One Giant Leap - Part I

This is a silly yet angsty one-shot in the Hallmark by Knight universe that combines an idea @vicarious-rebel and I had kicked around with Jake being the one to finally tell Jack about the system's DID. This isn't how it will go down in HbK canon. It's an AU to the AU, if you will.

Jack frowned on his perch atop the Giant Dipper, the old wooden rollercoaster he hadn’t ridden since the whole family had visited Belmont Park when he and Lissa were teenagers. Mostly to distract from his urge to help Marc, he said through his balaclava to the mic clipped on his T-shirt, “Bebé, this isn’t natural.” 

The spiky creature the size of a tractor trailer got its webbed feet under itself as Moon Knight, grass-stained and soaked from fighting in Bonita Cove, flew straight at it. A Bluetooth earpiece carried Marc’s reply. “YA THINK?!?” 

Marc slammed into the beast, sending both of them into the miniature windmill of an already mostly trashed mini-golf course. Authorities had evacuated the area an hour earlier, when the monster had lumbered out of the Pacific. One of Marc’s contacts had alerted him, which immediately changed their plans for the day.

“Frogs can’t tolerate salt water,” Jack informed his partner, who probably wasn’t listening because the giant frog had wrapped its long tongue around him. “Bebé! Let me—”

“No!” Marc cried as he took to the air again despite his pinned arms. The tongue pulled taut but held, pulling a thrashing Moon Knight toward its gaping maw. “Stay safe!”

Finally! Jack thought, half sliding and half climbing down the ladder he’d used to get to the rollercoaster’s peak. “Stay safe” had a lot more wiggle room than “Stay there.” Although Khonshu would bring Marc back from death, Jack wasn’t about to stand back and watch his partner die if he could intervene.

The earpiece carried increasingly frantic cries as Jack neared the bottom of the ladder with his back turned to the fight in progress. With twenty feet left to go, Jack pushed off the ladder, twisting around in mid-air and hoping to find Marc breaking free.

The monster’s wide mouth snapped shut on white cape as Jack’s feet hit the ground. Wet, stomach-turning noises replaced Marc’s screams. 

Jack's wolf side roused, furious and lethal, and he found himself at a dead run aimed at the predator. His halves had reached an unspoken agreement: his human mind was needed to save his mate. If that was unsuccessful, he’d bite and slash and kill as the wolf.

With forty feet between him and his target, Jack jumped a custodian’s cart, grabbing a broom along the way. The broom head was useless, but the handle could skewer the monster’s eyes.

Twenty feet.

The huge amphibian turned and trudged east, toward the cove’s sandy shore.

Holding the broom overhead, Jack leaped while roaring as best he could with human vocal cords. A similar cry sounded in his ear—one he hadn’t heard since the Tecate mission—as the wooden pole pierced a tire-sized eyeball. Then the frog’s enormous webbed foot lashed out and Jack was hurtling backwards. He hit the ground hard and rolled.

With the gory sounds of a brawl straight out of a horror movie in his ear, Jack looked up to find the frog writhing from something within. 

The sound of blood rushing in his ears nearly swamped out what he heard from the earpiece. He murmured, “Bebé?”

The frog’s mouth opened and poured out blood.

“Más o menos,” Marc gasped.

Half of a gold crescent blade jabbed through the creature’s flesh and slashed a wide arc. The frog bellowed as blood and bile flowed, then collapsed.

The wireless earpiece carried Marc’s panting and swearing in Spanish as he pushed through the cut he’d made through the monster.

Beaming, Jack rushed up to him, wishing he could take off his balaclava and Marc could remove his bloody cowl and mask. Although no people were around, surveillance cameras surely were, not to mention the helicopters and drones overhead.

“Corazón,” Jack sighed as he wrapped his arms around his partner despite the ichor. Marc’s hug seemed hesitant; he must be injured. 

Jack let go and took a step back, noticing how the suit’s mask and some of the linen wrappings were now black instead of their usual white. Chuckling, he said, “Being swallowed by a giant frog inspired a new look?”

Billowing from the vehicle were three flags: one for the Trump campaign, two others with the initials “PB” – the insignia of the far-right Proud Boys movement. Through the open windows, three Proud Boys flashed the “OK” sign with their hands, a gesture often associated with white supremacy and the far right. Trump’s fans cheered. Four men dressed in the signature black-and-yellow shirts of the Proud Boys spilled out of the SUV and began glad-handing the crowd like homecoming heroes. The Proud Boys are back. Four years after the failed effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 electoral defeat, the violent all-male extremist group that led the storming of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, is rebuilding and regaining strength as Trump campaigns to return to the White House, according to interviews with eight Proud Boys, two U.S. law enforcement officials and four experts who track the group’s online activity.

Since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, four former Proud Boys leaders have been convicted in federal court of seditious conspiracy, each sentenced to 15 or more years in prison. At least another 70 members were charged with participating in the violence. But that crackdown hasn’t stopped the Proud Boys. Some Proud Boys say they are preparing to emerge once again as a physical force for Trump, drawn to his hardline nationalism and convinced their leaders will be pardoned if he wins. The group’s main Telegram channel, however, posted a message urging Proud Boys to stay calm and not get drawn into a trap and risk arrest. “Trump is, of course, getting railroaded but we will not be walking into any honey pots over this.” In recent weeks, the group has become more prominent at pro-Trump events, highlighting the risk of renewed violence in this year’s presidential election. Dozens of Proud Boys – some in body armor and helmets – marked the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection with a show of force at the statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. On April 20, nearly a dozen gathered at a rally for Trump’s Republican campaign in Wilmington, North Carolina.  More recently, groups of Proud Boys from two chapters mixed with tens of thousands of Trump supporters at a campaign rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, in May.

