i can’t stop thinking about how gerard is so different from the usual format of murph’s characters. murph’s characters usually follow the line of “old grizzled knights” who don’t want to do the things they do, but they have to, because it’s so ingrained in who they are, because they must follow their duty, no matter what. look at riz and kugrash and theo and even cody, all following along, grasping for that sense of duty and code and following their rules to do what needs to be done. gerard is like the opposite. he did his duty, he followed the rules, he was supposed to get his happy ending so where the fuck is it? even then, his duty wasn’t one like riz or kug’s; it was just what was expected of him so he could be human again. and when he becomes human again, his duty is over, and there’s not looking for another goal like riz, there’s no becoming a martyr like kug, and there’s no continuing adventuring like barry. there’s just the promise of a happily ever after, and yet there isn’t. in fact, elody is more like murph’s characters, succumbing to that duty and fighting for duty. gerard runs away with the children. gerard just wants to be human again. gerard runs away from his problems, from accepting his faults. the one time gerard starts to run towards that sense of duty, pulling that shard from the body of the fairy who cursed him, he dies and regrets it. he’s not an old grizzled knight. he’s just a prince trying to find happily ever after.
