"so many things using the term ai feels like deliberate obfuscation" i hate to tell u this but we have been using the term ai for video game npcs and scientific models and automated tools and generative tools for many decades.
like if this was a more recent acronym yeah it'd feel deliberate but all of those things are, in fact, forms of artificial intelligence
and sure they're trying to buzzword it bc of the genai craze but that shouldn't take away from the fact that we've been using that acronym for decades

kafka in a castle
so i got selected to present a piece of coursework on The Metamorphosis in a literal castle but in a boring seminar room inside the castle and some of you lot are obsessed with the guy so i thought i might share some of what the piece was about.
so the coursework was for a module with a focus on international and translated works that can be deemed 'world literature'. but simultaneously, in another module we were looking at what it is to be the author through critical approaches from Barthes and Saussure. so i though, why not combine the two. what does it mean for the authorship of a work read in translation.
now i didn't really like metamorphosis first time around. it fell a bit flat for me. sure i could see the symbolism but it didn't shake my world. i should relate to Gregor, being confined to my room with chronic illnesses, but i just didn't. it just wasn't enjoyable. but it was the easiest text for what i wanted to do, so that was that.
but in rereading it i enjoyed it so much more. certain quotes seemed to leap off the page to me, and this was perfect for the form i wanted. my uni is great for encouraging 'creative-critical' responses instead of essays. so half can be your own creative writing, or hell a cake, and then you justify it like you would a normal critical analysis in a typical essay. so, i made a tumblr blog. i don't want to share it because i don't want to be plagiarised (on principal, even though it's not that good) but i used a pretty basic html skin and just responded to quotes from metamorphosis in the tags completely out of their order from the text. same as how so many people do to texts, even if they haven't read them before.
so, in line with 'death of the author' (in the actual one not the internet one) i proposed that every reader's every reading of a text is a translation. reading in the original german? translation. read it before and rereading it 80 years later? translation. rereading a quote you read 5 seconds ago? translation. we are too effected by what came before and other sensory input for the meaning to remain the same each time. the tumblr blog just presented this more literally. they are responding to the quotes out of order, and their meaning is changed because they're out of order.
but i don't agree with Barthes entirely. because as i've seen on tumblr, even as my lecturer brought up. Kafka is a pretty interesting guy. the fact he writes about the suffocation of Gregor's mother before any kind of knowledge of WWII is kind of scary, Gregor's death feeling unnervingly similar to Kafka's own death by consumption seems foreboding. or as i put it - 'the image of the unknowingly prophetic author is undoubtedly compelling'. and you can't just discount all that because it influences the reader. by nature when we're reading we're so curious about the person behind it. especially when it's by someone like Kafka that has become aestheticised and mythologised.
a guy says texts have ‘preceding and surrounding texts of which it may not even be consciously aware’. but it's true for people too. they are both objects of indefinite origin and saying what Kafka meant is the true meaning is frankly ridiculous. i don't even agree with what i meant 5 minutes ago sometimes. we can't separate our minds from our bodies and ourselves from ourselves.
so when Gregor changes from man to vermin is his mind changed because he is a vermin? or is it only that his experiences are changed by his new body translating the world. there's a subtle difference there, and it's important, even though i'm not quite sure why.
but my essay ends with some advocacy for us folk on tumblr. that 'dark academia' style reading isn't ever a bad thing (even if sometimes it can annoy me greatly). 'The embodied, biased, and unsystematic exploration of a text is not a failure of the reader or an inferior interpretation, it is only a reflection of the same truth or ‘unity’ of a text in the light of a different life.'

for my school’s senior prank this year they’ve put up a massive white tarp with the words “THANKS CHAT GPT - CLASS OF 2025” spray painted on in front of the school, and probably done other things but I’m not at the school yet. stay tuned

I have an account on an AI chat bot site that I only go onto to create the worst chat bots that I will suddenly get inspiration for and right now I'm convinced I need to log in to create chat bots for all the Disney characters I can think of.
I think it'd be okay cause my birthday is in 3 days and I share it with Walt Disney himself so I should automatically be able to do this without consequences

I hate fireworks so much oh my god.
They scare pets, trigger people with PTSD (hell, they're basically just a huge "Fuck you!" to anyone with sensory issues, to), harm the environment, and are a general nuisance.

What to have for dinner:
Spin a wheel with different food choices on it. Put the ingredients you have in your house into a reverse recipe maker (like Supercook (not sponsored I just use them occasionally)). Look up local restaurants, see what sounds good on their menus, and make it yourself.
Summarizing notes:
Talk to your teacher or professor for review sessions. Talk to past students. Bring back fucking SparkNotes. TAKE YOUR OWN NOTES, then rewrite them by hand!! (Which is literally proven to help people remember things better bc you have to write it out)
Search engine:
Here's a list from AARP (yeah, the old people thing, cause y'all are acting like boomers more and more every day with this shit) explaining different ways to utilize search engines better. People claiming they don't work anymore - they do. I use them every day. And if you're not getting results from Google, try a different search engine (or, hot tip - put a cuss word in your search. "where to buy fucking laundry detergent." Gets rid of the AI and a LOT of the ad shit that clutters the front pages of Google these days)
Math:
Famous words have never been more accurate: there's a Reddit for that.
There are solutions beyond chatgpt. Y'all have just stopped trying to find them because it's not convenient. You're making yourselves dumber. Stop it.

[ID. Both images are Tumblr messages between @ ollguest and @ airplanned.
ollguest: Hi AirplanNed, We're enforcing our codes of conduct, an issue we just posted about. Following your post, we posted the following note: "We recognize that AI is a controversial issue in creative and other spaces. We know that some bad actors have exploited or marginalized writers through their use of AI. The fact that bad actors/uses of AI exist does not erase its legitimate uses (e.g., spellcheck is an AI; it's been around since 2003) or the right of writers to see how others may be using it. Along those lines, please adhere to our codes of conduct in your responses, even if AI isn't you cup of tea."
ollguest: We really, truly don't care if people disagree with anything we post. It's more of a tone/civility thing
airplanned: How many followers have you lost in the last hour?
ollguest: Our NaNoWriMo Codes of Conduct on our website specify that we enforce our community codes of conduct on all our social spaces.
ollguest: E.g., we enforce the codes of conduct that we put forth on our website identically on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr...wherever we have a presence.
airplanned: This is not your space. This is my space
End ID.]
watching @nanowrimo within a single hour:
make an awful, ill-conceived, sponsored post about "responsible"/"ethical" uses of ai in writing
immediately get ratio'd in a way i've never seen on tumblr with a small swarm of chastising-to-negative replies and no reblogs
start deleting replies
reply to their own post being like 'agree to disagree!!!' while saying that ai can TOTALLY be ethical because spellcheck exists!! (???) while in NO WAY responding to the criticisms of ai for its environmental impact OR the building of databases on material without author consent, ie, stolen material, OR the money laundering rampant in the industry
when called out on deleting replies, literally messaged me people who called them out to say "We don't have a problem with folks disagreeing with AI. It's the tone of the discourse." So. overtly stated tone policing.
get even MORE replies saying this is a Bad Look, and some reblogs now that people's replies are being deleted
DISABLE REBLOGS when people aren't saying what nano would prefer they say
im juust in literal awe of this fucking mess.