On a boardwalk near the entrance of the Wildwood rally, several Proud Boys identified themselves as members of the “New Jersey State” chapter. One said they were there to provide security and stop agitators from “disrespecting or assaulting everybody.” Inscribed on his wraparound sunglasses were the initials “POYB” – short for “Proud of Your Boy.” He wore a ring with the initials “PB” and a black shirt with the yellow laurel wreath of the Proud Boys. Three men from another chapter greeted them, their faces hidden by gaiter masks. The re-emergence of the Proud Boys at Trump’s political rallies and events coincides with polls showing a majority of Americans fearing political violence will flare around November’s election. It also comes when Trump’s use of incendiary rhetoric is inspiring his supporters to target his opponents – including judges, prosecutors and political rivals – in a wave of threats that’s unprecedented in modern American politics.

Trump himself has not ruled out the possibility of political violence if he loses in November. “If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” he said when asked by Time magazine in April if he expected violence after the election. If he’s jailed or put under house arrest, “I’m not sure the public would stand for it,” he said in a Fox News interview that aired on Sunday. “At a certain point there’s a breaking point.” Before the last election, Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.” Three months later, federal prosecutors say, the group’s leaders plotted and led the insurrection of the U.S. Capitol. Trump’s baseless, rigged-election claims inspired the gathering, and Trump himself urged the assembled crowd to march on the Capitol as Congress certified Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.

A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to questions for this story about his rhetoric, Jan. 6 and the Proud Boys. As the Proud Boys regroup, they’ve made changes designed to make them less vulnerable to law enforcement scrutiny, including doing away with layers of top leadership, according to interviews with members. The Proud Boys now operate with self-governing chapters in more than 40 states, with little apparent central coordination, members said. While the group’s structure has changed, its Canadian founder remains an inspirational figure to today’s Proud Boys. Gavin McInnes, a British-born far-right commentator who lives in New York, announced his resignation from the Proud Boys in 2018. But he remains deeply involved with the group, according to interviews with Proud Boys.

After McInnes stepped down, his successor, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, raised the Proud Boys’ profile, pulling them from the fringe of the far-right toward the center of Trump-era Republican politics. Tarrio, a Floridian of Afro-Cuban descent, was sentenced last September to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy, defined as an effort by two or more people to overthrow the government or use force to hinder its operations, and other charges related to the Capitol riot. He has appealed.

Two criminal defense attorneys for Tarrio did not respond to emailed questions and phone calls. In the past, McInnes, Tarrio and a group of leaders dubbed “Elders” spoke publicly on the group’s behalf, set the agenda and guided its confrontations with left-wing groups around the country. They sat atop a formal structure and could disband Proud Boy chapters or expel members. Now, members say, the chapters are largely independent of each other and ban communications with the media. Most members who spoke to Reuters for this report did so on condition of anonymity. The group’s resilience has surprised some extremism experts. “The amazing thing is that so many people from the Proud Boys can be in jail and yet you have these active chapters,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the nonprofit Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “Traditionally when the head of a neo-Nazi or white supremacist group goes to jail or dies, the organization will collapse, but that does not seem to be happening with the Proud Boys.”

During the Trump administration, the Proud Boys engaged in large-scale street brawls with antifa – antifascists – and other leftist groups across the country, typically by taunting demonstrators to instigate a fight. They adopted the slogan “Fuck Around And Find Out,” and emblazoned the letters “FAFO” on hats and t-shirts. Some historians compare the Proud Boys to fascist European militias of the 1920s and 1930s such as the Brownshirts, a Nazi paramilitary group that helped bring Hitler to power in Germany. Proud Boys say they’re nothing like the Brownshirts and bear no resemblance to fascists. But street violence and extreme nationalism are features of both groups. In the weeks before the Capitol riots, some wore a patch inscribed with “RWDS,” short for “Right Wing Death Squad,” a term used to describe Central and South American paramilitaries who supported right-wing governments and dictatorships. After Trump left the White House, the Proud Boys turned to America’s culture wars. They clashed with supporters of abortion rights and vaccine mandates, and harassed organizers of Drag Queen Story Hours, where female impersonators read at libraries or bookstores to children. Fights often ensued. Since the 2021 Capitol attack, Reuters identified 29 incidents of political violence involving the Proud Boys, almost all of them centered around social issues. All but one of the eight cases in 2023 involved clashes between Proud Boys and left-wing activists at demonstrations supporting LGBTQ+ rights. The tally was based largely on news reports and court records of fights, assaults and other physical confrontations. This year, the Proud Boys have returned to politics. In the first three months of 2024, there have been far fewer Proud Boys public events than in the same period last year. But half of them have been pro-Trump and the rest have been political in nature, related to guns or immigration, said Kieran Doyle of the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit that monitors political violence.

