'Glenn Ford was accused of racism after refusing to sit next to Gail Fisher at the Logie Awards in March 1973.' He was upset by sentiments expressed by the Australian media and politicians against President Richard Nixon and the #VietnamWar and even refused to shake hands with then Labor Senator and Minister for Media Doug McClelland at the Logies ceremony. The biography "Glenn Ford: A Life", written by his son, Peter Ford, states,"Before the end of the trip Prime Minister [Gough] Whitlam was quoted as saying: 'Someone should have put a bucket over Glenn Ford's head.' My father challenged Whitlam to it himself--if he dared." US ambassador Walter Rice felt obliged to offer a formal apology to the nation of Australia. A year after COVID, personal finances are not so grim for millions of Americans
Tumblr media
A year into the coronavirus pandemic, Megan McClelland is surprised by how steadily her credit and finances have improved.
“At first, it felt like doom and gloom,” says McClelland, 35. “But now I feel like I finally have more financial security.”
McClelland, a high school counselor in Petaluma, California, carries student loan debt from putting herself through both college and grad school while working multiple jobs. More recently, she worked a side gig at a seafood restaurant in a hotel to sock away extra money.
When she was laid off from the restaurant last spring, McClelland used her $1,200 stimulus check to meet with a financial advisor who showed her how to pay down her student debt while prioritizing saving for the future.
The year of COVID-19: Who has really benefited from the stock market boom?
‘I’m literally breaking inside’: As COVID-19 leaves millions jobless and struggling, the mental health toll rises
McClelland, who already has a 403(b) retirement plan through her employer at a public school, opened up a Roth IRA and a high-yield savings account to stash more money into her nest egg.
“The pandemic forced me to be smarter with my money,” McClelland added. “The past year has been so challenging on everyone, but I’m feeling more hopeful.”
Consumers made positive financial habits in pandemic
McClelland isn’t alone.
Americans made smart choices with their money at the start of the pandemic, according to Credit Karma, which provides consumers online tools to improve their finances. Payment delinquencies fell, consumers paid down debt and credit scores stayed relatively flat or even rose among certain score bands, says Colleen McCreary, chief people officer at Credit Karma.
This was helped in part as trillions of dollars in stimulus aid from Congress and the Federal Reserve propped up an economy gripped by recession.
“Americans are doing better financially than they think,” says McCreary. “The stimulus payments helped people pay down debt and make on-time credit card payments. There have also been fewer opportunities to spend money during the lockdowns, which has helped people save.”
Story continues
A year later: How much has the economy recovered and how far does it have to go?
As soon as Camara Queder received all three of her stimulus checks, she knew exactly what she would do with them: invest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Camara Queder
Queder, a 43-year-old single mother who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, used her payments to help max out her Roth IRA for both 2020 and 2021. She also deposited all three of the stimulus checks she received for her 11-year-old son into a custodial account to get him started investing early.
It felt like a relief, she says, after she spent recent years aggressively paying off her student loan and car debt through extreme couponing.
“It feels great,” says Queder, a customer relations representative at an analytical-equipment maker. “I want to teach my son all of the financial lessons I didn’t learn.”
Americans save more
Consumers are also prioritizing saving in an effort to be more prepared for the next economic crisis, according to McCreary. In aggregate, Americans have saved an extra $2 trillion during the pandemic and put away 13.6% of their income in February, government data shows. That’s down from a record 33.7% last April but well above the pre-pandemic level of about 8%.
A quarter of Americans reported they saved money during the crisis, Credit Karma data shows. Of those that were able to save, half were able to stockpile more than $1,500. That’s a lot considering almost 40% of Americans wouldn’t be able to cover a $400 emergency expense, according to the Federal Reserve.
“The pandemic has really inspired people to think about their finances and build a cushion just in case something else happens again in the future,” says McCreary.
More than a third of Hispanic respondents said that since the emergence of COVID-19, they have been able to save money, compared with 26% of Black and 22% of white respondents, according to Credit Karma.
