Psychology and Gender Studies at University of Melbourne: Promoting Equality
Tumblr media
As someone passionate about LGBTQIA+ advocacy and equity, I wanted to incorporate those interests into my psychology degree. That’s why I chose the University of Melbourne’s cutting-edge program blending psychology and gender studies. Courses explored topics like power dynamics in relationships, the psychology of gender identity, and biases influencing workplace opportunity - equipping me with research-backed tools for promoting equality.
Tumblr media
Arriving in Melbourne, with its vibrant, progressive atmosphere, I felt empowered to drive change. Seminars had us directly collaborating with local organizations, from family violence shelters to LGBTQIA+ youth services, on uplifting applied projects. A truly inspiring module was working with psychologists to develop inclusive school curriculum policies informed by the latest developmental science.
Thanks to Melbourne’s amazing community partnerships, upon graduation I immediately joined a local collective running empowerment workshops challenging gender stereotypes. If you want your psychology training aligning with and enabling your social justice ambitions, I highly recommend crossing over into Melbourne’s gender studies program - an incredible Envoy Study Abroad journey made possible by Envoy Education consultants. The applied experiences I gained are already helping me pay it forward.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 13 OF 15 Thursday, March 30, 2023
"No matter what you're having, you can toast knowing that women had a part in its history. Saying that some types of alcohol are better, more noble, more masculine to drink than others is just outright silly...All drinks are girly drinks." - Mallory O'Meara, Girly Drinks: A World History of Women and Alcohol

"An analysis done in 2017 showed that three-fourths of the surveyed public believed that it was beneficial for parents to let young girls play with toys that are normally associated with boys. On the other hand, only 64% of the surveyed public believed that young boys should be encouraged to play with “girl” toys (Horowitz).
The data analysis can translate into how we perceive masculinity, and how we degrade boys more often for having female traits as opposed to girls having male traits. We rarely hear people telling a girl not to be brave (bravery being a typical “masculine” trait), but we often hear people telling boys not to be vulnerable with their feelings (vulnerability being a typical “feminine” trait). In the same way, boys are not as widely accepted to play with toys that are branded for girls.
In other words, “…traits stereotypically associated with men – such as strength, courage, and leadership – are good, whereas those tied to femininity – such as vulnerability, emotion and caring – are bad. Thus, boys receive the message that wanting to look up to girls is not okay” (“How Toys Became Gendered”).
Boys are often punished for showing the typical female traits, while more “negative male” traits, like excessive hostility, are rewarded. These traits would never be acceptable for women, but somehow, for men it is acceptable (“How Toys Became Gendered”).
This is not setting the standard that is needed for future innovations in the gender equality movement. " https://thenewnormalnj.org/the-impact-of-gendered-toys/#:~:text=Gendered%20toys%20influence%20a%20child%20from%20a%20very,help%20the%20next%20generation%20to%20be%20more%20gender-equal.

