This is an old piece that I wrote for an English assignment. It is entitled “The Missing Fairy Princess”. 

It’s backpacking season at the University of Michigan. For those of you who are unaware of what that means, “backpacking” is the process of choosing classes to put in your “backpack” before registering for them at a later date. It involves many hours of obsessing over the course guide and worrying about what the future will look like if you do not get the classes that you need for your major. With that in mind, it’s an extremely stressful experience for someone as manic and worried as me. At this point in my college career, I am bombarded with adults telling me “Oh, you’re just a freshman! You don’t need to know what you’re doing with your life quite yet!” when in reality, this question of “what do you want to be” is single-handedly eating away at my heart. I am a person of many ambitions and yet in a school full of aerospace engineers, aspiring business men and women, medical students, and overachieving triple-majors, I feel as if my creativity has been pushed to the side for a more practical pursuit. In these times, I cannot help but look back at the young girl I used to be who wanted to be everything.

At my preschool culmination, the teachers all asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. All the boys and girls said they wanted to be firefighters and police officers or dentists and doctors. Yet when it got to me, I said I wanted to be a fairy princess. One of the parents laughed at me and my dad essentially told them “Hey, if my daughter wants to be a fairy princess, she can. It’s more original and creative than being a police officer, like your kid.” Now, this is just something my father has told me over and over; I can only really trust him and his memory skills to assume that this retelling of the story is actually an accurate depiction of what happened. Same goes to the time that he told me that the mothers that led our Girl Scout group had to pull him aside, because during arts and crafts, I tried to make a mind-control device to brainwash the other girls. Although I can’t remember a single thing about these events, I’ve heard these stories so many times that I can seriously see them - well, at least in my own imaginative way. I see me shrieking “I want to be a fairy princess!” at the culmination and suddenly I’m in this cute, little purple fairy costume laughing as my dad has his altercation with the other parent. I can vividly see this “mind-control device,” a black-and-white pinwheel that spins as if I was some engineer who could have actually made that at the age of eight. Over the years, these tales have deeply embedded into me that I could be whatever I wanted to be and I had the drive and ability to be or create something inspiring. And at that young age, I could have been a fairy princess. I could have made a mind-control device. And as I got older, I found myself in love with so many things - writing, singing, teaching, learning, math, English, science, animals. I wanted to be everything and when you’re eight, the idea of being everything seems achievable.

Whether or not those stories were true, there’s clearly a path of imaginative behavior that trailed off from then. Starting in elementary school, I was starting to write my own books. Yes, crappy by default, but true pieces of art in the eyes of my younger self. (My debut story was Pretty and Paris, a book about two poodles that discovered they were sisters and then one was kidnapped by a jealous ex-best friend who planned to sell her on the black market. Iconic.) I was making short films about pineapples with jobs and reality shows about my stuffed animals. I started writing music about the food in my fridge and the boys I thought were cute in my second grade class. I learned how to play the guitar and piano by my own hand and I realized I loved to write poetry. In high school, I was in theatre and started writing plays and when adults told me they were good, it encouraged that childlike creativity that had always followed me throughout the years. I was bound for amazing things and that eight-year-old girl could look in the bathroom mirror and recognize it.

But now I am 19. And, yes, that’s ridiculously young and I am fully aware how bizarre it is for me to be saying I can no longer be creative or that I cannot be whatever I want to be. But at this point in my life, there definitely is a limit on the possibilities. I came into college thinking that I would take all the classes I was interested in, that I would be in multiple clubs, that I would have internships lined up for me. But that’s not actually how reality works. There are GEs (the “general education” credits that the school swears you must take to be educated) and prerequisites that you are forced to take as stepping stones. You have a job because the cost of living in a college town is extremely exaggerated, so now the time you have for clubs is cut short. There are internship opportunities over summer but you are so tired from a demanding semester that you cannot even imagine putting in a minimal level of effort until you have to next semester. I think most importantly that the biggest shock was that if you do not do certain tasks, you absolutely cannot be whatever you want. If you do not take Biology 172, you cannot be a doctor; and if you decide halfway through your college career that you want to pursue medical school, the amount of time and effort that you would need to just catch up with the intense checklist of classes for the MCAT would probably kill you. Not to mention if you want to attend graduate school at all, the competitive nature of students today requires you to get an extremely high GPA, despite the fact that classes are gradually becoming more difficult and teachers praise themselves when they fail a whole class with an unreasonably unfair exam.

Not to mention, the stigma around being a humanities major is hard to avoid. My friends joke about me being homeless after college when my useless degree creates a jobless and unsuccessful life. Growing up in Los Angeles and attending a performing arts school warped my view on how people saw art, especially in a school that worships STEM. Where I came from everyone was going to be some sort of creative when they grew up: a performer, a dancer, an actor, a photographer, a playwright. And to be honest, I believed that. I saw my peers achieving great things while they were still seniors in high school and it made that dream seem much more realistic. With that in mind, that creative eight-year-old flew two thousand miles away from her home, destined to achieve these amazing feats, just to be told creativity is only allowed when it is flirting with practicality. Maybe I could have gone to a liberal arts school instead or somewhere more understanding of arts-oriented students, but how can one do that when the University of Michigan has so much to offer? An amazing reputation, a sense of pride that no other school could match, an incredibly talented and intelligent body of students that collaborate to increase the chance of success, a campus that looks like it was plucked from a catalog. I mean, it was a no-brainer. I knew any program I decided to go into would be academically rigorous and extremely insightful. Now, do not get me wrong, the humanities classes I have attended were exactly that, but the fear of not doing enough has become a very heavy weight on my shoulders. Everyone I meet is a future doctor, engineer, material scientist, epidemiologist, dentist, or nurse. Where were all the fairy princesses?

