Hi everyone!
My name is Kay, and I’m a math and physics student! I have a particular interest in astrophysics and cosmology, and I’m hoping to broaden my horizons as my degree progresses! :)
I initially had one blog, @elemmirekirk5031, but I’ve decided to divide my blogs to better suit my interests. I intend to post studyblr related material on this blog, as well as interesting science facts. My original blog will host my other hobbies, such as philosophy, memes, art and everything that catches my interest.
I follow many blogs and I’m always on the lookout for more great blogs! If you’re a math or physics blog, please let me know so I can follow you back!
I’d like to tag my fellow studyblrs @urania-n, @astraeuzz, @astraea-studies, and @girls-studyrobotics. I’ve always looked forward to seeing your posts on my dash!
I’m currently a second year undergrad student, if you have any questions relating to studying college and my subjects, please let me know! :)

Alright, so, it’s 12:30 AM and technically I’m supposed to be working on a project that’s do this weekend, but that’s not until this weekend and I wanted to talk about the cool lecture I attended today.
My university’s chapter of the Society of Physics Students hosted a lecture by Dr. K. Rajibul Islam from the University of Waterloo. Out of the three lectures I’ve attended so far, this one was definitely the most accessible and easy to understand, which was awesome. There are students in the org who are taking quantum mechanics right now, so he definitely could have made it more technical, but there are also students who are in their second college physics class and have very little to no knowledge on the subject. There’s also me, who reads this stuff for fun and kind of understands some basic things, but to hear the basics explained in different ways can always help provide more understanding. The other lectures I’ve attended have been on astrophysics, and while I’ve enjoyed them and learned from them, there was a lot of stuff I couldn’t understand simply because I wasn’t familiar with the field or the math behind it to the extent the lecturer was. So that was really cool.
He started out by explaining quantum states and where they show up. Apparently, at temperatures near absolute zero (0 K or -273 °C), atoms take on properties similar to waves, which is how a Bose-Einstein Condensate is formed! Those atoms, are now considered quantum objects, since they have properties of both particles and waves! There’s also a lot of technology that relies on quantum mechanics to function, such as transistors, diodes, and MRIs.
He then went on to talk about the problems with simulating quantum mechanics now (it takes waaay to much memory to do anything useful), and why this is best achieved with a quantum processor. Basically, a processor that uses quantum bits, or qubits, already knows the rules of quantum mechanics, by nature of being in a quantum state. This idea is ascribed to Richard Feynman. There was more that he talked about in terms of quantum computers vs quantum simulators and different methods of building a quantum simulator, but I don’t trust myself to explain that 😅.
He also explained how they trap ions at the facility where he does his research, which is similar to the method used to obtain a photograph of a single atom in 2018. The requirements include an ultra high vacuum, an ionization process, and laser cooling methods to put in such a low energy state that the ions don’t move much.
It was a very cool and exciting lecture, and it was very easy to force myself to pay attention to it, which is probably due to the fact that this is one of my hobby interests. I ended up taking a page and a half of notes, and it went much better than my actual classes (oops). However, I still found that I was easily distracted by not being in a classroom setting, and I had to force myself to focus back in a few times. It was kind of tiring, which was really unfortunate, given that immediately after I had to go to my digital electronics class (15 minutes late, double oops) (totally worth it though).
Alright, it is now 1:30 AM, so I’m going to wrap this up! Please note that I’m not at all an expert in this stuff, so correct me if I’m wrong. I literally have read a few articles and attended one lecture on quantum, so I could very easily be wrong lol.
#oh boy i really want to end each sentence in an exclamation point but i wont do that to yall#i have more notes cause he talked about more things but at a certain point i no longer trust myself to explain it in a way to be understood#physics#quantum physics#i ramble about cool things#girls studyrobotics