The majority of consumers were also able to maintain or improve their credit scores in the second half of 2020, says McCreary. About 82% of Credit Karma members either saw their credit score rise or remain the same in that time span. And nearly a third saw their score increase.
Financial pain still lingers
To be sure, although Americans are feeling more optimistic, many are still struggling financially.
Although job growth is expected to build in the coming months thanks to vaccinations and another round of stimulus, economists say that it may take several years for the labor market to heal. So far, the U.S. has recovered 13.9 million, or 62%, of the 22.4 million jobs lost last spring, and is still 8.4 million below the pre-pandemic level.
Deep financial scars have been inflicted by the pandemic, with low-income households, minorities and women, in particular, suffering stinging job losses, which have only widened the divide between the haves and have-nots.
“There’s a tale of two cities across the U.S. in finances,” says McCreary. “One group can save money and pay down debt, likely people in jobs where they’ve been able to work from home. But then there’s this other population who is feeling the pain from the trickle down effects of unemployment.”
Fifty-one percent of Hispanic respondents, for instance, say their financial situation had worsened as a result of the pandemic (51%), compared with 39% of Blacks and 35% of whites, according to Credit Karma.
Not everyone feels financially secure
Although a majority of middle-income families continue to feel positively about their financial situation in the face of COVID-19, underlying economic vulnerabilities have surfaced, according to the latest Middle-Income Financial Security Monitor from Primerica, a financial services provider.
It conducts a quarterly national survey to monitor the financial health of those with annual household incomes of $30,000-$100,000.
About 57% of respondents say their financial situation is in good shape, while 59% say their income is falling behind the cost of living. More than half don’t have savings to go beyond three months of living expenses.
“Stimulus checks can help shore up people’s finances, but it’s only temporary,” says Glenn Williams, CEO of Primerica. “Those who have lost jobs are having severe financial difficulties. A stimulus check will help them for a period of time, but it’s not a long-term answer.”
About a third of consumers say their financial stability depends on a third stimulus check, according to Credit Karma. Nearly 50% of Black respondents reported their financial stability depended on a third stimulus check, compared with 43% of Hispanic and 31% of white respondents.
Affluent Americans achieve milestones
The split-screen America created by the coronavirus recession left many people financially intact and others facing lasting scars. One group is saving and spending while the other counts on unemployment and stimulus to make ends meet.
For instance, nearly half of affluent Americans have been getting their financial lives in order during the past year, according to recent data from Bank of America. It surveyed more than 2,000 affluent Americans with investable assets between $100,000 and $1 million.
SUBSCRIBE: Help support quality journalism like this.
Despite challenges imposed by the pandemic, about 84% of respondents believe they are on track to reach or have already achieved several financial milestones earlier in life than their parents, including opening an investing account (54%) and starting to save for retirement (53%).
The vast majority of affluent Americans are also prioritizing many traditional milestones in life, including owning a car (98%), owning a home (97%), saving their target amount for retirement (96%) and paying off credit card debt (94%), the survey found.
How people are feeling about their current financial situation is very much based on their personal circumstances, according to Williams.
“This is not a time to give people cookie-cutter financial advice,” says Williams. “You have to really look at people’s individual needs, goals and the impact the pandemic has had on their family to figure out what challenges they may need help overcoming through the advice of a financial professional.”
Families save for future but may need to do more
More than 70% of families are confident in their knowledge of important financial fundamentals like paying down credit card debt, building good credit, budgeting and saving, the Primerica data shows.
But they are less confident in setting up investment accounts like an Individual Retirement Account. They also are less likely to know how to buy life insurance (57%). Only 40% know where to find a financial professional who could provide assistance.
“What keeps people awake at night is their personal health, finances and being unemployed,” says Williams. “If you prioritize expenses, get your debt under control, protect your family’s income with life insurance and start a small investment program, it will better position you to withstand the next economic crisis.”

