Turning 25
Yesterday I turned 25, I was about to add 'for the first time' to the end of that statement but that wouldn't have made much sense.
I found it it to be quite strange and different to previous birthdays. I got equally as excited and planned just as many trips, meet-ups and dinners as usual. My birthday has always been something I've celebrated for weeks. This year though there was a shift and although it may simply be down to mine getting up at 7am or being mildly hungover I can't help but believe its deeper. In fairness a significant chunk of it I think is due to being knackered and harbouring a minor yet undoubtable hangover, I always seem to become gloomy and existential when I'm tired. Nevertheless though 25 marks a significant milestone in a persons life. I don't think this is just a societal cliche. Neither do I believe it has anything to do with being exactly a quarter of a centuary old.
For me, over the last year or so there has been a shift in the way I am living and the way I am thinking about the way I'm living. They say people are pretty well formed by the age of 25 both physically and emotionally. Most people are working, some have partners, some have moved away from their hometowns and some even have children. In my experience of it, turning 25 is a point where a person begins to consider what they value, who they value what they no longer value. It's a bit like going through your wardrobe and throwing all the clothes, shoes and clutter that you no longer want or no longer serve you. I feel like many of us when we reach this age do this unconsciously, we drift away from friends, we stop attending every social occasion, we start becoming more thoughtful about how we are spending our time and who with as we no longer have boundless time and energy.
I believe the source of this change is due to both a solidification of ones personality around this time paired with not having as much free time anymore. When I was in my early 20s I had time for everyone and everything and this was fun and I am very grateful that I did all the things I was able to do. Its like your early 20s you're licking every possible flavour of ice-cream and then when you reach 25 you've found some of your favourites and are spending more time licking them and not any time licking rum and raisin because that's grim and why should you? It's like the clothes metaphor but with ice-cream...I think. This writing melarky is all new to me.
I think this process can manifest in different ways and it is not only something you are in control of, it is something that happens to you through other peoples experience of it as well. For example you may notice someone who you were once close too becoming more distant. This is someone you've known for years and you used to spend a great deal of time together and now they're slipping away. You may start to believe this is something you've done wrong, you may feel loss, shame, guilt at this person becoming more distant. In reality they may just be experiencing this change and and perhaps you don't fit into their new life as much as you used to. It's pants when you're at the receiving end of it but it most likely isn't a conscious decision on their behalf. Every person has a finite amount of energy, time and brain space and as their life fills up with more stuff, the less capacity they are going to have for anything non-essential.
Just the other day a friend of mine said she is becoming increasingly distant from 2 of her friends from school. She said the 2 of them seem to be distancing themselves from her and it's made her feel quite excluded. On the other hand though she also believes she has changed a lot since school herself and she'd noticed that she was becoming very different from these 2 friends anyway. Sometimes it is just a natural thing, there are many people who I used to be close too who have fallen out of my life over the last few years either by conscious decision or mainly just because of logistics such as leaving uni, moving cities, changing jobs etc. It is my opinion though that the ones who ought to say do stay. As we develop as humans it is inevitable that our values, beliefs and requirements change which leads to an alteration in the network of people that we have around us. It is hard though, especially when people change at different rates, prioritise different things and have different ways of living.
In short, turning 25 was strange this year as I became quite reflective of what has changed for me over the last few years. Your birthday is a set date which makes it an easy point of comparison. Just like Christmas, it's tricky not to think of how things were the previous year and whether they are better or worse. You ask yourself what you did, who was there? How many people messaged you? It's impossible not to reflect. I think this birthday taught me not to see change as a tragedy or a loss and to accept the forever changing landscape of life as a natural progression. This isn't to say you're not allowed to mourn occasionally for that which you have left behind. But don't take it personally, new connections will be made and better things will come. Things which are more attuned to you, people that are more attuned to you. Sometimes you have just let go and accept the flow of life in order to find what's the most important.

One week until my university starts classes again (we are opening a week earlier than usual and then off after Thanksgiving). And there are less than 2 weeks until I start my long term elementary music substitute job🎉 I’m excited to get to teach a long term position and challenge myself by working with an age group I haven’t worked with much prior. I’ve really missed teaching public school so I really hope whatever plan is implemented that it will allow for the students and myself to protect our health while also getting regain some structure day to day. And this semester I’m taking a popular music education class where I’ll be studying ukulele and guitar which should help with the general music classes! 🎶 #backtoschool #musiceducator #musicteacher #generalmusic #elementarymusic #musicmajor #gradschool #university #fall2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/CECZj8LguDJ/?igshid=jaqwbm3z62t7

Orb of Knowledge
I went for a talk last night at the University of York about the use of psychedelics in psychotherapy treatment. It was really interesting albeit at times very complicated especially when the lecturer began talking about different models of therapy. She had these circuits on the board, like an electronic circuit and there were all these labels and arrows and all turned into a kind of white noise. I describe it as my brain having a sort of 'understanding information' framework and this framework is built and covered in receptors in which information of a similar and understandable nature can fit into these receptors and then can be absorbed into a giant orb of knowledge. This framework is obviously constantly in flux, moving around and morphing into different shapes with new receptors popping up all the time as I learn and understand more stuff. Blobs of information which do not have a relevant receptor in my brain orb just simply pass by and disappear into the ether. Perhaps landing in my cognitive junk folder or literally dissipating into nothingness. This is what happened when the graph popped up in this lecture, the information entered through my visual cortex and drifted through my brain hoping to latch onto a friendly receptor of understanding but no. Brain not compatible with graph. Graph blob drifts past and disappears into abyss forever. Usually a good hard dose of Wanting to figure it out can affect this, the blob can hover in the abyss while the brain orb churns away trying to jigsaw piece together any relevant and related information in order to create a receptor. I feel like its strongly affected by how much you care or want to learn something. Your brain is capable of harbouring the most complex and ginormous orb of knowledge. This rant has taken too much brain capacity and now I'm tired and need a nap. I don't know what point I am trying to make. But I don't care. Mwahahaha

Arranger Legacy | Generalmusic WX2, WX400, WX EXPANDER