On April 24, Proud Boys founder McInnes appeared at Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian protests. He told Reuters that the Proud Boys were not getting involved in the anti-Israel unrest, saying he was there to “ridicule” liberals by pretending to be a left-wing journalist. It didn’t work, he said, because people saw him and posted alerts on social media. “They recognized me and were scared.” There’s no authoritative count of Proud Boy members. McInnes claims there are about 5,000, down from 8,000 during Trump’s presidency but up from lows after the Capitol riot arrests. Official estimates of the Proud Boys’ strength vary widely, from 300 to 3,000 members, said a law enforcement source who has monitored the group. Reuters could not independently corroborate its numbers. Some former Proud Boys have abandoned the group for other, more overtly racist and violent groups, including the neo-Nazi Blood Tribe and the underground “Active Club” scene, a white supremacist male movement, one Proud Boy told Reuters.

i just know that eddie would ruin so many jokes/memes because of how often he'd say them. it would be so bad that you'd have to stop yourself from ripping your hair out with how much annoyance it caused you.

you're lying on your back, the comfort of his mattress pressing into you. eddie is hovering over you, wedged between your legs, as the two of you makeout.

little gasps and moans fill the room, he's grinding into, making you pant even harder. against your wishes, he moves away from your mouth, trailing small kisses down the side of your neck and up to your ear.

removing his mouth from your skin, his mouth is right next to your ear and you can hear and feel him breathing heavily.

"baby," his voice is husky and dripping with desire. after you answer with a small hmm, he goes to talk again. "do you want to know what i think?"

pulling his face back, he's now looking down at you. a millisecond of silence goes by and he's grinning down at you playfully.

"i think," before you know it, he's shouting "LIFE IS ROBLOX."

making the both of you fall into fits of giggles.

it goes on like that for weeks, him saying random dj khalid quotes every time you try to have a conversation. at first it's funny, always making you burst into laughter. but after so many times it genuinely starts becoming blood boiling.

the two of you are in the middle of target, you're crouched down reading the labels between two different face cleansers. your first mistake was leaving your guard down, the second mistake was taking your boyfriend to the store with you. before you know it, Eddie is shouting at the top of his lungs.

"LETS GO SHOPPIN. LETS GO SHOPPIN."

the minute it leaves his lips you drop both bottles and scurry out of the aisle with your basket. when he finally catches up to you at the self checkout, he's laughing so hard he's crying. you're not though, you can feel the burning sensation of embarrassment all through your body as other shoppers stare at the man who caused a disturbance.

it doesn't stop there though, oh no.

you're out at dinner, it's a fancier restaurant, with the rest of the gang. everything is going well, a bottle of wine has been ordered for the table, fancy little appetizers being shared between all of you, when the waiter comes over to take everyone's orders.

you should've known what was coming, really you should've but when you realized what was about to happen it was too late.

the middle age man wearing a white button down shirt and black slacks, stands next to eddie asking him what he would like. it seems like your boyfriend just couldn't help himself because he's shouting out,

"TELL THEM TO BRING OUT THE WHOLE OCEAN!"

immediately you cringe, hiding your face behind your hand as you sink lower into your seat. although you and other patrons don't particularly find it funny, some of the group can't help but find it amusing.

all you want to do is cry when you see the poor waiter's face, scrunched up in confusion, trying to understand whatever joke it is that eddie just said. finally after the most awkward ten seconds of your life, the boy next to you finally has the common sense to order what he really wants at a normal volume.

it's all the time that he does these things. you ask him what he wants to do for the day and he's responding with,

"LETS GO GOLFING."

you're sitting on the couch on a zoom call since it had been a work from home day. while you're trying to talk to everyone in the meeting, eddie walks out of your spare bedroom with his acoustic guitar. he starts playing atrociously like dj khalid did after receiving Bob Marley's guitar. to make matters worse, he can be seen in the background with the way you're sitting. he knows this since he placed the guitar down and starts dancing the same way the celebrity did in multiple videos.

it's exhausting and honestly it's starting to piss you off to no end.

you're in the car with him when you finally break, yelling at him that it's not funny anymore. he's quiet, letting you rip him a new asshole. when you're finally done, all the pent up rage leaving your body, all that can be heard is your hard breathing.

finally, finally you had some peace and silence in the car. you couldn't get too used to it though because before you know it, he's saying something else.

"LETS GO TO THE BEACH! LETS GO SWIMMIN' !"

after that day he seems to quit with all the stupid quotes, giving you a sigh of relief. what you don't realize is that you defeated one beast and woke up another.

one morning you ask him if he can take a look at your car, see what's causing it to make that weird noise. you can't help but feel your heart sink when he answers you.

"i would love to babe, but i'm just ken."

for the next month that's how he's answering all your questions and every shopping trip is stopped short the minute he breaks out into song and dance, singing the popular song from the movie at the top of his lungs.

GMMTV PRODUCER/DIRECTOR CAMEOS – IT'S NOT JUST FOR KICKS AND GIGGLES

So viewers who are familiar with the progenitors of My School President all had a collective chortle when its producer Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol appeared in the persona of supertutor Kruu P'Nop (ครูพี่ณพ) in Episode 10:

This was just the latest instance of a GMMTV director or producer popping up onscreen in their own show. 😍 In A Tale of a Thousand Stars (that he directed), Khun Noppharnach also appeared briefly as a tourist who bought Osmanthus fragrans from a blind man (in turn played by his Assistant Director Phyungsak Naruepai, also nicknamed Aof):

In The Eclipse, Director Golf Tanwarin Sukkhapisit also had their own cameo as the proprietor/manager of the Café for All:

However, it was really in Bad Buddy that this trend of having production team cameos got deployed in a big way (possibly because the pandemic simply made it more expedient to use members of the crew as extras and for minor roles – see this blogpost here for more info).