I decided that I needed to do more and went into what I like to call: “Phase I: I am going to be a doctor!” The idea of becoming a pediatrician was attractive; I always adored children, I wanted to find a career where I helped people, medicine and health continuously peaked my interest. So, with this in mind, I launched my pre-med phase and started to plan out the next three years of my life, the classes I would take, the medical schools I liked, what internships I would do over summer. (It’s sufficient to say I am an overthinker.) I registered for, you guessed it, Biology 172 and a statistics class, making my way through the advised pre-med checklist. Things were going pretty smoothly and then I failed two exams, started missing lectures, and had to explain to my father that for the first time in five years, my grades were not amazing. I came to the conclusion that the root of my stresses was Biology 172 and I withdrew from the class two- thirds through the semester.

No more doctor.

Right now, I am looking at pre-health or pre-social work, trying to find something realistic to pursue and the question “Where are all the fairy princesses?” haunts me. I like to ask people what they wanted to be when they were a kid and what they would want to be now, but often the answer makes me sad. My friend who just graduated with a degree in sociology told me he wanted to be a teacher when he was younger. Teachers, unfortunately, are not paid well and so many kids turn their cheek to education, unless it means becoming a professor at a high- paying university. My friend instead got his degree in sociology, but has no idea what he would ever do with it, so he is applying for reception jobs at local hospitals and clinics instead. Another friend told me he wanted to grow up to be a basketball player, but the skill required and the sheer realistic nature of the dream steered him in a different direction. If money or impracticality remained out of the picture, my dream would be performing on Broadway, or being a cast member on Saturday Night Live, or winning a Tony for Best Play, or singing my own songs in front of a giant crowd. However, the fear of failure or not having something to fall back on is honey for my anxiety.

Once again, I want to make it extremely well known that I understand how young I am. I am going to live a long, luxurious life and the worries I have now will all fit into place, and in my fifties I will be laughing with my husband and children about how silly my troubles actually were. But for now, they are real and they are daunting. It feels like everyone knows what they are doing or they are committed to suffering through the difficult classes they need to succeed. And frankly, I’m not. Every time I look in the mirror, I still see my younger self in the reflection - a purple fairy dress on, stuffed animal in hand, smile plastered to my face - and it is hard to not feel disappointed. I want to look back at that little girl and tell her that we did it. I want to tell her we became everything we dreamed of - a writer, a performer, a doctor, a veterinarian, a teacher, a psychologist, an artist, a chef. And although I cannot predict the future, I understand some of these options have been eliminated just by major choice.

To tell sixteen-year-olds that they need to have some basic understanding of what they want to do with their lives by the time they apply to college is utterly ridiculous. The way we have been taught to push ourselves to absurd heights has left no time to breathe in between class breaks. My fellow classmates are either not participating in any social scene so they can study, or they are engaging way too much and developing some form of alcoholism or drug problem before they hit twenty. Those of us who plan to go to graduate school have stopped learning in order to save space for short-term memorization, when in reality, we all went to college in hopes of learning more than we did in high school. No one seems to be super happy about what they are doing in college because despite the fact that adults have raved on about how in college you get to study exactly what you want to study, the opposite has proven itself true. I may be a speck of dust on Michigan’s campus but the alarming rate of students that feel the same way tells me that something is wrong with the whole process. During these next three years, I hope to catch a glimpse of my younger self by diving into activities and classes that excite me, but I worry that one day, she’ll fade away and I’ll just have to wait for my dad to tell me more stories about her.

“Thanks for the pizza,” Sam said before pushing himself up off the couch to go put his empty plate in the dishwasher.

“You’re very welcome.” You were already in the kitchen putting the leftover slices in a Ziploc bag so he could take them for his lunch tomorrow. (Side note: that had been something which had been a little difficult to get used to - giving the leftovers to him instead of keeping them for yourself. But, according to Sam, the school lunch was ‘horrific’ so...)

“Are you watching anything on TV tonight?” your nephew asked in the most casual of tones.

You knew exactly why he was asking: because he wanted to play his video game, and you couldn’t afford to buy a TV for his room at the moment. Until you could, the two of you had to share the one in the living room.

“No, I am not,” you smirked. “I’m going out again, actually.”

“Where are you going?”

“So, I ran into your teacher at the grocery store,” you told him, reaching for your purse on the kitchen counter and rifling inside for your lip gloss. “Mr. Kang. I ended up explaining things to him more, and he asked me for coffee so we could talk.”

You heard Sam choke all of a sudden, and your head snapped up to see he had been taking a sip of his Coke.

“Ew!” he coughed.

“What? Ew, what?”

“You’re going on a date with my teacher?!”

“No!” you cried immediately. “It’s not a date!”

The expression on Sam’s face was one which clearly said ‘You’re kidding, right?’

“He asked you out for coffee! That’s a date!”

You pursed your lips as you tossed the tube of gloss back into your purse. “We’re going to be talking about you, and trust me, I would not talk all about you on a date.”

“Gee, thanks,” Sam deadpanned.

“You’re welcome, sweetie.”

“Well, if he pays for your coffee, then it’s a date.”

“I’m sorry,” you scoff-chuckled. “Are you a dating expert, then?”

“Everyone knows the guy always pays on the first date!” Sam retorted with raised eyebrows. 

“It’s not a date,” you assured him for the last time as you headed over to the couch where he was setting up camp for the evening. “I won’t be out for long, but if I’m home after 10, you had better be in bed. You got it?”

Sam rolled his eyes, but he still murmured a ‘Yes, ma’am.’ And you still bent down and pressed a loud, wet kiss on his forehead.

“Twice in one day?” he grumbled, squirming away from you.

“I love you,” you told him with a chuckle before turning back around to grab your purse and keys. “Call me if you need anything or if someone breaks in and tries to kidnap you.”

You were already on your way to the front door, your back to him when you heard him actually say it. Like, he said the real words.

“I will. Love you, too.”

They were faint and his tone was pretty begrudging, but... The sound of them still made you pause, and your heart skipped a couple of beats.

Six months ago, you never would’ve guessed that hearing a twelve-year-old boy tell you he loves you, too would fill you with so much warmth.

But here we are.

It had actually been so long since you’d been to The Grind, one of the local coffee shops in town. You’d had to make the financial sacrifice of artisan coffee in favor of simply making your own for over a year now, and frankly, no one had even asked you out for coffee since then...

Kind of sad when you really think about it.

