San Merido - Part Four

Suzy walked down the boulevard, shopping bags in hand and sunglasses on her face. She was wearing a smart jacket and skirt combination and looked the height of fashion. She passed the large Western Savings Bank on her left. It was still closed and Suzy knew it would be weeks before they could scrape all of the blood and body parts from inside and around the bank. The heist a week ago had been daring but an incredible success.

It had made national news and there had been a huge uproar at how the bandits could so mercilessly kill the police and get away without a trace. The faces of Justin Fellows, the leader of the local FBI special taskforce on organised crime, and Regional Director Frank Galloway had been plastered over the front of the papers as they continued to fail to come up with answers.

'What a bunch of suckers' Suzy thought. The task force had been reeling ever since she killed one of its lead detectives a while ago. Helen was keeping the group agile, constantly changing their locations to bamboozle their enemies who were stuck in their old ways and routines. Their network of informers was growing and their businesses were becoming more established. Just two days ago they had opened their first underground club and Helen had organised investments in grocery stores, cafes, restaurants and more all across the city, all with female proprietors.

The group had been carrying out more hits too. Suzy passed the downtown theatre. Three days ago she knew Nellie and a new recruit called Daisy had snuck in and slashed the throats of Tino Carbone, a nephew in the family and two bodyguards in their box during a performance before disappearing without a trace. Meanwhile Annie had posed as a taxi driver, picking up Carlo Berlucci, Benito Berlucci's brother, and took him out of the city for an execution in the forests with her Tommy gun.

Suzy was keen to find out about her next job. She had not killed anyone since the bank heist and her trigger finger was getting itchy. She had spent the last few nights cleaning her gun and loading some drums with ammunition in anticipation of what more was to come. She continued walking with her shopping, eventually popping down an alleyway and into a newly-constructed hotel.

It's art deco interior was impressive and a great work of art, with white and gold marble all across the place. Suzy stopped for a moment to look at it. The design was impressive. Unbeknownst to the owners, Helen Monroe also had a permanent booking for one of the suites and a female receptionist winked at Suzy as she entered. She slid Suzy a key as she walked to the desk and Suzy took it without saying a word.

She took the elevator to the 11th floor of the building and opened the door to one of the hotel room suites. She found herself in a large sitting room and recognised Maggie, wearing a plain dress and already talking to Helen who as always was in her pinstriped suit with a black shirt and white tie. They were sipping coffee together.

"Ah Suzy, come on in" Helen said, rising and kissing Suzy on the cheek, "I know you've been anxious to make some more use of your talents".

"Hell yeah" she said, "just give me something to aim at boss". She looked across at Maggie. The young brunette was also looking hungry for some action. Suzy had not seen much of her in action yet but had heard promising things from Nellie after she had helped shoot up a golf course and kill a state senator.

"How about four targets at once?" Helen asked. Suzy smiled and sat to listen to the schemes of her boss. "We have four main enemies in this city, the Berlucci's, the Carbone's, the cops and the FBI. So far we've had successful hits on one, or maybe two at the same time, but never all four at once".

"Sure" Suzy said, "getting all four in the same place at the same time is...well, it's challenging, right?"

"It is" Helen agreed, "but ultimately the power brokers in all of these entities are men, and do you know what men all want? It's not power, it's not money, it's an instinct far more basic than that".

"Oh my god" Suzy exclaimed, as it hit her, "sex!" She looked at Maggie and grinned. "I mean, there's nothing wrong with that of course".

Helen chuckled. "But it also presents an opportunity" she said, "there is a high-class brothel down near the docks that has a guest list that includes a couple of members of the FBI task force, some cops and members of both gangs. I've known about it for a while and we have a couple of the working girls informing for us".

"Wow" Suzy said, but then she frowned, "but if we've known for a while, why haven't we hit it before?"

"Have you ever seen a solar eclipse?" Helen asked. Suzy shook her head. She had read about it but never seen a full eclipse in real life. "It's a beautiful phenomenon" Helen told her, "you have these different objects, all moving in different orbits, all at different paces but every once in a while they all align perfectly". She lit a cigar and smoked it. "Tomorrow night is our eclipse. Three objects of intense value will all collide in the brothel at the same time. Nico Carbone, Gianni Berlucci and Gerry Marshall will all be in the brothel at the same time".