Most notable in BBS was Director Aof's cameo as a pharmacist:

Additionally, BBS Assistant Director Au Kornprom also took on a supporting role as Toto, Pran's senior and director of the Kwan-Riam musical, who changed the cishet period drama into a BL production:

However, recalling the meticulously clever seed-planting and subsequent plot reveals orchestrated within Bad Buddy itself, we can now tell that this was yet another Aha! moment that they sowed in there – but it was done with the intention for the seed to burst into bloom only later, well after BBS.

For Khun Kornprom's minor role in Bad Buddy as the director of a fictitious BL musical (the story of Kwan and Riam) truly was also foretelling his future role in real life – as the director of an actual BL musical (My School President). 🌼😊👍

So when MSP Producer Aof appeared onscreen in My School President as Tutor Nop, I found myself rooting even harder for MSP Director Au to pop up in a cameo as well, since MSP is in many ways (in its stylings, themes and characterizations) the nong to BBS's phi (and as the younger sibling it also pushes its message out there with a considerably lighter touch, since its target audience is much less mature than BBS's).

With this in mind, for the past 10 episodes I've been on edge awaiting Director Au Kornprom Niyomsil's cameo in MSP – until it hit me that it's already happened:

With the boys' school sharing Director Au's surname ("Niyomsil") this MSP cameo is veiled, rather than openly face-to-face.

But at this point I think the director/producer appearances are not just random anymore – it's possible to read some meaning into them beyond the feel-good giggles each one provokes:

In Bad Buddy, Director Aof's turn as a pharmacist (who provides Pat and Pran with ointment for their injuries) highlights his role in delivering BBS's message of healing, especially the healing of relationships (see this write-up here for more info). This theme of healing is everywhere in BBS – between Pat and Pran (whose relationship was forcefully ruptured by Dissaya in high school), between Pran and Dissaya (after their rift in Ep.10), between Pran and his musical soul (see this write-up here), between Korn and Wai (see this write-up here), between Wai and the world (see this write-up here) and yes even between Ming and Dissaya (see these write-ups here and here – although their process of healing was only tentatively begun and might not ever be complete, like the relationship between the Archi and Engine faculties as well).

In The Eclipse, Director Golf's cameo as proprietor/manager of a café that is open to all, highlighted the role of that series as a safe, non-judgmental space to confront and discuss some hard truths and painful realities with regard to LGBTQ+ issues, especially the experience of growing into your authentic queer self while embedded within an often-oppressive environment.

And in My School President, Director Au and Producer Aof cast themselves in the roles of a school and tutor respectively – they're positioning themselves as educators of the younger set, imparting from phi to nong some heartfelt but no less important lessons on positivity and self-esteem for those just embarking on their LGBTQ+ journey in life (and indeed for their straight allies as well). 💖

I'm less sure of the meaning behind Director Aof's cameo in ATOTS – it was possibly just for fun, since it seems like the first time (or one of the first times anyway) that they did it in a GMMTV series.

But just as Tian in ATOTS helped the villagers sell their tea by perfuming it with Osmanthus fragrans (and in doing so also helped them bypass the mercenary and controlling middlemen), Director Aof may also have been signaling that the soft, sweet-scented mantle of the BL genre could in turn help productions that are supportive of LGBTQ+ equality get their message more directly out to a wider audience. (And if this is indeed the case, I'm not sure he's wrong. 🥰)

It's cool that GMMTV's director/producer cameos can be imbued with significance beyond just the sly wink and chuckle. I'll certainly be watching out for more of them in other shows! 🤩

Studying customer profiles and target customer, as a team we had been given the task of styling a black and white top for a male and female mannequin. We were given the target customer: influencer.

The story was that the male and female were a couple. The female from New York influences fashion within a rich lifestyle and old money fashion. The male from Colorado, influences gaming, is a streamer but also old money aesthetic too.

For my personal shoplook boards, I created 3 black shirt styles and 3 white shirt styles; 3 male and 3 female. From this, I created digital customer profiles on PowerPoint. The female, given the name Diana, was a party girl who invested her time influencing a rich, princess lifestyle full of pink, glitter, and glam. She also adores Dior. The male, given the name Danny, was kind, rich but cared so much for the environment. He spends his times playing golf and tennis, attending church and promoting environmental campaigns all while being fashionable.

This project was really fun as I got to think creatively and use my imagination, having to think outside the box and put myself in the customers shoes.

I am pretty ill and just having a hard time with it. I’m not mobile anymore, have no hair, and have such a hard time even thinking of common words. But tbh I think of how Josh would be such a good friend and support system through this. Like we know the boy is a saint! He would really put in the effort to force me to smile and gain just a little confidence back

Josh as a support system would be so amazing. He’s the friend that would give you the shirt off his back, so you know he’s more than willing to help with mobility issues. Look at his arms lately! He could for sure help you in and out of the car to go to appointments. And you know that appointment days are treat days with him. He’ll take you for ice cream in the summer and hot cocoa or lattes in the colder months. Sometimes if you have the energy and appetite, he’ll take you to a nice lunch and then to target or walmart. He has no issues pushing you around in a wheelchair if you need it. He’d prefer the fun of tossing you into a shopping cart and doing it that way, but the look of the old lady greeter as he hoists you into the basket makes him rethink. He makes sharp turns, makes silly racecar noises, anything to make you laugh and smile.

