This is now the second fandom that I’ve been in where the fans went in to a long awaited season THRILLED that their ship had finally come in, and left it stunned and heartbroken. And let me tell those of you who did not watch Veronica Mars, that first time was truly awful.
I don’t mind spoilers (actually appreciate knowing them if something bad is coming) so I started seeing the season 2 reactions when I was only 2/3 done with the season. It felt familiar in an awful way - “heartbroken, gutted, can’t believe he did this to us”. I was terrified. So when I was sad at the end of the season but not hysterical like I was post VMars season 4, I was pretty relieved.
But the wonderful thing to watch has been the different reaction as the fandom had time to process it. Post VMars season 4, we were mad and we just got madder. The more we thought about it, the more we realized how badly written it was, and how cruel and out of character Veronica was. We felt betrayed. We spent weeks crying and raging as a fandom and then just walked away from this thing most of us had loved for decades. 4 years later I still can’t watch any Kristen Bell shows without getting upset.
By contrast, as the GO fandom has processed, people are realizing that this was heartbreaking, but it made sense. I will always be mad that their kiss was like that (and hope to hell we find out later that that was not their first kiss), but the relationship and character arcs were supported. It has made us more desperate to see more, not less.
So everyone, watch, watch, and watch some more! Leave it running in the background! We need to give Neil the chance to give us (and them!) the happy ending.
Of course, it probably helped that GO didn’t kill off half the ship.

So I watched Skip Intro's Video on Veronica Mars and it brought back my obsession with it full swing so I was rewatching it and consuming fanon and thinking about only Veronica Mars for like. 2 weeks? And then I got to the movie and S4 and no obsession I've ever had has stopped on such a dime like watching the second half of season 3 and the Veronica Mars Movie.
And it's not the ships. Obviously every time Veronica and Logan break up and date other people it's a wasted lazy subplot that could've been screen time for some of the amazing and wonderful side characters. Give Wallace and Mac and Weevil and Keith more to do. Give them subplots. Or maybe focus on the mysteries and overarching plots of the show.
The video, which you should absolutely watch, focuses on what I consider to be 1 side of the VMars coin. The noir stylings which pair perfectly with the anti-establishment distrust of authority. The real world problems and the fact that the systems in place are corrupt and only benefit those in power. The "Laws are threats" type message where the only force for good is Veronica and like minded people trying. Doing whatever they can to make the world better by fighting and subverting the system.
The other side of the coin is the teen girl drama of it all. Veronica is Not Like Other Girls. But She USED TO BE. it's pretty pink prom dresses and pep squad snickerdoodles. It's the contrast and juxtaposition between the life she's "supposed to be living" the life she WAS living, the genre she used to be in. Before the show started, and now. When her life is a noir film. This side of the coin. Who still secretly cares about grades and boys and what her hair looks like. Who can effortlessly code switch between tough as nails and marshmallow soft. That compassion matters. That you need to take the time to do something nice for a friend when the world is ending. That you should remember Lilly floating in the pool and giggling, and also catch her killer. That's the show. It's the perfect balancing and blending of these two ideas that makes the first season so compelling.
When that balance tips too far in one direction the show stops being fun, or stops being interesting, or worse both.
All this to say. I think there needs to be a place for mystery shows that are geared towards different demographics AND criticize existing systems. I've spent my whole life obsessing over media that's all about mysteries and beyond that seeking justice. Scooby Doo, Nancy Drew, Veronica Mars.
The big problem these days is that so many mystery shows focus on law enforcement, but that is disingenuous and boring. They have to buy into the system, making them all some degree of copaganda, even those that try to criticize it fall short because they're still inherently tied to the system, and they're repetitive. When you buy into the law enforcement complex of America, you basically reinforce the status quo which doesn't do anything interesting with the mysteries or the complexities of the problems inherent in the system.
A children's TV show where the spooky monster is a man in a mask who's trying to manipulate the price of real estate or whatever is fundamentally a better story than this guy kills people and baits cops into elaborate schemes because he's crazy.
Even the shows that aren't about law enforcement are often about law enforcement consultants and still work within the system. Like. Sometimes the cops are comically bad at their jobs and that's better than having them be the heroes but there's still this reinforcement of belief in the prison industrial complex.
I think Veronica Mars should've grown up to be an investigative journalist taking down corporations and exposing politicians. Like. Spotlight level journalist. Which is dangerous and exciting and spooky and glamorous in the noir style, but engages with the issues inherent in our current judicial system in a way that's more interesting than her joining the FBI or being a Lawyer or even being a PI.
I think the modern version of VMars would be like. A darker version of Only Murders in the Building. With a focus on journalism and exposing the horrible truths beneath the surface of Neptune and its law enforcement.
This was all over the place but if you made it this far pls let me know what you think and please recommend me mystery media that's not about cops.

