One of the things I love about George and Bertha's dynamic is that he isn't merely amused by and indulgent of her social climbing; he respects it. I wouldn't go as far as saying he thinks it's as important as his own work, but he does recognize that she's working to build their family's legacy, same as he is. He's building the business side of their legacy, and she's building the social side. They're a team.

Rewatching season 1 of Gilded Age, and Turner really was next level delulu the whole time, considering what all her conversations with George actually amounted to:
George: Where is my wife?
George: Have you seen my wife?
George: Please ask my wife to come find me.
George: I have been separated from my wife for exactly five minutes and 20 seconds, and it is making me bleed internally. Fix it, Turner. Fix it.

if your husband cannot use his robber baron powers to get you what you want why even bother getting married to him in the first place?

Turner was after George from the very beginning. In the first episode, George finds her hanging around outside his office, and even Watson warns her to tread carefully.
A lesser man would have become fallen prey to her antics. It's a good thing George Russell only has eyes for his wife.

He knew it was beyond inappropriate. He knew it had no place in the current discussion they were having. He knew most people would judge him for it.
And yet.
***
Post-s2. George confronts Bertha. The results are highly (un)expected.
(Exploring Bertha's stubbornness, George's latent jealousy and extremely unique conflict resolution methods)

I watched the season one finale last night and it was amazing as I thought it would be ✨ George and Bertha are still my favourite couple to ever exist, Agnes van Rhijn is an icon, Ada is just the sweetest human being and I need Peggy to find her little boy. I can’t wait to start watching season 2 even though I already know about some things that happen and I am not looking forward to it 🤡