Artistsfacts: Byron Kim
Byron Kim is a romantic and poetic social commentator. He makes generally small scale, minimalist, monochromatic- i.e. one color, serial works that are engaging, personal and evocative. Hard to believe that these small panels can be so captivating and thought provoking. .
A contemporary Korean- American artist, born in 1961, Byron Kim received a BA from Yale University in 1983 and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1986.  He has stated that the most exciting part of his work as an artist is coming up with a good idea,  the second finishing something that has come out well. He claims no allegiance to any one technique or material but is primarily a painter with a strong sense of color.
Until his most recent show at James Cohan Gallery in New York entitled Sunday Paintings, the work by Byron Kim that I knew best was Synecdoche (1991- present) at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum. Synecdoche, the work by Byron Kim, is a grid of oil paint mixed with wax, monochrome, 10x 18 inch panels.  Each panel is a record of the skin color of a sitter. The colors are shades of beige, peach or brown, and each panel is titled the name of the sitter.  As the grid is presented, the names of the sitters are listed alphabetically by first name. Synecdoche, the word, means a figure of speech in which a part stands in for a whole. For Byron Kim this is a work of portraiture. For the viewer, it is a social commentary on race and individuality.  Some are tempted to try to match their skin tone to one of the panels.  Though at first glance the work is completely abstract, in reality it is representational and fiercely evocative.
Synecdoche was first shown at the Whitney Biennial in 1993. It is a work in process and currently there are 400 panels. He has said that he remembers every single person whose skin color he has copied.

Byron Kim, _Synecdoche [left to right, top to bottom: Annette Lemieux, Brice Marden, Byron Kim, Chuck Close, Donald Moffett, Donald Baechler, Ed Baynard, Elizabeth Murray, Fred Tomaselli, Fred Wilson, Glenn Ligon, James Casebere, Jane Hammond, Janine Antoni, Jon Kessler, Joyce Kozloff, Kiki Smith, Lesley Dill, Lois Dodd, Lorna Simpson, Lynne Yamamoto, Mel Bochner, Mel Chin, Merry Alpern, Lee Mingwei, Natvar Bhavsar, Nayland Blake, Oliver Herring, Philip Pearlstein, Polly Apfelbaum, Robert Gober, Robert Rahway Zakanitch, Sam Messer, Sandy Scolnik, Suzanne McClelland, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Vija Celmins, Vito Acconci, William Wegman]
For the series of this work at the National Gallery he added the “portraits” of the employees increasing the sense of inclusiveness, race, community and cultural biases or class. Color here acts a signifier and metaphor for the individual.
Tumblr media
Byron Kim paints the forearm of Jay Krueger at the National Gallery of Art. (Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post)
An interesting collaboration at the Smithsonian Institute, entitled Black and White  between Byron Kim and Glenn Ligon, examines the limited range of “flesh-colored” paint available in art stores. Byron Kim painted sixteen panels of the “white” flesh tones and Ligon painted sixteen panels using  black pigments.  Using the same grid as Synecdoche, this work again examines the superficiality of race.
Tumblr media
The Sunday Paintings which were recently on view at James Cohan Gallery in New York are each slightly larger in scale, 14″x14″, and are not monochromatic but rather show the sky on the Sunday it was painted. The series was begun on January 7, 2001, when he made a painting of the sky and below wrote: “Clear, snow melting dripped into the painting.  Every Sunday?”.  The Sunday paintings have continued virtually every Sunday since then, the notations at first at the bottom then in the middle of the canvas. A diary of occurrences or thoughts for the day.  The skies are realistic and varied. The blue, grey, clear or cloud-filled skies he sees over Brooklyn or California.
The paragraphs are autobiographical and often uneventful and mundane,  activities with the kids,  dinner parties, difficulty with work, marital comments,  moods, and from time to time an update on politics. The same short jottings one would expect in a quick diary note. “Today we have a black president” (“1/20/09”); Hurricanes Irene roils New York City (“8/28/11”); “Donald Trump is the president elect of the United States” (“11/14/16”).
