I’ll never forget when I was arguing with a person in favor of total prison abolition and I asked them “what about violent offenders?” And they said “Well, in a world where prisons have been abolished, we’ll have leveled the playing field and everyone will have their basic needs met, and crime won’t be as much of an issue.” And then I was like “okay. But…no. Because rich people also rape and murder, so it isn’t just a poor person thing. So what will we do about that?” And I don’t think they answered me after that. I’m ashamed to say I continued to think that the problem was that I simply didn’t understand prison abolitionists enough and that their point was right in front of me, and it would click once I finally let myself understand it. It took me a long time to realize that if something is going to make sense, it needs to make sense. If you want to turn theory into Praxis (I’m using that word right don’t correct me I’ll vomit) everyone needs to be on board, which mean it all needs to click and it needs to click fast and fucking clear. You need to turn a complex idea into something both digestible and flexible enough to be expanded upon. Every time I ask a prison abolitionist what they actually intend to do about violent crime, I get directed to a summer reading list and a BreadTuber. It’s like a sleight-of-hand trick. Where’s the answer to my question. There it is. No wait, there it is. It’s under this cup. No it isn’t. “There’s theory that can explain this better than I can.” As if most theory isn’t just a collection of essays meant to be absorbed and discussed by academics, not the average skeptic. “Read this book.” And the book won’t even answer the question. The book tells you to go ask someone else. “Oh, watch this so-and-so, she totally explains it better than me.” Why can’t you explain it at all? Why did you even bring it up if you were going to point me to someone else to give me the basics that you should probably already know? Maybe I’m just one of those crazy people who thinks that some people need to be kept away from the public for everyone’s good. Maybe that just makes me insane. Maybe not believing that pervasive systemic misogyny could be solved with a UBI and a prayer circle makes me a bad guy. But it’s not like women’s safety is a priority anyway. It’s not like there is an objective claim to be made that re-releasing violent offenders or simply not locking them up is deadly.

i scroll through my tl and see the pirate show discourse posts and it’s like standing on the sidewalk and hearing someone arguing on the phone through an open window as they drive past. I had to leave an obligatory “what da hell?” after I saw the abuse apology thing (over a show? calling someone that over a show??) just to tell you that I am watching it all like a tennis match.
the discourse is a tennis match and brother i’m the ball

Christ, everyone has so many ideas about this. Some of them are bad. A lot of them are bad, actually. No, feminism isn’t gone because of white women, no it’s not because women of color “started getting involved” in feminism and white women didn’t like that, and it it’s NOT because of transphobia (inherently), it’s because most of the “feminism” you people identify with is lip-service! It’s because the oppression of women has become the most normalized kind of oppression someone can experience, even in leftist circles, and any opposition to that idea is met with violent accusations of TERFism. It’s because you all have carved out an archetype of an acceptable type of woman to hate, when you shouldn’t be hating women! It’s because “feminism” as we know it has been commodified and sold back to us as a label, or something you can slap on your ig bio instead of an actual practice. We HAVE a feminist movement, and it’s MEANT to be radical, but a lot of you people simply DON’T like that. It’s meant to take some actual thought, and some discernment, and some gall! It’s because you people don’t listen, EVEN to the feminists you don’t like! It’s because you cling on to things that make you feel happy instead of wrestling with anything that makes you feel uncomfortable! It’s destabilizing to see someone ask where feminism has “gone”, and if people have stopped caring, and the people who DO care asking the same thing, for a different reason. It’s here! They are still here! You can have feminism that does real work if you stop using other people’s bad behavior as an excuse.
can we just have, like, any feminist movement whatsoever. did everyone just stop caring?

The Goth Kaiju
The Heisei Godzilla vs Mothra is, for the most part, just an inferior remake of the Showa version. However, I love Battra as an addition and genuinely he's one of my favorite Toho Kaiju.
They gave Mothra a little hot topic brother who's all edgy and black and an ecoterrorist and then lets them reconcile over how they can at least agree that Godzilla is just such a massive asshole.
That's just plain funny.

