Speaking of crossover ships between different Soulsborne games, which one(s) do you guys like if any? There are some more apparent ones like shipping iconic female bosses together, and iirc Malenia x Gwynevere became popular, stuff like this! Or some characters in a crossover ship being a similar trope? Or maybe you have a completely obscure ones? Or based not on similarities but on personal headcanons? Or even a joke/crack ship? I love how The Soulsborne games deal with fucked up characters. Because they have some of the most disgusting characters but they give them interesting backstories/motives. I like how we can see why/how they became what we see them as now.

Hello hello! I saw your designs for Dores and Custodio via Kat's renditions, and I really like the way you've designed them. It suits their occupations and what little we know of them. Dores seems tough as nails while Custodio exudes a high-strung energy. I am interested in how you came up with their designs, if you are open to sharing

Helloooo! Thank you for the compliments on the designs, I am really proud of how they come out all things considered! They were so good even Kat couldn't help but accept them as her headcanons ahahah.

The fun about these designs is that they just kinda came to me in the middle of a Summer day. I got a pencil out and started doodling the rough sketches for their face. And I settled on the first attempt! I was really impressed with how quickly I seemed to grasp their concept at least. Dores gave me this idea of mysterious unhinged person, with their mask being the scalp of a Pthumerian face. I really tried to lean into the angle of someone who really doesn't care about scars or burn marks, and perhaps even enjoys them a little. Custodio I imagined to be slightly kinder-looking compared to Dores or even Willem and Gehrman, but mostly to make him look out of place with all these other important figures. Though looks can be deceiving since this guy accompanied Willem and Dores in the dungeons himself. He must have had a bit of fight in him too. His more high-strung side came from his almost-stuttering and broken speech pattern in the game. Poor guy must have seen a lot of things he most likely wasn't ready for, unlike Willem and even Dores to a lesser extent.

At the time I did not know Dores could have been a woman, but we found out the design could easily be changed into one with just a slight fix to the eyes. I can say that the design was great if you can easily salvage basically most of it! @katyahina has been a big help in finalizing the designs, and it's what I also use as a reference nowadays.

As you can see, the initial ideas were all there, they just got better with time! And now I can't help but love these very obscure and underrated goobers. I think they were good friends despite how different they were. (and how much Dores loved to annoy the heck out of poor gatekeeper Custodio ahah)

Since you said it's ok to send you random ask, i've always found your "monsters" design to be really really gorgeous, and I wanted to know : in any form of media you've interacted with, what's PEAK monster design for you ?

i have been thinking about this ask alot bc ... i dont ... know? theres a problem with what counts as a monster really too, most are either some sort of anthro/furry or the horror gore type of monster that instills you more with disgust than awe

i guess theres some i really like but idk if thats what id call 'peak' (though its rarely JUST the design but their vibe and stuff too);

Eldra, Farodra and Naydra (engl Dinraal, Farosh(?)) though Eldra is def my fav one of them, i like how they are a little more less typical dragon- with the fur around the neck the floppy ears and kinda goofy face yet manage to be the most ethereal, awe inspiring creature i have ever seen in a game with how they act and are presented as (in BOTW!!! do not mention anythign sonau/zonai with stupid magic pebbles to me about them i will manifest worms into your tea)

Leunen (Lynels) (botw) -i could not find a better picture wtf, fav are white and silver ones) FINE they had some pretty neat new horn designs in totk- idk i just like them alot, rather simple if you think about it, horse lion plus horns- but its so well put together it just kinda scratches my brain in a good way (also how intelligent they clearly are, like the way they fight and act and also even their death animation is so??? huh?? you are just gonna treat them like any other mindless monste- *remmbers they treat ganondorf even even worse all things considered* .. nevermind you're good)

'Beast' Ganondorf (twilight princess) its my favorite beast ganon design (even if it technically is just kinda a man boar .. again) though if ww gan had a non puppet beast form that one would most definitely be my fav lol (i will not get over the fact that some descriptions call this a hideous beast EXCUSE ME???? WHERE???) (honorable mention here, darkbest ganon from botw, pig on fire but it looks cool as fuck)