You wrote "A big part of pulling free from expectations put on women is by breaking genderstereotypes, which leads to men being able to wear dresses, makeup, heels without being mocked for it because everyone should be able to present themselves in a way that makes them comfortable & happy." OK. But that's not attractive. I'd never fuck or be in relationship with a man who's not masculine. And people like you are erasing masculinity by promoting this mindset. I need traditional, masculine men in life. Because I'm a feminine woman. Men should be happy to be men, and live in their masculine energy. Men are mocked for being men in today's messed up society. That's why we need people like Jordan Peterson and other positive influences to lead them to the right path.
If you're attracted to masculine men, I'm gonna tell something that's very important. Listen up:
GOOD FOR YOU
I genuinely do not care.
Your preference and tastes are your business and like cool man. I'm not trying to dictate your life. Your life is your life. (Obviously as long as it isn't hurting others;) You deserve the freedom to be who you like, act how you like and well do who you like ;)
...get it.... ?
Understand that everyone should be extended the deceny and humanity to be who they want to be ? (Adding this again, because I know you're just the type of person who'd jump through hoops to twist this into saying I'm excusing like mass murder or whatever: as long as it isn't hurting others)
So once again;
Understand that everyone should be extended the deceny and humanity to be who they want to be ? Even men?
If a man wants to be "traditional" then sure cool good for him. If he wants to wear a cute little dress then sure cool good for him. It's not up to anyone else to dictate that choice. Definitely not you and me.
Girl if you like 'em traditional then go find a traditional man. Surprise, Surprise they still exist. They're not some endangered species or whatever you think is happening. I'm not out here hunting them for sport. Coming and complaining to me won't help. If you can't find a traditional man then I think that speaks about some problem from your end not mine :/
Okay but I love how I said that everyone should be able to be "comfortable and happy" in their own skin and you immediately followed that by "OK. But that's not attractive." !?!?!?!??! DUDE!?😂😂😂😂😂😂
Men (and anyone really) aren't just inanimate objects whose sole purpose for existence is to be attractive to you. They deserve to be comfortable and happy even if you don't find them attractive.
That's like someone saying they have a preference for I dunno blond men or whatever? And then believing every man in the world should dye their hair blond just so they'd appeal to that person.
....do you see how unhinged that is?
...how much of a dick move that is?
Maybe that's why you seem to be having trouble finding a traditional man🤔
Sorry! Sorry! That was below the belt. But I dunno a person's chances of getting a date usually shoot up when they're not blatantly an asshole. When they're not putting their partner's sex appeal to specifically them above said partner's happiness & comfort....
Here's my question, I'm an Obey Me! blog right?
How the fuck did you get here? "Traditional" men really are an extinct species in that game😭 did you get lost? are people putting hits out on my name? sending you in here? like genuinely how did you end up here?
Also side note, because I find it really interesting; the characteristics of "traditional men" and "traditional masculinity" has a tendency to change between culture & time. It doesn't really change the flow of our conversation because that's not really the point of it, but it's something interesting to read about if you wanted
Okay well, good luck I guess ❤️✌️

CMS 294 Blog Post #2 - Dylan Latham
Using semiotic analysis, examine 4 print and/or TV advertisements for products that reinforce gendered stereotypes and write a blog entry on the various ways in which they construct and emphasize social stereotypes.
This first print advertisement for children shows a young girl holding a large baby doll on the left. The background is bright pink which represents the market the product and service aims to sell the toy for. The doll is also seen in a package and the product logo also appears in light pink. The second toll is a tool kit for young boys as pictured on the right. The background is light orange depicting colors for boys. In these advertisements, the colors are used to indicate which products are for boys and girls. Toys marketed for girls focus on nurturing and cooperation while toys for boys focus on independence and physical activity.
Tumblr media
Advertising aimed specifically for boys and girls continues to reinforce gender stereotypes at a young age which could lead to them being reinforced in the future. This next print ad depicts bright colors for the specific genders again focusing on toy cars divided on the left with a light blue background and small toy unicorns and dolls on the right with a light pink background. The Kinder Surprise products even have light colors on each capsule for the group of children they sell products to.
Tumblr media
Even the popular company, Lego has divided their advertising for boys and girls and continues to do so. In this print advertisement, we see two club magazines. One depicts Lego products for girls emphasizing friendship and strictly for girls. The other Club magazine focuses on an action theme for boys showing a white ninja attacking a serpent. The continued marketing for boys and girls became a part of the company’s culture and in our everyday lives. Although the company has begun to steer away from stereotypes, society has become accustomed to the norms the products represent.
Tumblr media
In this last print advertisement, both the male and female figures are divided by what society considers to be the general norm for parental items. A female adult on the left looks to be pregnant and has a Target cart full of items to prepare for her new baby. These items include light pink colored items representing a baby girl. The male figure on the right represents a typical adult male getting some baby items in a light blue color followed by ice cream and chips. Both sides represent different item categories. The woman represents girl power while the man represents boyish charms. These norms are often repeated in advertisements and reflect what society believes is the norm.

An everyday example of passing from one stereotype to another: a female Ph.D must be dull, boring and unsuitable for marriage, while a good-looking woman is probably superficial, empty inside, and rely on her appearance to acquire a leading role. The good news is an increasing number women are breaking these stereotypes with their stories and actions. Happy Women’s Day! 🙌
P.S. In Chinese, the expression “花瓶”(vase) is used as a derogatory term to describe women who are good-looking but unintelligent.