A then and now: pictures from when I’ve struggled with online classes and flowers make it seem a little lighter. Maybe I’ll draw these ones, too!
To all of my college friends: if you’re not done yet, we’re almost there! If you are, congrats on surviving this whirlwind of a semester!
To all of my high school friends: I am so proud of you for everything you’ve done this semester. I remember when I was struggling with one online class my senior year. It’s hard to balance everything already, and this change doesn’t help.
Remember to take time for yourself during all of this. If there’s something small that you could do (like going outside and picking some flowers), I highly recommend doing it. It helps more than you think. In addition to that, I recommend creating something, some sort of output you can point to and prove that you have an impact on the world around you. Arrange some flowers, draw a picture, paint, sculpt, knit, sew, anything physical that you can create will help. And if you need help with your math homework or just someone to talk to when you feel alone, shoot me an ask or a message! We all have to lean on each other in hard times 💕

Hey guys! Since I’m still taking classes this summer I thought I would do a tag for ya’ll to join in on. I’ll be posting under the tag #summer study romance. I’m also tracking it so feel free to join in!
My projects for this summer include:
taking Mythology and Writing for the Workplace at the local community college
organizing and cleaning out my room as I unpack for the summer
embroidering over the Harvard logo of a super comfy sweatshirt my mom found at a yard sale
getting a part time job somewhere (maybe at the garden center?)
possibly typing up my comp sci notes for easier access

I started Intro to Programming in C today on Coursera to get some notes on the basics before I start Computer Science 1 in about a month. Somehow I passed the placement test and got out of Intro to C at school, and instead of just doubting whether I should be in CS 1 I’m just going to over prepare!
I start my freshman year August 27th, which is slightly terrifying, and move in August 17th, which is exciting. Wish me luck!

It’s been awhile! I’m back at school for my second semester now and I thought I’d give a bit of an update.
In all I think it went well, and I mostly enjoyed it. College is definitely better than high school. I actually managed to make the dean’s list which I’m super pumped and surprised about. I took 16 credit hours on top of marching/pep band and I’m doing it all again this semester!
Classes I’m taking this semester:
Calc 3
University Physics 2
Computer Science 2
Foundations of American Experience
Fundamentals of Robotics Engineering
Goals for next semester:
Read the textbook before my physics lectures and not after so I don’t play catch up
No all-nighters! I did one last semester and it was because of poor communication and time management and it was awful
Spend time with different groups of people and not spend all my free time with one or two people
Get involved with something so I have to spend time doing something with other people
Make a habit of calling home in the afternoon so my mom doesn’t feel like she’s reminding me to call
Express myself without thinking of what others will think. I can definitely wear a dress or purple lipstick to class if I want!
Some of these things get more complicated when you through dating in the mix and I would like to date but I’m not sure how to juggle it all and keep a balanced social life. I’m in a relationship now but I think they want to take things more seriously than I do. If any of you have any tips of dating & studies or dating & independence send me an ask! I think this is something the studyblr community is split on, I know of a few blogs who don’t date to stay focused on their studies and get their dream jobs.