Nimbusgarde (ww) .. (engl .. darknuts?) do i need to say anything? (i could throw alot of ww design here) not sure if it counts as monster but they are not human so ????

the pathless bosses- (here in order, Cernos, the Godslayer, and Kumo) all of them are rad as hell (except for the final version of the godslayer ... liek im sorry but it looks to boring compared to any other one lol) again not just the design but man do i love them

since i dont know what would count as a monster or no i could just list my fav characters here bfmjbfmjsbmj like radahn (elden ring) is just kinda a zombie, aurelion sol (league of legends) is a space dragon, the forest god in princess mononoke, Narisha (skyward sword- sky whale)- i could go on but this post is long already (honorable mention to Omus in nausicäa, weird bugs but also something divine, though it is much more how they are treated and the vibe etc)

in all honesty though i cant think of one that i would describe as perfect, what i want of a monster design is to be ... cool but also a little weird, big hulking monsters that have something off about them and something that makes them 'other', but also not, as much as i like bloodborne, just bloody gory messes of rotting flesh, AND not just as a monster to kill, i just crave a game or otherwiese piece of media where the cool monsters arent just there for you to kill- the perfect one i guess would be something kinda big scary weird and off but while non verbal clearly not a mindless beast?

and here is the thing; my own characters do not furfill that, my designs are really rather conservative, much to my dismay, anthro of a mix of animals, maybe an extra arm thrown in- Eadrya, one of my favorites, is really just a blueish furry (yes they have fur) and their demon form is a mix of seals and catfish with some extra arms, too many teeth and a mouth that goas wayy to far (if they want) - Shargon is a feather dude with extra arms and his demon form is really just a chinese type dragon crossed with a bird, throw some darts at the color wheel, done

together with my problem of my monster characters losing their 'otherness' vibe within the story rather fast bc the majority of my characters are non human and speak and you see them in all sorts of emotions and parts of life- they lose that divine, unknown vibe and i HATE that that happens, i want them more akin to the forest god in mononoke but thats not possible unless i start from scratch

and i really dont mean to make myself look bad to sound self depre- ... however you spell that; i really am rather dissatisfied with my own designs but mostly just roll with what i got bc i never seem to be able to actually achieve what i want

even my redesigns often really make things LESS interesting (unless maybe the og was just ... human, but they are blue eyed with golden hair and white so that makes them divine you seE-), the skyward sword dragons as i redesigned them made them much more classical dragon, in part intentional bc i was drawing a connection of them becoming the botw dragons at some point, but by all means the canon design is much more weird and unusual than what i did with them, you could apply the same to even demise, his canon design might seem a little uninspired but really what did i do? inject him with some classic satan spice like that makes it in any way less stereotypical evil demon ??? lol

im sorry this post devolved into whatever this is but i really am trying to answer sincerely, i am confused about it myself, what counts as a monster, what doesnt, there must be more that i really loved but why cant i think of them, why do i design characters like this when i really want something much more different, i dont know, i feel like my brain is in a cage, why do i keep making things less interesting in an effort to make it interesting, am i falling into the corporate trap of cool sells who am i what am i doing

(theres a zelda artist with a style so strikingly genuis in shape, color and just .. DESIGN that i want to chew my nails off bc i cannot design like them, their designs and redesigns are so different yet sensical and so full of crisp shapes i have never seen before it drives me nuts and i would want to give them a shoutout but i think they dont like me so aaaaarhekjbfhgdknbgdfklbg)

Moonchild-in-blue: The blues and purples!! Opals and the insides of muscle shells inspired me a lot with the coloring (particularly the stars and moon). There’s another shell that has that shiny blue and green lining on the inside but I can’t remember the name of it. It was a full moon last night but I forgot to take a picture! Thought of you but anyways I loved coloring the lady. It was fun but I first I struggled on deciding if I wanted more blue or purple.

