Jeremy "Jes" Goodwin provided the cover for AD&D module UK4: When a Star Falls by Graeme Morris (TSR, 1984), depicting Shalfey the Elder Sage of the Tower of the Heavens, his scheming pupil Piyarz, and the derro of Therno Pass with the mysterious black sphere that toppled their idol.

Jes Goodwin contributed much of the art to TSR-UK's series of modules, but oldhammer fans know him as the designer and sculptor of many early Citadel Miniatures lines, including elves, Eldar, and the similar Eternal Champion figures, early space marines, terminators, chaos for Rogue Trader and fantasy, and the skaven which he created along with much of their lore.

424. Graeme Morris - CM6: Where Chaos Reigns (1985)

A module for the Companion Rules of D&D, this one comes from the UK and is a pretty original entry in the CM group of adventures. Aimed at high level characters, it's also one of the first adventures where characters go hopping through space and time, giving it quite a bit of variety.

The world in which our characters start is experiencing a bunch of weird events, there is a clear disruption in the normal workings of physics and they have to explore several times and places in order to fix the chaotic state of things, they go to a primitive land, to a magical place, to a classical greece type are and ultimately they will have to go to a distant planet, this also being one of the few modules that mixes Fantasy and Science Fiction, to find the source of the disturbances.

As a module it's quite a well produced publication, better than most previous UK modules, with some really good interior illustrations by Jez Goodwin, the illustrations of the several destinations that characters get to go to are pretty cool as are the maps made for each different area with different styles to represent the time and place they are set in. All in all a pretty cool module.

I'm going to answer this for Cold as Ice as I have much of the betrothal guidelines figured out for that.

What does courtship or dating look like in your world?

Courtship plays an important part in Cold as Ice. Most of the marriages were arranged and could be considered diplomatic, as the kings and emperors of the Arathean Continent typically formed alliances by marrying sons and daughters.

The rules of courtship were inspired by the renaissance and regency era.

Are there any special rituals that must be followed?

Young unmarried women were never alone in the company of a gentleman with the exception of family and close family friends or at any social event without a chaperone. This was why gossip swirled around the Crown Prince and the Stewardess after her husband passed on. The gossip grows as they spend more time together as her station in government required her to do with the Crown Prince. Some say that Cyras murdered her husband to be with the Crown Prince and that his betroth is next.

All forms of touching were kept to a minimum. He is allowed to help her enter a carriage or mount a horse. A gentleman is allowed to take a lady's arm through his, to support her while out walking. This is scene when Cyras and Vaene tour the Olessan slums.

Conversations must be extremely discreet, leaving much to interpretation.

Most of the marriages in the Olessan Empire were often arranged and focused on strengthening a family's political strength. This was the case when the young Cyras Covelli was betrothed to the aging Steward by her foster father.

If they were not arranged, most couples met at the feasts that are held in the Alabaster Citadel, parties hosted by Emperor Graeme of the Olessan Empire. They could also meet at a dinner party, soiree, musical, the opera, or theater.

If the man wished to get better acquainted with the lady, he could send her flowers the next day and later pay a visit upon the family during the hours where her chaperone, mother, or aunt would be present. He would take her for a stroll around her family's gardens with a chaperone at hand.

Vaene would take Cyras horseback riding. After a traumatic moment, Cyras and Vaene would share several intimate moments away from prying eyes.

At the Emperor's winter feasts, there is always dancing. This is called "A Season". If she refused to dance with anyone man but him, the woman would announce to the world that they were engaged.

If he spent a lot of time with her to the point where people noticed how much time they spent together, the rest of the nobility and society would think they were engaged. If he failed to make an offer of marriage, people would question if she were unsuitable or if he were. The couple's reputation would suffer. Their only option would be to marry or live with tainted relationships. Depending on his station, his reputation would most likely recover; hers would not.

Are there any rules about who may court?

The main criteria for selecting a spouse were uniform across the classes. Apart from the usual requisite such as health and which deity the family worshipped, the most important was family, respectability, and the ability to provide. Marriage was a matter of consolidating and furthering status and wealth. One of the factors taken into account was the conduct of the parents, siblings, and the rest of the extended family. Avoiding any scandal was a must in the Olessan Empire.

How do people typically propose?

Marriage was a business opportunity in the Olessan Empire. Arranging a suitable match involved family, friends, associates, and political allies.

Negotiations between two families were sometimes sealed until the bride reached a marriable age and a suitable dowry amassed. Later in life, Emperor Vaene would start a public fund supported by an annual tax to provide dowries for orphan women.

Announcement of the betrothal was dinner at the bride's home before a procession through Summas Hall and The Olessan Forum. The wealthier bride would usually ride alongside her intended on a white horse, signaling her chastity.

If it were not an arrange marriage, Once the man was secure that the woman returned his affections, he would make an appointment with the girl's father and formally ask for her hand in marriage.

His income would be scrutinized, and they would draw up a prenuptial agreement which included her dress allowance, jointure, other ways he could provide for her, as well as what dowry would go to the man.

When it was all settled, the father would break the news to the girl and wedding preparations would commence.

What does a typical wedding look like?

Marriages often took place during the end of the Season and after the Festival of Fire before various families returned to their homes in the Olessan region that they are from.

The wedding ceremony was simple. Most weddings took place during the morning. Any day of the week was acceptable.

Most people would walk to the temple. Flowers and herbs would be scattered on the route to and at the temple entrance.

The father of the bridge would present her to the groom. Vows would be read from the hymn of Amés and a wedding ring would be exchanged. The rings could either be ornate or plain. Married men wore their wedding rings more often than not, engraved with a few words of love (or their initials if an arranged marriage) and the date of the union.

Where do they take place?