Mr. Kang was already there, sitting in one of the plush armchairs, but he stood as soon as he saw you come in through the door.

You grinned, though you had definitively decided not to bring up Sam’s idea that this was a date. That would make things sufficiently awkward, and you were already going to be talking about less than pleasant topics.

“Hey, Mr. Kang,” you said as you approached him.

He smirked at you and replied, “Please, call me Brian.”

You’d been out of school for ages now, but it still felt weird to call a teacher by his first name. Even though he hadn’t even been your teacher!

“Sorry,” you chuckled. “Force of habit, I guess.”

Brian simply smiled at you before turning and gesturing toward another part of the shop. “There are a couple of open chairs back there. If you want to go save them, I can get our drinks.”

Your first instinct was to refuse because - well, he was offering to buy your drink. And that made you think it was a date. But you knew it wasn’t. You’d just met him earlier today, and he’d only asked you for coffee because you’d started pouring your heart out to him at a grocery store. You accepting his offer would not solidify this as a date. Not in the least.

“Sure, okay,” you nodded. “I haven’t been here in a while, but I remember them having really good Chai lattes.”

“One Chai latte,” Brian nodded before he headed off to the counter to order.

You, in turn, headed back toward the two open chairs in the back corner of the shop. Brian had obviously suggested them because they allowed you a fair amount of privacy. It was a Thursday evening, so it wasn’t particularly crowded, anyway, but still. You would rather not concern the customers who were there when you inevitably started crying.

After settling down in one of the navy blue chairs, you set your purse down by your feet and began to survey the shop. It hadn’t changed as far as you could remember, at least not the layout and decor. The employees had probably changed, though the only one you could really remember was the handsome, slim manager.

Yet another handsome, slim guy caught your eye, though; he was walking around talking to the few customers occupying the shop and enjoying their drinks. Maybe he was the manager now? He had a sort of managerial aura about him, in any case. 

You thought he would meander over to you, but he stopped and sat down once he approached a girl around your age - or maybe a few years younger. Her smile lit up her face when he slid into the chair next to her, her eyes gazing at him adoringly.

You had no idea what their story was, of course, but you couldn’t stop yourself from speculating. They were obviously dating, maybe even in the beginning stages of a relationship? Or maybe they were just so in love that he still made her smile like that? Either way, you couldn’t help but be jealous.

It had been so long since you’d been in a relationship. You’d pretty much forgotten how it felt to smile at someone like she’d just smiled at him. How it felt to look at someone like she was looking at him.

And... lowkey... you did kind of wish this was a date.

Not that you were into Mr. Kang -- Brian!

I mean, yes, you thought he was good-looking. And, so far, he seemed like a high-quality person. But you had no expectations or fantasies that he was interested in dating you in any way. He was your nephew’s teacher! Didn’t that mean he was off limits?

And he probably had a girlfriend, anyway!

Before you could fall farther down this particular rabbit hole of thinking, Brian arrived with two mugs, setting one down carefully on the small table in front of you.

“Thank you,” you murmured with a soft smile, slipping your fingers through the handle and lifting it up to take a sip. The spicy warmth filled your chest, and you almost let out an audible sigh of contentment. It was just as good as you remembered.

Brian let out a soft groan as he sat down, and he took a sip of his own drink, his eyes meetings yours over the rim of his mug.

You cradled your own mug in your palms, drumming your fingers gently on the ceramic surface and biting the inside of your cheek nervously. 

Well.

Here goes.

“So, I guess it really all started a few months before the accident,” you began, trying your best to maintain eye contact. “My grandma was the one who raised me, and she got really sick. My brother was quite a bit older than me, so growing up, it was really just me and my grandma. When she got sick, I knew I needed to be the one to take care of her. It’s not like it was an obligation or anything; I wanted to do it, and my brother was busy with his own family. You know how much of a handful Sammy can be.”

Brian chuckled, tipping his head in a little nod.

“I was in school at the time - dental school. But...” You let out a very heavy sigh, already feeling the tears stinging your eyes. “Things got -- she wasn’t getting better, and I couldn’t deal with school and taking care of her. So I put school on pause for a bit. Or what I thought was a bit. I got a part-time job at a dentist’s office as the receptionist so I could help her out financially as much as I could but still have time to take care of her.”

You paused to take a sip of your drink, though the huge lump of emotion in your throat made it difficult to swallow. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Brian adjust in his seat, moving like he was getting something out of his pocket.

And when you looked back up, you saw he was holding out a tissue for you.

“Thank you,” you murmured, taking it and clutching it in your hand. “Anyway. She didn’t last much longer, but it was still in the middle of a semester, so I couldn’t just go back to classes right away, you know? I stayed at my job, and I had every intention of quitting and picking my classes back up once summer was over. And then...”

“The accident,” Brian whispered.

“The accident,” you choked out. “All of a sudden, I didn’t have a grandmother, I didn’t have a brother or a sister-in-law, and I had a twelve-year-old I had to take care of. If I go back to school, I don’t have any money because I’m not working. My brother left a small inheritance for him, of course, but they wanted it set aside for college. And I totally agree with that. But it does mean I have to have a job, and if I’m working, I can’t go back to school. I don’t have time, I can’t afford it. But this receptionist job pays less than half what I would make if I had finished my degree in dental school and could work as a dental hygienist. Right now... I’m just kind of stuck. I can’t really do anything to help myself, and I feel like I can’t even help Sammy. I can’t afford to send him to see someone he might talk to, someone to help him deal with everything.”

You had to stop and press the tissue to your eyes, lowering your head and holding yourself back from letting out a huge sob.

Brian reached out and laid his hand on your arm, squeezing it just like he had at the grocery store earlier.

“Oh, my god,” he murmured softly. “I am so, so sorry.”

“Nobody ever told me life could be this hard,” you said with a sad chuckle. 

“I know. And there’s not a lot you can do at the moment, huh?”

You shook your head, glad he understood that and didn’t tell you something like ‘things will get better’ or ‘everything will work out.’

“Well, I can’t help all that much,” he told you with a shrug, his brow furrowed deeply. “But we have a school counselor. I can email her and ask her to talk to Samuel.”