Title card
22/05/2025
My initial plan was to title this animation as 'Madduma' since the center of attention in this animation is on the homeowner Madduma. However, in the overall story I have created, the main character of this narrative is in fact the Lodger (Gini Yaka). So, there's a big of an issue as to which character gets the spotlight since the overall narrative focuses on the origins of both these characters.
So, after some careful thinking, I settled with giving this animation the title of 'The hunt'. When you mention a title like this, the audience will focus on both the hunter and the prey.
The prey/ Homeowner -
In this context, we can see that the prey is the little Madduma who stands fearfully in front of one of the king's well-known hunters the 'Gini Yaka'. We see that despite the Gini Yaka's powerful and eerie presence, Madduma bravery faces this encounter and uses the 'Copper Lion Amulet' gifted to him by his father as a protection charm against the devil clan/Yaksha Gothra.
The predator/ Lodger -
Here we observe that the Gini Yaka is a hunter whose movements seem eerie and strange. He also hunts his prey with patience and careful tracking of them movements.
Although it appears in the animation that the Gini Yaka has swung his sword at little Madduma, the ending is left with the cliffhanger for the audience to decide whether the Copper Amulet did in fact save Madduma or didn't
Also another interesting thing I noticed with my lighting is that most of it is on the lodger instead of the homeowner. Specially in the character side view shot.
Tumblr media
I feel like it is relevant to note down because it highlights the difference in each character's presence. The Gini Yaka, who has the upper hand in the hunt has more light casted on him. Madduma's body on the other hand is half lit and half shadowed, showing that he could either live or die at the mercy of the Gini Yaka.