No hair? No problem. With his interest in film and theater, he knows people who know where to get the best wigs. Not a fan of wigs? Don’t blame you, they’re hot after a while and can be super uncomfy! Doesn’t matter, he reminds you of how perfect you are, how it’ll grow back on day, and that he would shave himself bald and give you his own hair if you wanted it (this is when you say you’d prefer Sam’s, and Josh gets lost in the idea of shaving Sam’s luscious locks and the chaos that would ensue if he woke up without them). On a beautiful fall day, you were feeling a little down, and Josh makes you dress up, and go into the backyard, and he has a camera, and he makes you pose for photos. You want to roll your eyes and try and make excuses, but he doesn’t relent. He poses you himself in the sunlight and takes photo after photo. The afternoon is spent that way, and when you go back inside to warm up a bit, he shows you a few of them. You’re surprised to see just how amazing you look. Your smile is gleaming, your eyes bright and shimmering. Josh reminds you that your beauty is truly from the inside, and it didn’t leave just because your hair has.

And don’t even get me started on the fact that if Josh cares this much about you, his brothers and family do too. Karen is texting you every few days, asking how you’re doing and if you need a mama to come visit and help you. Jake is on FaceTime with Josh, walking him through recipes while Josh is toiling away in the kitchen. He’s making so much food, you don’t know how you’re gonna eat it all, but he’s for tons of Tupperware at the ready to portion and freeze meals so all you have to do is reheat them. Danny sends you beanies from every golf course he visits (you lose most of your heat through your head!) and Sam brings Rosie over for snuggles and naps, almost always when you’ve had an especially rough time. You and Rosie doze on the couch while he and Josh clean and organize your home for you, making sure nothing falls behind and you don’t have to lift a finger.

cody: he went to target to get a resistance band to workout with. everyone else just tagged along and he was too tired to say anything.

after he grabbed the thing he came for, he made the common mistake of not leaving immediately and of course was sucked into the dangerous temptation of ✨browsing✨. while walking around in the store, he passed the hair product aisle. He didn’t need anything, his curls were healthy as ever, but he did see that pomade stuff obi wan was obsessed with, and bought that for him (obi wan paid him back later. he was so insistent that he doesn’t use the hair product that cody offered to return it and obi wan shouted “NO”. cody: 👁👄👁).

he looked around for a wristlet keychain in hopes to show the jedi council that they should make the jedi attach them to their lightsaber, to no avail.

he didn’t buy much else, other than a personal pizza at the café, and set out looking for his brothers to see if they were ready to go.

he genuinely shouldn’t have been surprised to see them all huddled around a cart full of snacks they picked out. somehow, they managed to pool enough money to buy 163.48 credits worth of soda, candy, and snacks. cody said nothing. his brothers deserved it.

boil: waxer put boil in charge of drinks, and waxer was in charge of snacks. they had just came back from a long campaign and there was a lot of cars games in the barracks at night. he made a few credits, which he was excited to spend.

waxer had a list written down of everyone’s favorite snacks, which he told boil he had to adhere to. boil would have preferred to just get what he wanted and then share, but waxer was insistent, so he relented.

a lot of people liked cookies and blue milkshakes. he was able to buy the cookies but just got blue ice cream for those who wanted to make the milkshakes themselves.

when he and waxer met up, they put everything into one big basket. they called over gregor and and they all pooled their money together and justttt managed to cover the cost.

the snacks lasted them two weeks as a battalion. boil did such a good job picking everything out that he was officially Snack Grabber from then on out.

also he 100% knew when gregor was hiding in the racks of clothing so he would aggressively sort through shirts on the other side and pretend to look for something while knowing he was smacking gregor with the shirts as he moved them.

waxer: he bought an ungodly amount of coffee. but it’s okay. at least it wasn’t all for him (this time).

while boil may think it’s dumb, waxer had a color coded list that was both alphabetically and categorically organized to be easy to find everyone’s snack preferences. he had a separate one for drinks.

before actually acquiring the drinks, waxer did some math on the back of a receipt with a space golf pencil to figure out exactly how many credits he would need to cover the cost of drinks, down to the decimal point. this way, boil could use the rest of the money to buy as many snacks as possible.

he also brought the exact amount needed to buy a box of wax strips to keep his head nice and smooth.

lastly, he bought a sticker mustache in case he ever needed to bear a passing resemblance of boil. for mission (*cough* pranking cody *cough*) purposes, of course.

gregor: he’s the type of guy to hide in the clothing racks and jump out and scare people. luckily for the galaxy, the only customers in the store at the time were his brothers. unluckily for his brothers, gregor did not play fair even for family. and even more unluckily for gregor, his brothers are soldiers. they have fast reflexes. and he got pushed backwards into the clothing rack. every. single. time.

he also liked ease dropping on the conversations of the employees passing by (he didn’t scare them cause he didn’t want to get kicked out). he went back to the barracks with so much gossip on bethany and zilde, and he has no idea who they ARE.

he was then responsible for weekly installments of bethany and zilde and would keep making up the story.

when gregor disappeared, someone else continued the story.

it was never the same

+bonus, they bring numa: (yes i’m well aware there is no way this could ever be canon but indulge me. this is my return to the target series after months. let me have my fun.)

so numa is absolutely the type of kid to try and climb into the giant ball basket thing. boil would say no and waxer would nod his head in agreement, but as soon as boil turned away, he’d lift up numa and put her in. when boil turned back around, he looked for numa in confusion. waxer tried to feign ignorance even as numa fell out of the pit through the bars.

after that, boil was very much on no-nonsense duty. he put numa in the seat part of the cart and pushed her around while waxer relayed the grocery list to him. numa was happy to sit and look around.

at the end of the day, they went to the starbucks and got her a hot chocolate and a rice krispy treat.

when numa was much older, and only had memories to smile upon, she found the taste of rice krispies too sweet to eat anymore.

