Trick-or-Treat! I have come knocking on your Tumblr door asking for a treat. You can answer with a meme, a bit of art/fic, a fic recommendation, pictures of candy, or something else! Then go to your mutual’s Tumblr door and ask them for a treat! Happy Halloween! 🎃👻 (don’t answer until October 31)
Aahh, I’m so sorry I didn’t get to this yesterday!
Anyway, how about a pic of my two youngest getting ready to trick-or-treat? 🧡

Thank you so much for the ask! 💖

Chris Hayes, one of the MSNBC hosts, recently wrote a book about what he calls "the attention economy" - basically the way social media and most other things besides are vying for our attention and crowding out space for us to be alone with our own thoughts. It sounds a bit luddite when I put it like that, but hearing him talk about it, he's clearly thought it through and has something intelligent to say about it all.
At least one of his points is we should carve out time away from our phones and other screens. Like, take a twenty minute walk and leave your phone, your MP3 player, all that at home and just Be with ourselves. Which is a really good idea, actually. Fanfic authors know how easily Tumblr can kill the muses. It's like the scrolling taps into a very different part of my brain than what I need to actually tell a story. They pull against each other, and honestly, the easy fun of the Tumblr scroll usually wins out.
But the media landscape being what it is, the conversations so quickly turn to the evils of kids and screen-time. Or how The Algorithm (TM) blasts our mental health. Or the way we're alienated from our real-life communities because Twitter (or whatever) is Right There.
My whole life, so much of the relationships I value the most play out over a screen. Growing up, I had a hard time with the family I was born into, but was close with a particular part of my extended family in Germany, and between visits my cousin and I would write just absolutely mammoth amounts of email and chat on AIM every day. The Kid is in a different city than me, and though we can and do call, chatting and texting is so much easier. And more generally, growing up I just never really connected with people in person the same way I did with geeks online. But, like, specific geeks. The same specific geeks over years, to the point I knew their kids' names and visited a few of them in real life.
There's just something about having something in common that I cared about, and also having the time to think about what I wanted to say and how to say it. Maybe that's the little neurodivergent person I've always had in me. Maybe it's being a bit anxious and not easily understood by the people in my offline life. I don't know. It's clearly not the same, but it felt Real all the same.
Don't get me wrong. The algorithm really is evil and damaging, and the push to just keep scrolling needs to be reckoned with. I manage it by using RSS rather than the Tumblr dash, which takes a lot of set-up work and limits who I can follow, but also means I'm looking at and enjoying specific posts rather than trying to keep up with whatever people are posting. It makes it easier to do it for a certain time and then step away and do something else, knowing the new posts will still be there whenever I check back. And the news is the worst! We really do need to keep ourselves informed, but also set limits so it doesn't overwhelm our whole day. When I'm good, I check into Google news once or twice a day for maybe 15 minutes, and increasingly I'm seeing it as one more water-drop in a larger bucket rather than fresh outrages every damned time. On good days.
So, yes, there are dangers that need to be managed. I worry for teens who don't yet have the skills to do that. Heck, I worry for a lot of adults I know for the same reason. I actually agree with Chris on quite a lot of what he's said in those interviews. But also, I worry about that twelve-year-old Marta, if she hadn't been able to find people she was actually comfortable with on Prodigy message boards and listservs. And I certainly wouldn't have come out so well if my parents were always monitoring what I said and did. I needed that, and I'm sure other people did, too.
I don't know the solution. God help the parents and the teens navigating this all today; it really is a much less safe world in so many ways than the one I grew up in. But I worry for the little geeklets, and hope they find a comfy corner to grow up into proper geeks. Somehow.

When she was 17, Geeklet designed an original quilt for her best friend.  She pieced the entire top, including inventing her own technique for adding the stem to the leaf blocks.  She finished the top when she was 18, the mom quilted and bound it, and the quilt got delivered to the friend’s dorm room on college Move-In Day.

My favorite part of conventions is when a gaggle of geeklets comes to our booth, mom sees this sign, and scoots the wee ones away with a horrified look on her face.

