was scouring a search of ice and fire for theon jeyne & sam gilly parallels and made a devastating discovery…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sam and theon, to me, are used by grrm to directly contrast archetypes of bravery as well as masculinity. sam and theon have similar upbringings in that they never felt home in their homes, nor did they have great relationships with their fathers (this develops later for theon but is relevant all the same), who held their inability to perform masculinity to their ideals against them.
now, onto gilly and jeyne.
sam and theon have a really interesting parallel where they both experience an iteration of saving the princess in the tower, though the way george subverts this is immaculate in my opinion. gilly and jeyne are so far from the princess/maiden archetype it’s heart breaking: in the literal sense neither of them are maidens as they no longer have their maidenhood and have been ‘defiled’ (i’m going by in-universe rules here) by evil men such as craster and ramsay. a sense of fabrication and imitation clings to them both, with gilly playing both a daughter and a wife to craster, and jeyne being passed off to the boltons as arya stark.
in short, they are not, archetypically, at all similar to what a girl should be in order to be saved. they are broken they are hurt….
and yet they are saved all the same.
both sam and theon are characterised by their cravenly nature at the point in their narratives where gilly and jeyne are introduced. sam suffers from low self esteem as a result of his father’s constant abuse and bullying, while theon suffers the same both mentally and physically at the hands of ramsay.
what do these two men do, though, despite all that they have experienced so far?
they find it in themselves to save the girl. they are not knights they are not princes they are not even truly men, and yet they overcome all that limits them to save gilly and jeyne from their demons.
theon, who has thus far been only selfish and known as a traitor, puts aside all his fear and trauma to do something larger than himself: save himself and jeyne with him. sam, who has never been allowed the opportunity to show valour, who doesn’t even believe he has it in him after the relentless berating from his father, saves a girl in need because what is the night’s watch if not an organisation meant to protect the weak?

ADWD – Jon II
"A mother can't leave her son, or else she's cursed forever. Not a son. We saved him, Sam and me. Please. Please, m'lord. We saved him from the cold."
"Men say that freezing to death is almost peaceful. Fire, though … do you see the candle, Gilly?"
She looked at the flame. "Yes."
"Touch it. Put your hand over the flame."
Her big brown eyes grew bigger still. She did not move.
"Do it." Kill the boy. "Now."
[...]
Gilly lowered her hand. An inch. Another. When the flame licked her flesh, she snatched her hand back and began to sob.
"Fire is a cruel way to die. Dalla died to give this child life, [...]. You saved your own boy from the ice. Now save hers from the fire."
AFFC – Samwell I
Gilly had appeared, the child bundled in her arms. Beneath her hood her eyes were red from crying.
AFFC – Samwell II
Sam tried to keep a brave face on him, for Gilly's sake if little else. She had never seen the sea before. […] As Blackbird slipped away from shore the girl began to tremble, and big salt tears rolled down her cheeks. "Gods be good," Sam heard her whisper. Eastwatch vanished first, and the Wall grew smaller and smaller in the distance, until it finally disappeared. The wind was coming up by then. The sails were the faded grey of a black cloak that had been washed too often, and Gilly's face was white with fear.
[…]
No happy choice. Sam thought of all the trials that he and Gilly suffered, Craster's Keep and the death of the Old Bear, snow and ice and freezing winds, days and days and days of walking, the wights at Whitetree, Coldhands and the tree of ravens, the Wall, the Wall, the Wall, the Black Gate beneath the earth. What had it all been for? No happy choices and no happy endings.
He wanted to scream. He wanted to howl and sob and shake and curl up in a little ball and whimper. He switched the babes, he told himself. He switched the babes to protect the little prince, to keep him away from Lady Melisandre's fires, away from her red god. If she burns Gilly's boy, who will care? No one but Gilly.

who do you think in asoiaf would ve best adjusted if they got dumped in our world? i gote renly discovers Grindr in five minutes and does the no face shirtless body profile
Jaime would absolutely get an insta and start posting thirst traps within 30 minutes of being here. Eventually he and Renly would get in a competition for who can show the most skin without their pics being taken down for violating policy. Jaime eventually posts a full blown dick pic and doesn’t understand why everyone blows up his phone afterward, bc he didn’t totally understand that just everyone could see his posts
Most well adjusted though? I feel like Sam would do pretty good. He would IMMEDIATELY move somewhere warm like Florida or something bc FUCK THE WALL, and he would take Gilly with him. He’d go to community college while they both raise the baby, and just settle into a nice simple life. I think Sam would like that there isn’t as much emphasis placed on *bravery* and knightly standards of masculinity, and would feel more comfortable in his own skin. He and Gilly would definitely be that couple that sits in their rocking chairs on their front porch like 95% of the time they’re home. They don’t even have to talk, they just enjoy each other’s company and go to bed early. Sam would do good imo

