Happy late Halloween!!

My gift to you all is a little Collector redesign I made :3 this design wasn’t created to be “better” than the current collector, just to be my own silly spin on it. I am a sucker for sharp shapes

Originally the colors were more cool but after messing with warmer colors I decided I like them better. That won’t stop me from using cooler palettes in the future though!!

the same phase? what do you mean by that?

(Full answer under the cut because this is long.)

The Charmer: Oh, you just had to mention that, did you? You know he'll bring it up anyways, he always does.

The Coordinator: Our faces represent different phases of the moon. In our society, to some people, but not all, certain phases are considered more desirable because they believe Collectors with those phases are collectively similar, with certain shared traits. Curator has a waxing crescent, the earliest phase, which means these people would perceive her to be immature and inexperienced, rude, and impatient. Cartographer has a waxing gibbous, the third phase, this is interpreted as being incomplete and listless, still not mature, and generally dealing with melancholy. I am the last quarter which is considered a disappointment and falling short of true greatness, not as wise and patient, falling short of expectations.

The Charmer: Yes. The most admired phases are the waning crescent and the full moon. Full moons and new moons are both very rare. New moons are the least desired phase because it's interpreted to mean being dull, dim, overshadowed, and blending in, never standing out. Full moons are considered a light in the dark, balanced, bright, cheerful. Waning crescents are desired as they are the oldest phase you can be, signaling wisdom, patience, grace, and other dumb shit like that.

The Curator: These ideals and theories are considered outdated, it's similar to how I mentioned, a long while ago, that some Collectors believe certain positions in the Grand Constellation are superior places to perform the Nova Spell. To get children with better traits or temperaments. This phase belief is related. There are theories that certain spots will guarantee a child with the preferred phase. None of us think any of that is real. It's sort of similar to how some societies believe which constellations are visible in the sky during your birth will influence who you are as a person.

The Cartographer: We think it's a bunch of nonsense. You could meet 100 people born at the same time as you and none of you will be the same. It has more to do with your genetics, and most crucially, your environment as you become an adult. 

The Coordinator: Like clay, where you come from determines what you look like, and as you age you are molded and refined. This is an imperfect metaphor because you will continue to change your whole life, unlike clay which can be fired into a permanent unchanging shape. But still, there are no other forces at play making you who you are.

Glyphs and Covens

It’s always struck me as a bit strange that there are 4 glyphs but 9 covens, especially that NINE covens bit (10 if you count the EC as a “main” coven, but its just all of them together). And it struck me that that’s probably the point for Watsonian and Doylist reasons that, shockingly, overlap.

The 9 covens are there to obscure the 4 glyphs. The show-writers wanted to leave us wondering about the glyphs until they dropped the reveal that we’d ALREADY seen all the basic glyphs (and then start us thinking about combos); this is the Doylist explanation. The Watsonian explanation is that Belos/Philip was trying, while forcing witches into covens, to ALSO make them forget about the fundamentals of magic as they actually were, seeing only the fundamentals HE wanted to enforce. The fact that 4 and 9 are not closely related numbers helps with that.

It does irks me that there is such a close connection between the coven system and the draining spell, which was given to Philip by the Collector; the Collector has MOON THEMING, and there are EIGHT moon phases (new, waxing crescent, waxing quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, waning quarter, waning crescent). So 8 covens would have made a lot of sense; 10 would also have made sense (humans love groups of (multiples of) ten, since we have 10 fingers (and toes). But no, its nine; its UNNATURAL.

But the glyphs exist. The glyph combos are built out of the 4 glyphs, so theoretically, there is a glyph combo version of ALL magic (which can be as simple as the two glyph mist spell used in “Hunting Palismen” or as complicated as the teleportation spell in “Elsewhere and Elsewhen”)

So what are the general connections between glyphs and covens?

Light: The light glyph has to do with light, and invisibility works probably in the way we expect—by bending light around an object—so Illusion magic is probably pretty heavy on the light glyphs. Oracle magic—SEEING into the future—is likely light based as well. The, given that the weird “Beastvision” think Eberwolf does is Beastkeeping, there may be a connection there (at least to that spell, but I could see and animal-light connection). And maybe Healing, there are health benefits to sunlight exposure.

Ice: Ice isn’t just Ice; I mean, it IS ice, but it’s probably all crystals, lattices, and matrices. So the stoneshaping of Construction magic is probably Ice based. I could also see Potions (the combining of ingredients into a more complex whole mimicking crystal formation in real life, also water), Abominations (for much the same reason as potions), Oracle (the connections between events, the underlying STRUCTURE of time, as we overheard in “The First Day”), and Healing (the structure of the body, the proper connections between all the parts).

Plant: Plant is obviously Plant; given what most people think of when they hear Potions, it may also be part of that magic. If it more broadly represents “Life”, it may connect to Beastkeeping and maybe Oracle; more distantly, I feel plant might be part of Abominations (the ‘life force’ that makes Abominations different from Potions)

Fire: Fire is energy; these glyphs are probably pretty widespread, but I’m not sure they’d be CENTRAL in any of the coven magics. Except maybe Bard; Bard magic has to do with sound and air manipulation; the vibration of molecules is heat, so Fire. Its also the other ‘motive force’ option for Beastkeeping (firebees?) and Abominations (hinted at by Amity learning a Fire spell?). It may also be connected to the melding of ingredients in Potions.

