Respected Shri Giriraj Singh,
Minister of Textiles,
Government of India,
New Delhi.
Subject: Concerns regarding the lack of job opportunities for highly qualified and exprienced candidates in fashion industry in India.
Dear Sir,
I am writing to bring to your attention several concerns regarding the fashion industry in India, particularly with regards to the high fees structure of NIFT (National Institutes of Fashion Technology) and the lack of job opportunities for fresh graduates and 40+years exprienced professionals.
The high fees structure of NIFT, approximately 30 lakh for a 4-year B-Tech program, is a significant burden for students. Despite paying such high fees, fresh graduates struggle to find employment opportunities. Only 30% of fresh graduates get jobs, while 70% struggle to find employment.
Furthermore, the garments industry lacks parameters for selecting qualified and talented candidates. The industry is led by over 80% unqualified and non-professional employees, which is a significant concern.
I would like to highlight the plight of highly qualified and experienced candidates, particularly those above 40 years of age. Despite their extensive expertise, they are facing significant challenges in finding job opportunities. It is disheartening to note that many companies are shutting their doors to these candidates, often citing age-related biases.
Moreover, I have observed that manipulation and grouping within companies often work against qualified candidates. Favoritism and biases can lead to unfair treatment, denying deserving candidates opportunities for growth and development. I urge the Ministry to address these issues and promote fair and inclusive hiring practices, ensuring that qualified and experienced candidates are given equal opportunities regardless of age or other biases."
I urge the Ministry of Textiles to address these issues and provide opportunities for new and upcoming designers and professionals. The Ministry should also work towards creating a fair selection process that prioritizes qualified, talented, and experienced candidates.
Some potential solutions to these issues include:
- Industry-Academia Collaboration: Encourage NIFT and other fashion institutions to collaborate with the industry to provide students with practical experience and job opportunities.
- Internship Programs: Implement internship programs that allow students to gain experience and build connections in the industry.
- Mentorship Initiatives: Establish mentorship programs that pair experienced professionals with fresh graduates, providing guidance and support.
- Revised Curriculum: Review and revise the curriculum to ensure it aligns with industry requirements and provides students with relevant skills.
I hope you will consider my concerns and work towards creating a more supportive ecosystem for fashion professionals in India.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Madhusudan Kr. Lal

[ad_1] New Delhi: A fiery exchange erupted in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday as Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee confronted Union Minister Giriraj Singh over the disbursement of MGNREGA funds to West Bengal. The verbal clash reached a boiling point when Banerjee, angered by Singh’s remarks, snapped, “Who has made you a minister?”, sparking uproar in the House. Tension Over Withheld MGNREGA Funds During the session, Banerjee fiercely accused the Union government of depriving Bengal of its rightful allocation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) funds. He highlighted that the state had been raising this issue for three years, but the Centre continued to withhold funds based on alleged financial irregularities amounting to ₹25 lakh. “The Centre claims there is a fraud of ₹25 lakh, and we have consistently urged them to take action. But that cannot be a reason to deny benefits to 10 crore people of the state,” Banerjee asserted. Lok Sabha Speaker Intervenes Amidst Uproar The confrontation escalated when Banerjee directly lashed out at Giriraj Singh, questioning his authority as a minister. The comment provoked strong objections from Treasury Benches, leading to a heated disruption. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal was quick to defend Singh, stating, “During Question Hour, members are supposed to ask questions, not make personal comments. Who is he to question someone’s ministerial appointment?” In response to the escalating verbal spat, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla intervened, urging all members to maintain decorum and professionalism. “Personal comments should be avoided. Choose your words carefully while speaking. No one should respond to unofficial remarks,” Birla stated, attempting to restore order. However, his appeal was met with visible discontent from the Opposition benches. Centre Justifies MGNREGA Fund Blockage Addressing Banerjee’s demand for fund allocation, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan reiterated the allegations of irregularities in Bengal’s MGNREGA implementation. “The issue of fund obstruction is repeatedly raised in this House by the same MP. The Centre’s investigative team found evidence that central schemes were being renamed, tenders were divided into smaller parts, and our officials were mistreated. Strong action will be taken against corruption,” Paswan declared. Ongoing Tussle Between Centre and Bengal Over MGNREGA The MGNREGA funds issue has become a major point of contention between the Centre and the West Bengal government. While the state government has repeatedly accused the Centre of financial discrimination, the Union government insists that procedural violations and corruption in the scheme’s execution have led to fund suspension. The TMC has vowed to escalate the issue further, while the BJP maintains that funds will not be released until strict compliance measures are met. The ongoing standoff ensures that MGNREGA funds will remain a hot political battleground in the lead-up to upcoming elections. Respected Shri Giriraj Singh,
Ministry of Textiles, Government of India
New Delhi.