_______________________________________
Dickon Tarly beheld the disheveled young woman with the fussing baby in her arms. She had kind eyes, he thought quietly as she was caressing her pregnant belly.
This was the woman his brother loved.
The child he had taken in as his.
And the unborn babe that was his.
His brother, Samwell a deserter, an oath breaker, a stealer of maidens and father of bastards…
Granted Dickon hadn’t seen Sam in quiet some time, since he had been a little boy himself, but the existence of that woman contradicted everything he knew about his older brother, everything his father had preached about useless Sam, that Dickon couldn’t really do anything but stare really.
Gilly. Her name was Gilly like the flower. Gilly was pretty, not breathtakingly beautiful like a heroine of songs, but soft and sweet and gentle. Just like Dickon remembered Sam to be.
Sam who had stood before their gates this afternoon, still clad in the black of the Nights watch and had asked shelter for the pregnant girl while he went on to Old Town…
Dickon could just stare at his brother, the brother who would have been in his place if their father would have seen worth in him. Dickon himself had never really wasted a thought on Samwell since he believed to never see him again anyway. What was a Reach Lords business so far North anyway?
His silence was mistaken for disapproval he feared since his sweet mother bagged him to aid Sam. Even Talla suddenly remembered a love for Samwell she had not voiced when he had been disinherited.
Dickon would have liked to ask Randel what to do. Not because he couldn’t imagine the answer but hearing it from his father made it seem right to him.
But Lord Tarly was with the Tyrells, so it was Dickon’s call. And maybe he was still a little boy with fancy in his head, but this was still his Sam above all the other things. So, he let the woman and the babe stay.
Maybe he should have hugged Samwell?
Maybe he should have said more to him?
Maybe it was the last time he would see him?
Now, hours later he watched the woman with the small child, listen to the foreign melody she sung quietly to the boy and watched the moon light reflect in those soft brown eyes.
She reminded him of a doe, he realized.
“I am sorry, my Lord.”, the woman spoke to Dickon maybe the first time since she had arrived at his home.
“My father is the Lord.”, he answered promptly.
She gave him a sigh he could not place. “But right now, you act as Lord for him, right? You call me Lady too, even though I am far from one and honestly can’t stand it.”
“What is his name?”, Dickon asked after giving her an aloof shrug. She wasn’t entirely wrong. Maybe he was closer to being a Lord than she was a Lady.
“He doesn’t have one, not a real one at least not yet. It’s strange to me that you folk just give children their real names without knowing if they die or not… Feels like challenging the gods to me but we call him Monster for now…”
Dickon didn’t know what he should answer her. He did not completely get what she meant by you folk, but he knew that enough children died during infancy even up here were it was warm and lush…
“Do you call him Monster because he never sleeps?”
“Val called him Monster because of his father.”
But Dickon didn’t ask who the father was or were exactly her people where from or who this Val person was, she spoke of… It just cemented in his mind that Sam wasn’t the father, not in blood anyway, but he might be the only father this poor little worm ever knows… He could not imagine anyone calling his weak and soft brother a monster.
“What are you doing out here at this time anyway, my Lord?”
“I guess I am just restless too.”

Sam needed sleep as well, but he was drunk on rum and mother's milk and Gilly. He knew he ought to crawl back to his own hammock in the men's cabin, but she felt so good curled up against him that somehow he could not move. (A Feast for Crows, Samwell IV)

I love when George has POVs meet (in general), but specifically when he addresses differences in knowledge. What one POV is ignorant of but that is basic facts to another POV.
Like when Sam and Bran meet at the Nightfort, and Sam learns who Summer is:
"Jon... Jon was my brother too. He was the best friend I ever had, but he went off with Qhorin Halfhand to scout the Frostfangs and never came back. We were waiting for him on the Fist when… when…" "Jon’s here," Bran said. "Summer saw him. He was with some wildlings, but they killed a man and Jon took his horse and escaped. I bet he went to Castle Black." Sam turned big eyes on Meera. "You’re certain it was Jon? You saw him?" "I'm Meera,” Meera said with a smile. "Summer is…" A shadow detached itself from the broken dome above and leapt down through the moonlight. Even with his injured leg, the wolf landed as light and quiet as a snowfall. The girl Gilly made a frightened sound and clutched her babe so hard against her that it began to cry again. "He won’t hurt you," Bran said. "That’s Summer."
Like yeah! Of course Sam would think the unnamed girl was 'Summer'.
'S'not, tho

I kinda think the ambiguous morality, “dark turn” thing of Jon forcing Gilly to swap the babies is undercut by it being the right thing to do
Was it, though?
Jon's got good reason to think that this swap is the only way Mance's child survives. But does that justify what he does to Gilly and to her child? Gilly's not an incapable parent. She's not abusing her own child. What has she done that means her child should be taken from her? What justifies taking Gilly's child from a loving parent? What do Gilly and her child get in return from Jon's actions?
No. Jon screwed Gilly over badly. He caused her immense pain and exposes her child to danger they didn't have to be in. Gilly's child could die for what Jon did. He did it to save the life of another child, he doesn't have great options, but that doesn't mean it was a good thing to do.
