GENERAL QUESTIONS

Who are you?

I'm Kiana, I'm a queer, Japanese Jamaican woman, and a Director/Storyboard artist who works in animation. I'm currently at Disney Television Animation.

What are your pronouns?

I usually go by she/her but I don't really mind any pronouns~

Where did you go to school?

California College of the Arts (but I dropped out when I was hired at Disney)

How did you get hired at Disney?

My bosses found me on twitter. They liked my drawing style and asked if I wanted to take a storyboard test. I did, I passed, I got interviewed and moved to LA two weeks later to start storyboarding.

Your work seems familiar. What do I know you from?

I've been on the internet for a long time! It could be a number of things. As maimai97 on dA I had a comic about next gen Pokemon characters called Pokemon 25 Years Later. As kilala97 I had some popular next gen ponies and also had a Steven Universe gemsona named Larimar. I'm also @yamujiburo, known most for drawing Jessie x Delia (hanamusa) a lot. I also work professionally! I've worked as a storyboard artist and director on Disney Channel's Big City Greens, I was a storyboard artist on one of the Steven Universe anti-racism shorts and I was a storyboard artist on Pokemon: Path to the Peak. Most recently I've been on season 6 of Dropout's Game Changer!

What program and brush do you use to draw?

Default brush in Storyboard pro. Photoshop sometimes just for compositing or specific effects.

What is this project?

This is a project that started off as a silly idea that has since grown into me creating a 10 minute pilot animatic.

What does "pilot animatic" entail?

It means that it's effectively a pilot/episode 1 of a (potential) larger series. It's fully voice acted but is not fully animated. It's an animatic, meaning it will be comprised of storyboards in video form.

When and where can I watch the pilot!?

Now and right here!

What would this series be rated?

Ideally like PG13/TV14! Or whatever they call it. Definitely more geared to a YA audience. Not completely kiddy but also not what most people would consider adult animation to be

What are you planning to do with the project now that the pilot has released?

Don't know yet! There has been a lot of studio interest and even offers, so I'm in the process of talking with them and seeing if I can find this show a home or if I want to try doing it on my own or if I want to even continue with it at all. I know you guys are curious, but even if I wanted to tell you I couldn't. Just trust that I will make announcements as they come~

You said Aika had teammates, will we see them?

Because of the studio interest and potential for more of this show, there's some stuff I'm still holding close to my chest. This is one of them.

Do the characters have parents??

Zira does! As for Aika and Eclipse, this is something I'm still developing and don't really know myself haha

What are the characters' sexualities?

Don't know right now. Headcanon away!

Is "Star Guardian: Guardian of the Stars" a reference to that vine?

Nope! It's more so a parody for just really long and redundant titles which I love. Similar to the title of this project, which is called "Pretty Pretty Please I Don't Want to be a Magical Girl"

I redrew Celestite's reference since I updated what their hair looks like (it’s wispy instead of choppy (link to older one)). Also drawing their weapon completely for the first time in years. It’s a staff. It causes boom. And fireworks. Their gem is located at the back of their neck btw.

they/them. They’d probably be a flying/fairy type if they were a Pokemon.

Ohhh okay so I've written a bit about what I think happened between SUF episode 19 and the last episode and I honestly have many many ideas lol(I've been into SU for like 6 years and now I got really back into it).I think Steven has visited all 39 states he wanted and then,when Connie finished college,they moved to a town not far from beach city(maybe a 30 minutes car ride away)because although they both wanted a fresh start(expecially Steven for obvious reasons),they didn't want to move too far away.They got married and had either just one daughter or one daughter and twins(a boy and a girl).Steven is mostly a stay at home dad(even though my hc is that he runs a little music/vinyl shop since he's always had both a talent and a passion for music)while I think Connie's a doctor like her mother. Even if they don't live in the same city anymore,they visit the gems(or "magic aunts" as Steven's daughter likes to call them)very often,a couple of times a week.

ok so i didnt post for a week because all th shit i was making was like sketches and artfight preparations but these are two designs i just finished recently!!

these two designs are inspired by aspects found in elden ring, the first one being my gemsona, richterite, who is based off ranni the witch !! the second one is a character for a friends world named aeonia appleton and she takes heavy inspiration from concepts of scarlet rot and especially the scarlet aeonia incantation in the game

I had a really bad experience at the hospital last week that re-opened some deep emotional wounds.

I spent the following days binging Steven Universe from the beginning. I had legitimately not watched the show since Future ended in 2020, despite it being my favorite show for years. Maybe it was because I was so caught up in trying to watch new-to-me shows so that I could attempt to keep up with the cultural zeitgeist. Maybe all the years of online discourse over the show finally convinced me it wasn't as good as I had remembered it being. Maybe I was just upset that it was over (isn't it, isn't it). But in that moment where I needed something to ground me and distract me from the pain I was in, I knew that it would bring the comfort I sought.

At the time of writing, I just watched the movie a couple hours ago and will be watching Future in the coming days. I barely remember what happened in Future & I'm looking forward to revisiting it with the all that came before it fresh in my mind. I'm planning to also finally tackle my copy of Save the Light that I bought for my Switch 5 years ago and just never bothered playing. And I'm working on completely revamping my original gemsona from 9 years ago (Charoite - can you believe a gem containing my name ended up being a lovely mix of purples and blacks?!) and cooking up a whole backstory for how they would fit into the show's lore & how to reflect all the changes to who I am all these years later in the design.

Steven Universe was probably the most important television show to ever enter my life. I'd followed it since the day Cartoon Network released the pilot episode online in 2013. I agonized through every lengthy hiatus & excitedly ran to Tumblr when a new episode had dropped. I used to spend so much time looking for all the beautiful fan art made for it, and it had a huge influence on my own art style -- some parts of which can still be seen in how I draw now. The first conversation I ever had with my wife was her asking me about my favorite SU characters, and now 8 years later we're revisiting the show together. Stevonnie was one of my first real encounters with a non-binary character & certainly played a part in coming to term with my own non-binary identity less than a year after "Alone Together" premiered (re-watching that episode last week made me cry). I'm...quite bad with finding words sometimes, but I'm just glad that I was able to reconnect with this part of myself that I had unknowingly stifled for the past few years. Rekindling the fire of something I have such a passion for, getting excited over all the new things I'm inspired to create because of it, and getting to share it with many of the friends I've made in recent years...it's nice.