The weddings take place in Temples that are devoted to the gods that the families worship. These buildings are usually covered in ivory and roses.

How do people dress?

When it comes to a wedding dress color, white is rare. The most common color was beige or brown. Most brides would wear the finest dress that they could afford. For the nobility, their gown would feature a decorative stomacher, petticoat, and two wide box pleats falling from the shoulders to the floor.

The bride would wear a lace veil covering her face. She would wear cream-colored stockings secured with a ribbon and

The groom wore white linen shirts with a white silk cravat. A black tailed jacket with buttons left open to show a waistcoat. The waistcoat was brightly colored and richly embroidered. He would wear skintight dark breeches. Black stockings and pump shoes would complete the ensemble.

We’re here. The start of the new season is less than 24 hours away and it’s felt like an eternity but also in some ways, like no time at all since that last ball was kicked at Pittodrie and the players took their lap of the stadium, some for the final time, and basked in what had been achieved over the last few months. Even the stoic Barry Robson was seen showing some emotion before he headed down the tunnel. These were great scenes to cap off what had, somehow, been a great season. We won’t talk about the Celtic game, it didn’t matter so let’s just say that it doesn’t count.

Much like the season itself, the summer break has been a bit of a rollercoaster with its ups and downs. It can be quite easy for clubs to open themselves up to criticism during a transfer window - sign a bulk of players early in the window and risk being accused of carelessly making up the numbers and bloating the squad instead of looking for quality but tread quietly in the market and more than likely fans will become restless and quite vocally wonder why there’s no news of additions. The dons have somehow managed to find a strange middle-ground but not necessarily to their detriment. The early confirmations that Angus MacDonald, Graeme Shinnie and what I consider to be an incredible signing, Leighton Clarkson would all be returning set the bench mark high and perhaps a little hard to follow. Nicky Devlin had already been confirmed to be coming North, with most agreeing this was a sturdy enough acquisition, the loan deal of Rhys Williams added some youthful promise to the backline and the relatively unknown Ester Sokler showed early in pre-season that he could be capable of what we’re all hoping for. Then it all went quiet. Aside from a back up goalkeeper in the shape of Ross Doohan, there were a few weeks of relatively little transfer action for the Aberdeen support and coupled with murmurings that Rhys Williams and Angus MacDonald had sustained injuries, an anxiety began to grow that we may be leaving ourselves short in numbers ahead of the start of the league campaign. We’ve not seen a great deal of of the defensive reinforcements which have come in over the past 10 days or so, but it shows the good favour that the AFC recruitment team have curried in the previous windows that the arrivals of Or Dadia and Slobodan Rubezic have been met with enthusiasm, with most of us unfamiliar with both players but optimistic at what they can do in Barry Robson’s new look side.

The drama hadn’t ended though and only a few hours ago as I write this, the news many of us had been dreading was confirmed with ‘sweet prince’ and ‘brate’ Ylber Ramadani departing for Lecce. There were few amongst the dons support who were unconvinced by the badge pounding and hard tackling Albanian and he will be sorely missed but it must be considered great business by the club. It leaves us with an intriguing narrative, whilst I personally don’t think either of these players fit the mould of a Ramadani in terms of defensive attributes, there are two young central midfielders who look to be staking a claim to place in the midfield three, in the shape of Dante Polvara and Connor Barron. After a successful loan spell back in the states and a rousing RedTV interview, freshly mulletted Dante seems to be eager to prove himself in the dons midfield and it seems like he may have Barry’s backing given the minutes he has received in pre-season. There was much talk of Connor Barron’s wavering commitment to the dons amongst rumours of deals with other clubs and perhaps an issue with attitude, but given his social media posts and the fact he has not moved on, he also looks ready to take back a position in midfield this season and given the number of games we’re looking at, there will no doubt be room for both of them to prove what they can do and give Barry Robson selection headaches.

There are possibly more redemption arcs to be had with Shayden Morris looking as if he will have a part to play, Jack Mackenzie having a big role in pre season, Vincente Besuijen claiming he’s back with his focus fully on Aberdeen and of course Anthony Stewart still in the squad, there is much intrigue in how the squad could evolve over the season.

Away from the personnel side of things, it seems to just be sheer excitement from the Red Army. Record season ticket sales, record kit sales, a 4000 strong away support for the first game of the season, fans scrapping for every priority point available in anticipation of trips in Europe and a proverbial lapping up of the new transparency coming from the club, spearheaded by Alan Burrows, there is enough excitement to go around. Let’s just hope when that first ball is kicked at 3pm tomorrow we see what we’ve all been getting excited about!

287. Graham Morris - UK3: The Gauntlet (1984)

The direct continuation of UK2: The Sentinel, this is a Greyhawk module that makes little sense on its own, even though there, as usual, instructions for giving it a quick start to get the players up to speed with what is going on. Basically doing a kind of quick version of UK2, by making the characters find the sentinel, the good-aligned sentient glove that hates the evil-aligned Gauntlet.

So, starting off you will in any event have the Sentinel with you and have as your mission the destruction of its nemesis the Gauntlet. TheGauntlet has a lot of similarities with the One Ring, and it's hard not to see parallels. In this case it has been picked up by an Ogrillon that is now under the Gauntlet's influence and doing its bidding, mainly trying to find a more powerful host for the glove than the strong but dull Ogrillon. The characters are guided by the Sentinel to the town of Adlerweg, which is being besieged by Fire Giants and where most of the action is going to take place. 

As a module it looks pretty cool, but really only half a thing, with UK2 pretty much a prerequisite for this adventure, the art by Pete Young is pretty grotesque, but in a way which I quite enjoy, with a real old-school feel to it and a griminess that is characteristic of UK products in a way which was absent from the more polished US productions of this time.
