were more Alexeis and Anastasias earlier in the Romanovs’ history, but these were some in the later years.