It is a very moving project, making me at least wish I  had the same ability and discipline to beautifully chronicle my life. For Byron Kim this is a life long project and, as it requires that he observes the sky, it combines both observation and introspection. As opposed to On Kawara’s Date Paintings which followed a strict set of rules, with 3,000 made over four decades that only included the date on which they were made, there is a winsomeness to the works by Byron Kim, a willingness to let the viewer into his personal life. You are drawn to read all of the entries and observe the differences in the sky. Yet in common language,  a Sunday painter is an amateur painter who goes out and dabbles at painting  on his day off, not a professional, gallery represented artist.  These works therefore as with much of Byron Kim’s work engage the viewer in an intimate, perhaps  ironic and humorous moment,  one where the artist is painting for the pleasure of painting and making works that may not be as serious as the more weighty topics he takes on when he is pursuing his career as “an important artist”.
Byron Kim is a profound observer of intimate and small wonders that he renders with  poetic and seductive panache. There is often a link to poetry or writing. He has stated:”It’s almost like I don’t know anything except the little things I encounter every day and the relationships I have with people. I can only get at that in art by concentrating on very small things.”
In his Mud Root Ochre Leaf Star Series, Byron Kim painted bruises. These works both attract and repel, seduce and disgust. Without the titles these works could pass as beautiful, abstract,  color field stained canvases. With the titles, they force a questioning of violence versus beauty. They also draw strong parallels to the body as cosmos, to time as they show the evolution of the bruise.
The process used in these works show Byron Kim’s willingness to explore mediums. He boiled and dyed raw canvas and linen with natural dyes before stretching them onto frames, and,  to avoid brushstrokes, painted  with rags soaked in glue or oil.
The idea of painting a bruise came from a poem by Carl Phillips in which the poet observes a bruise on the skin of his sleeping lover. A  bruise is a stain under the skin,  paint is a stain on the canvas.  The titles of this work however comment as much on the event as on the process:  ” Evidence of a Struggle” and  ” Stain, Methylene Blue” for example.
Emphasizing his attention to detail and the way that his monochromatic panels are portraits, Byron Kim has used the format of the grid  to disarmingly document and portray all of the hues on his one year old son’s body.
Tumblr media
or his son at age 10 (not in grid form)
The series “What I see” uses a different aesthetic and medium. Byron Kim begins by  photographing  everything that he can see -360degrees in every direction, including his  feet and legs. As opposed to the photo assemblages by David Hockney,  his intent is to show the  individual within the vastness of the world and to emphasize the important places in his life, once again making the works delightfully personal.
At times the portraiture is simply a focus on a small detail as the two small paintings, seemingly brown and black monochromes that actually depict the hair whorls on the heads of his children Ella and Emmett.
Tumblr media
Whether influenced by his wife’s pregnancy or simply derived from his desire to make paintings that just ” have too much paint on them”, the Belly Paintings are bulging sacks of paint.  Often made on-site and installed inside galleries, seeming very precarious, these paintings consist of latex  or encaustic pouches attached to canvases and filled with latex paint and are reminiscent of pregnant bellies, thus hinting at figurative representation.
There is an attempt to use color as a trope or referent to the precariousness of memory in particular in works such as:
46 Halsey Drive Wallingford, a large work, 96″48′ that incorporates  the colors of his childhood home done by memory in house paint on plywood.
Tumblr media
Miss Mushinski (First Big Crush) derived from a top he wore  when his grade school teacher told him that she liked it. He claims he then wore it every day for three weeks.
Tumblr media
Not all of the series have the same poignancy and in my opinion emotional or social charge but continue his exploration of color as a key to cultural identity.
For example the Grey Green paintings inspired by the glazes of Goryeo Dyansty-period celadon wares important to the Korean community where he muses as to whether beauty is learnt or innate as he paints the various hues of green he sees in the glazes.
or the primarily black paintings inspired by the works of Maria Martinez, a New Mexican ceramicist was featured known for reviving Pueblo style of black-on-black pottery.