2023 02 19 Sunday

Another Sunday that's too nice to be inside 🙂. It feels more like March. My boyfriend and I are both up for miniature golf, but none are open yet. Instead, we'll visit a state park (about an hour and a half away, in a different state, actually LOL), that's a bit of a historic site. They'll be trails to walk around on, we're sure, so I'll dress for some light hiking.

I think it's warm enough for capri jeans, so I'll wear those today. Let's see if I can put together a President's Day look, red, white, and blue. I see a blue and white striped t-shirt, that's the perfect color. I'm in a lighter colors mood, so I don't really want to wear solid dark blue, even though it's an important color for the outfit I want LOL. This one is blue and white striped, so that works, being not so dark. It's a little lighter weight than I'd like for being in the 50s, so I'll add to it a blue tank top with white stars, on top of my t-shirt, like I would wear a dress. That feels about perfect. I'll wear my red capri jeans and white sneakers, and voila, a red, white, and blue President's Day outfit great for walking around a park. What do you think?

End of day thoughts: We went to a shopping center in the area in search of a very casual, preferably local to the area, place to eat, and we stumbled upon what is really a coffee shop that serves a limited amount of food -- snacks and a few sandwiches, really. That's where we went, especially when we found there was a piano player performing. We went in, ate, and enjoyed the music. Today was definitely a fun day 😀.

MY SCHOOL PRESIDENT – REPRESENTATION MATTERS

Maybe it's just my own wishful thinking, and maybe it's too early to tell for sure (though I don't think so), but remembering what Producer Aof, Director Au and the rest of the team did with Bad Buddy – it looks like the MSP team is giving a positive shout-out to the spectrum, even while anchoring the series firmly within the BL genre.

The role of the producer at GMM Music in Ep.5 was played by actor and host Golf Kittipat Chalaragse, who openly identifies as a transgender woman.

It's important to note that she is treated by the boys with utmost respect in her one scene, and also that she broke disappointing news to Gun (not being shortlisted for signing despite his obvious talent) with kindness and empathy.

This quietly positive portrayal of a trans character in a position of influence is important for all the trans kids out there who might be watching this. (And yes, I'm aware that Golf's character in the show is not specifically identified as trans, but given her fame in Thailand I think most Thai viewers would see her as such.)

Bearing in mind that My School President is a lightly-crafted Thai-style High School Musical taking place in a QL universe, I believe that it is still carrying the sense of mission previous (more strident) Thai QL dramas have been sounding – The Eclipse, Not Me, and even Bad Buddy come to mind.

As with most other QL series, no one is treated as being less than anybody else based on gender or sexuality. So the boys take their Ep.6 music video – about the awkwardness of being in love while in the friendzone – happily into BL territory, free from any fear of societal judgement.

Previous dramas that did this (to the best of my memory) had an older target demographic, but this one is sending out a message of hope and normalization to a younger audience that it's OK if your sexuality or gender isn't society's perceived norm.

And to those who fit within the perceived norm as well, there is also the messaging that the trials and tribulations of your queer friends, family and compatriots have a lot in common with the dramas of your cishet lives too – so maybe it's time to stop othering anybody for being a little bit (or even a lot) different. (This is ultimately the message behind the switch from straight couples to BL ones in the Ep.6 music video, and also the BL switch in Bad Buddy's Kwan-Riam musical.)

It's not the first time a BL has been sending out messages geared to bolster queer self-esteem and normalization, but it's the first high school one in recent memory that seems to be radiating positivity all around, and hopefully its message will land with the younger set.

Heartstopper may already have done this, and its finished product is perhaps a bit more realistically grounded and polished, but that show was restricted to a smaller, paying and arguably older audience on Netflix.

I cannot begin to emphasize how important it is that My School President and its messages of positive self-worth are beamed free-of-charge to LGBTQ+ teens all over the world, including places where it might not even be safe to be openly LGBTQ+.

My School President may be going all out to entertain (and it does), but beneath the froth and fluff it's still doing something. With the team behind it I wouldn't have expected anything less. And I'm so glad they're at it still. 💖 👍

PROUD BOYS ARE BACK AND STANDING BY

Members warn of violence as they fight for Trump

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – A dark SUV cruised past former President Donald Trump’s supporters near his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club on a windy April afternoon.

Billowing from the vehicles were three flags: one for the Trump campaign, two others with the initials “PB” – the insignia of the farright Proud Boys movement.

Through the open windows, three Proud Boys flashed the “OK” sign, a hand gesture often associated with white supremacy and the far right.

Trump’s fans cheered.

Four men dressed in the signature blackand- yellow shirts of the Proud Boys spilled out of the SUV and began glad-handing the crowd like homecoming heroes.

