This Day in History: Remember the Alamo!
On this day in 1836, a group of Texans hold their ground during a siege at the Alamo. That siege and the battle that followed were among the most pivotal events of the Texas Revolution.
Only a day earlier, on February 23, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna had arrived at the Alamo with his army. That army badly outnumbered the Texans (then called Texians). There were only about 200 men defending the Alamo.
The Alamo’s commander, William B. Travis, sent messengers pleading for help. Couriers were apparently able to slip past the Mexican forces until at least March 3, but maybe even as late as March 5. (The Mexican army was building earthworks around the Alamo, which were meant to cut off the Texians from reinforcements. The couriers could get through while these earthworks were incomplete.)
“I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours,” Travis wrote on the 24th, “& have not lost a man . . . . I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid . . . . If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country — Victory or Death.”
Unfortunately, Travis’s letters were to no avail. Help was on the way, but few of these reinforcements were able to arrive in time—only 32 extra men arrived on March 1.

This Day in History: The Battle of the Alamo
On this day in 1836, the Battle of the Alamo is fought. Despite a valiant defense by the Texans (then called Texians), the Mexican Army is victorious.
Okay, so I already discussed the long siege and battle a few days ago. But can you ever really say too much about Texas?! Ha. 😉 So, in that spirit, here are some random facts that you may not know about the Alamo.
When Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived at the Alamo, he sent a courier with a demand that the Texians surrender. Do you want to take one wild guess as to how the Texians responded? They responded with a cannonball! The Texas spirit was born early, wasn’t it?! 😉
Three famous figures were killed at the Battle of the Alamo: William B. Travis, Jim Bowie, and Davy Crockett. Travis was defending the north wall of the Alamo when he was killed, early in the battle, by a shot to the head. Bowie probably died in the Low Barrack. He was ill and confined to bed when the battle started. Crockett’s death is more of a mystery. He either died during battle or he was executed by Santa Anna afterwards.

Why The Pro Life Movement Needs to Kick It up a Notch
Some times you need to jump start the wheels of progress because lives are at stake. Imagine if the people of Germany had just worked peacefully trying to use the system to oust Hitler. Millions more would have died. There are too many lives at stake to just “wait for the wheels of progress.” Because every day we do that thousands of helpless lives are ended. If that isn’t enough for you to say “We the people need to fix this.” Then nothing is. And you and others like you will end up as slaves of a evil and worldly government.