i finished my epic vmars rewatch (an unintentional rewatch, but i put on a random mid-s1 ep and my dad decided to watch it with me and got suddenly obsessed with the show after never having watched it before so i was locked in). I initially wrote a really really way too long and rambly post about my postseries opinions but lol I’ll try this again in a more concise way
veronica is such an interesting complex character with so many positive and negative qualities and I would follow her anywhere, I’m sad we’re not getting s5
keith/veronica is easily one of the very very best and most interesting parent/child relationships on television
jackie deserved better and she always deserved better and ngl I am forever side eyeing her massive character change in the back half of s2, she started as such a great foil for veronica
logan is a character i struggle with, bc i find him largely just annoying for the first two seasons, boring for s3/the movie, but then I genuinely like him in season 4. lmao great timing to like him for the first time, right?
boy did wallace get nothing to do post s2
weevil was always incredibly fascinating and should have been a more central character from the getgo
why is dick still here if they just rly loved that actor so much he should have had an identical twin brother who joined the cast instead of keeping around the guy who set veronica up to be raped as a goofy silly dumb spectacle friend character
this show is so fucking mess about rape in soooooo many many ways
leo/nicole/veronica had amazing throuple energy in s4 and I will go to my grave rooting for it to happen postseries
s1>s2>s4>s3>movie
rip vmars you were a messy messy mess but I enjoy a lot of you, and the mars’ will always be one of my favest fictional families

So the way to make veronica still a cool misanthrope as an adult is to refuse to give her any character development, make her try to drag everyone within her reach down to her level bc growth is uncomfortable, and making her stop caring about people in general? The girl rescued missing puppies for christsake and now shes making fun of the man she loves for going to therapy?
And dont even get me started on how veronica, who was raped after being dosed with ecstacy, is now ok taking that exact drug for fun. And vaping in her best friends house while avoiding said friend.

theonsa + veronica mars
One of these days he’s gonna kill her himself, he swears.
If she didn’t give him a fucking stroke and kill him first.
His foot won’t stop tapping against the balcony floor and his heart still feels kinda, completely fucked, and he can’t hear a thing they’re saying inside no matter how hard he tries. His knuckles hurt.
Maybe later he’ll think about how fucking embarrassing he’s being, but really right now he can’t because his mind is too preoccupied being worried about Sansa Stark for the twelfth time that week.
Sansa Stark and her heroics and her recklessness and her sharp smile. The girl we was pretty sure he hated, but now kinda thinks he never could. The one inside that motel room right now talking to some government agent that just tried to kidnap her.
So fuck him for being a little concerned, right?
He thinks about the way his heart dropped out of his ass, when he heard her on the phone, when he thought she was in danger. The way it turned into this protective anger he didn’t even know he could feel much less feel for Sansa Stark.
And yet here he is.
He flexes his wrist. He kinda wished he’d hit the guy one more time, just because.
He turns when she walks out and he has a compulsive need to swallow. She makes him a little nervous, god knows why.
She stands in front of him and she just looks at him and he’s waiting for her to yell at him, but she’s not. She’s just watching him and she doesn’t even look angry and god she’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. How had he never realized that before?
Of course she was pretty, it was Sansa, everyone knew she was fucking pretty, he’d just never realized she was so…
“That was stupid,” she says it like a fact because, well, it is. Maybe she made him stupid.
“You’re welcome.” Yeah, thanks for the stroke. Let’s do this again sometime.
She was so frustrating.
“Thank you,” she sighs, and of all the things he had expected her to say that was… not even on the list. She didn’t thank him, she was always irritated with him. Right?
“Are you okay?”
Gimme a reason to go kick that guy’s ass and I fucking will.
She nods, silent, and when has Sansa Stark ever been silent around him. He really wants her to say something. But she doesn’t.
He thinks maybe he should go, and then she’s kissing him.
He’s so shocked, he’s so in awe, at what’s happening he can’t even fucking move. There’s just her soft mouth on his and then it’s over. She pulls back too soon and he’s not sue what just happened.
She’s looking at him, and she looks confused and she looks scared and no he doesn’t want her to be scared. Her eyes so blue and so sweet he wants to fucking drown in them.
He forgets every single word in the English language.
She’s blinks and gives him a funny smile and then she’s turning to go. But he doesn’t want her to go and she can’t go and he can move again. He grabs her arm and turns her back and then he’s the one kissing her.
He never realized how much he really wanted to kiss Sansa Stark, until he needs to kiss Sansa Stark.
She’s the sweetest thing he’s ever tasted and he pulls her as close as he possibly can. He wants every part of her. He wants to hold her and he never wants to let go and he can’t even think about how stupid or how out of place that sounds because there’s just her.
It feels like finally and maybe the best thing to ever happen to him.
She’s Sansa, and yeah she’s a pain in his ass, and yeah he thought he couldn’t stand her, but he’s kissing her and he remembers how perfect she is. It feels like a dream. It feels like the weirdest most surreal fucking dream of his life.
And then it ends.
Her lips are gone and the warm fuzzy feelings in his head feel out of place and he still has no idea what just happened.
They look at each other and their hands fall away and neither of them says a word. He’s afraid if he says anything he’ll just fuck it up more and, god, does he not want to do that.
She steps away and she walks down the stairs and he watches her go. He watches her the whole way. She gets to her shitty little car and looks at him and he’s not sure what it means.
He hopes it means something. But she just looks at him and why can’t either of them fucking say anything?
She drives away, and he’s still standing there and he can still feel the way her mouth felt against his. And he’s pretty sure he wants to feel it again and it doesn’t feel weird anymore.
He’s totally fucking gone for Sansa Stark.
Robb would have killed him.