Suzy and Maggie both looked at each other, stunned. Nico Carbone and Gianni Berlucci were the eldest sons of their families, second in stature only to their fathers, Benito Berlucci and Andrea Carbone. Gerry Marshall was a very visible Deputy Commissioner within the San Merido police force, although no-one knew whether he was loyal to the Berlucci family, the Carbone family or both.

"It's not going to be easy" Helen said, "that place will be locked down tight with muscle but we can sneak a couple of women in if they can look the part". She looked at Suzy. "You think you have an outfit or two that might suit?"

Suzy grinned. "Maybe one or two". She was famous in the group for enjoying her fine lingerie and had no doubt she could sneak into the brothel and from within, cause absolute chaos.

"Good" Helen said, "the women all get auctioned off in a room so there's a chance to get them all together at the same time and take them out. You and Maggie will have your chance. Take it. We take out the three targets and a venue the FBI have been targeting". The three huddled together and Suzy started noting down the finer details of the plan and how they might carry it out.

The large dressing room in the discreet downtown house was buzzing with activity. Suzy and Maggie kept themselves in the corner, standing next to Paulette. The young French immigrant had let them in via the back way to the house where the brothel was stationed and introduced them to the surly manager and owner of the establishment, Mademoiselle Noir. Unlike the immigrant, the Mademoiselle was not French, but she put on an accent for clients in order to make them feel like the brothel was a classy and elegant affair.

According to Paulette, business had been good in recent weeks and the Mademoiselle was looking for more working girls. She merely asked to see a peek under Suzy and Maggie's long coats before telling them to go and get ready, instructing Paulette to look after them. She had not even remarked that Suzy and Maggie were both carrying violin cases.

Suzy was happy - their cover was safe for now. She had picked out a fashionable and sexy black brassiere made with sheer black silk that gave a hint of her breasts underneath and a tight garter belt that came up over her stomach and held up dark brown stockings on each leg.

Suzy chuckled. "I know. Too bad we can't hide all the extra bullets inside our garter belts". They needed to time their attack well. They wanted to catch a lot of the VIPs by surprise but at the same time would not be able to reload as easily as usual and between the three main targets and their bodyguards, 100 bullets might not stretch as far as they needed. They both had their jackets with useful pockets in the violin cases along with spare ammunition for their Tommy guns but could not take those on stage without raising suspicions.

After a few more minutes, Mademoiselle Noir appeared, wearing an elegant dress. "OK ladies, let's go!" she said, and the half-dozen women in the room started to file out and follow her towards the back of the stage area that was in the living room of the house, all the upstairs rooms having been converted to bedrooms for use by the patrons. Suzy and Maggie stayed at the back of the group, subtly picking up their violin cases and moving with them.

"Hey Paulette" Suzy whispered to the French girl in front of her, "you know we got plenty of openings in our group for you and the others...".

"With 'elen?" Paulette whispered back, turning round. She was wearing a tight ivory-coloured corset.

"Sure" Suzy said, "when the shooting starts, some of the men are going to drop their guns. Grab them and help us shoot this place up".

Paulette considered the offer for a couple of seconds. "OK", she said, "I'll do it, I'll spread the word amongst the other girls".

Suzy smiled. She knew tonight would be the start of more gainful and rewarding employment for the women. Instead of being paid by men for their pleasure, they would reverse the stakes, getting paid for their own pleasure of killing the men. It was a nice and handy turnaround.

Backstage, Suzy and Maggie placed their violin cases behind the curtain through which they would emerge. She could already smell the cigarettes and cigars being burned from the audience on the other side as Mademoiselle Noir made her way through and began addressing the men, welcoming them to her establishment and explaining the bidding process.

Maggie took a peek round the side of the curtain and beckoned Suzy over. "They're here!" she said excitedly, "the Deputy Commissioner, Gianni Berlucci, Nico Carbone, all three. Just like Helen said".

Suzy did not doubt it but stole a glance herself. The three men were the centre of attention in the room, sitting in large armchairs. They politely nodded at one another and Suzy noticed the cordial atmosphere. Each had their own two guards and there were more businessmen and other gentlemen of the city in the room. It reminded Suzy why they were doing this - for progress. Every market needed disruption when the supposed rivals were this cosy and they would provide exactly that.