How to Apply for (and Get!) ALL the Scholarships
Hello! I’m back! I have some news: I can now officially pay for my fancy private school debt free!!! How? By applying for scholarships! And I’m going to tell you why and how to do it.
Most people seem to get it in their head that if they don’t have a 4.0 and a laundry list of extracurricular and volunteer experience, they won’t win anything. That’s not true!!! Many scholarships just want you to write an essay, and a lot have too few applicants to turn anyone down.
People also tend to only apply for the big scholarships. Use this to your advantage, even if you only get $500, that’s still one semester’s worth of books you paid for!
Here are some things to do to get started!
Create a resume
Google docs has some great professional looking templates. Make sure your resume is organized in a way that makes sense but also has your most important roles at the top!! Whoever reads it might not read the whole thing, make sure to give them something to keep reading!
Make sure to include any job or volunteer experience, and any extracurricular activities. All of these should have a one-sentence summary of your main role and where it was. Have a short bullet point list of any responsibilities you had. If you had a leadership position, talk about that in your summary and have that as the focus.
If you won any awards or have any special skills, make sure you put that somewhere. For example, I have used a few different CAD programs and am CPR certified. These are the types of things you want them to know. Any awards you or your team has won should have a summary stating what it was for and who gave it to you.
Write a little on common topics
Most scholarships want you to write an essay about your experiences or on a topic pertaining to the scholarship. A lot of these essay prompts are very similar, and your essays can be reused quite easily the more scholarships you apply for. If you have some down time during the summer or fall, try to use it to write on these common topics:
What you’ve learned in: high school, volunteer or job experience, your favorite class, a trip
Why you want a specific job
Why you want a scholarship
Why you deserve a scholarship
Talk about any extracurriculars, specifically leadership experience or awards/achievements, why you do it
Talk about any volunteer experience, specifically leadership experience, why you do it
These shouldn’t be very long, anywhere from 100-300 words is perfect! You will have to piece a lot of these together for most essays, and you can always expand on it later.
Essay tips:
be honest it’s easier to write about what you’re truly passionate about than whatever you think they want to hear
know your audience If you’re writing an essay for a scholarship in memory of someone who died due to drunk driving, don’t write about how you’re greatest memory with your friends was when you went drinking. On the other side, if the scholarship is in memory of a parent that died, talk about family
be concise If you don’t have a word minimum, only submit what you like; don’t reach the word maximum if half of your essay if just saying the same things over again
Get a copy of your transcript
If you are going into your senior year, it is very important for college apps and some scholarships to submit your transcript. If you can do this yourself, you don’t run the risk of someone else sending it too late. If you haven’t finished your sophomore year yet I wouldn’t worry about it.
Get letters of recommendation
You never know how long someone will want to spend on a letter, so ask ASAP. You’ll want these right away so you can see who’s is best and which ones play to the strengths scholarships are looking for.
Who to ask:
Coaches
Favorite teachers
Supervisors
If you had a class that directly involves your field of study, make sure to ask that teacher! Since I am going into engineering, I applied for a lot of engineering scholarships. Most wanted letters from STEM teachers. Since I had taken engineering, I asked that teacher, and he talked about my problem solving skills and things that directly relate to my skills as an engineer. You will want letters that say these kinds of things about you!
When you ask, make sure you also send them an email about it. Include a copy of your resume so they know what you have done and what to talk about. Many will ask for this anyway, so you might as well get ahead! If it applies, ask them to talk about your skills in the field you are going into.
Start researching!
Where to look:
Talk to school counselors
Check your school’s website
Ask teachers
Ask your parents to see if their workplace offers a scholarship
Check at your bank
Or start creating accounts at other banks in the area if you’re an underclassman. A lot of banks only offer scholarships to their members!
Check at the colleges you’ve applied to
Ask admissions counselors at local schools and your colleges
Talk to coaches or advisers
Check at local foundations
Google “your major/field + scholarships”
Scholarships in your area are your best bet, national or regional scholarships get so many applicants it can be hard to stand out. Make sure any national or regional scholarships you apply for are narrowed to the field you are going into or an activity you participated in!
Apply for local scholarships you don’t think you’ll get if you have the essay for it! Like I said, many local scholarships don’t get enough applicants, and you might be one of three! This is where you could get some surprise money.
Stay organized!
I created a handy little organizer to keep track of everything I was applying for. It has spots to put a link for more information, the essay prompt, information on the letters of rec required, and any more tasks needed to complete the application. See it here!
Good luck! If you need any more tips feel free to ask!

Some Calc notes I took today. I’ve been really busy lately, but I did get to go home this past weekend! It was nice to see my lovely friends.
Classes are going well, physics is harder than I was expecting (got a 64% on the first test but hopefully the review for the next one will help sos).
Probably going to be posting about once or twice a month this semester instead of once a week like I had been hoping simply because I’ve been so busy. Even my queue has been empty because I haven’t been going on tumblr much!
If ya’ll want to see something, reach out! I still check my messages and inbox once a week, so if you do I might end up posting more often!