Oh, god! Why had you not thought of that?!

“Really?” you asked hopefully. “That’s not -- I mean, I don’t have to --”

Brian shook his head quickly. “No, of course not. It’s part of her job.”

A very big sigh of relief escaped your lips, and you threw Brian a watery smile. “Thank you. That would be such a big help.”

Things had been difficult before, but now that Sam was acting out and getting into trouble at school? You weren’t at all sure that you were equipped to handle that. You didn’t expect him to be a perfect angel, of course, but you were still trying to adjust to everything. trying to figure things out. At the moment, it felt like you were just barely holding your head above water. 

If you could just get Sammy’s life more sorted out, then that would help things tremendously.

Honestly, thank god you’d run into Brian at the grocery store. As lame as it sounds, it kind of seems like it was fate. He was going to help Sammy in a way you couldn’t, and you were already more grateful than he could ever know.

CAT to ER to ICU

After dragging my feet through the land of ZocDoc, I booked an appointment with a primary care physician since I did not really have one all these years. When ever I have had health insurance in the past, it has always felt sufficient to see my dentist and gynecologist regularly. I rarely get more than one cold per winter, maybe strep throat if I’m going through a traumatic breakup, but that’s it!

After getting approval for a CT scan through my primary doctor, I informed my office I would be getting a scan over my lunch break, but I should be done in time for our afternoon meeting.

The radiology clinic attended to me in a relatively timely matter. I received some sort of iodine drip to increase the contrast of the scan. They warned it may make give me feelings of needing to urinate or a metallic mouth flavor. My groin got sensationally warm.

CAT SCAN An unfamiliar sci-fi machine lay ahead of me with a Battlestar Galactica Cyclon-like eye beam, menacing red horizontal laser against a dark rectangle at the bottom of a large donut-shaped contraption. Mm, doughnuts. Its shape reminded me how I have been fasting for four hours. I mildly wondered if I would have time to pick up a sandwich before my meeting back at the office.

While the donut structure stayed static, the platform bed I laid upon slid back and forth. Gears inside the torus spun faster than a washing machine. It amazed me we could get imagery of any kind this way, and while I have wondered what it would be like to get a CT/CAT scan in the past, I did not expect to do so at this point in my life. It felt too early.

After getting the IV removed and dressed back in my normal clothes, I waited for my results. I expected the radiologist to sit down with me to explain the situation. The receptionist hands me a few papers, plus a CD that must contain my scan. Hah, CDs. I dimly think about how I have no CD drive at home.

After about fifteen to twenty minutes, a man enters the waiting room to confirm my identity. “Are you Amanda? You poor thing!” Oh, no.

This man had apparently already spoken with my PCP on the results of my scan, and I was to go to him straight away for further instructions. The radiologist continued on to say he has seen my doctor before as well for “a thing on his back” before reassuring me everything would be all right. He raised his hand for a high-five. I returned it.

PCP Visit Dr. Adams did not sit down with me to go over the CT scan as I had expected. Instead he had already spoken with the doctors at a nearby hospital and instructed me to head straight to the ER. I should take a cab. He handed me a square of paper.

All right. Definitely not making that mid-afternoon meeting. Probably no time for a sandwich either.

ER In the cab ride over, I called my parents to update them on my situation, but I kept it light-hearted. “Feel better, kiddo!” my mom consoled. I expected to go in for another test or two. I did not know I would spend the next two nights at the hospital. Upon entering the main entrance of the hospital, I feel my sense of control slowly start to crumble. The gravity of the situation suddenly feels immensely heavy. I had expended my last bit of self-control in convincing my parents that my present condition is not a big deal. In truth, I was no longer sure. I have never been to the ER, let alone received explicit instructions to go into one.  

Security guards lined what I expected to be a receptionist desk, but there is no office worker in sight. Tears start to well up in my eyes. All of the surrounding signs say unhelpful things like Green Pathway or Blue Pathway. None of this makes any sense. What’s going to happen to me? What am I doing? Where am I going? Is my eyeliner running?

One security guard reassured me, “Take your time, take your time. Where do you need to go?” He politely looked away while I struggled to fight back tears. After fumbling something about a thoracic surgeon, I remember that I need to go to the emergency room. Go outside and farther down to the right.

In a fog I enter the next unmarked door. A kind-faced man tells me it is about a fifteen-second walk more to the right. How did I get this bad at wayfinding? A wave of idiocy washes over me when I finally see the huge and clearly-defined letters that read, “E M E R G E N C Y – R  O O M” outside.

After checking in and traversing a few tunnels, all windows and natural light disappear. My vitals are taken in one room. I follow another medical professional through sterile hallways, lined with painted cinderblocks, fluorescent lights, and double-doors accessible only via an identification card. Dozens of hospital beds with grey faces and sullen looks line a central cluster of office desks. Behind each computer screen sat someone in a solid-colored scrub, completely unfazed by the organized chaos.

I am led to Bed #56. Is this corner of the room meant for me, or is someone else going to need this bed? I sat down like it’s a couch. Surely someone will come by to conduct another test or two, and then I can just go home. Maybe I can still make it to my gym class to fit in another workout.

A flurry of people stop by my bed, separated only by a curtain partition. What brings me to the hospital? How did my symptoms start? How long have I had this cough? Let me take those printed materials and CD from you.

Two thoracic professionals show me the results of the CAT/CT scan. Based on previous Google searches, I had expected a 3D-model but instead they’re aerial snapshots, slice by slice. Look at the dark spot in the center. That is my trachea. Like a reverse full moon, as we see pictures that approach the center, it turns almost into a sliver before waxing back into a full circle.

Over the course of the evening I learn that I most likely have lymphoma. There is a kind that tends to afflict younger women in the mediastinum or the space between the lungs. This rather large unknown mass most likely has been pressing on my superior vena cava (SVC), which would explain the neck and facial swelling, as well as my trachea, which would explain the coughing.

I don’t have allergies or cold or cough or sinus infection or bronchitis. I just have a tumor. See, guys? I was never contagious.

