Because I love you all. I have some tips for Smart TVs and securing an IoT device. Sorry it's a long post but read it, learn it, and know it's so SO important to protect your devices in this growing tech world. These devices are severely unprotected and prone to spying and data sharing.

1. Change the password of your router (both for wifi and the admin user to configure it) and configure it by changing the DNS ports (you can usually do this in the setup page at 192.168. 1.1 or 192.168. 0.1 pasted in your browser)

2. Configure the tv and if possible turn off the microphone and camera. Read through the features to make sure things like location and stuff are not enabled. Turn off data sharing etc.

3. Put an sticker over the camera.

4. Install an AV like Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton etc. Unfortunately the free ones are no longer up to scratch these days but you can get decent subscriptions. Even so if you dont want to pay get a free one such as AVG or Spybot

5. Update the TV whenever there are new updates.

6. Turn it off (at the plug) when not in use.

7. Make sure all your accounts linked to it have good passwords and are configured properly in security and privacy settings.

8. Change the DNS of your TV: Usually somewhere in Settings>Network>Network Settings>IP Settings>DNS Setttings>.

9. Where possible always enable two factor authentication. This can get annoying but there are ways to make this quick. You can get yubikeys (physical keys) or use sms.

10. Dont connect it to the internet or use a direct ethernet line if possible. If you're really paranoid you can even remove the back panel and solder the wifi chip to destroy it.

11. This is complicated but you can segment it in your home network. The simplest way is to have a separate 'wifi' for all your smart devices. You can set this up in the router itself or set up an entirely new router.

For DNS usually these are the best. OpenDNS is my preference but it's up to people to look into them and decide which they would prefer.

1.1.1.1 = CloudFlare DNS

208.67.220.220 or 208.67.222.222 = OpenDNS

8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 = GoogleDNS