Official Story for the animation
03/02/2025
Alright everyone! Finally....the moment we've all been waiting for. The official story for this animation. I will have the story divided into several parts.
1. The Gini Yaka's backstory -
The Gini Yaka was born to an indigenous Sri Lankan clan called the 'Yaksha Gothra'/ 'Spirit clan'/ 'Titan clan'. They are people who were born with a titan physique and powers.
They lived in the forests, far away from the common folk under the Lankan king's ruling. They had their own unique traditions and culture of which they couldn't stray away from due to their connection with the spirits in the forest. One such tradition would be performance rituals to chase away demonic entities.
Many of the common folk believed their existence was only a myth. However, many generations of Lankan royals have always known of their existence and have idealized them as descendants of the Gods; that their lives should be at peace, or the Gods would inflict punishment.
In 1798 a new king was appointed to rule Lanka. He was known as King Rajasinghe. During the beginning of his kingship, he was a great and influential king; loved by his chief officers, soldiers and his loyal subjects. However, the pressures of maintaining power and the gruesome battles against foreign invaders completely altered this king's mentality and personality. He turned into a dictator; a cruel, cunning, and self-centered king who would be willing to sacrifice his soldiers in pointless battles for his materialistic gains. Anyone who would dare to defy him would suffer merciless punishments.
After sending off many soldiers to battle, he realized that his men weren't strong and powerful enough. He needed stronger men in the frontline. With this desire, he remembered the teachings on the hidden 'Titan clan'. Many kings and queens were educated about the livelihood of the titans in the forest. There were few books on historic records of the titans. Out of his immense curiosity and desire, the king ordered his officers to search for the books and gather knowledge.
Once the king learned about the whereabouts of these titans, and their weakness for 'copper', the king strategically planned and captured the titans, completely disregarding the sacred lifestyle of the titans for his personal gain. The king sent his army with copper armor and weaponry and successfully weakened and captured the titans.
(Like how Superman is weakened by Kryptonite, the titan clan in this story were weakened by the copper metal. The reason why I've chosen copper as their weakness is because it is historically proven that copper had been used to create Sri Lankan weaponry.)
https://www.archaeology.lk/protohistoric-copper-metallurgy-in-sri-lanka-an-overview-arjuna-thantilage/
The Gini Yaka was at the age of 13 when the King's army captured him and his family and forced them to train for the king's army.
With the increase in the strength and soldiers in his army, the king felt the luxury of having separate forces;
The army - They were soldiers who were sent to battle against foreign invaders. These included both human and Titan soldiers.
The hunters - The hunters were soldiers who were sent to hunt down the king's traitors. Based on the king's orders, they would either imprison the traitors or publicly execute them. This force consisted of Titan soldiers due to their incredible physical strength and hunting skills.
At the age of 18, the Gini Yaka was assigned to the 'Hunters' force as he accelerated in physical, mental strength and hunting skills beyond most of his clan members.
In 1802, the king learned that some of his officers had formed a secretly alliance, plotting against him. In order to satisfy his revenge, he sends his hunters to track down the members of the secret alliance. However, since the members had predicted the king's discovery, they went into hiding, far away from the kingdom. Furious, the king sends the hunters on a mission to capture these officers' family members in order to lure the officials from hiding.
In the animation, the viewers will see the Gini Yaka arrive at one of the secret alliance officer's houses to capture his family members.
2. The homeowners' backstory -
The homeowners in this story consist of the following family members:
The Adhikaram (chief officer) -
He is the father of this family. Although he won't be shown in the animation, it is important to note down his character since he is one of the officers who was part of the secret alliance to overthrow the king.
Unlike his reference historical figure (Ehelepola Nilame), his reasoning to be part of the secret alliance to take down the king was valid. The reason behind the origins of the alliance was to take down the cruel king who would inflict brutal punishments upon the people who wouldn't comply to his rules and dictatorship. These officials wanted to save and protect the people. Their ultimate goal was to kill the king and rule the kingdom together by distributing power equally among each official.
However, once their discover that the plans of their alliance were no secret to the king, they went away in hiding, far away from their families, and far away from the kingdom. During this time of hiding, the adhikaram wrote a letter to his wife, asking her to take the children and run away to a secret location he had arranged for them.
In the animation, the viewers will see his wife reading through the letter that he sent to her during his period of absence/hiding.
Kumarahami -
She is the mother of 'Madduma' and 'Tikiri' in the story and the wife of the Adhikaram. She will be portrayed as a neutral and somewhat ignorant parental figure.
The animation will start off with her picking up her husband's letter from the table and taking her time to read through it.
Even when she hears Madduma running outside, she dismisses it to focus on the letter.
Madduma -
He is the main child in the story. He will be portrayed as an energetic and joyful child.
This character comes into play when he hears footsteps from outside and rushes outside in hopes that it's his father returning back home.
Unfortunately, his assumption was wrong. He instead encounters the 'Gini Yaka' right outside the door.
Tikiri -
Based on the research I've done on Maddduma Bandara, it is mentioned that he had two sisters and one of them was named Tikiri. Therefore, I decided to add in a younger sister to this story.
I not too sure about this, but for the animation it's not required to have 4 characters animated. But the MI5014, we need to model a minimum of 4 characters. Therefore, I've added in a daughter as well to the story. She would be Madduma's younger sister.
If I were to include her in the animation, she would most likely be right beside her mother while she is reading the letter.
3. The story/events I'm hoping to show in the animation -
The animation would start off with a nighttime visual of the Ehelepola household with burners inside for lighting. Kumarahami enters the frame as she walks near by a table and picks up her letter.
The viewers would get a close up visual of the letter written in Sinhala. This is a letter written to her by her husband who has been absent for the past couple of days.
While the viewers get a wide shot of her reading the letter, Madduma enters the frame with playful energy.
Then we get a shot of someone's footsteps from outside, walking towards the house. This shot would make the viewers feel suspense as the feet look different compared to human feet.
Once Madduma hears these footsteps, he immediately rushes outside with glee, hoping it's his father returning home. The viewers still see the visual of Kumarahami reading the letter. She looks up at Madduma running off, but dismisses it to focus on the letter.
Once Madduma steps outside, we see a high angle shot of him look up and a large shadow appears in front of him. The viewers see how quickly his facial expressions change from joyful to fearful.
The animation will end with a low angle shot of the menacing 'Gini Yaka' looking down at the boy.