ICU Because I am essentially not bleeding to death, I will be moved to the ICU in a couple hours. They have deemed my condition unsafe to sleep at home, and I must be monitored at all times. I may have to stay at the hospital “several days” or at least through the weekend.

It is only Thursday night. I take out my phone to cancel my gym class.

The ICU ends up being on the fifteenth floor, and I receive a room all to myself. I don’t think I have been inside a hospital since I visited my paternal grandmother at one back in the Nineties. I did not think I would be at one regarding my own health for another decade or two. It is already a comforting change to see a window to the outside world, despite my occasional disdain for the sun.

I am scheduled to receive corticosteroid injections every six hours. Hello, friends, As I have discussed and described my experimentation and results I have got due to my exploration and experiments in quest of healthy and happy living in my previous post How to live a healthy and disease free life – I. The concluding part of the post is here to make you more aware and informed about your own health, body, and mind.  Our Life is a journey to explore, experiment, experience, learn and correct our mistakes As I have mentioned in my previous post and analysis I have done about my health status, through various health checkups in the last three years. We can always learn from our mistakes and of others and grow better always.  I have spent About INR 70,000.00 just to ensure what is going inside my body, and what is the health status of all my internal organs and health-related different measures and parameters concerned to them.  I don’t have any health problem from then to now, or before in the last 37 years. (Excluding a few events mentioned in this real and interesting story ahead). But through my diagnostic reports and checkups, I have discovered many shocking facts about my own body and nutrients level and some other factors.   

You must know the status of your health, get health checkups of your body You cannot know about your inner body status and the condition of your internal vital organs from outside. Your lives major health issues depend on these status and specific conditions. And you can learn it only by taking regular health checkups, there is no other way to know it. I was always so conscious and alert about my health (excluding few events and activities I have done in my life due to my ignorance and unawareness towards their impact on my body and mind in long run) and did every possible thing to keep me alive, healthy and fit. Everyone makes mistakes so I have made a lot earlier as well and I have paid for it well, but awaken early and changed my attitudes and habits timely, so I am safe and sound now. Consciousness is the key to live healthy and happy always You can overcome from any of your habits and wrongs you have done to yourself under any influence, associations if you are conscious and aware of it. You can change anything in your life, If you take care of it timely, sincerely and very honestly. It takes a lot of time and patience to recover, and sometimes it has left some signs and impact of it on your body and mind, which stays longer with you, don’t worry just carry on ahead and do not do it again.   It is a very strange phenomenon that you may be conscious and unconscious both at once, regarding many things about yourselves and people, facts and truths in your life and environment. You can see it through this example – people are so much affectionate and caring about their own pets, i.e. dogs, cats, birds but at the same time they are killing and eating other animals, like pork, cow, goats, sheep, cocks, turkey,  buffaloes and all kind of others and sea animals. This is the proof and truth about all of us, you are aware and conscious of some things and a lot unaware and unconscious about a lot of things at the same time.

It’s strange that you are kind and human to someone and some things and unkind and utterly inhumane to many others at the same time due to your unconsciousness and blindness towards other things and matters.   The difference between a miserable person and a blissful wise man is the degree of awareness and level of consciousness they have. It makes someone Buddha and someone the ugliest beast on this earth, what would you like to be, the choice is always yours. Our pattern of conscious living and thinking is the cause of all the blissful and healthy state of our body and mind and its absence creates pain and suffering in our life. The purpose of life is to become more sincere, aware and conscious about yourselves and everything connected to you in your life and environment.  The Events in My life I have Taken Health treatments in the last 37 years In last 37 years of my life, I never visited doctors or taken any medicines for any sickness, excluding a few incidents, they are as -  7 years ago I had an operation for my appendicitis removal, it was sudden, and unexpectedly happened. Another event was, I went to an eye specialist due to my eyesight degeneration, it has been caused by due to my age and more to my extensive exposure to computer screens for very long hours, I have been working with computers for last 23 years at least 8 hours a day. Last was, I went to a dentist to remove one of my rotten teeth at the same year, it was happened due to my habit of chewing betel leaves (people of India know what it is) from childhood and smoking for last many years.

Unhealthy habits and routines cause all kind of diseases and harms to your body mind  These are the only events in my life when I went to get any treatment or medicines for my health problems. All these events happened in my life due to some of my unhealthy habits and unconscious lifestyle in that period of my life. Other minor cough and colds I have managed through my kitchens spices and herbs. My early graying of hairs was caused by my habit of smoking for long years and eating nutrient deficient foods. It has happened due to that I have been living for more than the last 20 years alone and away from my home. It caused me this problem, you are not getting sufficiently nutritional food outside as you are eating when you are at home and cooked by your mothers, sisters, and wives. It was the reason I have some nutrient deficiencies in my test reports taken in the last 3 years. You are getting wholesome food at your homes, the traditional natural food prepared at your home is best for your health. Here, I am talking about homes where healthy and nutritional cooking and eating is the priority in serving dishes to all the family members and the guests. What you have to keep in mind before eating or buying junk? We all have habits of eating outside, at the restaurants, fast food junctions, from street side spicy food vendors. One thing you must remember that the food you eat outside is highly processed, not fresh most of the time and not hygienic and nutritious. Most of the times it is highly toxic and without any nutritional value, due to high processing and heating and frying many times, it turns them dead and nutritionless as pure junk. You must search, inquire by yourselves on Google or check food packets before buying anything you eat or serving it to your family and friends. You must check before to eat drink and consume any food products and other food ingredients purchased from the market or online. You must not consume them without knowing about their good and bad effects on your health, body, and mind, why you would buy diseases and health problems by paying for unhealthy and junk foods. If you are doing it knowingly and willingly, then you need serious psychic and medical treatment.  You must not consume them at any cost if they are unhealthy and containing or made from material and ingredients, which made them toxic and harmful for your consumption. You must not be the slaves of your taste buds, it will lead you towards very serious health problems and deadly incurable diseases.

