Ismihan Sultan (1545 - 8.8.1585), also called Esmehan or Esma, was one of the daughters of Selim II and his favourite consort, later wife, Nurbanu Sultan. Born in Manisa during her father's princely governorship there, she only moved to Istanbul at the age of 17 when her grandfather Süleyman I married her to the 56-year-old vizier Sokollu Mehmed Paşa for his starring role in securing Selim's victory against Şehzâde Bayezid. With him she had four children, two of which reached adulthood: Sultânzâde Sokollu Ahmed Bey (1563? – 1566/67), Sultânzâde Pîr-Mehmed Bey (1566? – 1567?), Sultânzâde Sokolluzâde İbrâhîm Hân/Paşa (1565 – 1622?) and Safiyye Hanım-Sultân (1562?-?), who later married Sokolluzâde Câ’fer Paşa (son of Grand Vizier Lala Mustafa Paşa, who was her father's cousin).

As the daughter of the Sultan and wife of the Grand Vizier, she was the second wealthiest woman in the empire after her aunt Mihrimah Sultan. Though described as short and not particularly good-looking, Ismihan was noted for her intelligence and passion. Stephan Gerlach said she was a "cheerful lady who know how to entertain the people around her". Indeed, the princess sponsored a dramatic representation at her nephew Şehzâde Mehmed's circumcision fest, in which a child threatened by a hired assassin was saved by a young girl dressed like a nymph or an Amazon.

Ismihan's influence grew during the reign of her younger brother Murad III. Together with her mother Nurbanu and aunt Mihrimah, she interceded on behalf of two Turkish women who had been captured at sea by the French. In the early 1580s, she succeeded in arousing her brother's interest for other women other than his haseki Safiye by presenting him with two beautiful slave women skilled at dance and musical performance.

Sokollu Mehmed Paşa was assassinated on 12 October 1579 by an angry petitioner, leaving Ismihan a widow of 34. The princess, impatient to remarry, had in mind a specific candidate: the young and handsome Özdemiroğlu Osman Paşa who, unfortunately, was not interested and turned down the marriage. She subsequently married Dâmâd Kalaylıkoz ‘Alî Paşa, governor of Buda, in 1584, but the marriage was short-lived because Ismihan died only a year later, on 8 August 1585, three days after giving birth to a son, Sultânzâde Mahmûd Bey, who would die too in late September of the same year.

Ismihan Sultan was laid to rest in the mausoleum in Hagia Sophia of her father Selim II, while her children - including Sultânzâde Mahmûd Bey - were buried in the mausoleum of her first husband, Sokollu Mehmed Paşa.

“Experimental work [has] revealed that specific facial features, such as a smiling mouth or wider eyes, are consistently recognised as cues of trustworthiness across individuals and cultures,” the authors write.

“In this paper, we capitalise on this large empirical literature to build an algorithm that estimates trustworthiness based on a pre-identified set of facial characteristics.”

That algorithm was first tested using photographs of faces where trustworthiness had been rated by humans. The researchers also checked that it was susceptible to the same biases as humans; that is, tending to rate younger, feminine and happy faces as more trustworthy.

When it was then used to analyse 1962 English portraits painted between 1506 and 2016 and held by the National Portrait Gallery, London, Baumard and colleagues found a significant increase in trustworthiness displays over time.

They were able to replicate their findings with 4106 portraits from 1360-1918 – including works from 19 western European countries – featured in the online Web Gallery of Art.

To test the assumption that trustworthiness in portraits does reflect actual changes in social trust, rather than just how people pose for portraits, the algorithm was applied to 2277 selfies from six cities on social media.

Increased displays of trustworthiness were observed, the researchers say, in images from cities where interpersonal trust and cooperation had been assessed as being higher in the European and World Value surveys.

They note that the historical increase in trustworthiness observed in their datasets parallels the rise of liberal values such as religious tolerance, political freedom and democracy. But more significant, they suggest, is that it is linked to increases in living standards.

“We found that changes in GDP per capita predicted future changes in trustworthiness displays in the National Portraits Gallery two decades later, while changes in political institutions did not,” they write.

And, they add, this “is consistent with other works emphasising the importance of economic growth and psychological changes in history”.