A-s-levynn: More Dark Sun Gwyndolin inspiration… (you can tell I have my dark souls art books open next to me right now). As requested, tendrils/tentacles were added! I think it improved the design a whole lot because it was originally very symmetrical and the tentacles added just the right amount of asymmetry to balance out the overall look. I’m a huge fromsoft fan (playing Elden Ring, waiting for new DLC, have dark souls 1 remastered but haven’t started it yet, have bloodborne Elden ring and DS1/3 art books) so lots of my art has elements from Fromsoft games (neutron activation).

a while ago there was a blodoborne lore guy who i was like "ugh! this guy doesnt know what hes talking about!" over some statues he argued were depicting people looking up at an unknown astrological event but now i think he is kinda right. after watching the shetani's lair video, which argues pretty convincingly that a meteor severed the "divine realm" from the rest of the world of sekiro.

like, first of all: fromsoft loves to repeat itself. if something has appeared once in a game, its probably appeared prior or will appear again. they love to iterate on a theme over there. they also love to lightly reference japanese cultural knowledge that is lost on my dumb ass. but prior to this, the importance of an external, extraterrestrial force flying in and suddenly up-heaving the balance of the known world had not occurred to me.

in bloodborne, this is explicitly referenced but in the classic fromsoft "saying without REALLY saying it" way: the burial blade and the blade of mercy were forged from meteoric iron. oh my fucking god are you kidding me right now. sorry i just did a google search and realized something else lol. fuck hold on. look i can't find like a plain english wiki page about forging swords with meteoric iron in japan so youll have to take it from this nasa abstract. it was an uncommon practice due to scarcity and i think the swords kind of suck lol. however, the thing about iron from space is that its magnetic, which is how the first "trick weapons" operated: the blade of mercy is two blades magnetized together and the burial blade is just a magnet that flicks loose.

dude what in the hell. i have learned so much useless shit from this game. okay: japan wasnt the only nation to forge with iron meteorites; the indian (esoteric buddhism/shugendo/vajrayana buddism is also a recurring theme, for real) kris is famous not only for it's uncommon snake-y shape (....snakes are also a recurring theme) but the patterning of the metal, called pamor. this unique pattern is achieved by use of meteoric iron during the forging process.

now look at the weapons used by the ancient race of pthumerians

Some Elden Ring final thoughts!

I can't stop thinking about the Elden Beast fight. There, you don't feel this adrenaline rush of acknowledging your own power in battle and the fact that you can bring down a demigod. It feels more...sterile? I can't find the word.

I love how in ER they've mixed the ideas of knight ship and valour with a basic biological cycle where the strongest wins. And the Elden Beast fight feels this way. You just have to fight another being in the food chain to take its place. But also in the process you're in awe, bc this being is otherworldly. But also this fight is...stripped of emotions for me? The beast is neither good nor bad. It's just...there.

I still have mixed feelings about its design and appearance, but I love this confusion, bc it makes sense. It's a being we're not meant to understand. It reminds me of some implications in BB that the Great Ones aren't that GREAT. And when it takes only a second for it to transform Radagon into a sword...a good glimpse into its power.

Still not sure what ending I like the most! Hilde is very empathetic, and I feel like she will make banishing the Outer Gods from these lands her main priority. And as much as I like Ranni's ending, I feel like it's a bit too distant for her. The Golden Order one feels more right in terms of her personality, tho it has a vibe of possible Tyranny. So maybe a standard ending will suit her the best. Have to think about it and how I want to interpret everything.

I also love how in the soundtrack, Yuka Kitamura once again was inspired by Gustav Holst and his "Planets" piece. The Astel ost resembles "Saturn, Bringer of Old Age (here's the link)" the same way as in Bloodborne, The Living Failures OST resembles "Mars, the Bringer of War". "Planets" is my fav classic music piece and I love how its motif fit Soulsborne universes. It gives such an eerie quality to all cosmic related themes in Elden Ring.