As a wonderful observer and interpreter of the intimacies and intricacies of life and society and an artist who forces the viewer to look deeper, care more, think more, Byron Kim is an artist whose future works and shows I look forward to.

Meh, I don’t think The SpongeBob Musical is premiering in February as was initially rumored (I had a feeling it wasn’t). An ensemble member I’m following, Lauralyn McClelland, has joined the full cast of SUNSET BOULEVARD which is premiering on Broadway February 9th I believe (otherwise, I’m actually pretty excited for Sunset Boulevard, I loove the movie, and I love Glenn Close, and it’s nice to see this show on Broadway again). Granted, Lauralyn will probably leave the cast as soon as SpongeBob gets announced but that probably won’t be for awhile. Thing is, Playbill.com will announce venues for shows months ahead of time. They don’t announce theatres at the last minute, and seeing as it’s not announced yet (and March is approaching fast, the cut-off before April 27th), it most likely won’t be announced till NEXT year.
It’s not a super big deal, but at the same time it makes me a little sad because SpongeBob shares so much more similarities with the shows this season than next season. It would have been the sixth show directed by a woman...now there’s only five shows on Broadway this season with female directors. It also would have been one of the shows with a huge colour blind cast, and a political message. Next year, looking at the 2017-2018 season, it looks like it will be the only political show (unless something else comes out of nowhere), and it may be the only one directed by a woman (again, unless something else comes up). Also, if Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is, indeed, coming to Broadway in 2018, they don’t stand much of a chance next year, even if they have more competition this year between The Great Comet and Dear Evan Hansen. (But seriously, Cursed Child was sold out in the West End, people camped outside the theatre waiting for it to open on the day it premiered. The HP fandom is nuts! And despite SpongeBob’s popularity, half the world is going to flock to HP, seeing as tickets are already on sale in advance, trust me on this.) Point being, if they’re waiting because they don’t think they stand a chance this year, I don’t know who they’re kidding. It’s fucking SpongeBob, no matter what season they premiere they don’t stand a chance against some other show either way. If I were them, I’d just take the risk THIS year, and if it ends up becoming this season’s (or next season’s) Tuck Everlasting underdog, then so be it. You can’t change the fact that your show is SpongeBob, it’s not going to be the next big thing like CATS. I honestly think though SpongeBob would be MUCH more relevant this year than next (even though we have no idea what will happen in 2018). Still, they had their out of town tryouts in Chicago right after the Orlando Shooting, and they didn’t plan that, it was just perfect timing, and the show felt 10x more relevant than it would if that didn’t happen. After the current elections, and now with all the bullshit going on, excuse my French, the show would be a perfect escapism right now, and it shares all the same themes with The Great Comet (as my friend Sarah put it, SpongeBob is the G-rated version of The Great Comet). Also, it would have been extremely exciting for Ethan Slater to make his Broadway debut at 24 alongside 22-year-old Ben Platt, Denee Benton, Christy Altomare, and some other kids close to his age.
But oh well, what can you do? I just hope SpongeBob, by the time it premieres, won’t be one year too late.

'Will you finish your career here?' - Loads of Middlesbrough fans want repeat of January move
Middlesbrough signed John Obi Mikel in January, with the experienced midfielder arriving at the Riverside Stadium following his release from Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Teda.
Mikel penned a contract with Boro until the end of the 2018-19 campaign and he has impressed for the club, making nine Championship appearances.
The Nigerian has seemingly been around forever, but he is just 31 years of age.
It seems unlikely that Boro will be able to keep him, particularly if they are unable to secure a return to the Premier League.
However, stranger things have happened and not too many would have backed Tony Pulis’ side to sign the former Chelsea midfielder in the first place.
Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…
The Boro fans want to know what is happening when it comes to Mikel’s future, though, with a number taking to social media on Wednesday to ask the very important question.
Even if it is just a repeat of the January deal, perhaps penning the Nigerian to the club for one more season, fans would love to see him stay, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…