Your ignorance and negligence cost you a lot in the long run It is unfortunate and sad that people of the world know everything about all the harmful packaged, branded and processed foods, drinks available in the market. They are consuming it blindly, unconsciously and paying thousands of bucks on health treatments, drugs, and hospitals after getting sick from their consumption. I feel very strange by seeing how idiot and blind people are? They are purchasing diseases and all kind of physical and mental problems by eating an enormous amount of junk and making themselves slave of their taste buds and suffer a lot in an unimaginable way.

Food Manufacturers and Vendors Selling it for their Profits, not for your health The hotel, Restaurants and food vendors not caring about your health and nutrition level of the foods they are selling. Their ultimate motive is to sell as much they can and how can they make you visit more and more to consume the rubbish they are selling in the name of the delicious food, to make more profits. It is true in the case of 95% of them, especially with so-called big brands. They are glamorizing their foods with attractive commercials and to make people addict to consume more their highly toxic and processed food, drinks. They are using utterly harmful chemicals and ingredients which seduce you and make you slave of their products. Foods sold by International Food Chains and Junk Food Parlors is highly toxic and dangerous for health.  The internet is filled with the medical experts report on all the multinational brands and products they sell, the process, the ingredients they are using to make these so-called famous foods. They are exposed, their conspiracy of making people addicted to their products. They are selling the worst things to the ignorant blind people who are slaves of their taste buds and ignoring the truth about these companies, sick and criminal agenda.  These foods and drinks are responsible for so many horrible and most critical physical and mental disorders to the kids, youngsters, and people of all age group. They are playing with innocent people lives to make more profits. They are using chemical, colors, pesticides, preservatives and other additives to make it more attractive, tasty and to increase their shelf life. And people are so idiot and blind, they are going these food chains and consuming most harmful things sold in fancy names.   All your Junk foods, cold drinks, (Pizza, Burger, Hot dogs, fries, shakes, pies, cakes etc. most of the packaged and processed foods, juices, carbonated beverages, and so-called healthy drinks) are highly toxic and have nothing good in them from the nutritional and health point of view.

What you need to Do in this regard and what I am doing? You must prefer to eat organic, natural, unprocessed healthy and nutritional foods, as nuts, dry fruits, and fruits, sprouts, unpacked fresh juices, and homemade dishes prepared by you, or your mothers, sisters, and wives. Eat fermented foods like Dosa-Idli, Dhokla, and healthy foods like Upma, oatmeal. And it is normal for your ladies at homes, they cook very healthy and tasty traditional food at home, with taste and health. Now I have learned a lot and making my meals full of nutrients and nourishing. I have taken care as much I can of myself, I avoided eating outside, as much I can, I never liked eating deep fried foods, snacks, and any kind of junk and stupid unhealthy cold drinks(Cola, Pepsi and other popular among stupid youngsters and all age people). I have eaten veg pizza 2 times, veg burger 3 times, and cold drinks a few more times in the last 37 years. I always preferred to eat at home, even when I went to any party, I went there after eating food at home. Ha ha ha ha, my mother always feels very strange and laughed louder due to my habits and activities.  I am cooking for myself for the last 7 years. And try to get all nutrients and essential elements I can include in my daily diet, I am vegan for the last 4 years and vegetarian throughout my life. I am not consuming white sugar for last 4 years, replaced it with organic jaggery(Gud), I was eating it only with my green teas, organic coffee, I do not eat sweets of any kind excluding jaggery and organic honey with my hot drinks. I have not eaten anything outside in the last three and a half years and even before I ate rarely outside., I always preferred to eat at home and good food. I drink only RO/purified water, I increased the intake of green vegetables, fruits, and nuts in my daily diet. For the last 42 months, my daily food costs me around 15000-20000/PM, I will tell you in detail in my other post. It is always better to spend on good food and healthy habits than hospital bills, expensive medicines, and health treatments. I never want to live on medicines and visit hospitals. Do good to yourself. 

How can you prevent you from these threats? Diseases and sickness not formed in one day in your body and mind, they took a long course as per immunity and strength and resistance your body and mind have against all the diseases. But their symptoms and indications may be visible and you get hints from time to time from your body and organs. If you are aware and conscious of these signals and symptoms appearing and surfacing on your body and mind. You can do something to prevent and cure and save yourselves from deadly diseases and potential physical, mental financial damages or loss of life in a very unfortunate way. From the last 3 and half years, I have changed my total eating, living habits, associations and job I was doing. I eat only certified organic foods (grains, oils, nuts, spices) as much as possible as per availability in my city, or I am buying them online. Fruits and vegetables are not available organic in my city, but I prefer to buy them from local farmers who do not use much chemicals and pesticides to produce them. Do exercises, eat only as you need to live healthy and energetic. Eat only nutritious and healthy food, fresh and light. 

How do you know about your Healthy or Disease status? First, this is to take routine health checkups half-yearly, monthly, annually as per your health status and requirement. I have taken health check-up of 70000 INR in the last 3 years from India’s top Pathology and health diagnostics lab, like Thyrocare, Dr. Lal Pathlabs, and Metropolis, look what is available near you. You can book tests online; most of the good Diagnostic Labs have their collections centers and franchise in all 2 and 3 tier cities also. We are made of what we are eating all the time, from cradle to grave. Our food constructs and constitutes all our emotions, thoughts, activities and intentions. So it is the most important thing in our life that what we are eating all the time. Our wisest ancestors, Sages and Enlightened masters taught us to eat better and pure to live and attain a higher level of consciousness and blissful experience of higher planes of our existence. There is one oldest saying in this regard “JAISA KHAVE ANNA, WAISA HOVE MAN” (It includes everything you consume in form of food, thoughts, and information) it means, WHAT YOU FED TO YOURSELF, CREATES YOUR REALITY. They have segmented it into the three categories as SATVIK, RAJASIK, and TAMASIK, and highly insisted that the quality and quantity of food create your reality and level of experiences you can have in your life. Whatever you eat and consume in the form of food, thought and information creates your reality. Your body and mind, are the output of what you fed to yourselves all the time. So be aware and conscious about it, if you consume junk and rubbish, you will be that as a result of it. All your junk comes in the category of TAMASIK, it creates, addiction, lethargy, laziness, obesity, and sickness.