The Proud Boys are back.

Four years after the failed effort to overturn Trump’s 2020 defeat, the violent all-male extremist group that led the storming of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, is rebuilding and regaining strength as Trump campaigns to return to the White House, according to interviews with eight Proud Boys, two U.S. law enforcement officials and four experts who track the group’s online activity.

Since the Jan. 6 riot, four former Proud Boys leaders have been convicted in federal court of seditious conspiracy, each sentenced to 15 or more years in prison.

At least 70 other members were charged with participating in the violence.

But that crackdown hasn’t stopped the Proud Boys.

Some Proud Boys say they are preparing to emerge once again as a physical force for Trump, drawn to his hard-line nationalism and convinced their leaders will be pardoned if he wins.

Trump has promised to pardon convicted Jan. 6 rioters if he’s elected.

After Trump was found guilty May 30, an Ohio Proud Boys chapter vowed “war” and posted a video of Proud Boys street brawls that ended with the message, “Fighting solves everything.”

A Miami chapter said, “Now, more than ever, we are recruiting!”

Some posted images of the upside- down American flag symbolizing the “Stop the Steal” movement that falsely claims Trump won the 2020 election.

One Proud Boy told Reuters that America is in a period of “calm before the storm.”

The group’s main Telegram channel, however, posted a message urging Proud Boys to stay calm and not get drawn into a trap and risk arrest.

“Trump is, of course, getting railroaded but we will not be walking into any honey pots over this.”

In recent weeks, the group has become more prominent at pro-Trump events, highlighting the risk of renewed violence in the November election.

Dozens of Proud Boys – some in body armor and helmets – marked the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection with a show of force at the statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. On April 20, nearly a dozen gathered at a rally for Trump’s Republican campaign in Wilmington, North Carolina.

More recently, groups of Proud Boys from two chapters mixed with tens of thousands of Trump supporters at a campaign rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, in May.

On a boardwalk near the entrance of the Wildwood rally, several Proud Boys identified themselves as members of the “New Jersey State” chapter.

One said they were there to provide security and stop agitators from “disrespecting or assaulting everybody.”

Three men from another chapter greeted them, their faces hidden by gaiter masks.

The re-emergence of the Proud Boys at Trump’s political rallies and events coincides with polls showing that a majority of Americans fear political violence will flare around November’s election.

It also comes when Trump’s use of incendiary rhetoric is inspiring his supporters to target his opponents – including judges, prosecutors and political rivals – in a wave of threats that’s unprecedented in modern American politics.

Trump himself has not ruled out the possibility of political violence if he loses in November.

“If we don’t win, you know, it depends,” he said when asked by Time magazine in April if he expected violence after the election.

If he’s jailed or put under house arrest, “I’m not sure the public would stand for it,” he said in a Fox News interview in late May. “At a certain point there’s a breaking point.”

Before the last election, Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.”

Three months later, federal prosecutors say, the group’s leaders plotted and led the insurrection of the U.S. Capitol.

Trump’s baseless claims the election was rigged inspired the gathering, and Trump himself urged the assembled crowd to march on the Capitol as Congress certified Joe Biden’s victory.

A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to questions for this story about his rhetoric, Jan. 6 or the Proud Boys.

A new direction

As the Proud Boys regroup, they’ve made changes designed to make them less vulnerable to law enforcement scrutiny, including doing away with layers of top leadership, according to interviews with members.

The Proud Boys now operate with self-governing chapters in more than 40 states, with little apparent central coordination, members said.

While the group’s structure has changed, its Canadian founder remains an inspirational figure.

Gavin McInnes, a British-born far-right commentator who lives in New York, announced his resignation from the Proud Boys in 2018.

But he remains deeply involved with the group.

“When there are disputes, he mediates,” one Proud Boy said. J. Daniel Hull, a lawyer who has represented Proud Boys, agreed. “They’ll take a lot of cues from Gavin McInnes.”

McInnes told Reuters he is not seeking a leadership role but that he communicates regularly with members, appears at some events and tries to resolve infighting.

Some Proud Boys affectionately refer to him as a “Godfather.”

McInnes’ successor, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, raised the Proud Boys’ profile, pulling them from the fringe of the farright toward the center of Trump-era Republican politics.

Tarrio, a Floridian of Afro-Cuban descent, was sentenced last September to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy, defined as an effort by two or more people to overthrow the government or use force to hinder its operations, and other charges related to the Capitol riot.

He has appealed.

Two defense attorneys for Tarrio did not respond to emailed questions and phone calls.

In the past, McInnes, Tarrio and a group of leaders dubbed “Elders” spoke on the group’s behalf, set the agenda and guided its confrontations with leftwing groups around the country.

They sat atop a formal structure and could disband Proud Boy chapters or expel members.

Now, members say, the chapters are largely independent and ban communications with the media.

Most members who spoke to Reuters for this report did so on condition of anonymity.

The group’s resilience has surprised some extremism experts.

“The amazing thing is that so many people from the Proud Boys can be in jail and yet you have these active chapters,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism.

“Traditionally when the head of a neo-Nazi or white supremacist group goes to jail or dies, the organization will collapse, but that does not seem to be happening with the Proud Boys.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on the group’s activities and whether authorities are monitoring the Proud Boys.