Mademoiselle Noir finished her speech and some music played from a gramophone in the room. The first woman in the queue behind the stage stepped on. She was wearing a white brassiere and garter belt. Suzy saw the three VIPs nodding but not cheering or whooping as one or two of the other businessmen in the room did. It was clear they felt they were above the general commotion in the room. The bidding eventually finished at $35 and a man in a grey suit took the woman upstairs. Suzy studied the guards behind the Deputy Commissioner and the two sons. They were all just wearing simple suit jackets, good for concealing pistols but nothing heavier. That would make her life easier.

Another woman fetched $42 before she was taken by a different businessman but bidding really started fast with a fetching blonde lady who looked made up like a movie star. Gianni Berlucci entered the bidding with a $40 offer, looking the woman up and down as if she were a creature he was studying. He eventually bid $60 to win her and kissed her hand as Mademoiselle Noir presented him with the woman. Suzy noted that they would be upstairs. This always had the potential to happen but if the other two could keep downstairs then hers and Maggie's lives would be easier.

Paulette should have been next but Suzy whispered to her. "Let me go next," she said urgently. She wanted to get a good feel of the room and then start executing the plan. "Hey, how high do you think I can drive the bidding?" Suzy asked Maggie.

"50 bucks" she said.

"I'm going to get three figures" Suzy said, a twinkle in her eye, "just be ready". She walked through the curtain and onto the stage and knew every eye in the room was on her. The lights were dimly lit but she could still see Deputy Commissioner Marshall in the middle of the room and Nico Carbone to her left, still sat in tall armchairs.

"Shall we start ze bidding at $20?" Mademoiselle Noir said in her fake French accent. There was immediately a shout from a man, followed by another "25!", and then "30!".

Suzy had not quite got the Deputy Commissioner and Nico involved yet. She sauntered forward on the stage with her long legs. She raised a gloved hand to the sky and then ran it down across her neck. "40!" a man called. "45!" Another man outbid him. Suzy pretended to not hear or encourage them and instead continued to move her hand over her chest and towards the sheer silk of her brassiere. Suzy turned and fixed him with an intense stare. She ran her hands over her breasts again, knowing she was driving every red-blooded man in the room wild with desire. Mademoiselle Noir came through the curtain. Their magazines finished and the room looked like it was full of destruction. Men panted on the floor, some crawling, some shouting in pain, others just bleeding quietly to death. Maggie ducked behind the curtain and threw Suzy a new magazine. She loaded it quickly and fired again. Paulette nodded and walked into the main room. She walked to a bodyguard and picked up their pistol from their shoulder holster. BAM! She fired into the man's skull. “Ok, let’s go” Suzy said, reloading her Tommy gun just in case there was any trouble. The woman followed her and Maggie, and along the way out of the building they picked up the other former prostitutes and led them out to the street.

Outside they saw two cars with Annie and Daisy standing by them, holding their Tommy guns. The barrels were smoking and Suzy saw they had wasted four men outside who had been standing guard, the bloody corpses of the men in suits testament to their colleagues' work. They all got in the cars and sped away.

“Fuck, that was so good!” Maggie exclaimed next to Suzy in the back of their car that Annie was driving.

“Yep” Annie agreed, “and the best part is we’re nowhere near done with this yet. I’ve been talking to Helen and the next part of the plan is incredible. Just wait and see!”

Suzy sat back and grinned. San Merido would not know what was about to hit it, and the mere thought of what was possibly to come was already teasing her with pleasure.