I prefer to eat 75% SATVIK and 25% RAJASIK foods to keep me alert, wise, active and free from the impact of TAMASIK foods,  mindsets and activities. Hello Thank you for entering in my post I've been with Admiral insurance for more than 1 year, which is my 1st car insurance since I've been in England I've been driving for more than 12 years and I've never made a claim before it was a normal and clear day and i was going to work when I had an accident with a girl riding a moped It was a very silly accident, fortunatelly none was injured, and I only had a broken wind-mirrow, which is no more than 50 of damage I had to call Admiral, my insurer, to sort the problem out, I had no other choice Admiral told me I was not covered to go to work since on the policy agreement says: use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. And, according to them, to be covered, my policy had to be: use for social and COMMUNITY. So Community for them means, going to work, it is ridiculas but that's what i was told However they said we cover you, you will have to pay 23.74 extra and you will be covered, it was frustrating, a theft, but I let it go... The absurd story didn't even start yet! I gave Admiral all the details which the police had given to me the day of the accident plus some pictures of the scene, which I took before to leave that day Admiral sent an inspector who interwied me at my house. This inspector wrote a statement of 6 PAGES! about my accident, however, I need to say, he did a very good job On the statement states that none was injured and the fault lies with the moped rider, which is also what the police said on the scene. In addtion this inspector suggested to call my insurer again to finally get my car fixed. Admiral told me I will have to pay for the damage myself and, after all their investigation, if they find out it was not my fault, I can ask e refund for the damage, and they added that this investigation can take up to 3 years, so I will have my money back in 3 years! this is because according to them, the moper rider was injured This is absolutely incredible What would you suggest? I would like to get rid of this Admiral policy as soon possible, I would like to claim against it Who could I call to claim against Admiral? I have tried to research the requirements for insurance by law on the California DMV website and the most concrete statement I found was some numbers that cover various damages and injuries (DMV website is not working properly so I cannot look it up). I am 16 years old and from the UK. I will be turning 17 in november and getting a driving licence. I was offered a car from my step dad. It is a 1996 Honda Civic Coupe LSi in green/blue. It has a 1.5 litre engine, and although not very powerful, it is very desireble to steal. It might be important to mention here that it has an automatic transmission. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement. Know that I'm here to work for you, try to work with me I'm thinking my head total bull crap. 1, she works for her insurance company first, and will have their interest first, 2, she works for their client and to protect them from me in a suit. My car was being driven by my husband,an excluded driver on my insurance, and was hit by a driver running through a red light. The driver has no insurance and no license so I doubt I will recover anything from her but my insurance company won't pay anything as well. Will my GAP coverage still pay the difference between the totaled value and the cost of my lien?""

Car accident and cost $500 to repaint the bumper ?

I crashed a car in a paking lot. It was a dent on a left rear bumper. I didnt want to report to my insurance because i got in an car accident few months ago( i was 17 and juz turned 18). The owner took his car to mechanism and sent me a receive of her car repair. It costed $500 to repaint a left bumper ( Acura 2 doors). My dad told me that $500 can painting the whole car and told me to as the owner if I can pay only $300. I dont want my insurance goes up but also dont want they charge me that much. I wonder if they really cost $500 to repaint the bumper because the owner sent me a payment for her car and anyway that i can ask hhim to lower the cost. I took a picture of the dent after I crash it andn dont know if it can help for anything ??

My car insurance company rang me two weeks ago asking to update my details. I was previously registered as a student and unemployed but changed this to working part time as an admin assistant. A week ago I received my new certificate of insurance but today they rang me to say that my premium had increased by 150! I find this difficult to understand how changing my profession from student to admin could whack up my premium by this much. At the same time they offered me a new deal from another insurer , which they claimed would be cheaper, but I refused over the telephone as I felt too confused at the time. Now they told me that they will be sending me the bill to pay off the new increased premium. Can anyone help me confirm whether insurance companies can do this? Things I did when I was 27

With my 28th birthday looming over the horizon (tomorrow to be exact), I've been lamenting the loss of my early and mid 20's, and facing the fact that I will definitively have reached my late 20's. Having come to end of a job contract 3 months into being 27, and not having found work since, I realised  this had shaped the way I have viewed this age, and perhaps defined it too much. Life is obviously a lot more than your job or career, and with that in mind I have decided to make a list to remind myself of the things that I did at 27.

Trained a Team- So ok, this one is job related, but hear me out, the list has to feature a true representation of the year. With a few months to go on my job contract, I was asked if I would travel to Bristol and train a team so that they would be able to do my job. Now some people I imagine would see this as a kick in the teeth, especially if they had been with  a company a long time, but I hadn't, and  I also saw it as an interesting challenge. I got to go somewhere different, meet some new people, and have a crack at teaching people. It turns out I wasn't actually too bad! I also had a rare chance to get to know one of my colleagues a bit better whilst we lived in a hotel for a little bit. Plus my boss said I was an invaluable part of the process, and lets face it, it's always nice to feel needed sometimes.

Signed with more recruitment agencies that I can remember the name of- Those first few weeks of job hunting are the most fervent. Your CV is updated, the job applications are flowing and you find yourself double checking the year you did your GCSES and then gasping in disbelief, as you fill out forms that some sadist decided to make in word so that one sentence could lead to half an hour of re-formatting. Never fear though, because then come the phone calls from the recruiters and you find yourself in a stuffy, sparse office having your passport given more attention than it has at the airport the last few years. Just got to try not to mix everyone up when they call as they seem to have a habit of having exactly the same Christian names..

Finally got a phone contract- Now this isn't a particularly exciting one, but I think it represents a move towards adulthood. People have previously mocked me for my pay as you go status. In the past I had refused to commit to a man in a shiny suit asking me to sign a very long looking form filled with terms and conditions I don't wish to peruse in my own time. I guess times are changing.

Completed taking part in a clinical study- This is kind of a cool one. For anyone who is interested, the study is called MooDFOOD and involves 9 European countries. The study is exploring the link between food and depression. I was initially interested because I wanted to go in a BODPOD like I had seen on TV, but then I learnt a bit more about the study, and I was keen to take part and do my bit for science. The BODPOD does make a cool whooshing sound like a spaceship though..