I moved in to my new dorm last week for band camp, and finally found the time today to update you all!
Band camp was really hectic because it’s the first marching band here in about fifty years, but it was a lot of fun, and I made some new friends. If you have the chance to move in early I would definitely recommend it. I really appreciated the extra week before classes to set things up and get to know campus better. The dorm is also a lot quieter before everyone else moves in, so if you need some time to acclimate to a new place, whether its for sleeping or just figuring out a new routine, it’s nice to have the extra time.
This semester I will be taking 16 credit hours, which some people would say is crazy, but I need to be taking more in the future if I want to graduate in four years.
I am taking:
College Composition
University Physics
Computer Science 1
Calculus 2
Fundamentals of Engineering Design Projects
Even though there is about a 3:4 girl:boy ratio here, I have at most five girls in each of my classes, probably because I’m an engineering major. Most of the girls here apparently flock to design and pre-med, but that just means I might have more of a bond with the few girls I’m in classes with through the years.
I haven’t bought books yet because a lot of the advice on here is to wait to see what the professor says, but I will probably buy most of them today, simply because the advice on campus is to buy early.
I might make another post next week about how I’ve organized things in my room, so I’ll see you all then!

studyblr intro
I made a studyblr a while back to get hyped for school and it sort of fell apart once school actually started so here I am, trying again!
My name is Marisa (nice to meet you!)
I'm a senior in high school this year and 17
I'm graduating in May (!!!)
I live in the Midwest (US)
quintessential nerd
I'm on a robotics team (FIRST & FRC)
My favorite subject is math
I'm a perfectionist, anxious, and probably have executive disfunction
I love space and physics and learning about the world around me
slytherin/ravenclaw
Classes I'm taking:
Band
English 12
AP Physics 1
Art
Visual Basic & Java programming
AP Calculus AB
Future plans:
I will be majoring in Robotics Engineering next fall
I want to get an internship at a company like SpaceX or NASA
My dream job is to build rovers at NASA
Goals:
In order to keep all my scholarships I need to maintain a 3.8 but I made it a personal goal a while back to graduate with a 3.9
I started a journal at the beginning of the year and I want to write in it at least once a week
Use less than $5 worth of data a month
My username was inspired by @roboticsisforgirlstoo, who I found while I was creating mine. I decided to add girls at the beginning because I've seen first hand the lack of women in STEM, as I've been one of seven girls in my engineering classes (there's about 120 students total) and am one of six girls on my robotics team (about 30 students total). There's a lot of cultural things that have caused this and I've read and written a lot about it and will probably make a post on it in the future. I actually thought for a long time that I wanted to be an architect, and didn't want to consider engineering because it's "for men". Thankfully I changed my mind!
Studyblrs I love:

I’m back with more editables! These are formatted for you to add your own goals and schedule in Google Drive. While you’re welcome to print a new one off each week, they’re best used (in my opinion) online or by placing them in a photo frame and using dry erase markers to fill it out each week. They are available in two different fonts with all color options! Here, “Script” is shown in magenta, and “Text” is shown in orange. The color combos (in the order shown in the image) are orange, red, magenta, blue, blue-green, and seafoam.
I created these with college in mind to show class schedules (I start in August and I’m really excited if you couldn’t tell), though you can also use them for high school. Below the cut I’ve included one I filled out as an example. If you need help adding more rows let me know!
Here’s the link to the folder on Google Drive!
Note: You must be logged in to Google Drive to make a copy. (file>>make a copy)
If you have a color request, feel free to tell me! I have no idea what colors to use, these I just got from google’s text colors.
Disclaimer: While these are free to use and edit, please don’t repost any of these images or files without my permission! It takes a lot of time for me to make all of these and I want to make sure I receive credit for it! If you do use them, feel free to tag me, I’d love to see it!
Here’s an example I filled out! It’s a pretty basic schedule, since my classes don’t change at all. I’m not actually using this right now, though I plan to in college since I’ll be on my own and it’s nice to have reminders of where I’m going and what I want to be doing.
At the top is a space to include the week dates (2/4-2/10) I’m treating the goals as more of a habit tracker thing, and you can just check the box to mark as complete, or rate how well you did something.
To add a new row in the schedule, right click in the table. To add a new goal, right click in the table and add a new row, then hit shift+8 to add a bullet point where the goal will be placed.
