#pamechols #milwaukee #gloriarichardson #maryland #neverscared #resistant #blackhistorymonth Pam Echols of Milwaukee let that right hand go and held her purse. In the summer of 1967, July 30th to be exact there had been a fight between two women. There was already racial tension in the city, so when the police arrived and thought that they would smack some black folks around, they got a surprise. There was resistance. The next day there was a riot. The good ole captain thought that he was going to push another "gal" around and he ended up becoming the subject of a punch that's made an iconic pic. Gloria Richardson, Maryland's own, HU's own, which she attended at the age of 16 and graduated in 1942 with a degree in sociology. She was the fierce leader of the Cambridge Movement on the Eastern Shore. They were protesting the discrimination in Cambridge back in June 1963, their protest was met with violence and the National Guard had to be called out. Backing down wasn't an option for Gloria and her fellow protesters. Read up on her. Knowing of these real life soldiers, I can't see how anyone could be dumb enough to wear a shirt talking about we're not our grandparents. Unless you mean you're far more afraid than the people were back then.... https://www.instagram.com/p/B8rPllzBMfY/?igshid=qrrdxva7j2hc

Gloria Richardson, a firebrand civil rights activist who drew national attention in the early 1960s in a showdown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore that presaged the Black Power movement and led to a year-long imposition of martial law, died July 15 at her home in Manhattan. She was 99. Her daughter Tamara Richardson confirmed the death but did not give a cause. Ms. Richardson spent the past five decades in relative obscurity, having admittedly burned out after her front-line leadership role in Cambridge, Md. She left in 1964 and spent much of her life working on anti-poverty issues and programs for the aging in New York City. But for the three years in which Ms. Richardson galvanized protests against racial segregation and fought for economic justice for Cambridge’s 4,200 Black residents, she not only was a spearhead for civil rights in her community, but she also helped set off a national furor over the direction of the civil rights struggle. In particular, the uprising in Cambridge straddled a fault line between advocates for nonviolence, such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and more-extremist leaders such as Malcolm X, whom Ms. Richardson considered a friend and supporter. Calling herself “a radical, a revolutionary,” she also was reportedly one of few women leading a local civil rights protest movement at the time. Her embrace of all tactics — negotiations and force — did not go over well with mainstream civil rights groups and liberal-minded religious figures, who sometimes likened the militant approach to vigilantism. Ms. Richardson, then a 39-year-old divorced mother of two in Cambridge, emerged as an activist by happenstance. She came from a prosperous family ingrained in the community’s business life and political affairs. A grandfather had served decades on the town council representing an all-Black ward of Cambridge. Although she professed an initial fear of public speaking, she emerged as one of the country’s most unyielding voices for civil rights. #gloriarichardson #blackhistory #civilrights https://www.instagram.com/p/CRcd2K9Ful5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Gloria Richardson, July 20, 2017 - Gloria Richardson was born May 6, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland. During the Great Depression her parents moved the family to Cambridge, Maryland, the home of her mother, Mabel Hayes. Gloria Richardson is best known as the leader of the Cambridge movement, a civil rights struggle in Cambridge, Maryland in the early 1960s. This Richardson-led effort differed from most other civil rights campaigns of the era. It took place in a border state rather than the south, & was addressing a wider array of issues rather than the one or two that motivated other campaigns. It was amazing to hear her reflect about marching on Washington, hearing Malcolm X speak for the first time, & the importance of NOT leading a non-violent protest. She is a living history of Maryland. Governor Larry Hogan even acknowledged this by declaring, for the first time ever, February 11th as Gloria Richardson Day. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure no living person has ever had their own holiday/day of remembrance. This image is an outtake from an on-going #photoessay about the civil rights movement in Cambridge, MD. Starting off #BlackHistoryMonth off with the iconic picture of the iconic, uncompromising Gloria Richardson, who led the Cambridge Movement in the early 60s down in Cambridge, Maryland. Fearless in her demeanor, unapologetic in her approach, she stands as a shining example of not folding to oppressive forces. This picture is living praxis, not an asthetic! #BlackHistory365 #SNCC #GloriaRichardson #CambridgeMD #ExcuseMeCracka #WhatchuFinnaDoWithDatBayonet #NotADammThing #WhatchaPraxisLookinLike (at York College / CUNY)

Here's to Gloria Richardson: I'm learning about people I never heard of in history books and this beautiful woman came up. A woman who joined the movement, lead a portion of it, refused to accept the status quo, was silenced by the people who were supposed to support her, and yet still here she is going viral with her actions alone. I hope we have learned from our predecessors in the fight for human rights, to appreciate every voice in the movement and to never take a single one for granted. #gloriarichardson #blackgirlmagic #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #oldpic #history #voice #humanrights #actions #words #voice #truth #past #igpic #photooftheday #picoftheday #igdaily #instadaily #silence #civilrightsmovement #crm #progress #strength #boldness #power #unity