Dear Sir,
The Plight of Experienced Fashion Industry Professionals in India's Private Sector: A Call to Action
I've highlighted a pressing issue in the private sector, particularly in the creative fashion industry. Experienced designers, merchandisers, and other qualified professionals are being undervalued and pushed out due to arbitrary age limits set by HR departments.
It's astonishing that HR departments claim professionals over 40+years are no longer capable of working in the industry. This is not only ageist but also ignores the wealth of knowledge and expertise these individuals bring. There are very less job opportunities are come for Director, VP, Manager and departments head.
You've aptly pointed out that government jobs offer stability, which is lacking in the private sector. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean that private sector employees should be denied the opportunity to work longer if they're able.
India's private sector, particularly the creative fashion industry, is plagued by a disturbing trend: the devaluation of experienced professionals. Despite their wealth of knowledge and expertise, individuals over 40 are being systematically denied job opportunities. This phenomenon is not only unjust but also detrimental to the growth and development of the industry.
The fashion industry is notorious for its fast-paced and ever-changing nature. Trends and color forecasts change rapidly, and designers and merchandisers must adapt quickly to remain relevant. However, this does not justify the outright dismissal of experienced professionals. Their ability to navigate the industry's complexities and adapt to new challenges is invaluable.
In contrast, government jobs offer stability and security, which is lacking in the private sector. Nevertheless, this does not mean that private sector employees should be denied the opportunity to work longer if they are able. Many countries have increased their retirement ages, and some have even abolished mandatory retirement ages.
Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Anil Kapoor are shining examples of professionals who have continued to thrive in their 70s and beyond. Similarly, ISRO, NASA and top Colleges & University have demonstrated the value of experienced scientists, professors, writers and other professionals by hiring them for critical projects.
Entrepreneurship is not easy to handle to all exprienced and qualified professionals in India and abroad.
To address this issue, the Indian government must take proactive steps:
1. *Provide financial support and tax rebates: Offer incentives to private sector companies that retain and hire experienced professionals.
2. *Promote meritocracy: Ensure that hiring and promotion decisions are based solely on talent, qualifications, and experience.
3. *Abolish age-based discrimination: Enact legislation that prohibits age-based discrimination in the private sector.
4. *Foster a culture of lifelong learning: Encourage companies to invest in training and upskilling programs that help experienced professionals stay relevant.
By valuing and retaining experienced professionals, India's private sector can:
1. Boost productivity: Experienced professionals can mentor and guide younger colleagues, increasing overall productivity.
2. Drive innovation: The combination of experienced professionals and fresh talent can lead to innovative solutions and ideas.
3. Enhance competitiveness: Companies that retain experienced professionals can gain a competitive edge in the market.
In conclusion, the devaluation of experienced professionals in India's private sector is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. By promoting meritocracy, providing financial incentives, and abolishing age-based discrimination, we can create a more inclusive and equitable work environment.
This, in turn, will drive growth, innovation, and competitiveness in the private sector.
Sincerely
Madhusudan Lal