A previously unreported 2022 Department of Homeland Security intelligence report, reviewed by Reuters, refers to “Domestic Violent Extremists” identifying themselves as Proud Boys who are “primarily engaged in violence against law enforcement and ideological opponents.”

It’s not against the law to be a member and most Proud Boys haven’t done anything illegal, it added.

“You can be as big a Proud Boy supporter as you want in this country as long as you’re not planning criminal activity,” said former FBI agent Mark Seyler, who investigated the Proud Boys before retiring at the end of 2021.

But, he added, after the Capitol riots, “there would be no excuse this time not to take them seriously.”

‘Tip of the spear’

At Tarrio’s criminal trial, one Proud Boy described the group as “foot soldiers of the right.”

Today, glorification of violence remains a core feature of the Proud Boys – as does unwavering support of Trump, according to interviews with current members.

The Proud Boys describe their ideology as “Western chauvinism,” which they say is a deep embrace of Western civilization and traditions.

Critics say the group uses the term “Western” rather than “white” to veil its racism – a charge the Proud Boys’ defenders deny.

While the Proud Boys claim the group is a fraternal organization, in practice it promotes street violence against the left and trolls liberals, Democrats, feminists, transgender activists and others they oppose.

A handbook outlining Proud Boys rituals was revealed by prosecutors in 2023 as evidence in Tarrio’s trial.

The manual says that becoming a highranking Proud Boy requires “engaging in a major conflict,” including “serious physical fights” or “getting arrested.”

A defense lawyer in the case argued that some of the document was merely sarcastic and politically incorrect.

A “Proud Boy Prayer” on a website promoting a New Jersey chapter of the group puts it this way:

“Strengthen us Brothers with power and hard fists to help us defend the right and defeat the wrong.”

The same site says the Proud Boys don’t support acts that violate criminal law.

Federal prosecutors and a congressional investigation both named the Proud Boys as crucial plotters and leaders of the Jan. 6 attack.

The Proud Boys “lined up behind Donald Trump” and were “ready to commit violence on his behalf,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Mulroe said in court.

“These defendants saw themselves as Donald Trump’s army, fighting to keep their preferred leader in power no matter what the law or the courts had to say about it.”

Publicly, members of the group deny the Proud Boys orchestrated the Jan. 6 violence. Instead, they characterize the riot as spontaneous and their leaders as innocent.

Privately, however, some Proud Boys acknowledge that the group drove the events of that day.

“Without the Proud Boys, Jan.6 didn’t happen,” one longtime member of the group told Reuters. “The Proud Boys were the tip of the spear.”

During the Trump administration, the Proud Boys engaged in large-scale street brawls with antifa – antifascists – and other leftist groups across the country, typically by taunting demonstrators to instigate a fight.

Some historians compare the Proud Boys to fascist European militias of the 1920s and 1930s such as the Brownshirts, a Nazi paramilitary group that helped bring Hitler to power in Germany.

Proud Boys say they’re nothing like the Brownshirts and bear no resemblance to fascists.

But street violence and extreme nationalism are features of both groups.

Numbers hard to pin down

After Trump left the White House, the Proud Boys turned to America’s culture wars.

They clashed with supporters of abortion rights and vaccine mandates, and harassed organizers of drag queen story hours, where female impersonators read to children at libraries or bookstores.

Fights often ensued.

Since the 2021 Capitol attack, Reuters identified 29 incidents of political violence involving the Proud Boys, almost all of them centered on social issues.

All but one of the eight cases in 2023 involved clashes between Proud Boys and left-wing activists at demonstrations supporting LGBTQ+ rights.

This year, the Proud Boys have returned to politics.

In the first three months of 2024, there have been far fewer Proud Boys public events than in the same period last year.

But half of them have been pro-Trump and the rest have been political in nature, related to guns or immigration, said Kieran Doyle of the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a U.S.-based nonprofit that monitors political violence.

On April24, Proud Boys founder McInnes appeared at Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian protests.

There’s no authoritative count of Proud Boy members.

McInnes claims there are about 5,000, down from 8,000 during Trump’s presidency but up from lows after the Capitol riot arrests.

Official estimates of the Proud Boys’ strength vary widely, from 300 to 3,000 members, said a law enforcement source who has monitored the group.

Reuters could not independently corroborate its numbers.

Some former Proud Boys have abandoned the group for other, more overtly racist and violent groups, including the neo-Nazi Blood Tribe and the underground “Active Club” scene, a white supremacist male movement, one Proud Boy told Reuters.

Julie Farnam, a former U.S. Capitol Police assistant director of intelligence who now runs a private investigative agency, said there are 154 Proud Boy chapters in 48 U.S. states.

Farnam also said the Proud Boys appear to be growing overseas and have 18 international chapters in nine countries, although their size is unclear.

“It has grown and I don’t see any evidence it’s slowing down,” she said.

Canada and New Zealand have designated the Proud Boys a terrorist group.

Today, many Proud Boys want Trump back in power, not just because of the prospect of pardons.

For some, his appeal reflects a deeper cultural shift in America – from unease at changing racial and ethnic demographics to anger over immigration and a perception on the right that liberals are destroying the country.

Trump frequently exploits those grievances on the campaign trail in apocalyptic language that’s echoed by some Proud Boys.

“If Trump loses, our republic, the country goes away. Bad things are going to happen,” said Michale Graves, a Proud Boy and former lead singer of the Misfits punk band