In addition, Potions and Bard Magic are weird. Potions are mixed up, and don't require the active use of a Witch's bile (since Eda and Lilith can still make them). And Bard Magic (like Staff magic) doesn't use Spell circles, instead being cast through sound.

Transiting Sun enters Cancer

June 21 - July 22, 2018

Cancer: my need to give and receive emotional warmth and security (Bloch and George, Astrology for Yourself)

Steven Forrest: “The ego itself confronts the world - or vice versa.”

This transit of the Sun through Cancer features strong challenges at the beginning and the end, with blessings in the middle. It’s up to us to look for legitimate areas in need of improvement, as pointed out by the Sun’s light; and to take advantage of water-sign trines from Jupiter and Neptune for healing. As the US (where I live) is a Cancer nation, it’s easy to see the particular flaws this sign is prone to.

The stereotypical American is more comfortable where he is, snugly ensconced in his cozy shell, which he doesn’t want to share - there’s just enough room for him only. Inside this shell it’s easy to sort of self-obliviate himself from the troubles of the rest of the planet. He hoards his good things (and can be an extreme collector), ostensibly for the proverbial “rainy day” - which never seems to come. He’s stuck in a past, which he may or may not view with any clarity or with any critical thinking skills.

We all know Cancers like that - my late BFF was one - and if we ourselves have Cancer placements, we almost certainly “do” those types of behaviors when that placement feels threatened. So many of the challenging aspects over the next 30 days, unless we make an effort, will reinforce those less desirable traits.

The Cancerian isn’t usually going to seek out trouble, but when it lands on his doorstep he won’t turn away from it. Even if all he does is listen to the troubled person (Cancerians being the best listeners), he’s performing a kindness. He’s also capable of much more than that, when his prodigious sympathies are fully roused. His generosity is limitless. His notions of right/wrong are on the uncomplicated side, and at most he’ll mutter, “It was the right thing to do.”

In a nutshell, we have some healing adjustments to make. Our tendency will be to bury the hurts deeply, but that’s only a temporary solution. A little courage is called for, here.

We are not facing reality clearly, and the overactive Cancer imagination amplifies everything to seem worse than it really is. And again, the Moon (in its fall in Capricorn) illumines the issues. Lighten up!

A Taurus Moon is a bit of an intermediary between the two, and helps us ground/center ourselves in this ethereal love.

We need to remember how much even the tiniest action has a huge effect on the entire Universe - and then we need to break free of our comfort zones and damned well go out and do it.

on your phases: how are they determined? has there any instances you know of where a collector has two phases at the same time? (i.e waxing and gibbous, quarter and gibbous, etc.)

The Coordinator: No, that is not how phases work. There are two "complete" states, the new moon and the full moon. Any phase before the full moon is waxing, and any phase after is waning, with quarter, crescent, and gibbous signifying how much light there is on the moon. Despite being called a quarter, the first and final quarter moons are when the moon is half covered in light, much like how my face appears. A crescent is between the quarter and new moon, and the gibbous is between the quarter and full moon. So yes, someone could be a waxing gibbous but no one could be a quarter and gibbous because those are two contradicting, different things.

  “How is that even possible?” you might be asking yourself. “I made my own phone out of a Speak and Spell, an umbrella lined with tin foil, and a coffee tin full of household electronics.” Rest assured, we here at GalactiComm® were all thoroughly impressed by your resourcefulness. However, your message was transmitted through our vast interplanetary network of satellites and no one gets to hitchhike on our network for free.

  Even though this could have been perceived as an emergency call, we cannot – okay, we can, but we won’t – reverse the charges. Is it true the government of the United States performed tests on you? Harrowing stuff.

  “Why do I owe so much?” you might also be wondering. Technology and what’s included in our phone plans has changed a lot in the last 39 years. If you placed this call today with our Roam Away From Home® package there wouldn’t be any additional charges. When you placed your call the standard rate at the time was, admittedly, gougingly high. The amount owing has been accruing interest, and compounded thrice-weekly, for the last 39 years. You must pay $29,000,000 Space Shillings or an arm and a leg.

  Yes, you read that correctly: an arm and a leg. Literally. It’s a thing. No, you cannot pay with one arm or one leg, nor can you pay with two arms or two legs. It has to be an arm and a leg. Your arm and leg. We know our members value choice, so the method of payment is up to you.

  We were intrigued to learn that you were befriended by a young humanoid. Our sources tell us that you and the one named Elliot shared a special bond. It would be a shame if something were to happen to him…

  No, no, no, that’s not a threat. But it would be terrible if this Elliot, now a fully grown Earthling man, were to be “accidentally” beamed up into the empty abyss of space and probed until his mind was beyond repair. Now that I think about it, I should probably check if they’re planning on bringing you in alive. You know how those wacky Predators like to hunt things for sport. What with their collection of skulls and spines.