Dune Night at Peaks and Pints
Press Release
Hey Tacoma GeekMoms and GeekDads! There is plenty of summer vacation season left on the calendar, and boredom may already be settling in around your house. So what are some fun, geeky places to take your geeklets? Dune Peninsula should top your list. The 11-acre park, aptly named for the environmental-themed, sci-fi novel “Dune,” written by Tacoma native Frank Herbert, is in your backyard! Just don’t schedule your other geeky excursions during Tacoma Beer Week Aug. 11-17. Peaks and Pints will host a Dune SudsPop Wednesday, Aug. 14 starring the man who championed Dune Peninsula, sci-fi author and Metro Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, with music by hometown musician Doug Mackey, who grew up in the shadow of Dune Peninsula’s former occupant, the ASARCO smelter. Toss in Tacoma’s historical brewery, Pacific Brewing & Malting Co., and you can’t get more Tacoma than Peaks and Pints Tacoma Beer Week Dune Night.
For the past year, Peaks and Pints has hosted SudsPop nights pairing a brewer, an exclusive one-off beer brewed by the special guest brewer and a chosen artist or band in our East Wing events room. The Tacoma Beer Week Dune SudsPop will be the first time the host isn’t a brewer, although Pacific Brewing brewers will be in the house.
“The theme in ‘Dune’ of a world destroyed by environmental catastrophe drew in part from Frank Herbert’s life experiences in Tacoma, which in the 1950s was one of the nation’s most polluted cities,” said Park Board Commissioner Erik Hanberg, in a media release. “The characters in the novel have a goal to ‘terraform’ their planet back to its inhabitable origins. That’s what we’ve done here. We have terraformed a polluted wasteland into a beautiful environment for all to enjoy.”
Did Hanberg envision the Frank Herbert Trail that loops around the Peninsula when he hosted “Cocktails Through a Stillsuit: A Toast to Frank Herbert” at the former Hilltop Kitchen in 2013? Were the Dune Peninsula six slides that lead down to a marina complex part of Hanberg’s presentations to Rotary clubs in 2014? Did he have plans for Dune Peninsula’s ginormous lawn when he was named “Best Tacoman” in the Weekly Volcano’s 2014 Best of Tacoma issue? These are just a few of the many things you’ll discover while sipping Pacific craft beer Aug. 14 at Peaks and Pints.
Hanberg won’t be the only human with stories to tell during Peaks and Pints Dune SudsPop Aug. 14. Mackey, an equity actor, screenplay writer, former Weekly Volcano columnist, former Museum of Glass emcee, artist, songwriter, band member and sound engineer — including co-founder and sound engineer of the Channel 253 podcast hub with Hanberg and Marguerite Martin — has seen a thing or two. The singer/songwriter will, no doubt, sprinkle Tacoma stories between his songs.
Peaks and Pints promises not to re-create the foul smoke environment that plagued Herbert’s Tacoma neighborhood, nor allow vicious sandworms depicted in “Dune” to invade our cozy SudsPop event room. We do promise an enjoyable night of Tacoma stories, Tacoma grown music and Tacoma made beer. Cheers!
PEAKS AND PINTS TACOMA BEER WEEK DUNE NIGHT, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, Peaks and Pints, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma, $14 RSVP at our bar for first 20 people.

Here's a brief guide on the process I used, which works for me in my basic environment but probably not the ideal way todo it. I have just finished doing this for our Mac's. We have signs w the printer problems icon over the printers. :) We have signs in the labs that show the "Report Computer Problem" icon really large so they actually use it most of the time. I linked to a screenshot of what my shortcuts look like. The form indicates where to find the computer name and the results of the form go to the ticket system. How I have mine set up is with some desktop shortcuts that go straight to a web form to report problems. It seems useful for refreshing the widgets on command or with a Casper policy instead of just plugging in a refresh time in the actual GeekTool - You mentioned wanting a URL to the ticket system. The latest version of GeekTool allows you to use AppleScript to control it, which I've only just started playing with. I'm working on improving the system I use for status messages, but the computer name works well. I use GeekTool to print the computer name and any statuses messages I throw in a text file.

It occurs to me that some of you have never heard of Michael Longcor, Moonwulf of SCA fame. That’s a gap in your education that must be rectified.
Some other favorites:
Bob’s Dog Obedience and Taxidermy Shop
If I Could Be a Flying Monkey
Chain-Mail Mama
"Pillar of Hell,” “Danegeld” and “A Smuggler’s Song” (fave!) are wonderful, too, and though I’m hesitant to link since the only recordings I can find are bootlegged versions of his CD’s rather than live performances, said CD’s seem to be completely out of print these days. Youtube won’t disappoint if you’re so inclined.