Got back into swimming- Finding myself with a bit more time, I felt this year was high time to get back into a hobby that I used to do a lot more when I was younger. I was a lifeguard when I was 16, and I used to teach children to swim as well. I began heading back to the pool a couple of times a week and I find the exercise not only physically, but mentally rewarding. Just have to be prepared for a bit of afternoon lane battles!

Became an exercise DVD queen- This is quite similar to the above, but it takes a different kind of will power not to throw your trainer at Davina or swear at the impeccably dressed, sweat less, Californian babe gracing your television screen. Sure, exercise DVDs can be irritating in part, but they are a convenient building block for getting back into fitness when you can't afford the gym, and they are also a good way of measuring your progress given they are the same every time.

Made some new friends/acquaintances- Sometimes when you cast your mind back over a year it can be easy to focus on large events like a holiday or a big surprise of some sort. One of the nice surprises is realising you've met and got to know some new people. Although I am no stranger to a touch of social anxiety, I love the unexpected nature of an evening where you meet someone new and get to know a bit about them, and sometimes gain a new perspective on things.

Went to Barcelona- I always think if you managed to get some travel in, you can't declare a year a failed year. This is going to sound truly pathetic (and give away the fact I was a true 00's teen) but I have wanted to go to Barcelona for over a decade, ever since it featured on an S Club 7 TV series. Let me tell you reader, I was not disappointed! Incidentally, don't panic, there wasn't a 00's pop band in sight. The architecture, the culture, the art, and the food were all mesmerising. I may have almost cried over how beautiful the Sagrada Familia was inside, with the light shining through the stain glassed windows. What can I say, we all have our weaknesses, apparently mine is excellent light..

Caught up with my philosophy friends- As you get older, its easy to find yourself losing touch with people. People change jobs, move house, and have kids around this age. I am pleased that I have stayed in touch with people from my undergrad course, and it's always lovely to see them, although sometimes it can be tricky to get everyone's diaries to align. Also some of them are an ocean away and that can make meetings a little rarer. It was great to see the philosophy crew a couple of times this year, and in particular I had a fun night seeing some free comedy at the Angel Comedy Club.

Caught up with my uni house mate friends- As above, with it nearing 10 years since we met and started living together, I am grateful we all still find the time to see each other several times a year. If it wasn't for one very meticulous organiser (that certainly isn't me!) it would probably happen a little less, so I am glad she kicks us into action. We are a little older, but we can still pull some embarrassing moves on the dance floor, attempt to be super civilised at a restaurant, or even as was the case this year, end up invited to some random ladies house at 2am and befriend all her pets!

Brought in the new year on a roof in central London- Why is the roof important I hear you ask? Or lets say you did for the sake of this. The roof isn't especially important, (although it was fun to be able to see the fireworks) but the older part of me that is obviously ready to turn 28, found itself thinking “Well, this is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to stand on a roof in central London that isn't a bar”. What was important was I got to spend NYE with my best friend and some pretty rad people he knows.

Walked a lot- Over 821 miles since Christmas day to be exact. I have got a fitbit, and have become one of those boring people addicted to the numbers. But factoring in that I got the fitbit in December, and my birthday was in August, that's got to be over 1,000 miles this year right?

Found a museum that has got to rival The Pencil Museum in the dull yet interesting stakes- I enjoy travelling, and visiting museums, but I have a silly game I play, I like to find what has the potential to be the most ridiculous or dull sounding museum and see what it's really like. This has led me in to such places as Cork's Butter Museum, ( the man at the desk was so surprised that we wanted to go in that he let us pay the student price even when we advised him we weren't)  and The Pencil Museum in the Lake District. This year’s find though has to be the Salcombe Maritime museum, dusty and dour but with a few hidden gems. What can I say, I guess I'm kind of nerdy.

Faced the dentist- This again, sounds a little bit strange, but hear me out. I have anxiety, and one of the ways it manifests is that I find going to the dentist extremely stressful and scary. So much so that I had avoided it for over 4 years.  I finally faced my fears and went, and it wasn't as bad as I thought in the end.  I did had to have a little bit of work done, but it wasn't the end of the world, and I've been sufficiently scared into flossing by the hygienist. Also my dentist has a very charming Irish accent, which seems to help quite a bit.

Won several pub quizzes- Ok, so maybe not several, but we have won at least 3 times in the last year, maybe 4. I have been part of a weekly pub quiz team for a couple of years now, and sometimes when we get it together we are pretty good. The fact you win a crate of beer at one of these pubs seems to motivate certain members of the team. I love a pub quiz, even if we do appallingly, it's fun.

Read some good books- I always think a new year is a new chance to read more books. I haven't perhaps read as much since I left my job as I did when I was working, (got to do something during the commute) but I have read some thought provoking ones. The one that stands out for me recently is “The Handmaid's Tale,” which despite being written in the 80's seems very relevant today.

Caught up with school friends as if no time had passed- This can be a wonderful sensation, it really depends on if you wanted things and time to have passed. The festive season made for some short and sweet meetings. Looking back it has also reminded me there are people I have known from school that I wish I had taken the opportunity to spend more time with this year, here's hoping we get it together this year.

Given money to charity- I have always given money to collection tins, and  homeless people etc, as one tends to do, but this year I started donating regularly to Wateraid, UNICEF and Macmillan nurses via text. I think its actually a really handy way of getting people to donate, as often when faced with someone signing people up to a charity on the street, we shy away from the paper work. I suppose is a little bit selfish, but people expect to be able to do things at the click of a button. This is something I want to continue to do, as I think it's really important to give what you can to help others.

Find something to do I haven't done before- With less than 12 hours before I turn 28, I have an urgent desire to do something I haven't done before. Here lies the end of my list, in which I have no doubt forgotten several things I've done this year, but that's ultimately a good thing, as it means I have managed to think of plenty of things I have done, when I previously couldn't think of a single thing. Does anyone have any genius ideas about what  new thing I should hastily do?