#6 The near death experience

Checking out is probably the worst part of the travelling life at the moment, because you check out at 8am but need to be organised enough to have you day pack ready for the day adventure and your belongings for the overnight train later in the night - but you will also use the communal shower prior to that, so bag organisation is an effort!! The bus left at 8.30am and Elias (Norway) joined the lobby at 8.28am, well timed. We made our way through the city and out to the mountain where the roads were as windy and bumpy as they come. Think great ocean road x2 with a billion pot holes. However, when we got to the location, it was actually quite resort-y! We were not expecting that! Naively, nor was I expecting the 10cm jungle spider outside the bathroom window (without glass). Definitely in the jungle now! We had a 3 mins safety demonstration for the Zipline, jumped in the golf buggy and we were away - plenty safe so far.. The Zipline was actually great! There were about ten lines through the rainforest with a few climbing obstacles also. Easy enough for sure. Safe enough for sure. We sat down to what felt like a private lunch in the rainforest with chicken and rice, a small soup and drinks. It was actually lovely getting my to know Elias better, at 20 on his first solo venture. His mum lives in the Arctic circle, on an island above Norway, where he also did high school. He said they love snowmobiling out there for fun, however noted you must take a rifle because of the polar bears and be wary of the glacial cracks that you can plummet down.. Ek, okay! Within the first 100m, I had used the brakes on an inclined hill (which is an error but the person in front was going to slow!) and started slipping backwards toward the edge - which was a drop covered into Vietnamese jungle and god knows what animals. Slightly nervy, but continuing on. The roads were carved out with valleys where the water had ran down the mountain, and the inclines were really quite steep! Whilst I pushed on, the guide helped me on two occasions because I was actually terrified to do it alone and roll the quad bike. Anywho, there are few photos of that experience, because I was essentially holding on for dear life the entire time! But - made it back in one piece, phew! Actually a close call on about three counts. Back in the reception area, the bus was an hour off so we went down to the waterfalls for a swim. Without bathers, underwear it was! The water was clear, but I only had a quick dip and attempted to dry off for the bus. That and the jungle has taken enough of me today, I don’t need to be eaten by anything in the water! Heading back, I was so glad I went on that adventure. I nearly didn’t, as I thought I was going to be alone as Elias booked late, but it was a great day! One that sharing to the rest of the group later was a fun tale, I’m just glad we came out unscathed! Vietnamese jungle 1 - Lis 0. Back at the hostel, we wandered for Greek Gyros for dinner and I showered (read, ran cold water over my body and the sweated up a storm whilst attempting to get dressed, so ‘shower’ is a loose term) and got organised for the overnight train. The days have been busy! With little place to base ourselves of late, and heading into our second overnight train, fatigue is setting in! I’m thankful my sleeping ability is excellent, but an afternoon nap might be in order tomorrow. Hoi Anh, you beautiful lantern covered city, we are coming for you!

Hovland was not able to take advantage as Viktor had a dissapointing final round of two over to finish in a tie for 4th. Smith trailed McIlroy by two shots going into the back nine. Smith started on fire as he found his putting touch on the greens to put together a superb run of five birdies in a row to jump to the top of the leaderboard on 19 under after 14 holes. McIlroy lost his putting touch as he failed to birdie the short 12th and a three putt for par on the par 5 14th. Smith was one ahead with four to go. Smith managed pars on 15th and 16th but an unbelievable two putt for par on the famous 17th put one hand on the trophy for Smith. McIlroy knew that he needed to play the last two holes in two under and set up a 20 foot putt for birdie on the 17th, the crowd were willing the ball towards the hole but it unfortunately missed by a couple of roles. Smith's birdie on the 18th capped off an excellent final round of 64 to finish on 20 under. McIlroy putted from short of the green on 18th and gave it a healthy run to try tie 20 under but it didn't reach the target resulting in Smith been crowned 2022 Open Champion. To make things worse for McIlroy, Cameron Young eagled the 18th to finish one shot ahead of McIlroy in second place. 150th Open was a brillant success at St Andrews with Smith been a well deserved Open Champion. Finally it was a pity that the morning after the final round we were not talking about Smith's fantastic birdie run and it was all about who are the latest players to join the LIV Tour.

10th June Platinum Jubilee Celebration Party

Well, some 40 odd members, carers and families turned up at the Golf Road Community Centre to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and didn’t they have an excellent time with everything possible laid on by the organising team of Roger, Diane, Louise and Andy, with some of the items of food being prepared w3ell into the night, especially those sausage rolls made by Roger and some managed to fid their way into quite a few doggy bags. Food first, with extra delicious sandwiches, washed down with copious amounts of apple, orange and lemon juice, followed by a selection of cakes and biscuits with tea and coffee and the loyal toast, naval style, taken whilst seated. A word search puzzle, a picture quiz and a 30 question quiz, all related to her majesty’s 70 years reign.

Finally a word of praise for all the hard work and effort put in by the two families and a strange raffle without any tickets or money changing hands.
